From Wikipedia " The story of The Age of Decadence explores several themes: the dangers of a post-apocalyptic world, the thin line between historical fact and fiction, and the competition among political factions.
According to the Imperial Scrolls, the wicked kingdom of Qantaar and the Empire were locked in a bloody magical war that devastated much of the known world. Each side called upon powers both arcane and divine, summoning gods and other beings of immense power, whose contest ultimately destroyed both sides. Cities of the once glorious Empire lay in ruin, and bodies of the dead were strewn across the land. Centuries later, the world still suffers from the shadow of civilization's collapse. Where there once was unity, there are now factions struggling for dominance in the ruined world. Where there was once knowledge, there is ignorance of both science and magic. Where there was once chivalry and honor, there is only pettiness and betrayal. 18:30 i think only the legion route changes the starting location, but it does so drastically. the town turns from a small village into a military camp.

I played my first RPG when internet didn't even exist. I still play them and The Age Of Decadence was one of the best and TRUE RPG i played in recent years.

Fantastic review, it's so great to think back to all the memories of this game, I had to play it three times to finally realize it's probably the best RPG on PC. You absolutely nailed it when you said it's like a puzzle where it takes multiple playthroughs for you figure things out. I always think of it like "it takes multiple characters to see every part of the game", but it's more than that. It's the multiple sides of the same struggles and factions and whatnot that all come together and paint a larger picture than the sum of the parts.
It's an absolutely fantastic game, and it really shows why it took so many years to make.

Has Age of Decadence changed much over the years? I played it last in like 2016. Have any big updates or changes been made since?
One thing about the combat I wasn't sure how I felt about, was that if you do start a combat, you are basically committed to the battle until it ends(at least as far as I could tell, there's no way to escape the combat scenario once it starts). Still was a great game, and as you said, I should replay it.

I think AoD was kinda doomed to appeal only to a niche within a niche due to how it marries challenging combat with need to replay the game multiple times before you get everything out of it narratively. In an age when even CRPG fans will play the game once before moving to some other release that ended up being a big ask. Complaints on the forums about both of those following release were certainly something.

I've had this game in my backlog for a long time... just need to get around to playing it. Just like so many other games I accumulate but then never play... but I've just been too depressed to do anything. This game came out in 2015? Damn... 6 years gone by like nothing.

Have you tried Dungeon Rats? It is from the same creators and takes place in the same universe, but mostly combat oriented. So, no intrigue and backstabbing, but it has interesting characters and story. Also they are working on Colony Ship. The part that is released now looks like AoD in Space!

Just finished it in this texas snow storm, got the shittiest ending but enjoyed every minute of it. Bought it on steam back in 2014, the laptop i had crashed never got back around to it. One wintery evening, the rolling black out gave me back wifi for an hour. Downloaded the game, and been playing it every time the rolling black out gave me electricity.

Dude, you should really play Arcanum, if you haven't yet. I played the early fallouts, bg's, newer isometric rpgs such as this one, and nothing topped Arcaum. Give it a shoot, since it seems to be up your ally.
volume is a little low but I guess it works as a good ASMR vidya review
lol charisma is always the stat i wanna max out asap mainly because being a smooth talker is more entertaining to me than being a violent brute that smites everything that moves.

I should have added that it ..didn't even cross my mind when I was recording but is probably true ... Its easy to forget about budgets and stuff since I don't look that up or talk about it but it is an indie company so its resources are very limited
It's a rather short RPG, but that only plays to its strengths. It has a lot of replayability and stuff you now know from previous playthroughs can be very important. Also so many secret areas cannot all be accessed on the same playthrough. Love this game.

This is a good rpg. I played as an mercenary first. I was just good at killing people, so I missed up a lot of lore. Did not get access to all those secret areas. Next I played as a loremaster and it added to game so much. Final area is also so atmospheric.

I agree that the volume should be a tad higher. I hate people who shout all the time, but this is the extreme opposite.
