@@Bro-kt2uo i have a male and female betta in my 40 gallon community tank and they are super peaceful so honestly it depends on the specific betta because i have another male that has to be by himself because he is so territorial/aggressive. and having lots of plants helps a ton!
My pets mart just took all their glow fish bettas and made a sorority out of them so more people look at them and buy them it made me happy watching them all swim around they legit looked happy
@@CookieCrafter475 they need to ban selling fish imo. As much as I love them, but they suffer and die so much in stores or by owners that don't take care of them very well. It's so sad and cruel :/ I got my 1st betta ever in a wedding in 2010, cause they were table decorations, so at the time I didn't know anything about bettas, so he only lived for 3 months in his 1 gallon tank. It was actually my parents betta, but they had him in my bedroom. We only changed his water once every 2 weeks... Now that I know more about fish keeping, I feel so bad about that fishy 🥺
I rescued a Betta 2 weeks ago from the store where they were kept in tiny cups , filthy water and some were already dead. This one, I named Peaches, was looking up at me so I could not leave her behind. Your channel has been so vital in the care I intend to give. XO
I did the same thing, His name is Neptune! I impulsively bought him with a 5 gallon tank when I was going to the pet store to get cat toys. I didn't buy him until I was educated enough to get a basic 5 gal set up. :) Hes my happy boi. I'm gonna upgrade him to a 10 gal tank at some point in the year.
i had the same experience, i rescued 4 female bettas and 3 were eggbound and didnt make it thru the night. one was sooo beautiful too bright pink with baby blue. the surviving one is just red but what she lacks in color she makes up for in personality! shes super friendly and loves to interact too
@@betsybenson6417 Thanks. He used to be all peach colored, but as he has gotten older he is changing. People at pond shop told me as Betta's age. color will change.
Our Betta lived 5 yrs and was in a little tiny fish bowl until the last few months of his life. I since discovered it was a miracle he lived so long, i have since learned from you all on the best conditions for Bettas. All three of our Bettas now are in 5-10 gals with plants and some tank mates ... thank you for all your knowledge and love for these fish!
Wow it's really strange it lived that long in a bowl. Mine lived for an year and a half and died because of my absence. Good job. Bigger is sometimes better
same honestly, mine only lived about two and a half years. We live in a cold part of the world and it blows my mind how coincidentially his tank was in the warmest room in the house where the temperature almost never dipped below 70 even if it was in the negatives outside, and could get as warm as 80 in the summer months
I took so much care putting together the most ideal betta tank I could! 15 gallon cube. A fluval 107 filter, but turned way down so there wasn't too much current. A TON of plants, including water lettuce, and anubias plants with big leaves near the surface to rest on. Driftwood that I sanded carefully so nothing would tear his fins. Slate with no sharp edges. Caves for hiding in, lots of safe hiding spots, Indian almond leaves, temp set to 80... I pre-cycled by running the cannister in an existing mature tank for 3 weeks, which shortened the nitrogen cycle in the new tank to a single week! Aaaaaaand I made a major mistake by adding two honey gourami to my main tank when I already had one established adult. Established adult wasn't having it, and I was scared the juveniles would die of stress or get beat up, so now I have a 15 gallon cube with a single honey gourami in it. Heh! Planning to get some kuhlli loaches for the tank, and then I have to decide if I want to keep the honey gourami in it (he is a prior commitment, after all) and set up a 10 gallon I recently got for a betta, or see if time outside of his old territory while the other two gourami grow up will lead to a better balance, or war. At any rate, I think we should all do our best to make the lives of any beings under our care as happy, healthy, and full of enrichment as possible.
My family bought a betta in California many years ago. We named him Panchovilla... he survived 105 degree water on a move to Arizona when the moving van's ac broke. Then our cats knocked over his bowl TWICE! Overnight he survived. Man he was a trooper. We all loved him dearly. He finally grew old and succumbed to dropsy. We buried him in a mini knitted sweater in a jewelry box for his coffin. RIP Panchovilla, you will be missed.
I'm getting myself a betta this Christmas and I'm really happy I found your videos, everyone else I checked out were either short videos, were uninformative or completely wrong- yet you guys have legit information, multiple videos AND very healthy looking fish..... I've never had a fish before but with your videos I feel confident that I'll have it for at least a year or two, thank you for the videos
Bettas are antidepressants for people. I love mine that I got from you Lisa! He is without a doubt the best fish I have! Thank you for all you do to help Bettas to thrive!
I was inspired to rescue a young, white Half Moon, after I saw your guy. My guy's fins are jagged and torn possibly due to a rock I had in his 10 gallon tank. I moved him into a 5 gallon, and he seems much happier and more relaxed. I am hoping his fins get better.
