Yes, just yes!
Tomato is vegetable in a vegetable vs.fruit sence. Comfusion comes from lack of words to differenciate two meanings in english
In my language we have different words for "fuit" 1. Fruit="ovocie" Like apple, orange , strawberry, not tomato!!!
2.Fruit="plod" Seed-bearing structure that develops from the ovary of a flowering plant. (here can be tomato)

Furthermore, if such a thing as a god exists, I hope it wouldn't be as callous, petty, childish and vain as to require the adoration of a random species of talking primates on a random planet orbiting a random star near the edge of a random galaxy. I'd also assume this entity would have far more important things to worry about than said primates' genitalia, or who they want to share their lives with, or any number of other completely inconsecuential things these creatures could do.

I really want to start playing dnd, and videos like this are a godsend, especially for people like me who have no clue how to do anything in dnd. Kudos to you man!
Still not dropping the bar with these intros, Mark.
God I wish I had this video when me and my friends first started out. We spent about an hour going through the Handbook trying to figure out what the races did and what the classes did.
I'd blame that on the book. Maybe Wizards thought everyone would get the Starter Set first as a requirement.
Wanted to pin this comment, so folks know;
Originally I was going to do this as one video, but editing time and the overall length convinced me to split it up. It should be a 4 part total series, I may do a super condensed 5th video, that covers the basic steps of character creation without any explanation BUT I feel that it's important to try and EXPLAIN certain things so people understand what they are actually doing.
Hopefully this series will help, sorry it has to go out 1xday. As always, please do feel free to leave feedback (good and bad) to help me improve! :)
I can't wait to see them all. It'll help introduce the people who've I had watching rather than playing into the game! Do you have a release time frame on the remaining three videos?
Hoping for every day, but day 3 and 4 may lag a bit. Was hoping I'd get part 2 finished earlier than 1am so I could work on part 3 but no such luck. :( Got bits I want to re-record for it too.
This is more than worth the wait! Thank you for the amazing stuff. See you when you #rollonsundays !
Life happens! Don't kill your self making it. We'd rather (Or at least I would) see you happy and healthy then burnt out and sick just to get it out a few hours sooner.
We can mix and match races right? :x I imagine we take the traits and abilities of both races and work out which would make sense for the character. I couldn't pick between a tiefling and drow so I smashed the two together. haha ^^ Anyways, great vid! I'm slowly watching them all now that I'm caught up with HighRollers.
Heyo Mark!
Gotta say that I love the way you approached this as a sort of explanation instead of what we see on other D&D channels where someone actually makes a character. You're basically holding the players hand and leading them through the creation process. So anyone can pick up a character sheet and follow along in this video.
Great job! Love your stuff! Keep at it and don't burn yourself out
I am going to make an example character in the next three parts, because it makes it way easier to explain. BUT I wanted to do this first one as a bit more as a live explanation so people understand the very core basics.
Great, now I want to play Dungeons and Dragons in the middle of exam period. Thanks Good-Looking-Turps.

What do you mean charisma 3? Didnt you saw his fanclub-party?
@@ThePogo09 Sorry, I'm an anime-only peasant. Well, I guess this would be his starting stats. I don't really know how DnD works but I feel like you are able to increase your stats as you level up. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I've wondered if a low Charisma means that one has lower presence, in which case wouldn't that be ideal for a rogue?
@@commandercaptain4664 It's less about presence and more about your way of interaction and capacity for both genuine conversations or deceptive deeds
Charisma means being intimidating, being charming, being convincing, basically plenty forms of portraying yourself the way you want to
For example, someone shy with high char might be a sweetheart that can win your heart if they were to try, or they speak eloquently whenever they decide to do so
A non charismatic rogue would mean a rogue without these abilities, meaning you earn and lose some aspects about the whole "sneaking around" kind of ordeal
Think James Bond for a high char rogue, and agent 47 as a low char rogue
Both get the job done, but their vibes and methods are way different
Sorry, I'm kind of a dork about charisma, it's a really under appreciated stat
@@alexanderkorol677 Yes at certain levels you get "ability score improvements" that let you increase one stat by 2 or 2 stats by 1.

