I wanna keep my PC for 10+ years, so a durable high-end board like this or the Hero is my best chance of keeping the mobo alive for as long as possible! My previous ASUS P8Z77 WS, Gigabyte G1.Sniper M3 and Gigabyte mobos all died within 4 years. Hope high-ed boards with quality components can last longer. 🙏🙏
My Threadripper 2950X system died very recently, so time was short to research and buy the right/best parts. MSI and ASRock 870E boards don't appear to be available here, yet, and I didn't feel like parting $1299 for the Asus Hero 870E, so I plumped for the 870E Strix. Only after bought was I able to start researching what I was getting - and it surprised me that when compared to the MSI MEG 870E and ASRock Taichi, the Strix board lacks PCI lanes (my understanding), so additional M.2 drives will start to hijack lanes from the GPU?
Noob question here - With the 2nd and 3rd M2 slots sharing bandwidth with the PCIEX16(g5) which the GPU would connect into, does that mean that if you connect two SSD's into those M2 slots, you will throttle your GPU? My build will utilise x2 2TB SSDs, so if I connect one into M1 and one into M2, GPU will still run at x16?
100% not a noob question - PCIe bifurcation is confusing, lol. According to the official product page, you are correct in assuming that running drives in those slots will drop your GPU lanes to x8. Luckily, gen 5 x8 is still more than enough to get the most out of 95% of current GPUs. I'd personally run my main M.2 in slot 1, and the rest in slots 4 and 5 just in case.
Can’t get 128GB (4x32) to post on the X870 Hero mobo with the latest BIOS 0505. I sure hope Asus gets this fixed faster than they did with the x670 version.
Check the manual, I don't think populating all four slots is supported yet on any X670E/X870E. The max I've seen is 3 x 48GB but that runs in single channel mode. Maybe the best option would be 2 x 48GB and add more in future if supported.
I have an Asus x670E Crosshair Extreme and I haven't seen any other board that looks nicer in my opinion. I would buy an X870E Crosshair Extreme if they made one and it looked like my X670E.
Oof, almost forgot how great that board is - maybe a teensy bit ostentatious for me, but still looks amazing! Let's hope ROG's working on an updated version for current-gen 🤞
Honest question - in what way would you expect it to be better? The x670e exposes the same number of PCIE lanes as the x870e, and the Crosshair Extreme makes pretty good use of them already. You have USB4 (although the controller shares bandwidth with m.2_1), and two PCIE that will run at x16/x0 or x8/x8 (and others) assuming you don't use m.2_2 when they self-nerf. You have a third Gen5 m.2 slot though and another Gen4, so you have options. Is WiFi7 enough of a reason? (And is the WiFI on a swappable pcie card on the x670e?)
Hello, why are only ASUS ROG STRIX X870-E GAMING motherboards with WIFI available on the market? We don't need WiFi with an antenna, and for the ASUS ROG STRIX X870-E GAMING we could do it without an antenna, (because we already have a WiFi USB stick, so we don't need an antenna) and WITH A LOWER PRICE, BECAUSE THIS BOARD IS TOO EXPENSIVE, for us who buy it Asus products and that board should have as many RED USB INPUTS (10) as possible on the REAR with USB 2, GEN2 (with 20 GBps) and not 10 GBps and Type-C THUNDERBOLT could be all four 40GBps, not that two of them are only 20 GBps each. 300 to 350 Euros would be enough for that board, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, because the standard here is low, and new boards with better chips will arrive soon, for socket AM5, so the price of this board will drop soon. Also, the processors for that board are too expensive . I hope that in the near future you will REDUCE the PRICES of items and make such a board as I wrote above (with as many RED USB PORTS as possible, preferably with 20 GBps REAR) ... Best regards
Thank you for the video! I have a couple of questions: Does the M.2_1 slot connect directly to the CPU? Additionally, I plan to use a second M.2 drive for data storage and gaming. Would you recommend connecting it to the M.2_2 slot, which shares bandwidth with the GPU, or should I connect it to slots 4 or 5 instead? I'm using a PCIe 4 Samsung 980 Pro.
Thanks for watching! In your position, I'd use slot 1 for my OS drive, and use slots 4 and 5 for additional storage. As long as you avoid populating slots 2 and 3 you won't risk slowing down your GPU.
@@TheTechTank I need three slots although I prefer 4 because I put a cooling card between the bottom two and use the blade holder in the back to support a second cooler