@@InFideScientiam bro we all make mistakes. They did the right thing when they realised it. Downgrading tank not the best thing but getting rid of the rock, yeh
@@InFideScientiamyou probably do constantly but you just refuse to accept responsibility, I’ve made mistakes before but that’s why I micromanage my tanks and nothing goes wrong very often now, I did and still do lots of research and I genuinely believe there will never be a point where I’ll know it all.
I miss my Earl! He was my first betta(we had a couple growing up but Earl was the first that I bought for myself). I had him for almost 6 years. Started out in a bowl.. then a 1.7 gal tank where he stayed for the remainder of his life. He sure was tough cause I didn't have a heater for most of his life. I got one when he was like 4, and he was so happy! One day I came home and it was like 105°F that day.. his water temp had spiked to like 99°F and he looked crazy, like he was cooking in there! His eyes were popping out and he was sideways and just looked at me like, "HELP!".. I panicked and unplugged the heater.. totally thought he was gonna die but he pulled through and went back to normal. Had him for a couple more years after that. He survived the ups and down of me learning about fish and his needs. All the time he was my little buddy who was always happy to see me, and I him❤ miss that guy. I've learned a lot since my first betta! Lol
lifespan also can be altered by the source of the fish. chain stores like petco/smart who keep bettas in poor conditions, those fish likely wont live as long as a healthily bred one. even if you do put one in perfect conditions, the origin most likely effect the lifespan
Petco that I go to is great with their Betta's. They do have some Betta's in cup's, but they have a high turn around rate. They also keep Betta's in about 6 of the community tank's as well. The PetSmart's in my area are a different story.
im glad your petco had good bettas,,, the one I got my betta from had multiple dead and decaying bettas, and the one I adopted was in a phase of near death starvation :/
This is very true. Our first Betta was from a local pet shop. The tanks never looked that clean, Bettas were in with other, nippy fish and often other Betta (usually just the females, but tanks were small and the females were covered in stress stripes) etc. We used to go in to get other pet bits. One day I sent my son to look at the fish while I got bits. He fell in love with a male Betta. We'd never had fish and I didn't want to get a full set up and then a month later, he's not interested, so we left it. We had a holiday booked and I knew nothing about fish, definitely nothing about Betta. We kept popping back and he kept looking at that one fish, he even named it. That's when I knew, if he didn't get sold he would be coming home with us at some point. I did loads of research. Got a 10 gallon tank with a heater, filter, live plants, some with big leaves, so he could rest on them as I'd read Bettas liked that. He also had a floating log thing. I started cycling the tank. A couple of months later, the tank was finally ready and we went to pick him up. He was a veiltail, but his poor fins were a raggedy mess. It was 6 months since my son had first seen him and fallen in love. He was a full grown when we first saw him, not young and we'd not been in there and looked at the fish before that first time we saw him, so he coukd potentially have been in those cramped, less than ideal conditions, with nippy tank mates for over a year for all I know. He was a goid sized male when we got him and hadn't grown since the first time we saw him, so my guess was he was a minimum of 9 months old when we got him, but he could have been a lot older than that. He loved his new home, which he shared with a couple of nerite snails. Sadly we only had him a year and a half before he passed away. His fins started growing back shortly after he moved in with us, partially because of the regular water changes and partly because of the Indian Almond Leaves I put in the tank with him. I think unfortunately, his life before he came to us limited how long we would get to enjoy his company. I also very much doubt they were that bothered about good genetics either, so that may have been a factor too.
You do realize that they live in muddy shallow pools of water? The worst thing you can do is clean your tank too much. Oh and get a few snails to help clean the poo.
I give mine 4 pellets daily and skip one day a week SOME times I'll give them like 3 vibrates right before bed time xD but not every day. I love when everyones like oh I use the spoon and just give them a spoonful of food a day >_< it makes me cringe!
I had a terrifying scare with my Betta. I did my water change for his 10 gallon tank as usual, but a couple days later I noticed that his fins were ragged. And it was getting worse. I used my test kit and discovered to my horror that there was 3ppm ammonia in there! Turns out my city water has ammonia now when it never did before... My poor boy lost half his tail to ammonia burns from this fiasco. Thank heavens I caught it in time to save him and his snails. His tail has just started to visibly grow back today.
