Perihelion: The Prophecy Review

  • One of my friends recommended this Amiga Cyperbunk RPG from 1993 for me to review It was well received when it came out ..scoring high numbers in Amiga magazines and placing on some top lists but almost 30 years later as of this recording...its not talked about much
From Edvard Toth's blog (He played a major role in making the game)
"Perihelion - a world where advanced science and malevolent Gods exist side by side; where genetic engineering and occultism evolved together; where mutation is a way of life. Oh well. The game was created by only 3 people under pretty challenging conditions (don’t even ask). Taking this project to completion while going to school still remains to be the most difficult but most rewarding thing I have ever done.
As far as my role in the project goes: I did all the artwork, I was responsible for the concept, the rule-set and virtually the entire design of the game, provided the story narrative (in form of about 80 pages worth of in-game script and dialogue) and handled project-management duties. In retrospect I would do a LOT of things differently with Perihelion but nevertheless, in its day it had very high production values, some pioneering technical achievements and a highly sophisticated core rule-set and combat system which we never did quite manage to polish and push to its limits.
One signature element of the game was the shared, common 32-color two-tone palette which in retrospect was a pretty bold move but it was a key element in providing a unique look and a very consistent atmosphere.
The game eventually climbed to #9 on Amiga Action’s prestigious “50 best RPGs of all time” list."

Hail, friend! I just started playing this game, and I gave your channel a shout-out at the beginning of the character creation video. (A 1 1/2 hour vid, insane, but I'm loving the game so far.) I hope you're doing okay, as you've had no new uploads for awhile now. Stay cool and be well. :)

Awesome video, Che. I couldn't find any other video on youtube just about this game, so I think you are the first one to do a video review of it. There was only one video I watched which even mentioned it at all, and that was a compilation video on Amiga RPGs, where this one was ranked like 3rd on the list or something. But that was the only video I found which even mentioned it and there wasn't any completely focused on this game until your video. It is very impressive that only 3 people made this game. Its kinda like the original Fallout which also had a very small team, but I think this game's team was even smaller. I wonder if Tim and Leonard ever played this game or knew about it? Maybe it might have influenced them in some way. This came out a few years before Fallout, so who knows. But either way, its a very obscure game, and its great that you made a video on it. I hope it will help this game get some greater exposure, and who knows, maybe whoever owns the rights to it might eventually dust it off and make a sequel or something. What makes this game extra obscure is the fact it is an Amiga exclusive, and the Amiga itself didn't have anywhere near as big of a market as the PC did.
As for the linear story, it sucks to hear that, but I can forgive a game for having a linear story, just so long as the story is good. Fallout 3 also had a linear story, but it was also a bad story so nothing could redeem that. But I'm glad you consider the story of Perihelion to be good. I'm going to have to check this game out for myself one of these days.
Anyway, great video... and I hope you will cover more Amiga games in the future now that you've popped your Amiga cherry. :)

Your attention to detail when reviewing a game is beautiful. You should do Unreal World, only someone like you is worthy of taking on such an in-depth game like that.

This game is absolute beast, and it need a modern remaster, with mouse control, some normal buttons for actions (like talk), and mouse controls for fight mode. The design is just amazing.

That game is like music to the eyes. Like how this review oozes passion for obscurity, authenticity and stuff. I just watched a bunch of other youtube vids where everyone is just copying each other and the focus is on reach instead of originality. Needed a review of yours to recalibrate what valuable content looks like.

Who would have thought that in the last days of the Amiga someone would release an impressive CRPG. It looks pretty damn good not only for the time but for the sake of my artistic preferences, not to mention that those orange-ish backgrounds give the impresion that on the sky lies an eternal "sunset" courtesy of the constant storm clouds wich fits perfectly into an advanced society lying in the aftermath of an apocalypse.
    -
I'm gonna try this one, it would be the FIRST game that I play on the old Commodore Amiga systems but since it comes as a recomendation from you, I'm sure I will enjoy it... or at least have something to tell you afterwards XD.
    -
I just hope that the camera can be controled completly with the directional arrows instead of having a butchered control system like the one used for the Eye of the Beholder series... thankfully DOS Box can have the keys remaped but hell... it is still a chore to navigate with controls so damn outdated EVEN FOR THE TIME.

It released last yr and I've heard good things on it and it still gets updates now and then for optimisation. Would like to maybe one day hear ur opinion in a vid. These "temporary bonuses" you talk about are actually characters leveling up certain stats. It is exploitable by moving and kiting all day in a battle. I never did that and never had problems in combat, using all bionicle knights and one mage. One thing i never realized is that you can make it to the end with all characters by switching masks between them, during the dungeon with the gas trap. I ended up beating the game with one hero dead.

And THAT is how you pronounce the name of this game (as opposed to prellion).

Retro, can I recommend Salt Lake Stories, a New Vegas mod for your channel's review www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/63332
It's just such an amazing mod that is done in vain of old Fallout games (It has an actual travel global map and vehicle(s) for it like in Fallout 1 and 2, and partially based on Van Buren), with big world, lots of interesting quests, thick atmosphere and clever references and humour. For me personally it's my favorite "DLC" for any Fallout game, and just like Fallout: Nevada, which is an official Fallout game as far as I am concerned, this mod was left in a relative obscurity.
You already brought spotlight to Nevada that definitely increased people's knowledge about it significantly, so hopefuly you'll consider giving such spot to Salt Lake too .

Yea you messed up reading the name of the game even. It’s Perihelion, not Perelion, pronounced Pe-ree-HEE-lee-on. It’s Greek. It means ‘Around the Sun’.
