Gary Cherone cannonballing down the stairs of the Sydney Entertainment Centre in the middle of Ain't Talkin' About Love might be the coolest thing I've ever seen a frontman do at a concert. Totally immersed in the moment and the power of music, what a legend!
This tour is how van halen sounded in the early days. The band's tone is incredible. I appreciate Gary, He sang all the songs that Sam I am would not. This is good vh damn year to the day is eddiesbest guitar work
Well, yeah, it was 1998. Most people hadn't even heard of a mobile phone, and even if someone happened to own one, they would have had no reason to bring it to a concert because in 1998, they were literally just phones.
It is a really really shame that they didn't keep Gary! This thing worked very well and next album could have been a killer... Now watching this at 2020 and wish people would have given more respect to Gary here.
I actually thought Gary never really got a chance. That album wasn't the best, but live I thought they brought it. I didn't see any of the live shows with Gary, but have friends who did, more than one, they all said that he did a great job. The boys were tight and on fire.
Damn i hate to be a "new van halen fan". I really liked all the eras, my favorite is with Roth, but c'mon guys give Gary some credit he was not bad at all, i agree that VH3 was not such a great album but he did his best :D. I never saw that 1998 tour before, its amazing how Gary runs into the crowd ands sings.
I don't know if that stair incident was on purpose, but if it wasn't then DAMN he played it off well. "Damn, I just fell down the stairs...who gives a shit, I'm going to keep singing!"
aems24 Back in the day Gary was very unpredictable.. He would do just about anything to get a crowds reaction. I saw this tour and he did something similar, and I remember him climbing up on top of the monitors on the side of the stage, and jumping off of them and upon landing did a somersault I'm sure so he didn't break an ankle or something, but he was just all over the place. He was that way with Extreme too. Great showman..
@@ryant3600 And sadly, that unpredictable side of Gary freaked the hell out of Eddie at the time. Album sales didn't help but his stage antics didn't help the cause neither, when Warner asked the brothers to sack him.
@@TheMadness5150 it wasn't his live energy, matter of fact all members liked his energy. And they wanted to keep him. WB was putting pressure on them, but Eddie was wanting Gary to stay, Gary bowed out on his own.
Seem, to be too many at the front glued to their seats come on folks this is a real rock concert ,best version of this song I have seen live still kicks ass.
I was at this concert & as a big van Halen fan & Roth fan that this stage , this guy was AMAZING!!!! He can sing , entertain , did I mention sing , got the vibe & did I mention he can sing live!!! They should have kept this guy And I was a big Roth fan till I see him now , poor guy that's sad way to age. Eddie you bet on the wrong horse , by the way I think Sammy can sing live much better than dave Even though I love the early stuff better
I actually think of Dave, Sammy and Gary, this was the ONE song Gary song better than either of them live. Obviously, nothing can top the original studio version as one of Dave's signature performance, but live he constantly fucked up the lyrics and sang completely agains the melody, ruining the groove. Sammy sang the song competently, but his voice is too high and too clean to really encompass the proper amount of grit and attitude needed to make the lyrics really spark. Gary sang it straight and it was in a key that fitted his voice just right, and on top of that he delivered the song like Dave in the studio. It helped that Eddie's playing was terrific, too.
Dave has never done a carbon copy of the recording during live performances, and I’m glad for that. He does what he feels in the moment and that’s truly performing. That’s getting lost in the sauce. He and the music are one. There’s too many businessmen on stage nowadays
I don't know why people bitch about Gary so much, the guy is a fantastic singer and a great fit for Van Halen. The guy brings out the best of both worlds (Roth and Hagar songs) and the guy even kicks ass on his own Van Halen work. I think the problem is that people can't get over Roth or Hagar leaving and Van Halen 3 didn't go platinum like the other Van Halen albums did. The album not going platinum was on Van Halen, not Cherone. Cherone wanted to tour and see how that went before making the album. I think that would've been a better outcome and Van Halen probably could've produced a better album. I think Van Halen made a mistake by letting Gary go too quick, the guy made one album and they were like see ya, good bye. I think Gary could've redeemed himself if they worked with him a little more, they barely gave the guy a chance.
Hard Rock Master You're making fun of the way Gary dressed, yet Roth was the biggest fruit of them all. Roth wore ass less chaps, doesn't get any worse than that. I think Gary dressed fine. Alex Van Halen is wearing a neck brace for whatever odd reason, maybe be hurt his neck, who knows, and Eddie looks trailer trash with that wife beater tank top on. So I think Gary's persona is fine
Letters From Andromeda I think that ALL of the VH singers have dressed poorly... Dave the least, Sammy next, with Gary the worst, imo, of course, as some people probably loved the way Gary appeared on stage. Just no charisma for me...
Hard Rock Master Gary in my opinion dressed normal to me. He didn't have the brightly colored clothes or anything like that. Dave kind of started all that bright colors and tight clothes. Hagar did the bright colors and parachute pants. Gary looks normal. That's probably why people don't like him, he just wasn't a colorful singer. People have different eyes, ears, and opinions on the way they look at things, I respect that.
+Shaggy Tatum I think Gary sounds better than David Lee Roth maybe not when Roth was in his prime like 1978-1988 after that forget it Roth has gone downhill as a singer and Sammy is good but in certain songs he does not sound right but Gary is on the money with all the songs and he moves better on stage than Roth and Hagar.
Say what you want about any of the lead singers, but Gary CRUSHES this, and I'm old enough to remember VH from the beginning. Also, it seems we judge the singers based on how much we liked Eddie's playing on particular albums. Ever heard VH3? Nothing on there will remind you of the guitar licks on the first Van Halen album, and that's NOT the fault of Gary.
If only VH 3 had been mixed and mastered differently it would have been a different story...They also should at least have done a second album with Gary. Even what they could have done with Mitch Malloy excites my imagination. If only Eddie had gone off his addictions earlier...we'll never know that's for sure...
Gay or not. That's a hell of a performance from Gary. Great interaction with the audience. That's how is done. It's a shame that I'm in a minority with my opinion...and Eddie is killing it, as usual. The best f#%!& guitar player.
I always loved Ed's tone on this tour. Idk if he's using a half-cocked wah pedal or some kind of mid boost pot in that early Wolfgang but it sounds so nasty.
While I don’t like the album they did with Gary, I wish they would’ve done more concerts/tours with him. His live performances are great because he’s a very talented vocalist when he’s not being forced to do a Sammy Hagar impression. Also, running around in the crowd and doing a barrel roll down the stairs while singing is fucking unhinged and I love it.