Thanks for the excellent info as always! I never knew bettas were so intelligent and interactive until I got Martok a year ago. I love my little wet buddy and have spent at least 10 times his purchase price in live plants and a 10 gallon upgrade. Not to mention all of his fancy little shrimp roommates! I am lucky, he has been a very good tank mate for my shrimpies and watching them scurry around seems to provide some enrichment for him. He is target trained and gets hand fed, no wasted food. He enjoys gentle pats and head boops as well. I doubt if I will ever dare to have another betta in that tank when Martok is gone, I don’t want all my shrimpies to get slaughtered 😱
Her attitude is a turn off. The point would’ve been made perfectly fine without her horrible nasty attitude. We’re here to LEARN about this fantastic way of life, not be made to feel like idiots and be near verbally abused. She could’ve even used the same words with less attitude and been ok. I sure would hate to be in her circle. Imagine how she treats ppl she knows if she’s this nasty to strangers…JS
I treat them very good but they don't live a long life. My bettas lived few months until almost 2 years. In nature a Betta live 1 or 2 years but in captivity he can live more than 3 years but it's not the average. Lisa don't speak about genetics and breeding who can short sometime the life of fishs (example Guppies who can live 5 years in 1960's).
Some pet stores even tell you they dont need heaters :(. At petsmart i word vomited "yes they do, theyre tropical fish!!" when I heard an employee telling customers they were the fish to buy if they didnt want to buy a heater. He honestly looked relieved that I turned the people off and proceeded to tell me its corporate policy to do that. Petco's website says they only need 1/4 of a gallon!!! I boycotted these places even though its made shopping for my various pets a pain, its worth it because theyre corporate monsters! I love your videos guys, so bummed I couldnt/can't make any of the aquashellas this year. Hopefully next year!
I had a betta back in 2018. First kept him in a one-gallon tank I cleaned every few days until his 10-gal was done developing. I do regret keeping him in that, and I don't know exactly what caused it, but he got dropsy a year later. Did research on treating it, bought different medications to help fight treat it (didn't do all at once, and I know some can be used together, but I was nervous to use them altogether). This time, I took time to make sure I had a proper setup. Blackwater, live plants, shelters to hide away (rock cave with leaves covering it, plants sitting in front, tree roots with leaves dangling over it as a little canopy), planted light, heated to 78°-82°, away from windows and excess light, clean once a week at the latest, and the tank was sat up in an area with low human traffic. I also don't have to worry about mass chlorine/heavy metal dumps into my water supply. I'm running on well water, and it's done me well. Still treat it since it doesn't hurt anything, and the treatment I use (Fritz A.C.C.R) helps keep potiental ammonia spikes from happening. I gave that tank a while to develop, and checked to see if my local fish shop could hold the betta I wanted (absolutely adorable little guy. He's extremely nice, and never flared up at people in the store, and still hasn't here). Galaxy Koi Betta, bright blue body with orange, red, and white fins.
I had number 6 almost happen, one of my ten gallons started leaking through the bottom seal. Luckily, I was there to catch it and had a back up three gallon for my betta to stay in til I got a replacement. Thank you guys so much for what you do, you're the ones that really got me back in hobby!
After years of experience I don't test my water, I look at my tank and keep the maintenance up to a good standard. I have neon tetras as well, they lose color or will go to the top half of the tank if something isn't right. I try to make problems not happen Insted of dealing with a problem. I use garlic and good food to stop white spot and other things like fungus. I haven't had white spot or anything for years. I use snails and coli loaches to eat leftover food and keep my water good, if a fish dies in the night it will have been eaten by the morning so no ammonia spike.
I love how serious you are taking this. Finally someone that is trying to understand these little misunderstood little friends. I used to sell them and stopped. The sells are very fast but at what cost. I now own 3 females and males from my betta lines and never will sell them again. People get to be a little unresponsible and they are not the ones paying tbe price. The main killer for bettas if not understanding them. I breed my bettas on natural environment. I do not know much about the best filters, heaters etc. But I know with a little bit of effort you can make your betta happy.
Randal my Betta has a whole 10 Gal to himself carbon filter and small flow air pump...nice dark water wit Tanum but clear and basically my point is he Lives better than I do
Out of all the bettas I've kept, the biggest killer was diseases. My local chain fish store wasn't quarantining fish and I found out later from someone who used to work there that they had bettas dying every day because the 30 or so betta boxes all shared water and so every fish would come in healthy and pick up a disease from the shared sump water. I now treat every single fish I buy with antifungals and antibiotics as soon as I get them home. Solved the issue.
They're great jumpers and can fit through really tiny gaps. We lost one of ours from her jumping out of the tank through the tiny gap where the airline and heater cable was. I couldn't see her anywhere in the tank, looked all over the tank, beside the tank, then spotted her behind it. I thought she was dead, but she wasn't, but was in a bad way. I tried medication and daily water changes and she improved a lot, but was never quite the same. A few months later she was gone :-( I'm pretty sure it just weakened her too much :-( I hadn't been near the tank for a couple of hours, so I have no clue how long she'd been out of the tank, but even if it was only 10 minutes, it won't have done her good. If you think your Betta can't possibly fit through a gap, block it anyway, just to be safe.
so far mines 2 yrs old and still going strong , as a matter of fact i gotta change his water tomorrow, i took out his fake plants and saw alot of either decaying food or fish poop on the bottom , i have a very small 1/2 gallon bowl he stays in while i do maintence on my betas 3 gallon tank , i live in gov apt and not allowed to have a bigger tank , id prefer a big community tank with lots of fish , but im ok with my beta, my fish loves his flakes and dried red worms do you think i should change him to beta pellets ?
