I'm so glad they kept the original visuals. Sure I'll probably play through with the new ones first time but at least the original is properly PRESERVED with this option.
The original is better. Both the world, and Lara. No reason for me to use the remaster visuals.
- lighting is better
- Environment is somewhat better. The quick sand doesn't move in the remastered visuals making it harder to spot.
Then just play the originals and save $30

@@zackfair6791 the lighting is awful in the original. Look at the first level. She's meant to be in a cave, yet it is fully lit up like they have light bulbs in the ceiling.

im 35 yrs old, cant believe i played this when i was 10, and never thought id be playing on a ps5 all these years later 😅 these were the real tomb raider games, the new ones dont move a needle for me.
Exactly, original tr games were so lonely in nature and those acrobatic moves are missing in the survivor games
This is basically THE Dream come true, specially with the Unfinished Business, Golden Mask and Lost Artifact additions. Nothing more to ask just to say thanks to whoever came up with this project of the remasters.
Not sure about that statement. The games were pretty poor even at the time of the original releases.
TR1 is exacrly as bad as Diablo1. It just created whole new gaming genre and has milions of fans decades later. Meh... /s

Wow, adding save crystals as a NG+ feature is such a unique and fun way to include it for the console players nostalgia... this is one of THOSE kinds of remasters, like the halo remasters, or the spyro remasters... and the quake 1 and 2 remasters. its done very skillfully and thoughtfully... we NEED more devs like this in the gaming world.

I was in awe when I started playing Tomb Raider 1 yesterday. The amount of effort gone into remastering these games is unbelievable.

Same man! I still remember as a little kid getting tomb raider 1 in those big ass boxes PC games used to come in. Tonight I’m going to feel like that little kid again in the late 90’s/early 00’s booting up tomb raider again and I couldn’t be happier knowing that.

They kept the original voice actors. Now that is worthy of praise. It also plays and looks great. A fine achievement, Aspyr.
I can’t believe we’re here. It’s like full circle your reviews got me into the TR classics. I played them years ago and now I get to experience them again through this faithful remaster.

The kayak part is sth I hate but seeing how it looks I'm actually looking forward to it.
This is as excited as I've been for a gaming release in years. As someone who played the original three games to death back in the 90s, and has them all in their digital incarnations thanks to GOG, I cannot WAIT to dive into these remasters and fall in love all over again.

THIS is the only Tomb Raider Remastered review that matters in my opinion :) A brilliantly produced video to the same high standards as the retrospectives, and also great that it is overall a positive review
those bugs are worrying though
@@armorvil Some of the bugs are based off the game, I've noticed alot of the bad guys in this game are based off the Greatest Hits Version of these games.
I'm so happy that they've included the expansions in these remasters. I've only played TR3's in the 90's because my father was a huge fan of the series and had an original CD with it... But never had the chance of playing the other games' expansions. So having all of them so easily available now is a dream come true
I thought of a fix for the issues with platforming in modern controls.
They should assign a button(if available. I feel this would be best assigned to a bumper or trigger button) to an acrobatic mode, where by holding down the button, Lara will be locked into the tank controls for platforming.
It's kinda a bandaid, but I feel like this would work.
Seeing this trilogy brought to life again gives me hope that the old classics aren't forgotten about just yet. Not entirely related but I'm holding out hope that maybe Soul Reaver might get some love... I played the hell out of Legacy of Kain and Tomb Raider on my Dad's Dreamcast when I was growing up. Not to mention if Last Revelation and Chronicles get remastered I'd be ecstatic, but I heard they weren't very successful so I don't know how likely that is.
DAMN I loved those VCI levels in Chronicles...
Now we just need a The Last Revelation and Chronicles.
We don’t need Chronicles as that literally was made with no passion. So why would anyone even try to remaster it? lol
I only agree with tr4. Chronicles was garbage.
But it would be a part of the trilogy tr4-chronicles-AOD i'd rather see them in a remake but seems cd will try their best again to erase the core lara they may alter too much from the game so I'd rather just see a remaster.
yeah, time to finish remastering all the classics, and also the Times exclusive bonus level for TR4

seriously, did all these devs really not realize that older fans would want such a feature, even as an unlockable? It's probably very easy to program too, it's just a model swap. Heck, I'm sure a cheat engine table or a modder will be able to do it on the pc version.
@@armorvil This. If they can do it in photo mode... Hopefully the PC version is mod friendly.
Thats such a small thing that i dont think was in their vision. Its still the ogs but with a few additions. Who knows maybe they will but maybe thats a fearure they didnt want to include. Tbf it isnt that big of a takeaway imho. @armorvil
if you have the pc version, there is a mod in nexus that does that, you can change the costume in the photo mode, and it changes ingame.
The custome swap is already in photo mode, so it's very doable.
I can't believe how good this looks. I'm very wary of remakes, but I'm absolutely thrilled to see how similar but different everything looks.
Including the specials, with the pc-savegame system, old graphics included, old sounds an music….. this is fückkng awesome!!!
And the inclusion of all the cheats is a nice addition
I had to remember that Tomb Raider 1 on PC had that because I first seen it on Tomb Raider 2.
Nice Steve! Also - the forward crouch roll was something they used in Beta for TR3 but decided not to implement and that's where we have it in TRLE's and head bob is going to go away from Day 1 Patch :3