@@KingBentPinsthe x670 carbon doesn’t share lanes with any m.2 it does share lanes with the second one which they both run @ 8x which is far better than most. And the 4.0 runs at 4x and doesn’t share lanes either. So you can run all nvmes without losing lanes. You can run 16x0x4 or 8/8/4 if you use all three pci lanes
Definitely an acquired art design, but I like it, am going to get one to replace my dark hero motherboard I am gifting to my son and it should last the next several years as I am not going to push it that hard.
Hi, thanks for the review. Looking at this motherboard, and would love to know what the flexkey options are in BIOS? The manual doesn't say. I'm hoping that it can be used as a "safeboot" or a clear cmos button. Do you know?
Hey. The Flexkey button can be set to a couple of different functions in BIOS. I usually leave it on reset, but you can also set it to launch to BIOS, turning lighting on or off, and activating Safe Boot etc.
Sorry for the basic question, but I just want to confirm. Would you see any issue running 1 NVME in slot 1, another in slot 4/5 and a 10gb NIC in the bottom PCIe? Being I live in Japan I have 10gb to my house (about 60$ a month) and dont want to degrade the speed at all by saturating PCIe lanes.
Actually a great question! I had to look it up to make sure. You should have zero issues with the configuration you just mentioned. Even if your NIC does somehow take up more than 4 lanes, you'd still be in the clear.
Haven't gotten my hands on a sealed retail motherboard in a long time, but there should be a sticker holding the box closed... Weird. Where'd you buy it?
Primarily because of the faster transfer speeds. The less time it takes for video files to go from memory card to PC, the more time I have to actually get work done. The higher bandwidth also means getting better performance out of something like a high-speed USB hub. Those are the two biggest ones for me personally.
Can you please test the AI features on the 9800x3d? I'm curious if it's worth getting this motherboard with 9800x3d especially when it's been confirmed Zen 6 will use the AM5 socket so choosing a X870 chipset as it has higher ram speeds available just incase Zen 6 can use faster speeds better.
If I get my hands on the X3D while I still have the board I definitely will! I wouldn't personally pick a board specifically for the memory support if I were you. There's a speed sweet spot for Ryzen where going faster results in some serious diminishing returns...
6000 is the "sweet spot" for current-gen Ryzen. Speeds faster than that, including 8000 is difficult to reach depending on your kit, can be unstable, and unless you know how to tune memory properly, shouldn't result in any huge uplifts in performance.
I have 8000 on mine and it isn't that stable. I have to go through a few different iterations of memory training and tweaking to get it to stay where it's not having issues. I would only recommend it for pure enthusiasts that are used to unstable ram. 6000 is the sweet spot and is the better one recommended for configurations now. Even with the 8000 MHz ram, it's locked to 24 GB per channel because above that isn't stable until they release bios updates so the max you can do in a pair is 48 GB.
Any AM5 motherboard with a chipset on this list: www.amd.com/en/products/processors/chipsets/am5.html. As for which specific board, that's going to depend on your budget, needs, and preferences.
So the first top three slots for the M.2 are your new Gen5 PCIE. M.2-1 is the one under the Ram slots that has the quick release heatsink, this one is a slot with no compromises towards the other PCIE lanes. M.2-2 and M.2-3 will be the ones right under the CPU slot they both share the same Heatsink or right above the PCIE for the GPU. These two M.2-2 and M.2-3 slots are gen 5 and share the same lanes with each other which are controlled by a switch to interchange transfers I believe I can be wrong on this one. M.2-2 and M.2-3 compromise the PCIE 16X cause it also shares the same lanes. So when you populate any of these M.2 with a SSD your board will automatically set the PCIE 16X to run at 8X only no matter the Gen type SSD. The Bottom M.2 -4 and -5 will be your GEN 4 PCIE on the X870e chipset. They do not compromise the other PCIE lanes. So if you have a GEN 5 SSD and a GEN 4 SSD you'll want to use your M.2-1 with Gen5 SSD and M.2-4 with Gen4 SSD or just use the M.2-1 if running a single SSD no matter the Gen you on. Just note that it will run according to the Gen so if you use a Gen4 SSD on Gen5 ready PCIE it will only run at Gen4 speeds. Same if you running a GEN5 SSD on Gen4 PCIE. hope this helps

