Very important. The 4-pin connector should go to the motherboard 4-pin connector, and NOT the 4-pin from the 20+4 main connector. The motherboard 4-pin connector is sometimes packaged as a 4+4 connector, just uncouple it to get what you need. This setup works with mini Pc boxes, but you need to use the WIFI port, not the m.2 port. Make sure you have the NGFF cable or use a mini-PCIe to NGFF adapter cable.
4:35 this is because, the egpu has to run through the laptops native graphics before displaying. While the external gpu does most of the heavy lifting it still gets bottlenecked
using the pci-e card you get only 2.5gb/s of throughput and if you use the internal display it will half that even more...therefore the throughput is horrible if using the internal display...the best way is to use the eGPU's display output to a monitor and set Windows to Projector mode.

This slot is neither of those. It is actually the older mini pcie used for wifi cards, and carries only x1 lanes… not optimal, but still better than integrated graphics
The reason your GPU was not used was cause usually there is a display cable running from your GPU to your screen, so right now your external GPU can communicate with the internal hard ware but not your display as there is nothing connecting your GPU to it.

probably the reason it doesn't work with the laptop screen is because most laptop, including yours that you showed in the video has A HDMI OUT port,it sends out video output.you cannot send signal the other way using hdmi technology.what you can do is use the igpu while not opening any apps, and set the app you want to use the gpu on to high performance(windows detect dedicated gpu as high performance mode and iglu as power saving mode)then whenever you open the app you set to high performance,boom.magic.this is common with laptops that have a mobile/full sized dedicated gpu in them,LTT used this trick to game on a mining gpu that has no outputs.
This is dead wrong. If you look closer, you'd see that nothing is connected to the laptops HDMI out port. However, an adapter is used to attach an HDMI cable to the laptops PCIe port. Obviously this is not a standard HDMI connection because the laptop is interfacing with the card using Vulkan or DirectX APIs, which do not utilize HDMI technology for CPU GPU communication. In this case, it is possible for video to be sent back into the pc through the HDMI cable due to the special implementation
As someone who regularly watches your FFXIV lyric videos, this was not the channel I expected to find when looking for an external GPU to run MH Wilds.

you know i love it how people always state things like "i can't afford space for a desktop and i don't want to deal with all the extra cables just to get into pc gaming, a laptop for me is perfect", yet to get a graphics card to work with a laptop, you still need a desktop power supply, and the pci express slot that comes with that dock, not only that but unless you have an ethernet cable or an extra usb wifi card, you cannot get back online, because that's how the graphics card is connecting and communicating to your laptop computer, and a project like this cannot be exactly "cheap" either all this hardware have to be purchased including the graphics card and every time you want to use the laptop on the go you have to disconnect all those cables and reinstall the wifi card, its doable but for people like me overtime this kind of strategy would become a headache.