For those with Dwarf or other smaller Gouramis, those in my experience are EXTREMELY similar to Bettas, though some of them like the Honey Gourami are somewhat shy without lots of floating plants (which I cannot seem to keep because my filter outflow shoves them under constantly…)
So did I miss what temperature the tank should be? My Betta heater only gets the tank up to 74 degrees. He’s in a 3 gal tank. My last one lived 2.5 years in this tank with this heater and was about 2 years when I got him where he didn’t have a heater. When I do the water changes every 2-3 weeks, I do replace it with warmer water about 80degrees and reintroduce him to it. It take about 3-4 days for the water to return to 74 degrees. In a 3 gal tank can he have a tank mate? Or is the tank too small?
I got a beta for Christmas, a very beautiful blue one, named him Finn , I had him for maybe a year and he developed a swim bladder issue where he couldn’t swim down anymore, we looked up how to help him and treated him with natural laxatives as instructed, it was a rollercoaster and his condition went up and down until one day he just gave up, he stopped eating. My first ever fish who I loved the most essentially committed suicide, I was so sad and scarred, I stuck to keeping khuli loaches since then, both the ones I got are still alive, Larry and louie. I’ll never forget Finn though
Don't keep them with guppies. The baby guppies nipped at his fins. I seen it to late. He was not happy. Now I struggle to get him healthy. I gonna get rid of all the guppies. I have him in his own tank now.
@@taniamans2026 I have that same issue, the guppies nipped at my betta's and i just had to euthanize him today, saw the fin rot too late and i couldn't get my 5 gal tank cycled in time. I'm new to fish keeping but my next batch of fish i'm getting in my 10 gallon will be neon tetras and otto's. I'm new to fish keeping so i guess now i know, that these guppies are too feisty with bettas R.I.P Comet. :(
It's been 25 years since I've owned any fish at all, and it's because my Betta's kept dying, and I was told if I couldn't keep that alive, I had no hope with other fish. Right now I have a Fluval Flex 8 gallon and am keeping an eye out for a Betta, and some itty bitty appropriate tank mates. The difference this time, is that I did my research... and still am. I won't lie, I'm paranoid despite all the precautions, but this is one of very few hobbies I've liked the idea of since I ended up in a wheelchair. - A reason I'm sticking to small tanks. I'm going to try, so far I spent 2 months deciding on which tank, and am now carefully deciding on what and who goes IN this tank. Wish me luck!
I'm going to be a first time Betta owner. Just like any animal I wasn't about to impulsively buy. I've got everything down just watching the video to make sure I got everything. I'm waiting to get a Butterfly Betta unfortunately the one I wanted is gone but I am sure they'll get more. I just hope the one I wanted wasn't impulsively bought it was beautiful.
I immediately warmed up my Betta fishes water and he already looks a whole lot more happy and I am getting a new tank for him and a heater as soon as possible and thank you for the advice! Also this is my first Betta fish! I got him from my cousin and he wasn't taking good care of him but now I have him and I wanna give him the best life that I possibly can!
I got my first Betta this week, my husband bought him for as a surprise as I've been really stressed with hospital appointments. He's a gorgeous a fish named Max and I'm so scared I'm going to do something wrong to hurt him. We have 2 tropical aquariums plus a third tank cycling and I'm buying Max a bigger tank Monday and I'm stressing over plants and whether to have tank mates.
Hi! I'm a seasoned fish keeper from Malaysia and I love Bettas. I have 5 low tech planted community tanks and all of them hold a Betta. However, in the last 2 years since I have started keeping Bettas I have lost my 8 Bettas all to Dropsy disease to a point now it's too depressing to keep a Betta anymore. All my other community fishes such as Tetras and Corys are all fine. What is your view on Dropsy and how to deal with it as the online research I've done doesn't give a cure as it is a genetic related disease...
Ive had my beta for around 5 months now. Its a 30 gal community tank and so far hes doing really good. Just wanted to see what to avoid or what im doing good
Love the Sassiness of your approach!!! All my Ladies are doing GREAT!!! and the boys too... Thanks to the great care they received before I got them! They are one of my favorite aquarium pets in the hobby! Sharing this video for others to learn a few lessons!!! Thank you!!!