There's quite a few surprises to come, it seems, and I can't wait to see them!
One of the biggest things was that they clearly used the PC builds to start this remaster with - but realised it was an absolute must for the atmosphere to include the tracks that were only available on console versions in TR1. That alone makes me very happy as I always thought the PC version felt oddly 'silent'. I would assume they didn't get to modify the UB levels likewise to have music triggers, but otherwise it's all good.

let's hope it will happen. TRTLR looks amazing already but with all that light it would be mind blowing. I wouldn't mind a fixed Chronicles either (fixed bugs that is)
Removing the loading screens and making it "open world" like the survivor games would be incredible too, the level design and interconnections in that game is amazing
I prefer tr1-3 over tr4 - it was very dark. However I would want a remaster anyway. And hopefully a playable version of the shit 6th game
This remaster made me jump into these classic Tomb Raider games. Ever since watching your review series I've been interested in them; now seemed like the perfect time. I love them! The creative level design, beautiful worlds and lovely slow paced deliberate platforming is such a breath of fresh air compared to many modern games which can be great in their own ways but this... It's special, somehow. And having never played the originals back in the day, I'm not clouded by nostalgia in any way. The music too, just kicking in at the perfect times whilst most of the times it's just ambient sounds. It all works together so fine.
I must say the updated graphics didn't really excite me that much when the first trailer hit. They looked too "plasticy" and the lightning felt all weird; nevertheless I was delighted that we are finally getting a decent collection of classics with those much elusive expansions to boot. BUT. Seeing all the locales in your review reignited my interest in the remastered version. You included more and it looks better in "raw" gameplay footage than in the cinemtaic trailer version and that makes all the difference. I'm now pumped to see all those things in their HD glory actually! Thank you for the awesome and fair review, Steve! Hope you good people on the internetz getting it early will help the team with those bug fixes. Welcome home, Miss Croft indeed
I was thinking the same! The ingame view certainly looks better than the trailers.
Still, and here you found the absolute right word, I find it rather plasticy and artificial. Something just does not sit right.
My time as a kid playing Tomb Raider 3 on the family computer were some of the earliest gaming memories I’ve had. Despite the hours I spent wandering around the jungles and ruins of India, the furthest I was able to get was the third level. With these remasters I finally had the excuse to not only relive my childhood but to finally finish what I started then. Loved the review as well as your other videos on the series, it’s been years since I’ve delved into this series so deeply but now I remember why I had so much love for it then by returning to it now!

I'm glad I can finally replay Tomb Raider 3 expansion. My old cd version didn't work anymore on modern computers and no fan patches fixed it.
I love the head bobble when they talk, it keeps the nostalgia alive.
Also in tomb raider 3 I noticed they added the roll out of crawl space from chronicles so instead of turning around and holding action to get out of a crawl space , you can roll off the edge

Damn, they put a lot into this, huh? Might actually get this. Switching between controls AND graphics, having a damn photo mode and stuff is pretty neat.
They rly did, and it was bizarre for me to run into UA-cam video and comments calling it a lazy cash grab effort 🤔🙃
I played it last night and was literally in tears. This is a dream come true to me and hopefully, we´ll get remastered versions of the reamining games of the franchise! ❤
Also to add. Noticed that you can’t use the quick use of flairs. Remember on the original that if you press L1+X you could automatically pull out a flare instead of going into the menu to get one. Hopefully they fix that as well or unless they changed the buttons
They have it's select + R1 on ps controllers. So it'll be whatever those translate to on keyboard or switch etc...
Seems like an outstanding remaster!
Over the top wishlist things would be a physical release in a big trapezoid box, some sort of museum or zoo mode where you can see all the character models in the game, a dev commentary mode would be cool too.
too bad for the glitches but hopefully with new platforms we should be able to get patches as you said. thank you for such an honest review! very well done

OG Lara is the best. I knew they were ready to ruin her when she acts like a baby certain times in Legend and in Anniversary.
Lara is level headed and is nor driven by emotion.

Everytime i hear that epic tomb raider music it takes me right back to '96. Pure nostalgia.
Getting it to unlock those save crystals so my 11 year old kid can know the patience I had when I was a kid to play the ps1 version! Although I do remember taking a few “on purpose” swan dives from high places to teach Lara a lesson!!

