I get that most folks are putting thier magnifying glass over the economy but one has to look at the overall picture
They were able to drop 2 cylinders, and add 49HP and 150(!) lb-ft of torque across a broader spectrum of the RPM band with reduced emissions
and while doing this they gained a mpg or two...
From an engineering perspective they got their cake and ate it as well.

EG, adjusted for inflation the GX was 22% cheaper in 2022-23 than it was in 2010. Now, the price will (presumably) get raised upwards of 10 grand or more, pushing it into a range where it's simply not as competitive. The lack of KDSS until upper trims is something new to the GX, so there's far less value in purchasing the lower trim levels than there used to be. The price is going to be MUCH higher because of this buy-in requirement if you want KDSS. I imagine it will still sell decent enough though as there is a following. I bought a 2022 GX blackline for $62k (standard KDSS and decent features)... if I want KDSS on a GX550 it's probably going to cost closer to $80 grand, which pushes it up to high trim pickup truck territory, which has far more utility. This will be my first Lexus. Already have a small deposit at the dealer.
Coming from Porsche (currently own three) there have been several surprises for me.
    - $80k + and it comes with vinyl seats. This is surprising to me.
    - I asked the dealer when will the configurator be live so I can spec it and submit for the build? He laughed. Said it doesn’t work like Porsche. They get a number of allocated vehicles in and then anyone “on the list can accept or pass”.
    - little to no options for a premium vehicle. With Porsche, you can spec so many different options, types of leather, colors, color of stitching, even if you want leather wrapped on the air vent slats! (Yes it’s a ridiculous)
However, I’m excited about the GX more for its capabilities than if I can pick the stitching colors on the sun visor.
I’d be more excited if they offer off-road accessories, racks, bumper, snorkel… etc.

And honestly, when has a motor ever been able two deliver on those two things plus have good fuel economy and then also be reliable. That’s just the trade off. But, one of the things that impresses me are the nice materials they use on the inside, as you mention. I'm very impressed with the technology updates of the 23 RX, but I am turned off by the heavy use of suede where leather should be. I really feel that the use of suede - although it feels nice - overall cheapens the interior. I don't even know if it would wear or fade like the leather. The vehicles are shipped to places like Nordic countries, New Zealand and the Middle East to see how all components including the interior perform. The suede should last beyond the mechanical bits. This has been the norm for a loonnnng time. It is quite fascinating that many OEMs just forgot to let the masses know, as they do not mention these in their brochures and marketing materials. Product liability related laws makes this a continuous necessity, and along with TPS method all the major OEMs should have no problem in proving the durability of their products...

I know you said you had to dig to find 10 things wrong with the new GX and it seems like it. The panoramic roof for example, cannot be had in the Premium + or Overtrail trims because it would lower the towing capacity from 8K (glass is heavy). Look at the Tundra and even the F150 with those roofs, the pay load suffers when those are added. As for fuel economy, yes, 17 is not earth shattering but I'd guess that the 17 number is for the Overtrail trims with 33" AT tires and not the regular trims with city shoes.
The true let down is the back door (as not mentioned in your video). The swing gate is gone and that's okay but it should have been a split hatch like what the 200 series Land Cruiser had or even the Range Rover. For those that never had one of these hatches, yes they are/were that good and worth it.
Instead, you complained about paint and compared it with $6500 paint colors from the G Wagon or said that a yellow GX would be nice. Would it? Would a school bus yellow GX really sell? Probably not.
Why don't we just accept it for what it is (an improvement from the older version sans the tailgate)?

Most modern cars getting 3-4mpg improvements (comparing against similar displacement engines from 5-10 years ago), mostly because of weight savings and aerodynamic improvements. Lexus/toyota clearly prioritized the boxy off-road look, the body-on-frame design, low end power/towing capability, etc--which all work against gas mileage. I care about MPG/convenience too, but you just gotta be aware of the tradeoffs.

Excellent points. Final EPA numbers should be better than initially quoted because 17 mpg is dismal. Lexus should have revealed hybrid numbers at launch. Right on again with the interior. The offroad-centric Defender offers a much more interesting interior color palette and Lexus does have better color/trim options in the outgoing GX and the rest of its crossover/SUV lineup. I'd say the styling on the exterior is a HOMERUN, for sure. However............ it really is missing a lot and I'm glad you are the one who doesn't mince words. The lack of the V8 is a shame but I guess we are just going to have to accept that. The V 6 turbo may be a good engine, but it will require a lot more attention, and oil changes and care if you really want it to last. That's just the nature of turbos. The gas economy or lack there off, has never been a deal breaker for me in any vehicle. I have been using premium fuel in my trucks for years so I'm used to it, the only one that doesn't require it is my Colorado. The no KDSS and all the other features that were standard across the previous GX 460 line, those may all be deal breakers for me. The no third row seat in the Overtrail is just dumb, the fact that the second row does not fold flat is also not good. I would love to see how the seats fold on the other trim levels. At least on the GX 460 the seats are pretty flat. We all just have to wait and see.