I have this beta that somehow survived longer then our others Neptune and Viel also Jupiter who was 5 years old and that my friend gave me. Sadly, they all died… Jupiter died when I wasn’t home and I found the other two dead in there separate tanks… I never put my betas together. This video was amazingly helpful Lisa! I also hate to see beta fish in little cups that never have their water changed… It’s so cruel!
My first betta lived for about two and a half years. Looking back, I think the reason that was possible was due to pure coincidence that the tank was in MY room, which was also the warmest room in the house. I am still sad to know that I didn't give my little buddy the life he fully deserved, but I do feel a bit better thinking about how the entire time he was alive he was a very happy healthy little fish given the fact that he was living in South Dakota
I’m hoping your comment is sarcastic. I found the info amazing but the attitude…well, this is my first and last time with her. Get loads of great info from other UA-camrs without the hatefulness. Even for noobs like me. Kindness, doesn’t cost a dime. Goes a LONG way.
My baby Sebastian, who's about 3 years old by now, lives in 10 gallon tank. The only water I use is filtered. He also have plans with big leaves he can lay on and hiding spots. And a heater. He's healthy, happy, chill, spoiled and very handsome 😊
I kept a koi beta and he lived for 5.5 years. I had him in a nicely heated tank with white sand. It had slimy algae but he seems preferring it. Since he colored up more in that tank. I thought the algae is rather working with the nitrates. Even though there was regular water changes, I kept the slimy algae..
@@Just_Lurking8 Yes it was green slimy algae.. but I don't think it harmed my crown tail betta.. He even became father of almost 150 babies twice. But then I kept him away from the female.
I love my Bettas! I keep them in 5 to 10 gallon tanks. Lots of plants and wood. I feed them 1 to 2 times a day 6 days then fast on 1 day. I use extreme Betta pellets! You are my hero...love hearing your knowledge on Betta fish!
I have a Betta in a one gallon tank but this wasn't the tank I originally chosen as when I first got him he had a 10gallon tank but he was refusing to eat and he wouldn't move from the corner of the tank he would just sit their so all of his food would just collect at the bottom making the water dirty way to fast so I was forced to put him in a 1 gallon because I thought he made of been sick so the one gallon was just so I could treat him but ended up finding out that my little better was much more happier in it's 1 gallon as as soon I stuck him in the one gallon the next day he started playing, swimming and eating so I decided to stick him back into the 10 gallon he ended up not wanting to eat swim nor play so I had to put him back in the small tank to get him active and get him to eat. I found out that while their are tons of Bettas happier in big tanks their are also some Bettas who are happier in small tanks I think it all depends on their personalities I hate his small tank but I realize it's not what I like but what my little fella likes. I know some people will hate on me because of it but they won't understand until they end up with a Betta in my situation he been living in his 1 gallon for almost 8 years this is his 7th year living in this tank.
Betta fish are amazing and intelligent and interactive with their owner and look beautiful in planted aquarium and I love them and they build bubble Nest which I like it ❤️❤️❤️I personally think that Betta fish should be kept in 15 gallon aquarium with live plants
Just cycling my betta tank. 15 gallons, live plants, smooth rock formation for him to investigate, betta hammock for him to rest on. 😊 hopefully he will be happy x
Another point I think is important, mainly because I didn't consider it when it came up, is to consider where your decorations are in relation to each other and the sides of the tank. I made the mistake of putting my sponge filter too close to the glass of the tank after a water change and the result was devastating. Please, please check these things.
Great point! I always check my sponge filter and my HOB intake sponge. Can’t put them too close together, or too close to the glass. I used filter floss to plug up any decorations that had any remotely fish-sized openings. Including the cholla wood
I got betta as gift for Xmas & 2.5 ga. Koller tank with filter and bought small heater and thermometer (temp 78). Tank sitting on desk in kitchen not near window and gets plenty of fresh light. Water was crystal clear. He hides behind filter and rarely swims around. 1 week later, changed 25% of water. Added conditioner. Water been cloudy ever since. Also treated with API quick start. Not over feeding with Betta Bio-gold pellets (3 pellets 1 x day). Betta still not swimming around much and doesn’t seem to be eating despite I turn off pump while feeding. I’ve watched all your videos but still not seeing where you explain how to clean murky water or what caused this and how to fix it?? Please advice?
Thank you Lisa. My male betta has an eye injury from me putting in a new rock in the corner that I forgot to tell him about. Otherwise he's doing well in his 10 gal planted tank. But I didn't know they like dark water! When he heals, I'll get a catalpa leaf for him. He has some Cardinal tetras as his mates that he gets along with just fine and a nerite snail for humor that he loves to bonk on the head. And I LOVE your sense of humor!
