Caitlyn Beadle She still kept her end of the bargain. Ariel wanted legs to get on land to be with Eric and she was for a time. Ariel never made rules for it, she never set restrictions. Ursula still kept up her side of the deal.
@Caitlyn Beadle I think what they mean is, as long as Ariel would kiss the man, she would remain human. Nothing more, nothing less. It wasn't a battle or anything, it was just a deal. So interferance and sabotage are not all important. Sure it's all dick moves, but the deal, which is kissing the prince to remain human in 3 days, stayed. Although yeah the hypnotizing was real. But If Ariel were to kiss him without sabotage, since Eric loves her back, the spell would've broke and she will remain human, and that's the deal that was the "end of the bargain." Also, Ariel wasn't her priority. She has it all planned out. she forces to win because if Ariel were to be her pet, Triton would try to save her. thus giving her the... fork thing.

The only really good hero song I can think of off the top of my head is 'Ready As I'll Ever Be', and that's more of a hero-villain duet because the bad guy has his own section and actually starts the song off
I only really knew her as the grandmother in Garfield and Friends - and only much later learned she voiced Ursula. I also found out she was the English voice behind Catherine Stoneheart in Pound Puppies, a show I enjoyed a lot as a kid and would remember loving the character a lot.

Often times in stories like this, young royalty dont have any money on them, because they dont really have a need to. It's taken care of for them. Oh! Like Jasmine, when she meets Aladdin at the market and took that apple for the child (I think that's what happened, it's been a while).