I have ROG Crosshair VIII Hero, but this looks like crap! I just bought MSI X870e Carbon for the same price as this catfish. It LOOKS WHAT! Harsh, but fair enough. Purely aesthetically the Carbon doesn't do it for me as much personally, but the toolless heatsinks for all of the slots are a big win. The screws on the heatsink I removed in the video are captive - they won't be falling straight into your PSU (which has happened to me a couple of times 😅).

Yeah, unfortunately that's how almost all of the consumer motherboards and chips work. If you need a ton of PCIe lanes you'll have to go with something like the Epyc or Threadripper platforms 😭 To be fair though, depending on your graphics card, 8x PCIe 5.0 lanes will likely still give you full or near-full performance.

Question: What is max no. displays (4K @ 60Hz) which can be connected to this board, to be driven from iGPU using 9900X CPU? I understand this board has 1x HDMI and 2x USB 4 (supporting DP over USB). In principle, each USB 4 port could output to two 4K displays @ 60Hz (using an MST USB-C to dual DP adaptor). So I wonder whether it might be possible to drive FOUR, or even FIVE 4K @ 60Hz displays from the iGPU? (of course, another limitation is max no 4K @ 60Hz displays supported by 9900X iGPU itself, I heard this might be a max of FOUR, but unconfirmed?) I am planning new build using Ryzen 9900X and X870/X870E Mobo. Will not be used for gaming, for productivity only. I won’t install a discrete graphics card, will rely only on integrated graphics.
You actually have me stumped there, I've never really dug into onboard graphics all that much myself. But from what I can see on the board's specs page, it looks like you'll have to dig into the capabilities of the HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4a standards to see what they can handle. The setup you're aiming for sounds really fun though - I hope someone else here can provide some actual input as I'm quite curious myself now 😅

CPU temperature below 40 celcius, PSU consumption below 200W - GPU runs at 40-45 celcius, fans run at 40%. Pilot since 1 week as we got the Made in Vietnam Ultra core leaked few days earlier :)