I Get The " Rock Works Under Construction Signs Out " And Place These Around The Aquarium. Also Lowering The Speed Limit During Construction Works . ( Having Advised The Police Department And The Hospital / Veterinary ) There Hasn't Been Any Major Issues .
I worked out that my local fish store didn't quarantine fish and every single fish I got from them had fin rot. I now treat all fish with malachite green when I get them and haven't had an issue since.
Bettas def need clean water. No chlorine at all. I have a filter on my house and still used the de chlorinator and had one die. So now i buy spring water from the stores and never had a problem again.
My beta fish was 8 months old when we got him, we had him for for months so far, and 3 other fish live with him so I do feed more then normal he live in a 29 gallon tank made for beta fish he's name is red no he's not red he's pinkish and blue He lives with 2 Neon Tetris And a Pepper catfish He knows to tricks Right now :)
I keep mine in a just a large goldfish bowl with live bamboo and drift wood for tanins. They typically live 3-5 years and spit out a nest all the time.
I was just watching John at fishy bizz live stream. I was confused which John I'll watch but as soon as I knew it's Lisa I made my mind, John can wait till Lisa is finished 🤣🤣.
Not just Betas, but all fish. Please use a muffler on your air supply to remove the humm from your pump. Put your ear on the tank and you'll know why. They have to live with it with no way out. So all you need is a small pop bottle and put the air through it bfore the tank.
The love and respect I have for you guys ❤️ I’m going through a though life curveball. I went into a local pet store and saw a really light blue sad sad looking betta. He was $50 and I had zero supplies. But I couldn’t walk out without my Vinnie Louise. He’s a bit sad at the moment but I’ve figured out why. All thanks to you and your videos. Off I go to get Vinnie Louise some more plants, a better heater and maybe a catfish friend ❤️
@Madeleine Canning - putting cat fish in with bettas is a great idea, but catfish like being around other catfish, so you should have 4-6 catfish and not Just one, or your one catfish will be stressed and lonely.
I have my half moon male betta in a 1.5 gal self cleaning tank. There are no instructions how to maintain it. So far, Big Bad John, has been doing fine in it. How do I maintain it? I add tap water conditioned to the bottom tank. What else should I do?
I had my male beta in a 2 1/2 gallon tank (because I was always told they just need a very small space). After watching your videos.. my beta is now in a 10 gallon aquarium. Figuring out what friends to give him. He's a bit aggressive and killed a corey, but maybe because he was in a small tank. Thanks for all your knowledge and help.
I decided to move my 3 ember tetras from my community tank in with my beta. They were totally lost in the bigger tank. In the 10 with the beta they seem to be doing well. He is ignoring them because they're so small... and they're fast enough to evade him if he decides to go after them.
If your betta is living it up in a 10 gallon, might I suggest a few shrimp or snails if you want to provide "roommates"? Ramshorn snails are decent for algae cleanup and don't spawn lots of babies in the tank (they lay their eggs above the waterline, so you can scoop them out if you don't want more), plus they come in several beautiful colours. Shrimp have a roughly 50/50 chance of surviving with your Betta since like most carnivorous fish they might try snacking on the smaller/weaker shrimp, but it all depends on your fish's temperment and how many hiding spots the shrimp have to escape predation. It's entirely possible they might get along!
@@thejasminedragonmerchant6843 Thank you! I actually put 6 ember tetra in the tank and they are doing well. I just ordered snails which are coming today. I was wondering about shrimp. I may try that. Thank you!
I have three female and one male Betta living harmoniously in a 37 gallon aquarium. I have it filled with aquarium plants that are live and a couple of fake colorful ornamental plants and a floating log. They seem to be happy. One of them was very aggressive when I first got her so I kept her in a smaller tank for a week and then I re-introduced her to the pack and she was fine after that. I probably do overfeed them, so I will need to watch that, I do keep the water warm and I monitor the nitrogen levels constantly and I did not know about the dark water although the tank that I have does have a blue light which I use during the early evening hours.
I age my water, keep my Bettas in community tanks with live plants, and I change at least 20% of tank water more than once a week. My big fear is power outages, any unknown water contaminants, and loss of a regular maintenance routine caused by being away from the aquarium for extended periods.
Recently I noticed my live plants are dying on my tank causing ammonia spike - I quickly safe the lil guy but he hasn't the same since - he barely eats if any (he isn't a bit picky from day 1) and have been hiding in his little "cave" all day What do you recommend I do? Should I provide darkness so he feels more secure? It just broke my heart to see him like this, he was timid since day 1 but was so happy to have plants (yet I might have a poor job ordering it, it wilted and decomposed over the weekend while I am out) PS I live in Indonesia but we are indoors so I do a little heat adjustment (hoping it helps) and order some artemia eggs as I struggling with live feed and worried if I use decapsuled artemia, he won't respond (still on delivery) - I try siphoning leftover food every other day or three as I did offer a bit of yolk and it's bare bottom
For me, bettas can easily die from eating too many dry pellets. They become bloated and quickly die from constipation. Feed only 3 to 4 tiny pellets at most per day.
