For me, this is like listening to a penthouse forum for guitar. lol. Watching his interviews at Gitcon, I have come to the conclusion that Phil McKnight is a superior interviewer. I'm guessing, but I think the reason for this is that he has spent many hours casually discussing general and gear related topics in many different situations for years. More than likely he has many friends, and acquaintances in the retail side of the business, and has spent countless hours figuring out what works and doesn't work for him as a player. Listening to answers and not blindly pushing through questions allows the interviewee to naturally let their knowledge flow without micro managing the interview. only interjecting his experiences when it is applicable, and adds to the topic at hand. It's probably natural and he has never given much thought to any of what I'm talking about. The check cleared Phil...thanks...lol
Yep, I agree. it helps that he is realaxed, non threatening, and doesn't let his ego get in the way.. I've enjoyed watching everyone so much. I think the format and forum that was/is GuitCon has really allowed people to shine and show their true selves. Everyone seemed so natural and normal.
He is one of the few that also prepares himself and can lead the interviewed person. He's great.
One of the best resources for guitar nerds on the internet. Period.
So true. Phillip is a level headed and reliable guy!
Hmm? You saw Phillip and thought of Penthouse Forum. That's an interesting analogy that requires no further thought nor consideration. Thanks for the reset.
I love that You me Steve and TK hung out all week and none of us really did any videos together hahaha . Awesome video buddy
Really late to the party but still timeless. Great video. Wish more were like this. Exploring and explaining the "why's" of making a guitar or a pickup a certain way is so good! Follow me on this one... most of us are still listening to reviews on far less than ideal sound systems. Even a good computer sound system will not replicate what a setup sounds like in a live situation. So playing a guitar on a video will not give many of us what we want to know. I suppose there is a growing number of guitarists who are only bedroom or youtube players - so that might be ok. But for us holdouts who are still entertaining live I much prefer a video like this. Thanks so much. If my flimsy guitar talents could justify a Suhr Alt T it would be my next guitar.
Everything Suhr makes is fantastic and Pete is a master of tone.
I'll be honest . I wasn't sure who Pete thorn was before this. I bet many, like me, are now fans. He is super good! And he is humble like everyone stated . The phil x and Pete thorn vids sold me. 2 new guys to listen to
Jason Keaton you took the words right out of my mouth. I wasn't very familiar with Pete before GuitCon but I'll sure as hell check him out now.
If you don't know Pete Thorn, you don't know Tim Pierce. You should know of Tim.
Markle2k I know tim pierce . I'm not sure what happened with PT. I'm on it now!
I figured that if you missed one half of the Tim and Pete show, you had to have missed both.
Markle2k ah I haven't seen that! So I'll check it out
This has got to stop.. all of you having fun, getting to be friends... New gear, demos... It's too much... My sneakers have holes. I'm starting to run out of frozen food. Amps, oh, I have amps... I can't even play a complete song yet but I have 9 amps from 1 watt to 100 watt, Oh and they are all tube... of course, must be tube. Guitars oh yes, I've got guitars.... Thornbuckers... Oh yes... I gotta have Thornbuckers... Dang it. hahaha... Love you guys... Thanks for a great review, interview, and run through.. Lot's of insight here. Keep em coming, thanks Phil, thanks Pete.
underrated comment hahaha
Thanks Phil for catching Pete to showcase his signature guitar. He’s such a humble guy. His guitar sounds and looks awesome. I haven’t seen anyone carry them or is it only by special order.
Steven Ohata custom order through suhr only :( ...for now! ;)
Pete Thorn has a voice that could make him an FM radio star! That guitar is wonderful!
this is a great interview!!! thanks phil and thanks pete!
I learnt more about pickup sound by watching this video than by experimenting and playing many years. Thanks guys
The only signature guitar I'd ever buy. Have his pickups, awesome.
If you would have told me,”Gold top, black headstock.” I would’ve thought ugly. But seeing it, it’s beautiful.
Big fan of both these guys, would love to see them collaborate on more videos.
