Nice Video! I like the new GX, but love building my 2010 GX460 for the time being though. Maybe someday I will want an upgrade - like the added articulation and stock 33s best. Why is it called the 550? It is not a 5.5L engine or has 550hp. So where did the 550 come from?
The LX is 600 🤷♂️
Ask the Mercedes also 😅
Great info here- I learned more detail here than from 10+ car reviewers on the GX550 combined
Thank you 🙏 ❤
I learned more about this great Lexus GX550 than watching almost 10 other reviews combined. I (was) a bit on the fence about spending the $$ on this but now I'm all in.. (Lexus should sponsor you). Since Lexus is finally giving this line the option of a more focused OEM overlanding capability, these functional engineering differences matter! Thanks for these details!!
Wow thank you for the kind words 🙏 ❤️. Please keep us posted when you get your new GX550 😊
yes his technical review is quite impressive
Great break down of the GX. Love my lx470 but this one is calling me.
Thanks for explaining the frame change and how it affects rust...I've been searching for this answer for years. No other site could answer this.
Great video. Explains some of the key engineering differences. Important to understand when one buys a vehicle for the long term and not lease.
Thanks very much for the technical info.iv learn't enough to love the GX550 even more!.
Excellent explanation! Appreciate these videos.
Can't wait to see these on the road and how people fix them up...
The new GX is a game changer. What a fantastic off-roader and an incredible vehicle overall
Frame weight is the least of my worries. Frame rust is my concern. I have a 1980s ford F250 with 30 years on salty roads in New England. I also had a Toyota Tacoma where the frame was replaced before it was 6 years old…
Catching up on all your videos and can’t find anything on what you think of the ground clearance. Excellent videos 👏 👏 👏
Thanks so much for posting this and the very detailed information - as others posted below, I learned more from this video than all the other reviewers combined - great work. As for all these improvements, its really a wait and see for me - would be very hard to top the smoothness of the current GX powertrain and the overall rigidity of the vehicle. Everything just feels so well put together, and the current KDSS system works flawlessly as there are no computers involved. Great to hear about the weight savings, but then its hard to understand why the gas mileage has not improved much at all - a twin turbo V6 with a 10 speed trans has essentially the same efficiency as an old V8 with a 6 speed? I know about the extra HPs, but this is not a performance vehicle in any case. Also, you don't mention some of the other changes - physical climate controls have been eliminated for the most part, the swing out rear door (which allowed for the spare to be rear mounted and an extended gas tank to be installed in its place underneath the vehicle) has been eliminated, the tuck-away rear windshield wiper has been eliminated, etc. Toyota/Lexus has generated a lot of excitement from folks who have never driven the current GX for an extended period but, for folks who have, it will be very interesting to see how they feel about the truck when its finally available to test drive. Finally, let's see how much all this new tech costs - my guess is that the Overtrail+ will not be cheap.....
Excellent points Henry... Thank-you formyour continued support and feedback. Technically regular KDSS is electronic and has its own ECU... this is basically and on/off logic switch at 15mph or whenever conditions are met to turn KDSS on/off. E-KDSS expands on this but details are limited... we will keep researching and update the channel asap. ❤️✌️
Maaaaaannnn awesome video and explanation, thank you!👌🏽👍🏽👏🏽💯
Thank-you for your nice words and support ❤️ 🙏 👏
Great video! Just discovered your channel!
thank you for subscribing 😃 ❤️
For me, that was not only the best video of the new Lexus but one of the best videos about modern 4x4's.
I am really not interested in Apple car play, 1200 electic motors to move a seat or how easy it is to put your shopping in the back.
The graphics in this video are how my brain works. I want to see exactly what is going on.
I loved the info about the anti sway bars release mechanism. In my mind I imagined some electric motors to release it. Toyota engineers are way better than that, the hydraulic links are pure genius.
110mm of extra movement at the front is extraordinary. It's not like the previous model was bad, so to find that much extra is pure Toyota genius.
I assume all these improvements come from the Land Cruiser 300 model. Whilst I love the look of the 200 I just don't like the 300 visually.
The Lexus however, is just very pleasing to the eye. Odd for me to say because I am not normally a fan of Lexus styling. The original LS400 aside which was beautiful.
Thank you for producing a video for people who actual know what 4x4's are meant to do.
Thank you for kind words and for your support 🙏 ❤️
Love this new GX. Great content 💯
thank you for subscribing 😃
Thanks for this great review 👍 👏 🙌
Thank you 🙏 for your support and for subscribing ❤️
Great video brother! This is the type of content the offroad community need! Btw where did you get these clips? I've seen them reposted on quite a few channels (none of them explained the topics like you did though), but I didn't find these on any official lexus or toyota sources.