I never use tap water when refilling a tank lol I always go and buy gallons of spring water. Even I can taste the chlorine in my tap water so not exposing my fish to that lol
Yeah, Lisa was saying grab a heater for your per betta if your country or your area is colder than on a tropical countries. Yeah here in the Philippines it's warm and humid but half of the year it's raining most of the time so if you put your fish outside aside from Goldfish, they will become stressed of how cold it is unlike when they are inside the house which stays warm almost all the time.

My pets mart just took all their glow fish bettas and made a sorority out of them so more people look at them and buy them it made me happy watching them all swim around they legit looked happy
It is illegal in uk fish stores are required by law to give stocked fish a reasonable living space
My local petco is keeping the females in sororities too 👍

I got my 1st betta ever in a wedding in 2010, cause they were table decorations, so at the time I didn't know anything about bettas, so he only lived for 3 months in his 1 gallon tank. It was actually my parents betta, but they had him in my bedroom. We only changed his water once every 2 weeks...
Now that I know more about fish keeping, I feel so bad about that fishy 🥺
Why hasn’t this happened yet. We need to protest about this
I rescued a Betta 2 weeks ago from the store where they were kept in tiny cups , filthy water and some were already dead.
I'm gonna upgrade him to a 10 gal tank at some point in the year.
i had the same experience, i rescued 4 female bettas and 3 were eggbound and didnt make it thru the night. one was sooo beautiful too bright pink with baby blue. the surviving one is just red but what she lacks in color she makes up for in personality! shes super friendly and loves to interact too
Peaches is a cute name 🙂

@@luckymuddypawdidn’t you buy a tank heater?
@@NEnigma777 nope, my bedroom is directly above the furnace room though
Dropsy is from overfeeding
@@choski76 Dropsy is a sign of a bacterial infection
Im surprised bettas are hardy but surcum to bad conditions like yknow a bowl it can make them sick and cause dropsy which is a infection

Sounds like the Betta should be rescued from you!

My aunt had a betta in a 1.5 gallon bowl. He lived for NINE years, and had a great personality.
I love your straight forward way of educating, Lisa…“ don’t be lazy, don’t be stupid” should be a catchphrase for all fish keepers!
You're ABSOLUTELY right! I purchased 3 different Bettas in a week because they kept dying.
I will take care of my Premium butterfly male betta with these tips he's never going to DIE

My oldest betta just turned 5, so she is definitely right! If you treat them good they'll live a long life
I treat them very good but they don't live a long life.
My daughter was 12 when she got her first Betta. He was an adult at least a year and a half old she rescued. He lived for 5 years.
GOOD FOR YOU--IF THAT IS POLICY THEN IS MY POLICY TO YELL OUT THE CORRECT ANSWER TO CUSTOMERS😡
I always use API strips! Never failed me yet since using it.

Thanks Lisa for your hard work....❤🇺🇸
I had a betta back in 2018.
Thank you guys so much for what you do, you're the ones that really got me back in hobby!
great job!!
Great video. Love all the plants too! I'm a plant hobbyist myself with around 200 plants & now getting into fish. Running out of space!
so far mines 2 yrs old and still going strong , as a matter of fact i gotta change his water tomorrow, i took out his fake plants and saw alot of either decaying food or fish poop on the bottom , i have a very small 1/2 gallon bowl he stays in while i do maintence on my betas 3 gallon tank , i live in gov apt and not allowed to have a bigger tank , id prefer a big community tank with lots of fish , but im ok with my beta, my fish loves his flakes and dried red worms do you think i should change him to beta pellets ?
Or is the tank too small?
lisa does so well just by herself
I got a beta for Christmas, a very beautiful blue one, named him Finn , I had him for maybe a year and he developed a swim bladder issue where he couldn’t swim down anymore, we looked up how to help him and treated him with natural laxatives as instructed, it was a rollercoaster and his condition went up and down until one day he just gave up, he stopped eating. My first ever fish who I loved the most essentially committed suicide, I was so sad and scarred, I stuck to keeping khuli loaches since then, both the ones I got are still alive, Larry and louie. I’ll never forget Finn though

My first betta lived for about two and a half years. Looking back, I think the reason that was possible was due to pure coincidence that the tank was in MY room, which was also the warmest room in the house.