@@R6ex That's some bad luck, man, I can't remember the last time I had a board die on me (that wasn't directly my fault anyway).
My Threadripper 2950X system died very recently, so time was short to research and buy the right/best parts. MSI and ASRock 870E boards don't appear to be available here, yet, and I didn't feel like parting $1299 for the Asus Hero 870E, so I plumped for the 870E Strix. Only after bought was I able to start researching what I was getting - and it surprised me that when compared to the MSI MEG 870E and ASRock Taichi, the Strix board lacks PCI lanes (my understanding), so additional M.2 drives will start to hijack lanes from the GPU?
you can only use 1 gen 5 m.2 slot .... other 2 are shared ...
Did you check the motherboards QVL List? Always get ram based on this. Otherwise your ram may not work.
We don't need WiFi with an antenna, and for the ASUS ROG STRIX X870-E GAMING we could do it without
an antenna, (because we already have a WiFi USB stick, so we don't need an antenna) and WITH A
LOWER PRICE, BECAUSE THIS BOARD IS TOO EXPENSIVE, for us who buy it Asus products and that board
should have as many RED USB INPUTS (10) as possible on the REAR with USB 2, GEN2 (with 20 GBps) and
not 10 GBps and Type-C THUNDERBOLT could be all four 40GBps, not that two of them are only 20 GBps each.
300 to 350 Euros would be enough for that board, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, because the standard here is low,
and new boards with better chips will arrive soon, for socket AM5, so the price of this board will drop
soon. Also, the processors for that board are too expensive . I hope that in the near future you will
REDUCE the PRICES of items and make such a board as I wrote above (with as many RED USB PORTS as possible,
preferably with 20 GBps REAR)
... Best regards
Anything can be worth it for the right price.
These are not the right price.
Same price as the x670e version at release
It only has two-channel audio output?
Nope. Because of the two jacks instead of the usual 5?
Can't wait to see the 5800X3D of this generation.
Sounds like we won't be waiting long! Haven't heard from my sources yet, but rumors point to as soon as this month 👀
Would it have killed them to throw in another PCIe card slot?
There's a secondary all the way at the bottom, but yes that's a weird choice on their part now that I think about it.
@@TheTechTank I need three slots although I prefer 4 because I put a cooling card between the bottom two and use the blade holder in the back to support a second cooler
Yeah, any board without at least 3 PCIe's is disqualified for me. Right now I'm leaning towards the MSI X870e Carbon.
@@TheTechTank Does the PCIE 5.0 slot share lanes if you populate all the NVME slots? Thats very important i didint hear you cover that.
What a great dad 🥳 The Dark Hero and the new Strix should last you both for many years to come.
That board looks amazing! I wish having 3 usb2.0 headers was the standard moving forward 😅 unfortunately the white strix x870 only has 2 lol
That's probably more the case's issue rather than the motherboards 😂
@@TheTechTank true lol I know that new lian li Edge PSU has 4 usb 2.0 headers on the power supply itself, I think that might be my next upgrade
ON the PSU itself?! Wtf 🤣 oh wow, looks like that's actually a thing, lol. That's going to make things pretty interesting!
@@TheTechTank its a great addition to a psu. Surprised that nobody thought of it earlier.
Why it doesn't have dp but f and a boards have it?
I bought it today and the box was not sealed. I mean it was no sticker where you open it. Is this normal?
Mine arrived today, had a big ASUS sticker on it.
Haven't gotten my hands on a sealed retail motherboard in a long time, but there should be a sticker holding the box closed... Weird. Where'd you buy it?
Can you please explain why USB 4.0 is a big deal for creators and professionals?
I got this and i think it is better than the Asus one! ASRock X870E NOVA WIFI Hovedkort - AMD X870E - AMD AM5 socket - DDR5 RAM - ATX
That's a great board too. Curious though, what makes you think it's better than this one?
I'm guessing due to the lack of lane sharing
Do i need an 870 series chipset to maximize a 9800x3d? Will the 670 work as good?
Nope, the X3D will run perfectly in an X670 board. No performance difference between 870 and 670.
Why the 6000 memory? Is not the board advertized at up to 8000?
6000 is the "sweet spot" for current-gen Ryzen. Speeds faster than that, including 8000 is difficult to reach depending on your kit, can be unstable, and unless you know how to tune memory properly, shouldn't result in any huge uplifts in performance.
I have 8000 on mine and it isn't that stable. I have to go through a few different iterations of memory training and tweaking to get it to stay where it's not having issues. I would only recommend it for pure enthusiasts that are used to unstable ram. 6000 is the sweet spot and is the better one recommended for configurations now. Even with the 8000 MHz ram, it's locked to 24 GB per channel because above that isn't stable until they release bios updates so the max you can do in a pair is 48 GB.
i am going to build it with predator 8400 c40 48GB, and check it it works on X870e-e, don’t forget to select UCLK=MEMCLK2 when you using 8000+ ram
can you use all 4 sata ports & all m.2 ports for drives all at the same time ??
I don't see it listed anywhere, but just doing the math I don't think it would be possible. Not without dropping GPU from x16 to x8.
Sir, all game + editing which processor i take for all this? And also motherboard.
Depends on your budget, friend.
9900X for multi purpose without compromise by being too heavy.
Im a noob to this stuff, what motherboard should i get for my 7800x3d?
Any AM5 motherboard with a chipset on this list: www.amd.com/en/products/processors/chipsets/am5.html. As for which specific board, that's going to depend on your budget, needs, and preferences.
A B650 variant should be perfect for you.
An amazing broad no question about it’s I’ve got this with a 78003dx and just amazing, it’s better then my 58003dx and I can used the full ram 😂
Dream board and chip combo right there 🥳
My X870e-e isn't detecting my 4070 SUPER. Any ideas why?
someone explain the lane sharing set up on this one to me, GPU in the pcie slot, first SSD in m2_1? extra SSD in m2_4?
@@EQUID thank you! I only have one ssd for now and after testing my new compared to my old samsung ones i havent put them in yet, but when i get another new one now i feel more comfortable about what slot to use, thats kind of how I understood it was just hard to find it stated in coherent english online lol, and the crappy table they showed in some manuals complicated it more because they didnt title the rows and columns in a way that made any sense lmao
I appreciate your reply, probably the best and most accurate explanation ive seen
Great info - thanks. I have a 5120x2160 monitor - will the HDMI output from the board drive this without an external GPU?
According to the specs page "supports max. 4K@60Hz" via HDMI or DP. It also somewhat depends on your CPU capabilities. You'll still get a display, you might just need to dial back the resolution a bit.
Nope. At minimum, you'll need something like a GT 1030 card to drive your monitor.
@@R6ex Actually, I bought the motherboard and just finished building a new PC: the onboard HDMI drives 5120x2160 no problem at all.
I am deciding between this board and asrock Taichi lite. Lite because I dont wans shiny plates and rgbs. I plan on putting WD850x 2TB only. 2x16 Gskill 6000mhz ram, 5080 or 5070ti when they cone out along with ryzen 9550x3d when its released. Would you say that asrock would be enough?
Oh absolutely. The new ASRock boards are some of the most overbuilt boards out there right now 😂 It looks like you're going to have an epic system on your hands there.
go with x670e bro...the x870e will take like 6 months to iron out with bios updates..
@@psylencecy Its not a problem. I have never gone to the last gen anything. Even if the x670 is 50 bucks... nah. New chipset or no buy.
what power supply shoud I use for the x870e-e?
Depends on your CPU and GPU, though most of my systems have worked fine with a 750W unit.
coming from a strix b650A gaming mobo and a 7800x3d, do you think these new boards will have any performance gains for 7800x3d chips?
Unfortunately not 😔 Performance between my X670 and this X870 was almost the exact same without any special BIOS settings applied.
@@TheTechTank thanks for the response! I searched all over Reddit trying to see if anyone has done a comparison lol I’ll just wait and see how the new x3d cpus compare to the 7800x3d.. Should I also change the MB from what I have to: ROG STRIX X870E-E GAMING WIFI? I literally don't see any real difference (i compare them on the site) that I NEED to change it but maybe it has something I'm missing that the new CPU can take advantage...
Thank you.
Hey man, nope there's no reason to jump ship from your 670 to the 800-series. You're going to be getting the exact same performance.