Thank you Sinsei Tinkerer! ❤️ Respect to you and your channel 👏 🙌 ❤️ 🙏
Great video. Current 4Runner owner, planning on buying one of these in about 7 years when I can afford it 😂
You'll find a way to get one new 😃 ✌️!
This was a really well done explanation! Audio quality could be better but everything else is 10/10!
Brilliant video, very informative and encouraging. I am on my 4th Toyota SUV and as a well published professional Wildlife Photographer, I have NEVER, EVER had a breakdown and I'm most fortunate to have never gotten permanently stuck in mud, due to lowering my testosterone and respecting my vehicles limits and exercising a good dose of common sense. The new articulation suspension, is something that has been sorely missed over adverse, rugged terrain for decades and it is very exciting for me as a decades long wildlife photographer, who always has cameras on my lap and other gear; binoculars, lenses and tripods etc. on the seats, for rapid convenience, to have a front suspension system, that does not send me and my gear slamming violently, from side to side, causing damage to my gear and really slowing me down- particularly, from reaching my subject, or site in a timely manner, to get the shot. This suspension system is a game changer, and if there is one thing I have come to learn about Toyota is that, their research and claims of improvements, are not to be trifled with, they are legit and shows a serious commitment on Toyota's part, to invest in your safety and trust and never betray that trust with gimmick claims. Simply put; Toyota designers deliver!... "Toyota will deliver you, where you need to go and bring you back happy!" I would love to have this exciting model, but even at this very attractive price, it's out of my budget at this time, thanks to the global Covid depression... If you can afford one, from me to you - I say... BUY, BUY, BUY!!! Cheers! 🎥🎬📸🎤
This would have been the one if they’d have kept and updated the V8 and did the split tailgate like the LC/LX used to have
I hear you, but this new V6 turbo is lighter, and has more power and torque than the outgoing V8. (Yet only 1 MPG improvement!) Shaking my head...
This video was awesome
Subscribed. I don’t know how many videos I have watched but I wish I would have seen this one first. Would have saved a lot of time.
Thank you for your support 🙏 ❤️ and for subscribing 😃 🇺🇸
Look forward to an off road comparison between the Lexus GX550, Toyota Land Cruiser, Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392, Ford Bronco Raptor, and Land Rover Defender.
Nice technical video! Does this affect or change body roll characteristics on road?
should improve roll control on road as well 😃
Is the steering wheel electronic or hydraulic?
Love the detail to this video. Is the EKDSS system only going to be available on the Overtrail trims?
yes... Lexus deleted EDSS on all other trims... 😢 see our recent GX550 RANT video for more details 🙏
Would like to nab one of these in the next few years
Maybe by the time they do a mid-model refresh
So do you like it? Are the geometry and articulation upgrades worth it compared to the v8 old models? If you could buy a 2023 460 or a 2024 new model…. What are you getting?
I'd wait a few years (2 bare minimum) for buying the GX550. Even though it's a Lexus product, there will undoubtedly be new model growing pains and potential QOL improvements after the initial feedback comes in. As a side benefit you'd avoid the dealer markups/insanity for trying to get the first year models. If I wind up getting one, I have a feeling I will still keep my '22 GX460 because it has a special place in my heart and I enjoy the oldschool feel. Vehicles like that are harder to come by and are really a period piece and testament to pinnacle engineering quality for it's time.
Great explanations here.
You did mention about e-KDSS is standard, but on Lexus website it is only mentioned in the Luxury and up trims. From your research, is this going to be offered on all trims like the traditional KDSS is on the current generation?
Thank you for subscribing... unfortunately looks like ekdss is only on the Overtrail trims... which is disappointing since all GX460s came with KDSS regardless of trim
Really cool upgrades, it almost makes me want to trade in my gx460, lol
if I get a luxury model will I be fine installing the overland tires and wheels? mainly highway miles no dirt for this automobile thank you since I want 3 row seating
yes go for it! 😃
How do you know so much - no extra weight due to the way it was welded - remarkable!?
It would help if T put some rust prevention during manufacturing. Current Prado has almost no wax inside the frame and rusts...
no other reviewers talks about butt-joints, king pin effect, rear braces and the geometry of the suspensions,...
Just subd
🙏 🤲 Thank you for subscribing 😃 ❤️
Will be mine next ride. As soon it will be available I’m ready.