Beautiful axe. Love the all mahogany build.
It's both enjoyable and educational to listen to knowledgeable folks talk about what they love. Great conversation. Thanks for sharing.
Pete and Phil. What's not to like. Two of the best UA-cam guys. Love the sound of that Suhr.
Pete Thorn. Always the kind and multi genre talented. Amazing.
That was great! I'm a big fan of Pete's work, and it was great to hear about your experience with the humbuckers giving your "B" string a voice.
After I acquire a P90 guitar a Suhr Pete Thorn model is next on my list. I've been wanting one for a while and this interview really fanned the flames. Great video!
Great stuff from two of the best! Thanks guys! ( Big Fan Sirs)
Fun interview, and Phillip is a natural at this. Subscribed!
Both guitars look amazing! Great video Phil!
So much fun listening to two guitar nerds who know their gear discussing different aspects of guitars and features.
So true about Lower Output pickups. Allows the guitar to breathe. More airy top end. Less nasal. Dan & Mick from TPS Preach about 7.2 = Max resistance ( unless doing metal ). I have a Suhr with Lollar Dirty Blonde's and it Nails the: David Gilmour, SRV, Mark Knopfler & Nile Rodgers Tones that I was after.
Pickup WISDOM BOMBS droppin up in here!
really nice video, one can tell both guys are passionate about guitars, take guitar nerdyness to the next level
Before this video I never really got the whole Suhr thing. There is to it than meets the eye. Great interview!!!
This is great discussion on pickups and player preferences! Great vid!!!
Hey loved the Guitcon videos. Looked like a blast!
Love his guitar and it was cool how he appreciated what you said about it as well with it being modern but classic at the same time. When I built my own guitar I went for a Les Paul shape but did the SG control layout and added two three way mini switches for series/parallel/single for each humbucker. I also did 24 frets with the PRS 25" scale length with locking TOM bridge and string through body. i went with Gretsch pickup rings too to give it a cool vibe.
Awesome. Thanks to both of you.
Luv Johnny Mart, luv fender, luv these videos...a lot of fun. Full of positive energy. TY!
Being a Nerd, and especially a "techie type" Nerd, is never a thing to apologize for. Be proud without being arrogant, at least on the inside, that you are intelligent enough to understand and comprehend acoustics, physics, electronics, mechanics, etc. I really appreciate getting to watch this video; I would really have liked to have been there and been part of the discussion. These are two very intelligent men discussing things that interest me, and I'm sure it would have been fun to be there, hang out, drink a beer with them, and "talk guitar." I miss Tom Petty already......I feel like I lost a brother.
Thanks Phil! Would love to see you post a video summarizing your GuitCon experiences!
Modern and Old.... yes!!! I just bought my first suhr yesterday, Garnet Red PT sig. That phrase modern and old is exactly how I feel. Delicious.
The Suhr guitar is looking fantastic and sounds awesome. The Framus is pretty too :)
Loved the talk about pickups and lower output/wider range!
I generally prefer a 25.5" scale but I did buy a Johnny Marr Jaguar and absolutely love it!
It's a beast of a neck for sure.
That gold guitar sounds and looks wicked
Love love Suhr guitars! In fact just picked one up and having fun playing it. Suhr is one of the under rated guitars out there.
awesome vid! two of my favorite youtube channels chopping it up on one vid!
Hot pickups work fine if you use your volume control. With the control half way they are clear...all the way up overdriven
Also big fan of Johnny Marr. His signature jag is wicked. Got tele from magnificent 7 limited edition rose wood neck in sunburst that I really enjoy playing.
I always thought Jags were cool but was "afraid" of the 24" scale as I always leaned towards 25.5" scale guitars. But I ended up buying a black JM Jag because I couldn't put it down in a store and it is now one of my favorite guitars. Plays and sounds fantastic!
Nice
Warning: Extreme guitar nerd warning.
Awesome.
Oh man, re-upload in mono or something. Only the right channel is working.