But Ariel already wanted to visit the surface. She probably felt restricted and suffocated because her dad was so strict and wouldnt communicate with them (which made matters worse, because without him telling them why he made the decisions he made he just came across as unreasonably temperamental). Her sisters also felt similar but not nearly as much as Ariel because they were more complacent with how things were and werent as curious/free-spirited as Ariel (so she got in trouble way more frequently than them). If Triton didn't destroy her little collectables and her grotto out of rage, Ariel's infatuation with Eric probably would've just been her first crush and it would've passed. She wouldn't have experienced that last straw that made her want to run away from home. Ursula almost killed an entire boat load of people after tricking Ariel didn't work. Remember, in the movie Ursula almost married Erick. Which would've left Ariel alone on the surface forever with no one else. Ursula is an amazing villain, but not sympathetic.
Today I was confident enough to perform this song during vocal lessons and it was so much fun! I just started taking lessons and it feels good to find songs for the alto register, where I can still act outside of my comfort zone by portraying an evil character and it really helps with my social anxiety as well.
For those who don't understand, the movie is not saying to give up your voice for a man, Ursula is using it because she knows that by giving up her voice, Ariel would be at a disadvantage. But even without her voice her personality was still able to shine through, the handicap wasn't ideal, but Ariel was able to move past the handicap. Without her voice, Ariel wasn't just a pretty face, she was also just lots of fun to be around, and I think that's what drew Eric to her in the end more than anything, even where he was willing to give up the mystery girl he only knew from her voice and breif glimpse of her face. The main reason Eric likely went with Ursula was because he had already had his heart set, and then when that set his mind in one place even when his heart shifted. Also, he was likely under an enchantment, probably the siren's song or something, which may have been what drew him to Ariel in the first place, so maybe meeting Ariel without her voice also allowed him to fall in love with her free from enchantment and just fall in love with her as a living being. So there are actually a lot of layers here, and I don't know if all of them are 100% up to date with our modern sensitivities, but it does provide an interesting story that is worth discussing.
Ursula's one of my favourite villians of all time, mostly cause of Pat Carroll's amazing voice, you could feel the passion she put into her performance. It's tragic that we've recently lost her, but she will always be beloved and remembered for helping bring life to one of the most iconic disney villains
Lyrics for the last part of the song: Beluga sevruga. Come winds of the Caspian Sea. Larengix glaucitis. Et max laryngitis. La voce to me! *Now, SING!*
I rather preferred Ursula's position personally. She may be evil technically speaking but she was always very clear about the details of her dealings. Maybe she didn't give Ariel EVERY SINGLE DETAIL but she didn't FORCE HER into the contract either. I love how just straight up she is. She's an incredible woman who is NOT going to be bullied by anyone not even Triton himself. Though I really doubt that the whole thing would have been even noticed by Triton himself had Ariel not been his own daughter. Had she been anyone else he probably would have ignored it entirely
If you mean you look more like her, that's fine bc she's fabulous. If you're saying you act like her, you need to stop being a bitter, manipulative, prick.
@@angelcarter6387 It's not about her being bullied by Triton. She took advantage of a 16 yr old. Triton's abuse (the scene where he destroys all her stuff as a show of force and authority is a textbook abusive parenting tactic) is what lead Ariel to go to Ursula and Ursula took advantage of that. If you sign a contract saying that you can keep a car if you manage to fix the alternator on it in a week, but the guy you made the deal with is constantly stealing your tools and sending people over to keep you away from the car and ultimately steals the car on the last night to keep you from fixing it, would you call that guy fair? Would you say his way of dealing was okay? Now you owe him the deed to your house bc you never fixed the alternator. Is he "in the right" or is he a crooked prick?
@@angelcarter6387 And even if Ariel DID read the contract, I doubt Ursula mentioned the constant sabotage bc that would be stupid and Ursula isn't stupid.
For the curious: Beluga Sevruga (refers to a caviar found in the very sea she summons next) Come winds of the Caspian Sea. Larynxis (your larynx is your voice box) Glossitis (inflammation of the tongue) Et Max Laryngitus (maximum laryngitus. Laryngitus is an infection of your voice box) La Voche to me (the voice comes to me.) Quite artistic how Disney could come up with such lyrics to sound like a spell, but with meaning, not mumbo-jumbo.
Song from The Little Mermaid URSULA The only way to get what you want is to become a human yourself. ARIEL Can you do that? URSULA My dear, sweet child. That's what I do. It's what I live for. To help unfortunate merfolk like yourself. Poor souls with no one else to turn to. I admit that in the past I've been a nasty They weren't kidding when they called me, well, a witch But you'll find that nowadays I've mended all my ways Repented, seen the light, and made a switch True? Yes And I fortunately know a little magic It's a talent that I always have possessed And here lately, please don't laugh I use it on behalf Of the miserable, lonely, and depressed pathetic Poor unfortunate souls In pain, in need This one longing to be thinner That one wants to get the girl And do I help them? Yes, indeed Those poor unfortunate souls So sad, so true They come flocking to my cauldron Crying, "Spells, Ursula, please!" And I help them! Yes I do Now it's happened once or twice Someone couldn't pay the price And I'm afraid I had to rake 'em 'cross the coals Yes I've had the odd complaint But on the whole I've been a saint To those poor unfortunate souls Have we got a deal? ARIEL If I become human, I'll never be with my father or sisters again. URSULA But you'll have your man, heh heh. Life's full of tough choices, isn't it? Heh heh. Oh, and there is one more thing. We haven't discussed the subject of payment. ARIEL But I don't have- URSULA I'm not asking much, just a token really, a trifle! What I want from you is - your voice. ARIEL But without my voice, how can I- URSULA You'll have your looks, your pretty face. And don't underestimate the importance of body language, ha! The men up there don't like a lot of blabber They think a girl who gossips is a bore! Yes on land it's much preferred for ladies not to say a word And after all dear, what is idle prattle for? Come on, they're not all that impressed with conversation True gentlemen avoid it when they can But they dote and swoon and fawn On a lady who's withdrawn It's she who holds her tongue who get's a man Come on you poor unfortunate soul Go ahead! Make your choice ! I'm a very busy woman and I haven't got all day It won't cost much Just your voice! You poor unfortunate soul It's sad but true If you want to cross the bridge, my sweet You've got the pay the toll Take a gulp and take a breath And go ahead and sign the scroll Flotsam, Jetsam, now I've got her, boys The boss is on a roll This poor unfortunate soul Beluga sevruga Come winds of the Caspian Sea Larengix glaucitis Et max laryngitis La voce to me Now, sing! ARIEL Aah... Keep singing! C Classic Disney Poor Unfortunate Souls Lyrics
2:48 "But they dote and swoon and fawn on a lady who's withdrawn! It's she who holds her tongue who gets a man!" Those are LYRICS. I mean, this is Kids film, they could've written anything! But instead they got Howard Ashman, who wrote these amazing, clever lyrics! I mean, this is better than a lot of contemporary Broadway in my opinion.
When I used to watch it as a kid, I never understood half of the lyrics of this song lmao But realised later how wonderfully thought out the lyrics are like damn this is some good writing!
Was looking for this comment lol. These lyrics are so cryptic and almost disturbing because this is a kids film. But it's the world we live in. And that's the true villain
Ursula FREAKED ME OUT when I was younger, I have no idea what it was about her (among many things) but she was one of the scariest Disney villains to little me
Now reading the lyrics in english I can notice that the LA spanish version of Ursula is meaner. One example 3:21 *"Flotam, Jetsam, now I've got her, boys"* in english and in LA spanish is *"How easy was, how dumb she is"*
It's definitely still true today. The top complaint any guy has with a girl usually aren't her looks, but what she says. "She's cute when she keeps her mouth shut" and such.
Absolutely no cover has ever been close to as amazing as this. She had the best voice in the whole movie. Just like scar in Lion King. Love Disney villains.
When you think about it Ursula held up her end of the deal she said she’d give Ariel legs and she did she gave her very very nice legs and she also didn’t say she would try to stop Ariel kissing Eric and Ariel didn’t even read the contract for crying out loud
If u think about it ariel wasnt that innocent either..ariel knew what she was getting her self into..ariel wanted more than just to be on the surface 😉
She never said that she would try and sabotage her either.......Ariel didn't ask because you AREN'T even supposed to try and sabotage other in the 1st place......she also pressured her into signing the contract (without leaving her much time to read) saying stuff like "i'm a really busy woman", no wonder she couldn't really think and read......
Ursula was and still is the most realistic villain. She was right all along, especially the “on land it’s much preferred for ladies not to say a word” mainly because a lot of men don’t care about personality but more about looks.
Ursula is the only Disney villain(apart from Frollo) who gave me nightmares as I kid, but she was still my favorite. Very sad that she past away recently :(
Why is everyone in this comment section blaming Ariel? She was 16, found her first boyfriend and was desperate to feel like she had control over her life. Ursula attempted to trick a child into going through with a deal that could've possibly killed her out of jealousy and spite for her brother. It's the Disney equivalent of a 35 year old, divorced mom tricking her 17 year old daughter into joining her Multilevel Marketing Pyramid Scheme. Ariel is 100% the victim.
@@aaliyahh2253 If someone made you sign a life contract at 16 you would probably regret it now too! Especially since Ursula attempted to seduce Eric just so Ariel would be stuck for life on land!
Not really. Ursula made an offer to Ariel. She DIDN'T force Ariel to accept that deal however. Ariel was given the chance to sign OR walk away. She CHOSE to go through with the offered deal. Plus I mean seriously think about it. She was 16 and was in love. Other people have done a lot worse and have ended up with nothing to show for themselves. Most of us don't always make the best decisions for ourselves as teenagers anyway.
@@angelcarter6387 exactly why she's a victim! "Here, 16 year old child hopped up on hormones and teenage first love, sign a contract with magic shit you know nothing about!" That sounds like the ot of a horror movie!!!
BetterKilled Studios A deal is a deal. If anything this serves as a reminder to think with your head and not your heart, Ariel wasn’t forced into the contract, she was presented with a choice and she chose poorly. The fault doesn’t lie with Ursula, especially since she was the one who held up her end of the bargain.