Betta fish are amazing and intelligent and interactive with
their owner and look beautiful in planted aquarium and I love them and they build bubble Nest which I like it ❤️❤️❤️I personally think that Betta fish should be kept in 15 gallon aquarium with live plants
Just cycling my betta tank. 15 gallons, live plants, smooth rock formation for him to investigate, betta hammock for him to rest on. 😊 hopefully he will be happy x
@@snapdragon2441 😊
You also can take your water to your local fish store and they usaully test your samples for free!
Another point I think is important, mainly because I didn't consider it when it came up, is to consider where your decorations are in relation to each other and the sides of the tank. I made the mistake of putting my sponge filter too close to the glass of the tank after a water change and the result was devastating. Please, please check these things.
Thanks for the tip and sharing 🙂
I'm pretty new to fish keeping, can I just ask what kind of problem putting the filter next to the gass will cause?
Great point! I always check my sponge filter and my HOB intake sponge. Can’t put them too close together, or too close to the glass. I used filter floss to plug up any decorations that had any remotely fish-sized openings. Including the cholla wood
@@nooreenmannan4738 Bettas breathe thru a labyrinth, so they have to go to the top to breathe. If they get stuck somewhere, they will drown.
new betta owners here. Thank you so much for valuable info and given in an enjoyable way.
Great video. I wish all people would see this and follow it. Bettas are so mistreated. I have 3 and they do great.
@@boboften9952 😂👏
Don't wait! Those leaves have healing prperties & other benefits Hurry.
@@vblackwell3347 Thanks. He's all healed now but I plan to get one when next I go to the fish store for blood worms. His favorite!
I worked out that my local fish store didn't quarantine fish and every single fish I got from them had fin rot. I now treat all fish with malachite green when I get them and haven't had an issue since.
Just bought a betta girl from your site, I’ve got a cycled planted aquarium waiting for her. Perfect timing for this video!
Awesome 😊 you're gonna love her!
Bettas def need clean water. No chlorine at all. I have a filter on my house and still used the de chlorinator and had one die. So now i buy spring water from the stores and never had a problem again.
Those are some really nice specimens, I'm mainly a plakat fan, but its open if the coloration is striking.
I also discovered the importance of having the lid when my cat scared my beta and made him jump out of the fish tank, luckily I was able to save him
Thanks!
Thank you 😊
I am getting a betta and I am busy selecting the best stuff for my Betta fish!
🤣🤣🤣🤣John hates waiting!!! I told him Lisa is #1 and he's #2---
@@FishyBizzAquatics not my problem, John's problem 🤣. No one can compete with Lisa even John.
#girls stick together 😁
Lol Thanks for watching me first 😊
@@realmadridfan9416 🤣🤣 cute!
Dried almond leaves it really does help the fish to relax and the guava leaves work too
Love the pupper sitting on the chair
@Madeleine Canning - putting cat fish in with bettas is a great idea, but catfish like being around other catfish, so you should have 4-6 catfish and not Just one, or your one catfish will be stressed and lonely.
and make sure to cycle your tank
I have my half moon male betta in a 1.5 gal
self cleaning tank.
Thank you!
Beautiful betta fish
Recently I noticed my live plants are dying on my tank causing ammonia spike - I quickly safe the lil guy but he hasn't the same since - he barely eats if any (he isn't a bit picky from day 1) and have been hiding in his little "cave" all day
What do you recommend I do? Should I provide darkness so he feels more secure? It just broke my heart to see him like this, he was timid since day 1 but was so happy to have plants (yet I might have a poor job ordering it, it wilted and decomposed over the weekend while I am out)
PS I live in Indonesia but we are indoors so I do a little heat adjustment (hoping it helps) and order some artemia eggs as I struggling with live feed and worried if I use decapsuled artemia, he won't respond (still on delivery) - I try siphoning leftover food every other day or three as I did offer a bit of yolk and it's bare bottom
Super cute shirt!
Lisa your makeup looks great💚👀
For me, bettas can easily die from eating too many dry pellets. They become bloated and quickly die from constipation. Feed only 3 to 4 tiny pellets at most per day.
Hey Lisa from South Carolina. Nice vid, good info...Thanks...Love the dog..
Thank you so much 😊
Awwwwe that little yawn the betta at 17:30 did was so cute
I love your plants! Crush says "hi!" BTW, shrimp are great betta buddies. They love the entertaining shrimp antics.
I never use tap water when refilling a tank lol I always go and buy gallons of spring water. Even I can taste the chlorine in my tap water so not exposing my fish to that lol
Love that shirt!
Great video! I have my Betta with Platties, swordtails, bushy nose plecos in a 65 planted tank.
Oh WOW I wish I could see that beauty!! That's my goal , with a couple houseplants rooted at the top. What a lucky Betta!!