XC2long4u agree!...barely hear the conversation and guitar was very loud!?....fantastic interview though!
Damn confortable interviews Phillip !
Strange sound (guitar mostly on the left, speaking all on the right?) but lovely guitar and a great chat.
Martin Cliffe - same here. 99% in my right ear
Same
Ditto
That being said... Once the playing kicks in holy fuck did it sound awesome in my vehicle!
Its driving me crazy. I REALLY want to watch this but the off balance is just driving me nuts...sorry Phil
JOHNNY MARR - yes! Johnny needs more love from the UA-cam community. So influential, so unique.
Way to go Phil! Hanging with PT!
Parallel bridge humbucker is really nice - give it some P90 chime without all of the split-coil noise and tone loss.
Great video! Pete is awesome and I'm seriously GASing for that guitar!
Pete seems to be such a great guy to talk to. He will listen to what you're saying and than he will tell you something interesting back.
I moved from America Standard to Suhr and there was no probs with transition. I have Standard Suhr C shape on all of mine and no issues>
Strange but I just bought this guitar and My Ibanez 1986 Roadstar II also has locking saddles and the first time I picked up the Pete Thorn guitar it reminded me of the Ibanez. I’ll bet he has one! hA! The 2 guitars feel very similar in my hands! You can get one for $3 to $500 bucks! The Ibanez feels just as good!
Embarrassingly I had no idea who Pete Thorne was.. but that was sick! Great video Phil! 🤘🏻🇦🇺🤘🏻
I have a Thornbucker Plus and it sounds amazing in my Suhr Classic Pro
Grab the guitar, shoulder Pete out of the way, and review it, demo it, provide thoughtful insight, McKnight style. We all love PT, that lucky bastard, and we know, he knows his gear. ;)
Welcome home guys.
Gr8 vid guys! That guitar is awesome! It’s like a Gibson-Strat-banez... lol. Sounded gr8 & looked cool. Pete seems like a good guy too.
That "Gold Top" look is SO cool!
Being a fender guy but always thinking the Les Paul gold top was one of the best color combinations ever on a guitar this is one sweet ax .I'm a SC kinda guy but the HB's neck split sounded amazing the l'il bit I heard.
Awesome looking/sounding guitar.
hey man just wanted to say i like the neon logo it looks really cool
Love the Pete Thorn Suhr. I would order it lefty and hardtail!
awesome interview
Damn. My favorite neck shape is on my early 90's American Standard Strat. So now I want to try a Suhr...
awesome video, but my recommendation is don't pan the voices and the instruments too hard left or right
I get the idea of give it some separation but it's not super nice for prolonged comfortable listening
just my opinion tho, still awesome review :D
great video!! Where'd the thornbucker review video go??
Man Pete is cool. Great Vid
That would be the perfect guitar for me, but at $3500 it's probably not gonna happen.
PT knows his gear :-)
Scale length changes the clarity of the harmonics.
Hey Phil, are you shy? You look a little starstruck here. Or maybe you have a cold? I like Pete, thanks for the video. I do wish you guys had jammed though. :-( Goldtops seem to be the rage right now. A lot of companies re making them. I bought the new Prestige Guitars DC Coupe Ace goldtop and it looks very cool. Plays great too. :) Your guitar looks amazing.
Rory Gallagher said that he blocked off the saddle but kept the springs because somehow his strat sounded better than the one that fender gave him which was 'string' thru hardtail but without the springs ? Just saying ..
7:13 HE PLAYED THE ALEX LIFESON CHORD
Pete Thorn is the man..
Best on GuitCon 2017!
Phil no voice audio. The only audio I hear is when one of you guys play, or strum the guitar.
Pete's guitar is cool!
What is that guitar in Philip's hands?
What is Phil playing(holding) it is gorgeous!
Does Pete pluck with the corner of his pick? At one point it looks like he has it turned sideways.
Thumbs up x 1000 !
Hey Phil. Nice video with Peter Thorn. Beautiful guitar. What price point for his signature Suhr guitar?
