Hey guys. So I have a betta in a 10 gallon tank and the filters I have for it are too strong. I have a tetra pf-10 and a penguin 100. I’ve already tried to slow them down with a pre-filter sponge but it didn’t work. Are there any filters you would recommend or anyways I could slow the filters down??

My betta definitely needs to be in a not-empty tank! Looking at how she explores and interacts with the plants in her tank it seems it would be cruel to keep her in an empty tank; she's a curious little critter, and when she's resting it's always in a sheltered place, either under or behind some foliage. It's not just something she likes; it's something she NEEDS to be a happy fish.
And I want a happy fish.

My spoiled betta is in a 20 long, heavily planted tank. I have caught him wedging himself into the rotala, camping out on top of the sword plant, passes out in the java fern, he even took a nap on top of the mag-float. He avoids the drift wood and rocks in the tank but he does like to lounge a lot. On super rare occasions he gets on top of the floating plants for a nap. He's a cutie!

    • @vg7985

Yeah, I noticed same with my beta. He puts his fins and tail on leaves and lounges between few plants. He looks so spoiled and lazy. Sometimes he freezes in strange position between plants. Few times I thought he's dead, but he was just sleeping. In general, my all tropical fish love natural plants. I really see how plants are bringing playful nature even in fish. Beta also likes floating leaves - he makes bubble nest around, and then sits under waiting for girlfriend to show up. I feel so bad for him as she is not coming. Lol.

This channel convinced me into buying a Betta around 7 months ago. He has been thriving thanks to your videos help, and has become my favorite fish.
A few betta toys, and some live plants - he is like a puppy, exploring his tank. He has the biggest personality and I spend hours just watching him explore through the plants, even sometimes rip the snails of the walls when he is in a "mood" - hahaha he is honestly a puppy in a a tank and I love him so much.

My my betta looooooovvvvvesss to just chill on the plants! So I'd say plants that they can lay on are a MUST! He thinks he is a tough guy so he doesn't hide from anything, he just flares out his gills/fins if there is something of a "threat" nearby. He considers my bird to be his number 1 enemy in the world, so whenever he sees him even simply sitting on my shoulder (and I'm near his tank), he flares out his angry gills like crazy. Bettas are the best and deserve to be kept WELL, so decoration are a must 😅

I have catappa leaves in all my tanks and also have the fritz dark water. I wish the dark water was in a 16oz bottle. I have learned a lot from you Lisa about keeping females together. My betta plays with the floating red root plants. He will get the zoomies and dart between the stalks of my anacharis. Bettas do greet you every morning, he swims to the same corner and eats pellets. When cleaning or adjusting stuff in the tank, he will follow my hand and swim between my fingers and is like "wassup?"

    Awesome video!
I recently got a female koi plakat Betta at the local big box pet store; I had NO intention of getting another Betta, but she looked so pale and washed out.
She has absolutely blossomed, and has the best feisty little personality!
From cup life to a 20 gallon tank with some of my homegrown corydoras and 2 mystery snails.
Lots of live plants, her favorite being the floating water wisteria.
I am so sold on the often overlooked short-finned female Bettas!

A note about those floating logs...I had one of my bettas get pinned between the log and the aquarium glass side, because it got caught under the filter flow. In just a second, my poor Berry was dead. Please try to tie them to something or adhere them to something so they don't 'smack' your fish dead.

Hello. I originally bought a Betta Hammocks and he never touched it. I stopped into the same pet store and the Fish Expert showed me these larger than Nana Anubias on a Suction-Cup. I placed 2 of them in the one corner and before long, he was resting on it. Joy.
Who else loves my Anubias Leaves and Amazon Sword Leaves, besides my Betta are the young Brown Bristlenose Plecos. They just love lounging on the leaves. The next time passing bye, they change positions. It is so adorable.
I break up the large Catappa Leaves... this just happened... just noticed the Catappa leaf moving. I figured that it must be the Nerite Snails, who also love the Catappa Leaves. The Bronze Cory Cats started to get closer. All of a sudden, the Catappa Leaf popped up into the air... the Bronze Cory Cats jumped up out of its way and there was one of the young Brown Bristlenose Plecos sitting there saying... here I am. I just started laughing. I guess Fish can play, too. :-)
I try to place one of the pieces of Catappa Leaves between the glass and the plants because the Betta likes squeezing in next to it.
And, yes... Taylor is very inquisitive. When I clean the tank. I do subtle rearranging to give him new places to look into... sorta like tunnels between the Plants, Rocks, and Driftwood.
You are so right, it doesn't take much to make them happy and to have fun.
    Thanks. Great video.