My gx 11 years old it’s time to update but I’m looking a hybrid not 17 mpg. Thx is ugly why no gx 500 h?😢
The only negative is this gx is going to cost a pretty penny! Besides that is perfect!
Best info I've seen on this, thanks! Great improvements but I don't get why approach angle etc hasn't improved. Front bumper tear off 😢
from lexus: 26°
/24°
/22°
APPROACH/ BREAKOVER /DEPARTURE
ANGLE
Back in the beginning of 22 i pulled the trigger and bought a 21 Land Cruiser brand new and im happy i did.
I cant wait to see what they do to the 4Runner and LCPrado
yes!!! 😃
Got my 2023 GX Monday. Bought it before the change over. Glad i did
why do you prefer the current GX over the 550??
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD it’s old school. I bought it to last. Every turbo car I have owned has a turbo replaced by 130k. Have a family member with a garage and says the same regardless of make. This time it could be different but I do not want to be a the test case. Besides I live V8’s.
Do we know if the e-KDSS system included on the GX is the same one that was on the LC200?
yes, same system. dual cylinders up front, single in rear
I guess Ford made a mistake not selling me the ranger raptor when they had a chance... At $10k markup, I think I will get this lol. Assuming there isn't also a $10k markup...
Thumbs up for improved suspension performance! A potential downside being the compatibility with the aftermarket modifier scene. I know the GX line is finely tuned and calibrated as is. How compatible is the E-KDSS tech going to be with say bigger tires and a lift kit?? I believe that the stock GX parameters, geometry, and dimensions should not be aftermarket altered without careful considerations. If the GX550 engine was a naturally aspirated fuel injected V8 with over engineered cooling and reliability I would go visit my Lexus dealership and look one over. In the world of boxing the saying goes never fall in love with a fighter when placing your bets, If you do, he'll break your heart just about every time. Is Toyota as a car manufacturer past the peak of prime and on the decline?? Call me crazy but Toyota blew it on the GX550 drivetrain
Question for you- will this vehicle be off road worthy if I order the 24 luxury plus model ? What will the luxury loose as far as suspension beside the rear locker?
This is all pre-production information... specs will likley change... we'll have to wait until Lexus releases the final US production specs on all trims levels...
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD thank you for your reply- I appreciate your knowledge!
The pre-order build sheet that was released mentions that the e-KDSS system is only available on the Overtrain models. Kinda bummed about that since the old GX has KDSS standard on all trims.
@@ccabz08Right. I'm displeased with that.
Who knows ….the regular KDSS could be on the luxury model and the electronic version on the over trail
That is a significant amount. Could I safely assume a similar amount for the rear end? 12:53
the rear specs are unknown presently BUT articulation in the rear has never been an issue due to the solid axle... the "weakness" of independent front suspension has always been articulation... thus Toyota is making the front articulate like a sold axle up front... like a wrangler
Gotta be honest i don’t trust the new turbo engine. My 23 GX is en route from japan now, looking forward to the NA V8.
many people feel exactly like you do... your point is truly valid. 🙏
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD I’m all for being proven wrong, but I have to be proven wrong first. We’ll see how they are 5-7 years from now when they’re real world tested. For now though, can’t wait for mine to come in. Been following your channel to learn a lot and get ideas what mods I want to do.
Best case is the newer upgraded '22-23 GX may drop in price. Still love the V8
They know people are going to modify the off-road vehicles. Would’ve been good to keep that in mind
Who in their right mind would modify a Lexus 🤓
4.3” more front travel is significant. I look forward to seeing actual independent tests & off-road proof 🤙🏼
That’s probably how the new Prado will look like.
I'd like to see 35s become an optional upgrade on the overtrail+. The 33" tires just seems a bit behind the times (i.e. Bronco Sasquatch, Bronco Raptor, Wrangler Rubicon Extreme Recon, and RAM TRX).
good points... I don't think anyone can argue with taller tires since they don't affect geometry and increase clearance... great points... hopefully Lexus reads your comment... I think they will 😉
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD With a 110mm improvement in articulation, would 35's even fit?
Gas mileage would blow
That goes against what Toyota and Lexus are going for at the moment. They’re trying add gas mileage instead of stylish accessories and off road capabilities.
ekdss only comes with overtrail package not on all gx like the current
wow is that confirmed?
Wait till the v6 turbo hits 300k before you know it is reliable
If given a choice what would you buy? 3.3 diesel lc300 with 3rd row seats and fingerprint sensor or this lexus gx550. Both are fully loaded. Lc30/ has 110 ltr fuel tank capacity. Tell me your choice ?