Major Fucking Kudos to Gary Cherone. He killed all those songs. EDDIE was fucking on. Tone was perfect
gary was fabulous in concert.... the only VH show i've been to where NOTHING was off limits...
This version is totally wild. My favorite version.
Gary Cherone cannonballing down the stairs of the Sydney Entertainment Centre in the middle of Ain't Talkin' About Love might be the coolest thing I've ever seen a frontman do at a concert. Totally immersed in the moment and the power of music, what a legend!
Gotta say, that was pretty crazy, but it turned out pretty cool....respect to Gary!
Poor guy got a bad rap but he is killing it too many people judged him before they heard him
This tour is how van halen sounded in the early days. The band's tone is incredible. I appreciate Gary, He sang all the songs that Sam I am would not. This is good vh damn year to the day is eddiesbest guitar work
If I saw this version of Van Halen, I honestly would not be disappointed. This was the best they ever sounded live with any singer.
This was actually the version that introduced me to Van Halen with Lethal Weapon 4 advertising back in 1998
@@joselopez6990 Fire!!! :)) It's in the movie as well.
Youre drunk!
Ain’t talkin about love and Runnin with the Devil are two of my VH favs.
Fuck, Eddie's tone is Razor sharp!!! Fantastic Tone!
I was at that gig.. amazing! And yes not a mobile phone in sight
Well, yeah, it was 1998. Most people hadn't even heard of a mobile phone, and even if someone happened to own one, they would have had no reason to bring it to a concert because in 1998, they were literally just phones.
1:40 - Ed’s dive bomb shook all of Australia! I think the only other live version that beats this one is the Fresno 78 bootleg.
2:14 onward. COOLEST fekking part of this entire show. Cherone actually got my arm hairs up at this point
RIP Eddie VanHalen
Not sure if that was on purpose but rolling down those stairs was a ballsy move. Either way, he came out of it looking cool. Respect earned.
WT hell was that? hahaha, boss move!
He sounds like David Lee Roth man I bought vh 3 couldn't get into it but this is kick butt ty for the great times God bless us all 💕🙏
Great performance. I saw them in Melbourne in 1998 and Cherone rocked.
Im with you man....just a great performance. Gary is great live.
It is a really really shame that they didn't keep Gary! This thing worked very well and next album could have been a killer... Now watching this at 2020 and wish people would have given more respect to Gary here.
I’m guessing lots of Diamond Dave fans were ballistic
Damn the ending straight gave me chills. I’m 32 and wish there was music made like this nowadays
This was much, much better than I expected. Will need to check out some more.
Why am I just now seeing this video?
AMAZING PERFORMANCE!!!!
The best live concert sound .
They all kick ass 🤟🤟
R.I.P E.V.H