$ 3,495.00
johnny440 ouch. Out of my price range. Thanks for the info.
welcome Juan, still cheaper than a lot of Fender Custom Shop guitars :)
True. Is Suhr guitar as good as Fender custom shop guitar?
they are both excellent guitars in my opinion
Did you ever do a review of Godin freeway classic leaftop electric guitar ?
Unfortunately, Robert Godin is almost unknown among Yankee Fender/Gibson hardheaded followers (Too bad for Yankee hardheads).
Godins are awesome guitars, entirely build in Canada, out of Canadian native woods (- rosewood/ebony fretboards) and... they cost a fraction of those overpriced and overrated LP's...
*"... step out of your comfort zone..."*
Did you hear that you "Fender/Gibson Hardheads" ???
There is a whole new world in guitar design/building coming at you (like it or not).
Carvin, Ernie Ball, Paul Reed Smith, *Suhr* (USA), Robert Godin (Canada), Duesenberg, Framus/Warwick & Höfner (Germany), Hagstrom (Sweden) etc..., not to forget of Leo Fender (The "Godfather" of them all) who never stopped searching for new ways of designing and building guitars/amps/pickups... 🐳 ♫♫ ❀(~‿~)❀ ♫♫
just about everything new in the last 40 yrs has been to make single coils & strats sound better...guess the pros can still tweak it further.
Hey Phil, I have a 2017 American Pro strat. Can I put a pair of those thornbuckers in it without rerouting the body? It is originally a SSS configuration. I would like to convert to HSH with coil split. Is this feasible?
Was Pete playing through a Sonzera 50?
Yes he was
He didn't play much, but it sure sounded pretty good.
Two cool cats!
Love the guitar! Has anyone seen one for sale somewhere?
Humbucker Music
What justified the ridiculous price of Suhr guitars?
Quality of everything, from materials, to design. to QC, warranty, etc.
Also I find that theyre not expensive compared to a lot of mainstream less quality brands. Perhaps get a better paying job?
Best quality hand made in America. You gonna Pay
Pete's one of the coolest guys out there, not sure how I missed this video. You should check out his channel. ua-cam.com/users/sinasl1videos
Thanks Denjatube!
Hard to listen to with voices panned right, and guitars down the center. What happened? RIP ear drums to whoever is listening with headphones. Ya gotta crank up the volume to hear them talk, then turn down when guitar is played.
Has Phil put down that Framus guitar yet? He's been hugging it like a long lost girlfriend for the whole of GuitCon!
Well he did buy one.....
Just imagine that guitar with an ivory tip on the selector switch...
Would that "ivory tip" make the guitar play better Lol... ???
Just think where *IVORY* comes from. There is a great probability that there was a living being that got killed for that "ivory tip".
I agree it would be an awesome addition. An Ivory color tip FULL MOON. Doesn't have to be made of Ivory...
Is anyone else having trouble hearing the interview and only hearing the guitar??
how long is this guitcon odyssey?
It was 5 days long last week. Depends on how much footage/sessions were filmed by each You Tuber...
It went for 5 days,,, Monday through Friday... It's over now... Everyone shipped out last Friday.
I'M GONNA START A MAHOGANY STRAT BUILD TOMORROW I'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO BUT AFTER SEEING PETES I'M GOING TO FOR SURE NOW. I THINK I'LL DO A FLAMED MAPLE TOP WITH A BURST THOUGH INSTEAD OF THE GOLD. REALLY LIKE THE THOSE THORN PICKUPS TOO I'LL HAVE TO SEE IF I CAN COME CLOSE TO WIRING UP A SET SIMILAR, I'VE BEEN BUILDING GUITARS FOR A WHILE BUT I'M PRETTY NEW AT BUILDING PICKUPS, STILL LEARNING ALL THE LITTLE TWEAKS.
Petey..
Pretty freaky there
Maybe it's the haircut. 😀
3:09 Wai one goddamn minute, Is Pete Canadian?
correct, he is.