Thank you so much for filming this video. I’ve finally gathered a group together to play D&d and I’m wanting to have great footing. I’m brand new and cannot wait to start making my characters and explore the word of D&D. I just hope our DM will be more partial to us having a great time 😀
You are absolutely correct about below ten stats. One can build characters around the flaws and weave them in his story instead of complaining he was dealt a bad hand. Here are some numbers I just got while rolling a new character: 8, 16, 7, 15, 8, 16. You have the flexibility to either play a frail Spellcaster with high INT/WIS/CHAR or like I just did go Half-Orc Barbarian and get STR 18, DEX 16, CON 16, INT 7, WIS 8, CHAR 8. Waaaaaaaagh!!!!! I love this.
I’m making my first character ever and I just got lucky with a 17, but I also got a six so it’s gonna be interesting
Possibly one of the best and easiest D&D Character creation videos I have seen
I feel like I just found alternate timeline tomska
Now I can't unthink or see it
Finally somebody pointed that out
i thought that when i first heard his voice
So it wasn't just me
very cool, I don't have a group to play with right now, but I think I'll follow along with your videos and a create a character just for fun
I couldn't find a local group, so I play online for free at Roll20. Took 3 plays to find a group I liked. Can't wait for each session now
I love your approach, I often find myself compelled to look at classes first, then at the races and then all the other stuff. Yes, I have a history of being a min-maxer in DnD, yet I do agree that concept far outweighs stats and feature, even though I love all the rules grinding. I feel that 5e actually turned over a leaf for being less rulesy and more open to interpretation. It is more about why your character is than what he is or how he does things, the classic - Why, how and then what approach.
If I were to give a suggestion (Save DC 15), it is to actually look at character backgrounds before anything else, at least if you want to avoid min-maxing and making a stereotypical robot of a character like I used to do - Unless you play a warforged, that method doesn't bring out alot of character, and even then it would be a pretty soulless living construct even if you were to play a min--maxed warforged :P
Best help video on UA-cam, was DMing and recommended all my players (who were all new) use this video
Nicely going turps, doing another check up since my last one and i gotta say that i think you've hit the nail on the head on making these videos. Good amount of scene changing to keep the viewers involved, nice graphics and lower thirds, keeping everything neat and consistent, informative and clear content and branding. GG
The only thing that i'd say to improve now, but it's minor, is to get some sound bites in there. So maybe a swiping sound for a lower third and some thuds for the lists. Also some song for the outro/intro. Not fully informed on this stuff and it would probably cost money although i know there are free alternatives. Still, something to keep in mind and it's only minor ;)
Great feedback, thank you! I'm not 100% sold on noises for the lower thirds, seen a few folks do it and it can be very annoying and divides audience. I'll test it out in edits. I agree I should sort out some more consistant stings for the outros. (Intros tend to be my weird sketches so need to vary).
ahh sweet, yeh ok. I can see how the sounds might distract viewers from the content and get quite annoyed but glad to see you're taking feedback well! another pro from you
Thank you so much I just wanted a fun game to play with my family but I’ve never seen or learned about this game and was caught off guard by how in depth it truly is I can’t wait to get into it now
This was a lifesaver, man I was lost looking for ways to make a half decent character, thanks for making this
This is a terrific series of videos. Thank you very much for making them.
I am getting back into the D&D hobby after being away for 20 years - work, kids, life, etc., took priority over gaming. Needless to say the rules are a bit different from the days of THAC0!
These videos explained very well how to create a new character.
Oh another change from the last time I played D&D, this time I am teaching my daughter how to play.
Peace.
Thank you so much for this! I just started making one as my brother and his friends started playing D&D and offered me to join in. I was seriously lost trying to make this but with this help, i have a better understanding and now i think i've decided on what i want to be and play in addition to his background. Thank you, for sure going to watch the other video(s) and a definite sub to the channel.
Yes! So grateful you made this Mark, it's something I can shove at my friends to avoid saying the same things over and over.
Thank you so much for this. It made me feel less confused. All my friends have characters of their own, and this is the first time they invited me to play with them! I was a little embarrassed at being so clueless, but I really wanted to play this.
Can I just say how much I appreciate this series? like im not very good with numbers and got soooo confused on filling out the sheet but this makes it simple and easy and helped me fix my mistakes
I haven't played d&d in forever and your videos are not only refreshing me but entertaining the hell out of me thank you 🙏🙏🙏🙏
This is absolutely brilliant! I showed your videos to some interested DnD players and now they are hooked. Thank you so much!
THANK YOU!!! This series clearly and methodically explains exactly how to fill in and use every slot on the AD&D 5e character sheet! (WHY DOESN'T THE Players Handbook DO THIS???) First time playing D&D since 2nd Edition and I did not want to stall he game I'm joining asking questions! 10/10!
This is actually helping a lot. I’ve got an app that has helped me make characters before, but I’ve decided that I’m going to use an off core race, and a homebrewed class, both of which my DM has been ok with, and so far this is helping me really fill my character sheet out correctly lol
Ive been needing a video like this. I am going to DM a game this summer with all new players, and I have been playing DnD for almost a decade now. The concept of not understanding the game has become foreign and things I take as normal arent to others. This is a perfect way of explaining this to the players :)
Thank you for making this series! I'm looking to get into a campaign with some friends and this has really made it quite easy to start making myself a character. Keep up the fantastic work!