Karens. They don't understand the whole point of this line was to showcase Ursulla wasn't just an opportunistic witch. She was a sadistic and manipulative master manipulator who was trying to get Ariel to sign the contract while also mentally hurt her in order to have her lose faith later down the line in getting the kiss, but alas, be unable to break the contract. That, and they think a person shouldn't care about their body at all.
Because woke nonsense. Can’t have any lyrics that trigger sensitive people. Never mind the fact that no little girl is gonna listen to those lyrics and take them seriously when it’s the evil villain who is saying them.
@@Mavuika_Gyaru Dude you agree with me on the song changes being stupid. Are you just looking to start a fight over our political differences? Lol If you want me to tell you how I’m defining it I can. It’s probably not the way you think I am.
I broke up with Disney a long time ago, but goodness, the thing with Disney villains is that despite their devious tactics, they manage to have smart mouths. Their messages couldn’t be half clear… Also, I haven’t understood it until recently, but Ursula manage to foreshadow what she just mentioned: Body Language. Ariel would had to somehow say “Shut up and kiss me” without saying “shut up and kiss me”…
Someone once said that the tune that Ariel is singing when Ursula magically takes [Ariel's] voice, is the backwards version the opening song from "Bambi," 'Love is a Song that Never Ends.' Backwards or not, I can't unhear it.
Ursula: "If you want to cross the bridge, my dear, you've got to pay the toll..." Ariel: "OK, OK, hang on a second. What's a bridge?"

RIP Pat Carroll, A Amazing Actress and Disney Legend that will be Remembered Forever.
Today I was confident enough to perform this song during vocal lessons and it was so much fun! I just started taking lessons and it feels good to find songs for the alto register, where I can still act outside of my comfort zone by portraying an evil character and it really helps with my social anxiety as well.