I have ROG Crosshair VIII Hero, but this looks like crap! I just bought MSI X870e Carbon for the same price as this catfish. It LOOKS WHAT! ALL M.2's ARE Toolless no screwdriver needed, nor small screws to drop into MB when changing M.2's like on this Strix monstrosity, Get it together ASUS without us having to spend $700 for a good-looking MB like the HERO's, you made me buy elsewhere.
I have been building with ASUS only since 1998.
Have to agree. Reminds me of something Dolly Parton said; 'It costs a lot of money to look this cheap'
expensive asf just to get usb 4 which can be an add on card if you even have a single device capable, theres nothing special besides usb 4 in these new mobo and they cost way more, eh its your money go ahead and waste it

Ok, not all.
And there’s a nice compromise for using 3.
They are asking way too much money for this board. The lighting is too understated here. Looks would be the main reason to go for a x870e board over its predecessor. And this just doesnt do it
At least this is an X870E board unlike the X870-F and X870-A and look at the prices for those....

So, is ASUS trust worthy again? Don't want my MB blowing up on me and ASUS telling me to go stick it
They're about as trustworthy as all of the other board makers, in my experience. Have seen almost all of the board brands embroiled in some sort of controversy over the years.
In conclusion get $300 board that has 90% of what this board has.
Wow! what an awesome motherboard. Asus is the king of motherboard brand. Asus motherboard is worth ever money all the nice design innovations and reliability best performance. You be a sucker to go with other copy cat brand
Actually they are crap
None of the x870 I looked into are worth it. The 40g take up too many lanes. The x670s are better, the msi carbon fiber in particular
Hmm, pretty much all of the 800 series (and 600-series) boards more than cover my PCIe needs.

(of course, another limitation is max no 4K @ 60Hz displays supported by 9900X iGPU itself, I heard this might be a max of FOUR, but unconfirmed?)
I am planning new build using Ryzen 9900X and X870/X870E Mobo.