I was there ,,it was awesome...rip Eddie.
That is true rock n'roll, performance, sound and song show!
Damn i hate to be a "new van halen fan".

I was at this concert! I'll never forget it! The best that they ever sounded!
This sounded fantastic! But 1980 Van Halen Invasion tour was also incredible.
Best live performance of this me thinks
ein Meisterwerk für die Ewigkeit!!! R.I.P. eddie !🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟
Terrific Live Version of the Classic, Ain't Talkin' Bout Love....Cheers from Damo.
The days when people actually got into rock concerts. Rather than standing lifeless with a smartphone in hand.
That was so weird. The singer sucks.
Bro I can assure you, they ain’t lifeless, I’ve almost lost homies in mosh pits
You mean the days when most people in the crowd were so drunk they did not even know what song was being played boomer. LOL
I‘m 15 years old and can agree with you
❤
Badass version can't complain with Michael's singing
That opening lick by Gary…goosebumps every time…they nailed this version
Great live version!!! Thank you for sharing
R.I.P. Eddie
This is killer. Gary Cherone wasnt treated well by the jerky critics, but this incarnation is slamming!
this video kicks fuckin' ass, amazing performance from Mikey, Gary, and The VAN HALEN BOYS!!!!!!!
That sounded better than any live version I've ever heard out of ol' diamond dave.
Brutal . . . 100% spot on, but brutal nonetheless. And I love DLR. Cherrone never got enough love.
A big ole "WHOOPS!" at 2:28
that solo fkn melts dayum
That was phenomenal 😮
Great sound 👍👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏🙏

Again, Cherone pulls it off ... well done! VH sounding good, here!
Right now, we have the same issues we did when this song came out
I was at this concert & as a big van Halen fan & Roth fan that this stage , this guy was AMAZING!!!!

As much as I don't like what EVH did to his bandmates, that dude is one of the best live players ever. Video after video proves that.

Huge yes even today he rocks this live
Does the singer goose step at 3:22?
Gary did a great job.
The guy singing SUX!!!!
Van Halen's calisthenics.
Wow.

Gary dressed like he had just come from being a motivational speaker at a flipping houses seminar... I'm so unimpressed with his persona...

Gary's dark punky energy is perfect for this song. Not sure it fits, say, Panama, but it's perfect for this cynical little ditty.

Goddam eddie can play that guitar this is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥❤

has anyone ever heard micheal anthony on bass?
Van halen 1978-1984 Rip
Gary was a great frontman!! Wow. The band sound great!!
What happened to the drummers neck back then years ago he is in a few videos with a neck brace on