@@DrSmoke2104 yea but again it's not coz of v4 pcie lol it's coz about 95% of the games don't support either of multi gpu support. My gpu gives same performance even putting it in either of the slot.
probably the reason it doesn't work with the laptop screen is because most laptop, including yours that you showed in the video has A HDMI OUT port,it sends out video output.you cannot send signal the other way using hdmi technology.what you can do is use the igpu while not opening any apps, and set the app you want to use the gpu on to high performance(windows detect dedicated gpu as high performance mode and iglu as power saving mode)then whenever you open the app you set to high performance,boom.magic.this is common with laptops that have a mobile/full sized dedicated gpu in them,LTT used this trick to game on a mining gpu that has no outputs.
Maybe Turn off integrated Graphic (if you can) so that it switch to other Graphic/Card.
As someone who regularly watches your FFXIV lyric videos, this was not the channel I expected to find when looking for an external GPU to run MH Wilds.
Conclusion : buy a new laptop/PC or play on lower settings.
Linus don't support 3rd party modifications and hacking and he showed it doesn't work .but you did this, you are one of the hidden pro.
I will only need it to render 3D animation and maybe speed up my drawing software .
God this is still a batter option then just to buy a complete new laptop.
And I am broke .
Because all of my money did go to dealing with this laptop how ironic.
So kapag ang unit mo ay integrated gpu lang talaga (Intel HD) nothing to worry about disabled anything, matic na made-detect nalang nya yung external gpu.
4:55 You can use a HDMI ghost dongle.
Using this method, does the performance will be the same compared when using an external monitor?
Nice video man.
I wish there was a tech through which we could us external processor. I am stuck with my i3 processor on dell inspiron. And I wish I could upgrade it. But unfortunately, it is hard soldered on the motherboard 😭😭😭
do you use an ssd? if no, upgrade it this minute!
cool! This is cyberpunk looks!
you know i love it how people always state things like "i can't afford space for a desktop and i don't want to deal with all the extra cables just to get into pc gaming, a laptop for me is perfect", yet to get a graphics card to work with a laptop, you still need a desktop power supply, and the pci express slot that comes with that dock, not only that but unless you have an ethernet cable or an extra usb wifi card, you cannot get back online, because that's how the graphics card is connecting and communicating to your laptop computer, and a project like this cannot be exactly "cheap" either all this hardware have to be purchased including the graphics card and every time you want to use the laptop on the go you have to disconnect all those cables and reinstall the wifi card, its doable but for people like me overtime this kind of strategy would become a headache.
You really just need to buy a desktop lol or a laptop with decent graphics card.
Many of us have spare parts bruh
@@universityrepairFL not all of us have spare parts it depends on where you are and how much things cost.
Was the thumbnail a successful way to connect it?
Very informative but damn it feels like 2009ish watching this vid
That makes it better
Thanks so much for the video, mate! I wanna get something like this for my HP EliteBook 8560p, but I'm not too sure about how to go about doing things.
Blayze Deville yeah i have this machine
I have the 8560w and I'm looking into the same thing. If you end up finding any info or do it yourself, I'd like to hear the update
same model i have . i am also planning to install egpu
can you use 100% gpu usage on this?
#1 set your bios back to gpu switching allowed
#2 goto device manager & disable the dedicated gpu.
#3 nvidia control panel and make sure it is using the extrenal gpu for physx and world program settings.
now it should work for gaming on the laptops screen
Just a question bro, I'm planning to connect my egpu to m.2 nvme PCIe 3.0, is there any configuration needed to make it work?
In order to make the external GPU work on your laptop screen you need to be able to use a thunderbolt type c connection.
his laptop is too damn old to hAve thunderbolt interface that is why he is using the PCIE x4 because its the only way his laptop would support his graphic card.
@@michaeljaen5261 yeah I know I was saying it would work only if he had a thunderbolt port. 🙂
@@coachnutt61 for sure if it is a newer model of laptop that supports thunderbolt, but in older laptop only PCIE and Express card sure it will work.
@@coachnutt61 how to know if my laptop has a thunderbolt port?
@@_quixote it will have to have a Intel CPU in it and what looks like a USB c connection but it'll have a lightning bolt above it.
You need external GPU and Monitor as laptop has not any hdmi-in port. To view in laptop screen, You need to remove your laptop screen and attach to hdmi controller board. This is like DIY works and the reason why I dropped the idea to add external GPU.
You will Probably already have found out but, You can go to Display settings, Scroll down and look for a small text that says graphics settings, click on it and then you have to choose the game or Programm you want to use the Gpu with. click on browse and find the game application in your files. Then it takes u back to the settings screen where you can see the program you chose. click on it and click on options and choose the gtx 560. Now it should always use the gtx 560 for that specific program. and u will probably be able to set it back to switching gpu mode in the bios, beacause then everything on your laptop screen is rendered with gt 640m except for the games, im not sure though. but doing so does add a bit off delay. Everything your gtx 560 is doing has to travel back through the pcie port to the gt 640m and then to the laptop screen so i myself would use a seperate monitor anyway.
Okay, im newbie here. I just want to try using external VGA to my laptop. But my laptop is Thinkpad X280, so i don't have spare nvme slot, only WWAN slot. But it have thunderbolt 3 port and usb 3.0 port
Can i still use this thing with thunderbolt cable or usb 3.0 cable to usb port?
Hello po sir, can i ask po if i can attach the same setup as yours if i have integrated graphics? i have

Yes. I just did it with mine. Laptop screen doesn't work when the eGPU is connected and turned on though, so you will need to connect a monitor to the eGPU you choose to use.
My house suddenly blew up, but you told me in your disclaimer. So no worries, you're good. 🤣
I'm really like a free college here Because here he gives in detail ... oh yeah one thing whether VGA like GT1030 is still working or not thx
use windows 8.1 OS to enable use of own laptop screen as display from the GPU, windows 7 and 10 will NOT allow you to use laptop screen as display . . however using external monitor screen is always advisable.
Just use an hdmi ghost
Now you can cook eggs while gaming, Thanks Hungrychad!

I think you ran into this issue because your laptop's display was connected to the cpu's integrated graphics and not the dedicated graphics card
I stumled on this video just now...well, good work man, but it was old news when you released it. No disrespect though, some people just don't follow Linus, Jay...OK, that being said, you can find solution for your problem with no picture on laptop screen at Linuse's channel...basically they explain how to make your other card give signal through integrated graphics output in Windows 10. It's the same feature which sets what card should be used with what application if you had your dedicated card left turned on.
Nvm me, just go thorough Linus Tech Tips and you'll find solution there. Good video, keep posting, knowledge is power 👍💪

I hope you realized eventually that you are supposed to take the video out through the laptops built-in hdmi port. It's been 8 months, so I hope, but don't assume.
Does it read the full power of gpu in that way ?
Nice upload. Subscribed.
If your pc had thunderbolt connection, is it possible to connect from hdmi to directly to laptop's thunderbolt?
Not all type c port is thunderbolt so its hard to say. Just double check your laptop model on the internet to see if its type c or thunderbolt