Years ago I had a betta in a large vase with marbles on the bottom (I didn’t know anything about fish). One day when I was at the pet store buying food I bought a plant on a whim and put it in the vase. The fish was much more active after that so I knew it liked the plant. I had no clue about what fish needed and I had no business taking care of the poor fish. Now that I know better I want to get a larger, filtered, heated tank with plenty of hiding spots and plants for a new betta to atone for my sins.

The betta in that tank ended up dying soon after - it was an older betta that I had re-homed from Kijiji, so I can't draw a direct causal line, but I can tell you the rest of my bamboo came out of my tanks! 😕
I would be willing to try it again some time, but if so, I'd want to rig something up so that only an inch or two of the bamboo is under water, and I'd want to keep a much closer eye on it.

I just set up my bettas 10 gallon tank. The temperature is exactly 79 degrees. But my bedroom is always really warm. And I feel like a heater might make the water to warm? Or maybe the temperature will stay constant...

  • @sststr

I recently set up a 6 gallon tank for a betta. A piece of driftwood the length of the tank with some anubias attached to it, two java ferns, a plastic cave, a hard plastic tree root which comes up to just below the surface so it creates a flat circular space at the top of the tank that he loves to rest on, a hammock on the side that he uses occasionally, and a floating betta log directly under the filter to break up the flow of the water coming out of the filter, and the betta loves to go inside it despite its use as a breaker.
I also noticed he loves to rest on the heater, which is vertical and given the size of the heater and its location in the tank, it has to be vertical, so I took an old small 10 watt heater that could be put in horizontally about an inch below the surface and he absolutely LOVES to rest on that.
I also tossed in a couple of ramshorns which have infested my shrimp tank after being brought in on some plants. Since they are multiplying like crazy in the shrimp tank, I'm none too worried if the water parameters in the betta tank aren't great for them (the lower pH in particular), if they die prematurely then no problem, I have an unlimited supply to replenish them. For as long as they last, they are useful as a cleanup crew, and to give the tank a slight bit of extra activity. I'm hoping when the baby snails are born, they will make for a tasty treat for my betta. But given how ridiculously peaceful this little guy is, I'm not sure he will eat them. I've had him now for 2.5 weeks and I can't get to him to flare at anything no matter what I try. He's so completely chill, he's probably going to leave the baby snails alone. He's certainly leaving the adult snails alone. Sometimes he stares intently at them, but never actually bothers them.

There are many easy plants. I have Cryptocorynes and they always grow, even with low light und without fertilizer. Limnophila Sessiliflora and Hygrophila Polysperma are also very easy and grow quiet fast, but I think unfortunately they are banned in the USA. In Germany we like to keep them in our tanks. The only thing they need is a bit of iron fertilizer.

Veil Tail is the heaviest fin Betta that I would consider. Any heavier than that is utterly inhumane & unacceptable to me. Same w/ the Dragon Scale Betta that's doomed to blindness. 😢

I used to have a very happy Betta. I put him in a 5 gal. and he was pretty active. I think I didn't do enough water changes, though, because one day I found him on the ground, panting. He wasn't able to swim, and a few days later he died. I am resolved to not getting any more bettas, because I don't want any more to die.

@KGTropicals (had to repost due to some typos & wanted to add more information!)
Lisa, you would be so upset with my local fish store; I had to save 3 baby female Betta fish (can't have been more than a few months old) from a slightly larger female Betta fish killing them all as they were all placed in the same tank with not much decoration (a single plant in the centre). All the babies had torn fins and even had one of their front fin completely torn off :'( they were all trying to hide but as soon as the larger one was anywhere near them she just went for them :( so I called over a member of staff and told them. At first they were a bit ... Stand off-ish but after witnessing it themselves they agreed to separate them.
Thankfully I stayed and saw that he at least moved the bigger one and I'm hoping the babies are going to be ok.
They were stunning blue/purple/white coloured Dumbo rosetail Bettas 😓

I have seen a lot of controversy and confusion over water temeratures, and whether or not we actually NEED a heater. Can we get a "For Dummies" on water temps from your point of view?

I remove my beta heater for summer and put it back for fall and winter. The moment the heater is back in the tank my beta starts his bubble nest. I noticed that my beta is more active and more happy in the warmer water. However I I give some break between non stop nest blowing between seasons. I still keep water safe temperatures, just 5 degrees lower.

Hi Lisa! Because you are the Betta expert I would like to ask you for the most appropriate filter for a betta tank who lives now in a 5 gal (but eventually he will be into a 10 gal with some mates) , there are so many opinions out there that is really confusing. At this moment I'm using the TopFin Top Fin Silenstream Power Filter at the lowest flow.