This review speaks to me as an OG Tomb Raider player more than the others I have seen so far. Definitely picking this up soon after being on the fence for a while. TR 1-3 captured a lot of my play time in the 90s, and I only had a small TV and PS1 to play them on, which means I never got to play the add-on levels. Looks like there is more than enough here to enjoy once more, and maybe I will be able to actually see some of the areas in TR3--so much of that game was dark. I'm sure the mine carts are just as nasty to control.

So so SO happy can't wait for midnight. Haven't been able to replay them for years! Massive nostalgia I grew up with my Lara 💖 massive props for having the option of using the original graphics for maximum nostalgia, I'm honestly attached to the black skybox I missed it in Anniversary
The instant I started the game and the menu came up I got hit with a nostalgia wave so powerful it made me cry. It's great being able to experience these games again as an adult.
This is a great remaster. I never played the first tomb raider so this is my first time. I've played the 2nd and 3rd games many times and love them. The developers from GTA3, Vice city and san andreas can learn a thing or two.

Have thoroughly enjoyed this remaster so far and am currently as far as Temple of Xian.Your review is spot on and i would echo your sentiments.
One thing i have noticed that differs from the original (TR2) is when you enter the cabin where the Seraph is,the haunting little bit of music (which i believe is the same bit of music that's played when you place the Seraph in it's receptacle) doesn't play.I initially thought this was a one-off glitch, but it's not,as it's the same in other playthroughs i have watched.
A minor gripe obviously,but i always felt that was the game's way of saying you have found something truly significant and it is, given that it's the only reason you are ever on the Maria Doria to begin with !
I hope they patch it back in.

Based on what I've seen so far, I love EVERYTHING about this release. The remastered look is brilliant and I can't wait to try it, but also I'm infinitely grateful that they've preserved the original graphics for everyone to enjoy. This is how it should be done. I haven't played it myself, but it really looks like an absolutely amazing tribute to an amazing trilogy of games. Fantastic!
So good to get the classic Lara back baby. Hopefully we get 4 and 5 next.
I think if the upcoming new game just draws from the best of both eras it could be really fantastic. The polished detailed looks and cinematic feel of the newer ones along with the exploration and multi layered puzzles of the old ones. Also show the growth of Lara's character from survivor trilogy and give her that level of confidence and assurance that she was at in the old games.
The exploration has to be more a part of the main storyline. Shadow of the tomb raider is excellent if you commit to playing all the dlc content with the added hidden tombs and puzzles. More of that needs to be 'not optional'.
It feels so surreal playing through these levels again… like a forgotten childhood memory but every so often I’ll remember parts like it was yesterday

I love that you can switch between the old and the new textures at the press of a button, ala Masterchief Collection. I find myself doing that often just to appreciate all the changes in the levels.
And I applaud they went for a remaster instead of a remake. Now we have a definitive way to play the originals without setting up old hardware or downloading compatibility patches. It's all there in one package and it works perfect.
The only disappointing aspect is the lack of TR4. It'd be cool if they released it as a DLC alongside Chronicles, but I doubt it. Maybe a new collection is due to drop at some point, who knows.

First day of this release. I'm loving it. Absolutely wonderful.
Like a lot of people my age, these games mean a lot to me so I was so excited to see them announced but so worried they would mess them up and change too much. This is the perfect collection of my dreams and it’s such a relief seeing all the positive reviews. Looking forward to tonight :)
Cool, it's nice to hear that this is a good remaster. Now I need to reassemble my desktop PC (forgot to put it back together after moving) so I can play this one cos I pre-ordered it on Steam.
Best part for the TR1 remaster I love the most: for the OG PC port back in the day, no more setting your DMA, IRQ and Interrupt settings and hoping you've selected the correct sound card to hear the game.
That was never my problem because at those times I dont think I had anything but a PC speaker ;) beep beep
@HybOj OH boy. Ain't no true nostalgia without PC Speaker nostalgia. I very much feel your pain there. Though if I recall, TR1 needed a sound card for its sound. If no compatible card was detected or non selected, it wouldn't use the PC R2-D2 emulator, youd just have a very quiet experience. I could be wrong there as it's been a very long time since I've played the OG TR1 on PC.
Oh snap, yeah I had a creative card back in the day, and I waa confused for the config so it took some effort to get it to boot. I also ended up buying this on Saturn, but PAL console gaming was horrendous compared to PC

Absolutely love to hear that these titles turned out to be worthwhile versions. It feels like anytime we get a remastered trilogy it's always a huge coin flip over whether or not they'll be amazing or some of the worst versions of the games to exist. Many of the people who worked on this seem to be genuine fans, so I guess they just understood what people might want from this sort of thing.

I really enjoy switching to the old graphics while playing for a few minutes before switching back to the updated. Really good just seeing the old graphics for nestalgia. When you said we've missed you my heart almost broke. It's so true.