This part cracks me up big time... "You got your looks, your pretty face... and don't underestimate the importance of... BODY LANGUAGE!!" LOL
Literally and even if she was she’s the VILLAIN like she’s not meant to be a roll model. Still an absolute Queen but yk
Pat Carroll, thank you for giving life to one of the most amazing characters in animation. What an extraordinary voice.
When you wanted to be Ariel then you grow up and realize you’re Ursula
I want to be this good of a businesswoman
For the curious:
Beluga Sevruga (refers to a caviar found in the very sea she summons next)
Come winds of the Caspian Sea.
Larynxis (your larynx is your voice box)
Glossitis (inflammation of the tongue)
Et Max Laryngitus (maximum laryngitus. Laryngitus is an infection of your voice box)
La Voche to me (the voice comes to me.)
Quite artistic how Disney could come up with such lyrics to sound like a spell, but with meaning, not mumbo-jumbo.
The way she says BODY LANGUAGE will always be hilarious. You know she was having fun in the studio with that

Song from The Little Mermaid
URSULA
The only way to get what you want is to become a human yourself.
ARIEL
Can you do that?
URSULA
My dear, sweet child. That's what I do. It's what I live for.
To help unfortunate merfolk like yourself.
Poor souls with no one else to turn to.
I admit that in the past I've been a nasty
They weren't kidding when they called me, well, a witch
But you'll find that nowadays
I've mended all my ways
Repented, seen the light, and made a switch
True? Yes
And I fortunately know a little magic
It's a talent that I always have possessed
And here lately, please don't laugh
I use it on behalf
Of the miserable, lonely, and depressed pathetic
Poor unfortunate souls
In pain, in need
This one longing to be thinner
That one wants to get the girl
And do I help them?
Yes, indeed
Those poor unfortunate souls
So sad, so true
They come flocking to my cauldron
Crying, "Spells, Ursula, please!"
And I help them!
Yes I do
Now it's happened once or twice
Someone couldn't pay the price
And I'm afraid I had to rake 'em 'cross the coals
Yes I've had the odd complaint
But on the whole I've been a saint
To those poor unfortunate souls
Have we got a deal?
ARIEL
If I become human, I'll never be with my father or sisters again.
URSULA
But you'll have your man, heh heh. Life's full of tough choices, isn't it? Heh heh.
Oh, and there is one more thing.
We haven't discussed the subject of payment.
ARIEL
But I don't have-
URSULA
I'm not asking much, just a token really, a trifle!
What I want from you is - your voice.
ARIEL
But without my voice, how can I-
URSULA
You'll have your looks, your pretty face.
And don't underestimate the importance of body language, ha!
The men up there don't like a lot of blabber
They think a girl who gossips is a bore!
Yes on land it's much preferred for ladies not to say a word
And after all dear, what is idle prattle for?
Come on, they're not all that impressed with conversation
True gentlemen avoid it when they can
But they dote and swoon and fawn
On a lady who's withdrawn
It's she who holds her tongue who get's a man
Come on you poor unfortunate soul
Go ahead!
Make your choice !
I'm a very busy woman and I haven't got all day
It won't cost much
Just your voice!
You poor unfortunate soul
It's sad but true
If you want to cross the bridge, my sweet
You've got the pay the toll
Take a gulp and take a breath
And go ahead and sign the scroll
Flotsam, Jetsam, now I've got her, boys
The boss is on a roll
This poor unfortunate soul
Beluga sevruga
Come winds of the Caspian Sea
Larengix glaucitis
Et max laryngitis

Now, sing!

I love this song! My favourite bit is when Ursula cackles evilly. Her laugh is unbeatable!!

"But they dote and swoon and fawn on a lady who's withdrawn! It's she who holds her tongue who gets a man!"
Those are LYRICS. I mean, this is Kids film, they could've written anything! But instead they got Howard Ashman, who wrote these amazing, clever lyrics! I mean, this is better than a lot of contemporary Broadway in my opinion.
When I used to watch it as a kid, I never understood half of the lyrics of this song lmao
But realised later how wonderfully thought out the lyrics are like damn this is some good writing!

Jeez, that part about men preferring submissive women is interesting. Not necessarily true, but definitely in Ariel's time

Exactly
She never said that she would try and sabotage her either.......Ariel didn't ask because you AREN'T even supposed to try and sabotage other in the 1st place......she also pressured her into signing the contract (without leaving her much time to read) saying stuff like "i'm a really busy woman", no wonder she couldn't really think and read......

Ursula was and still is the most realistic villain. She was right all along, especially the “on land it’s much preferred for ladies not to say a word” mainly because a lot of men don’t care about personality but more about looks.

Ariel aint no victim..ariel had a choice..ursula didnt pressure her..she had a choice not her fault she didn't read the contract..ariel was rebelious

@@moonamoonz Let me guess? you're a woke cry baby. It's obviously offensive because she's the bad guy, thats what villains do, give wrong advice, kill, lie, set a bad example, so children learn a lesson that if you misbehave you gotta pay for that

Karens. They don't understand the whole point of this line was to showcase Ursulla wasn't just an opportunistic witch.
