Your betta has shark eyes
Please can you make a video about flowerhorn fish care
Im still a rookie, Is it ok to do water changes when cycling a tank? I've heard not to do that because you remove ammonia and slow down the build up of bennificial bacteria. Therefore never completing th cycling process. I've been waiting for my ammonia and nitrites to drop to 0ppm before doing a water change.
Can you add a link for the piece of wood I cant find it anywhere
I love hornwort and duckweed in my fish tanks. Would never use fake plants.
I'm a 21 year old man. I still talk to my fish like they're babies. Pets are hard to talk to normally.
I wave at them and hope they know I love them :,)
haha very funny.
I watch them and let them get a good look at me so when they see my face they associate my face with feeding time, they also get super exited when I go past
I know this is an old comment but I’m almost 30 and still forget I’m not 19. Anyway, yeah my fish are my babies too idgaf if it’s manly or not. I’m 6’2” 220lbs. I don’t really look feminine with a betta fish anyway 😂😂
If they talk back , your water might be radioactive 😂 Let me know if you have a breeding pair of talking fish !! $$$
I didn't know there even could be a girly vs manly tank . Anyone making fun of a guy for having a fish is an idiot. Thanks for making me laugh and keeping up with the videos! We all need this right now and I really appreciate you guys
Nice comment, I was going to say the same thing @brunette3cookie. I love the video John! I just agree with this comment very much. I don’t understand the difference between a “manly vs girly” tank. I think it’s all just a preference...
I don't get it, either. It's a box of water with plants, wood, substrate, and fish in it. How do you make that manly or womanly? It's like saying a hiking trail or a lake is manly or womanly. It's just nature. One of the beauties of nature is that all humans can enjoy it and are built to enjoy it regardless of gender. Why try to shoehorn stereotypes into one of the few things in our lives that don't have any?
brunette3cookie you are a good person i was thinki the same thing
Anyone ridiculing anyone for any kind of a hobby or passion for something useful, fun, healthy, beautiful and educative, is an idiot and not even worthy calling human
True my same sentiment it doesn’t make a lick of sense. I’ve been watching Beta UA-cam videos not long but most of the recommendations I get are men who are keeping betas and other fish… so I haven’t noticed any female influencers in the field yet xD.
My Betta fish grew a beard after watching this manly tutorial video!!!

I saw this comment, laughed VERY loudly, went to like it, and saw that I already had the last time I watched this video.
I might have forgotten it existed, but it made me react twice, apparently. Thank you - I definitely needed the laugh 😅

Bottom line, if you are worried about people picking on your fish tank: they have the problem, not you.
ANegativeAtheist - the only real reason to pick on someone’s fish tank is if they don’t know what they’re doing....
You also have a problem if you are worried about how others see you
True but I wil pick on dum atheists ☠️

As a fish (betta) obsessed girl, I got into the sport because my Dad always ALWAYS kept tanks. How could people think it is a feminine hobby?!? That doesn't even make sense! I literally look for a fellow fish lover in potential romantic interests XD