Overtrail has big 33s but smaller 18" wheels -> lighter wheels but bigger tires, likely best ride quaity (due to meatier tires, and eKDSS)
Premium has ~31s with a 20" wheel -> middle of the bunch in both dimensions, perhaps best value here for economy / ride quality

Fun fact: We can get much much MUCH better MPG, we could easily get a V8 that gets 40MPG... the problem is that it would pollute way more, that is thw sad truth....fuel economy keeps going down as the pollution standards get harder to meet... causing us to use more fuel.

[Getting 40 mpg from a 5.7-liter LS1 V8 requires more than just low-speed cruising, however. As the video explains, this car has a special “lean burn” engine tune that thins out the air-fuel mixture at highway speeds, specifically between 50 and 75 mph. To gauge highway fuel mileage, the car was filled up at a gas station near a Chicago highway and driven to Wisconsin and back, where it was refilled at the same pump several hours later.
So why don’t automakers do this sort of thing? Running an engine lean can have negative consequences, higher NOx emissions being among them. Lean engines also run hotter, which can take a toll on components over time. Whether the lean-tune established for this Corvette is aggressive enough to drastically affect these parameters is unknown, but we can’t deny that hitting 40 mph in a high-horsepower sports car is indeed impressive.
      ]
There is a Trade off for that ─ Heavier Vehicles (heavier Engines) ─ Like Teslas will worn out the Roads and of course, the Tires faster.
[the pollution standards get harder to meet] About this, there are so many unregistered Vehicles ─ Mostly ICE Diesel in Rural China, Indonesia, India and of course Russia that ─ undocumented, polluted the Air. If like what we are seeing the Trend ─ China is shifting to BEV and PHEV, Hybrids ─ there would be less Vehicles demanded Gasolines then "mpg" is less of an important factor ─ "Supply and Demand" Equation is tipped toward less consumptions overall worldwide. It did not mean that China with BEV (Electrified Vehicles) will reduce CO2 Emissions, The Government Data of China shown, China relies more and more on burning Fossil Fuels for the Electric Powers Generations ─ it was standing at about 80-85% of Fossils mostly Coals used to have generated last year and 2021 ─ where the Droughts that caused Hydro-powered to almost Zero.
And The Scientific Fact: That those Old Electric Generators/Plants are not efficient as the Modern Vehicles ─ Our Cars, mostly 1 foot mufflers above Roads' surfaces ─ CO2/ CO emissions some are absorbed by the Trees along the Roads/Streets. While as those Chimneys of Electric Powers Plants piped up 300 feet above the Ground ─ All leftover Methane or Coals or 🛢🛢burned are up into the Air/ Ozone faster.
As a Consumer, we/I would welcome and like to see more BEV by those chose (can afford to) buy ─ that will assure the Gasolines at the ⛽ ⛽ pumps going down.

Maybe the red interior will come to an F-sport trim later

I dont like how big the new one is going to be. I think the 460 is the perfect size, tighter turn radius than an RX, fits perfectly in my garage ans parking spaces. The 550 is like 6 inches wider and 5 inches longer
(EDIT) also they put the rear wipers in the middle of the back window, zonk!

Oh yeah ... Should've mentioned the wiper!

All valid points for this new GX! It’s more like a Toyota, not a Lexus GX! Why purchase this over the LX? The new GX is too large-hard to fit into the garage!

At least when you go "ON THROTTLE!", it should be better lol.

@@edmundcharles5278 Well you kinda get majority he LX features here for about 20-30k less money lol
Really the question is why purchase the LX over this if they're identical wheelbase and size

Love your site!! Do you know by any chance if a roof rack with rails will be available on the Lexus GX 550 Luxury Plus due to the panoramic sunroof? I know it is avail now on the newer RX. Thanks again

I think the whole point was trying to keep this vehicle below 100k.

The only relevant comment in my opinion was the fuel issue. The rest is petty stuff. This is an extremely dependable, capable and reliable vehicle, that holds a way better resale value than Mercedes Benz, BMW, Audi, Land Rover and all the American made counterparts. I know because I have owned all of them.

I'm interested in the Ovetrail. I won't buy a 3-row because I'll never use it and it takes up too much room. As for the panoramic roof, I don't want it. Heck, I'd rather not have a sunroof either.

Gas yea, wireless charging must be standard, ambient lighting must be standard. I hope it’s not the size of a H3 hummer. Zero wood 🪵pano roof should be an option on all models

EKanooRacingTV got the LX600 f sport tuned for around 5 and half sec 0-60. Also there is JB4 for Tundra so I'm interested to see if there's something for the gx