@@oriondoublecrossed Diesel for sure, diesel engines produce less heat which means less wear and tear on the engine that is why it works. Gas engines produce more heat and with turbos even more. Also the HP to Displacement ratio has to be low for longevity. The best lexus/toyota engine which was the v8 was 381 hp/ 5.7 = 66 so is the current GX 310/4.6 = 301/4.6 = 65
@@ShinobiTekken Oh. I didnt know that. Thanks for the info bud !
Im cashing out on the next crypto run just for this
nice
eKDSS won't be available with any 7 seater options (Luxury+, etc)?? What a miss by lexus. Many of us need a 3rd row and want the off road capability. The overtrail should come with a 7 seater option or the luxury+ should offer an eKDSS option. Seems lexus doesn't like customers with more than 2 kids. Lame.
yep... lame and a huge mistake 😢... just took 4 kids and 1 wife on 2N17X... 3 rows and kdss made it possible... check latest video on channel 😀 ✌️
Those of us who watch and want to get our hands on one are gonna have to wait a long time. The first few will be sold in advance to special clients. The next group will carry a $10,000 mark-up in some dealerships and most will be the higher build. By 2025-2026 yours will be ready and something cooler will come along.
I hope Lexus releases a lift kit like TRD did with the Tundra
Trust the scoooience!
Great looking truck screaming for a diesel version with better mileage.
I'm sure the world market will get the twin turbo V6 diesel that is available now on the new Landcruiser 300 Series...
I can already see dealers taking HUGE markups for the 2024 models. Same thing for Land Cruisers. Watch your wallets and resist the urge to get the newest cool thing.
yep... you speak the truth 😢
like it overtrail no 3rd row !! easy to make a car camper . overlander out of
Nice video, but a lot of Toyota propaganda. First Lexus don't know Jack... They get what Toyota gives them. Second the tires don't just have to touch the ground, they need to maintain similar ground pressure. Thirdly the new GX has better articulation because it is wider with longer Lower A-Arms that supply more suspension travel. Period. No Toyota fairy dust or unicorn urine needed. Let's hope EKDSS lasts longer and fixes for less money than KDSS does.
this thing is same size as land cruiser 200..comparing it to the GX 460 is a joke. it's heavier and bigger, that powertrain is fantastic but should be compared to he 5.7L V8 as the vehicles are the same size!
we'll have a video coming out on the size difference... yes it has the same wheelbase as the LC300 now and longer and wider... some will see that as a pro... others a con... ✌️
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD the wheelbase is fine. 112.2”. The golden ratio. But for us who wheel these. The new 550 is same width. Same. Length as current 200. And. Most r likely. Same weight. 5800lbsComparing the 550 to the 460 is like comparing the old LC 200 to a 4 runner. Apples to oranges.
I just can't sanction this imposter. This is no son...I mean GX of mine! For a whopping +1 mpg, I found myself screaming and thrashing on the floor in tears, rending the very hairs from my head, over the v8 that was mercilessly stolen from us (not hyperbole). This is all bs; some political/regulation driven decision to do away with the legendary v8. Well tough, I'm only sticking with a v8 in a truck of this size. If Lexus won't provide, there's plenty of past year models to stick with and/or other manufacturers.
I agree with you and upset about the mpg, but the design is so much better than the previous models. It just looks more masculine. I also feel they should’ve had a triple Locker option as well
It’s all fun and games until the reliable V8 models eventually fade away to time.
Although unlike the Sequoia, this is being built in Japan. So maybe give them a chance?
@@faheemabbas3965 Nevuhz! But in all seriousness, I will approach this with a wait and see attitude. On paper, it was a patently stupid decision given the non-existent fuel efficiency "increase." Guessing that's what most run-of-the-mill drivers would have cared about. Removing the v8 invariably did more harm than good. More complexity = higher repair bill, always.
Jeez. Get a life.
Toyota has been making turbo diesels for a while, so although there is more heat and pressure, it's not like they don't know how to manage it. Yes, it's more expensive and complicated to fix and repair, but sadly, this is the way of the v8. Hopefully, I can keep mine for a loooooooong time
Dele
Trust the thing except the engine. It sucks big time! Look at all the issues with the Tundra.
ua-cam.com/video/GzGo5Tn27Ng/v-deo.html
Turbo = not good
ua-cam.com/video/GrODPGZaBmA/v-deo.html
I really dont like it, What yall think?
it looks good, but lost a lot of character and reliability confirmation... time will tell.