John - this is a mainly betta video
Also john - it's a cute little bottle
Gorgeous betta, just saw the clip of him. Also ignore the haters, we know you're having fun and helping people get into aquariums. Hope you guys are safe. Keep doing what you're doing 😉❤
As a former active duty marine, I'll take my current (and future) tanks over any other pet. I'm also an avid angler, and I love watching these beautiful little creatures acting more natural as much as I want as opposed to seeing them on the end of my line getting ready to head to the deep fryer.
Me: *hoping this isn’t a way to shame girls for liking feminine things
John: Men are lazy
Me: 😶😏
But it’s kinda true in the way that most women like super bright not natural colors in their tank and men usually like a natural one ( all but most )
Just saw the first 40 seconds and I already liked the video, that's what I was looking for.
Thanks for the inspiring video. After watching this video, I went to Petsmart and purchased a male Rose Petal Betta. He is Royal blue with bright yellow fins. When setting up his new home, I used what I had on hand at home. I set up a 10 gallon tank with a heater, pea gravel from Lowe’s, some fake plants I already had and driftwood. For filtration I used a Top Fin Silent Stream 40 HOB filter. That filter is a bit big for a 10 gallon tank but the flow can be adjusted . I’ve turned it to the lowest setting. There is very little flow and the betta likes that. I keep the heat set to around 80 degrees. My new Betta (I haven’t decided on a name yet) is very active and loves his new home. I also keep 6 feeder goldfish rescues in a 75 gallon aquarium. I started with 2 feeders about six months ago and they are now about 4 inches in length. Last month I rescued 3 more feeders. After being quarantined for a month, they are now enjoying their new 75 gallon home. Thanks again to you and your wife for all the great videos. I learn something new each time I watch you guys.
That’s a perfect, natural, manly tank set up. The substrate, plants and wood look great! I used fake plants all the time .
Everything for bettas seem to be small... sadly that includes the specifically betta “tanks”
Alissa Cambel no need for “tanks” they are still tanks but to small unless it is a jar or a vase
Joboy Manubag I know but for me anything under a gallon does not count as a real tank.
I just saw a tiny little cube that was “for betas” at PetSmart and this thing was .25 gal!!!!!! I was mortified!!! The girl that was working in the fish dept. said that they continue to sell them because people still buy them!!!😫 It was actually SMALLER than the cup that they live in at the store!!! 😒
Man up and put live plants in there. just bc you cant grow them doesnt make it hard
I also have a betta tank on my desk, next to my bed. She is a gorgeous lava Red halfmoon and I named her Empress. I absolutely love her and she is my little baby.
Funny enough, my ex friend (male) actually teased me (female) for having fish tanks because he thought of it as a manly hobby 😂😂 Because men go fishing, build tanks, build stands, etc so he found it weird for me, a girl, to build my own tank, build my stand, have natural stuff inside like driftwood, live plants and rocks. He considered it manly because “Women don’t like getting their hands dirty” 😅 no longer friends with him after that. Plus he had a 1gal tank with no heater for his betta with no hides, blue gravel, fake neon plants and has a pirate ship that was way too big for the tank so it took up half of it. He also said that cycling didn’t matter (it very much does). Another reason I’m not friends with him anymore.
I think the tank looks nice. Scott is gorgeous! I have fake plants in two of my tanks - my Oscar tank and my Goldfish tank. All the others have live plants. They make some really nice looking fake plants now. I've used that internal filter before and it is quiet. I look forward to seeing what Lisa does.
Love the "manly" tank. I like these types of set ups. I do think live plants are more beneficial to maintaining a healthy ecosystem for fish, but I understand your reasoning for the silk options. I have used silk and still recommend them to people who are unable for whatever reason to make the jump to live. I love Scott 😍💗💗 (the fish not the man, idk him)! He seems very interactive. I can't wait to see your updates on him and Lisa's video for a "girly" tank next week.
I have a human skull in my betta tank. Is that manly enough?
I had one of those in my tank in high school because it looked cool. Right now I'm planning an all things goth tank with a dino skull replica, a Texas holey rock 3D background, black lava rock, driftwood, bucephalandra (all the darkest ones), black angel fish, black platties, black guppies, and a white sand substrate with kuhli loaches or some other black bottom feeder that tickles my fancy (maybe a school of black corys). Does this sound masculine or feminine? Lol.
Only if its a real one and your betta killed it himself.
No you need the whole skeleton
My betta tank is made of human skulls exclusively.
No . . . Unless there is still a human eyeball floating in the socket. Other wise . . . . Shame . . . Shame . . . Shame. 🙃😆
Very manly. Scott is a great betta. I also like silk plants. Easy to maintain. For algae control I like a nice sized moss or algae ball. Great job.
awesome video and i appreciate you making lots of vids while i'm stuck at home . cool manly tank and little betta ,also i thought it was cool that you left a space right beside the tank for your purse to sit. ..................
My husband has been watching me with my two little betta tanks and says...thanks dude😂✌️😁👍❤️ now it's his turn...... I have a question though.... If you use botanicals, such as Leaf litter, how often does it need to be changed out or does it just eventually deteriorate?
Leaf deteriorates like you thought, while its in the process of deteriorating it releases tannins and grows beneficial stuff on the surface of the leaves for shrimp etc. Also tell your husband I say good luck and welcome to the hobby, hope he meets some new fish nerd friends to geek out with.
@@FAKE-NAME thanks and he is pretty excited😁.. stay safe and well ♥️🙏

@@sojolly I don't think so, Tim.
Nice video, coincidentally I started a Betta tank in January. Found a nice used Tetra half moon 10 gallon tank that came with led light heater and filter. First thing was paint the back black added a couple of white stones and a ceramic tower my Daughter brought back from Thailand a few years ago, planted the tank and waited a week for cycling. The little heater works great and keeps the tank at a steady 75-82, I decided not to use the little filter as I had an older Eheim 2213 laying around, plenty of power for this little tank and filter cleaning every 4 months now :).
First occupants were a trio of Platies an Apple snail for the glass and a Trumpet snail for the substrate. Big Al's had a sale on Neon Tetras - 10 Neons were perfect for the 10 gallon, a few days later I spotted a nice male Red Crowntail Betta. With his red exterior and blue undertones he fits right in with the Neons, Being livebearers I might have to rethink having the Platies - sure I could feed them to the Cichlids in the 75 - maybe I'll just keep the males....
Manly or not my Grand Daughters loves the little fish in the little tank as well as the big fish in the big tank
Every male Betta should at the very least, have a man cave! You did it!!!
Never been this early before I’m ready for the manly tank haha
You named your betta after Scott of King and Queen Cichlids. Your betta is adorable. Love the fact you did a manly betta tank love the videos.
Someone was to my friend like "Fish aren't manly." the next day he got a betta tank, decorated it with all pinks and purple and showed the same person a photo of it llater saying: "I think it's manly." The tank still stands and it's honestly too funny lol
Fish are stereotyped as manly with fishing and being gross.
Great video! Love the tank scape. I have multi betta syndrome lol
Just got my first blue with red fins King betta last week had no idea what I was missing with these magnificent bettas. I must have more of them now lol
I've never even thought of a masculine or feminine fish tank, but I do bond with some fish. (Shout out to Allen and Steve, my two fav cory cats!) Thanks for bringing up this topic. We can always talk about a fish or a water parameter, but we don't often discuss the emotional and social issues of fish keeping. I'm glad to say that if I saw any man with any fish tank on his desk, I would have thought it was cool and never would have thought to question his manhood. I get that some people feel differently.
I have a55g that I’m slowly stocking. I have fancy guppies and orange laser Cory cats in there now, with ember tetra’s quarantined in a20g before I add them to the 55g. My ultimate goal is getting 6-7 female bettas. My LFS raises his female bettas in the same tank, which I think is a plus for peaceful living. My tank is heavily planted, has rock caves, driftwood, and plenty of hiding places. I have a 15g with a divider that’s cycling now, also heavily planted, has driftwood caves, and will be the home of 2 male bettas and some otocinclus. I think my tank looks masculine because how does a tank look feminine with rocks, driftwood and jungle plants and 2 boy bettas?! Setting up the tank was fun. Now the hard part - picking 2 bettas. My LFS has a very sophisticated system for his bettas which includes filtration and heat for each betta - and they don’t live in little cups. Consequently, he has the most gorgeous bettas in the most gorgeous colors, and they are extremely active. So different from Petsmart and Petco. I can’t wait until the beta tank is finished cycling!
I just use prime in my betta tank.
As you should

21:48 I just started crying 😭 betta cuteness destroys me sometimes
My main tank is planted, with a hardscape of natural rock and driftwood. I can't see how it *isn't* manly! It's a handsome tank and the fish are very happy with it too.
Cute idea for video topic! I noticed plastic plants in first tank but I’ve always read that plastic has sharp edges that can tear beta fins.

A few months ago my mom took me and my brother to petco to get him a new betta fish. We went in the store and I saw a literaly my dream betta fish which coincidentally was a king beta. My mom saw how much I wanted the fish and bought it for me. Then I got home and set up a tank which so happened to be on my desk. One of the reasons I wanted it was becaues it was a manly betta fish. Its amazing how we did the same thing.
Really liked this video. Thank you.
Awww love it! How sweet how you bonded
Just a heads up... That rimless 15 gallon tank is on sale right now (Aug. 8, 2020) for $35 at Petco when you buy online and pick up in store. I just picked up 2.
Must have been a 1 day sale or a mistake on website, its $86 now
I love the tank she scaped! I am binging on your vids. Keep em comin. Quarantine content!!!!!!!!!💯💯👏👏👏👌🤓🙌
Thanks for showing the "Manly Tank". I had a Betta and a Convict Cichlid in a ten gallon planted tank about fifty years ago . They got along well. I used the old carbon and glass wool filter inside of the tank with an aerator.
All of my bettas have fake plants, except for the moss balls and occasional java ferns. I've not mastered growing live plants yet. Also, I can 200% confirm that sand substrate shows ALL the dirt. Even with a clean up crew, it gets gross. I'm going to be switching to either gravel or plant substrate the next time I redo my tanks.
Florence The Unicorn would a fake plant setup with a gravel substrate be ok with a couple moss balls and still require low maintenance?
14:51 John, how dare you call me lazy. I believe you meant efficient. 😆🍻

For my manly tank, I have the 1 betta with a small castle. Some decorations as well. Loving the set up!!
Awesome Betta tank man. Thanks for sharing!!
Where to get silk aquarium plants? Love you Scott!!!
A longer (rather than taller) tank is more suitable for bettas so that they can reach the water surface more easily to breathe air. A longer tank also provides more longitudinal swimming space.
I have the same filter I don't use cartridges , I got two different course sponges and some poly floss. Place the sponges in the bottom the floss on top . Works great. No carbon.
the fluval and aquaion products can leach voltage into the tank. both of these filters did this with the 55g gallon fluval hang on back and the internal 10gallon filter aquaion. the fish werent harmed but i could feel the static charge on the water surface every time i put my hand in the water.
I have the same led light and I love it.
The MANLY tank is very cool! Having raised 5 sons I can affirm, the easier the better as far as loving lazy goes for most males of the human sort.
This did very much remind me of Home Improvement's Men's Kitchen 🙂

That’s a manly goldfish tank behind you! Lol
What about heat? Doesn't it need a heater for the water to be the proper temperature?
Yes, a betta needs a heater.
If your ambient temperature isn’t at least 90 degrees, yes, it needs a heater. And a thermometer. Bettas are tropical fish, and like a tank to be around 80*F water temperature.
It needs a MANLY heater yes. That's a heater made of guns.