I'm making a DnD character on my own for the first time ever, I'm in a DnD group and have had two characters already (I purposefully killed off one character and am on the second) and the group has helped me make those two characters, but now I'm making my backup character on my own, and I had no clue what i was doing up until this vid. so yeeeeee.
also our DM hates gnomes and I don't blame him.
Why u purposefully kill a character off?

YES. SOMEONE ELSE PICKED UP ON IT. IM NOT ALONE
My friend got d&d for his birthday and he invited a bunch of people over to play, im super excited to he playing for the first time.
I'd like to say I want to play a half orc monk that doesn't speak orcish. My character was found as an infant in a time of war. The group that found me felt guilty about leaving a baby in a war zone so they left me at a monk shrine. Seeing the potential of me, rather than teach a half orc the ways of shadow they went with way of fist school of teaching. My character has a human name which brings looks of scorn from the townsfolk whenever he gets sent for supplies for the shrine. Having never seen another orc or half orc I'm unfamiliar with the customs or language but am aware of the orc god with one eye. He also enjoys tea over ale & mead. While he enjoys meat, if there is a plant option he'll take it. I'm sure I'll think up other stuff too but that is what I have right now. What do you guys think?
All the detail is ok but Id focus on what actually makes it to the table. What drives your decisions? What is your attitude?
Having an exhaustive backstory is fun, but it's more practical for role play to have a general attitude in mind. For instance, "My character wants to get STRONG and every choice he makes is based on that" is easier to play than "my character's father died in her arms while he said 'follow your heart, my love'".
*Wisdom:100*
soo hes a hipster
warcraftnut1354 i thought about a half orc barbarian who was raised by humans but struggles with his orcish background. He always aims to be the most noble version of himself, however at times he will be a savage and barbaric fighter and embrace his orc ancestry to crush his enemies.

Honestly.... I rarely actually PLAY a game. But I spend many hours making characters. Most of them will never see the light of.... a table.... but I love making them. I also am part of a short story writing group, so use the characters in that. Even the PC games - I'll fire up a D&D or Fall Out etc just to make the starting character. Then wipe it. For me, the creation is the main attraction. And I LOVE going counter to intuition - I want an Orc Wizard or an Elf Barbarian etc. Mess them up, put them in a messed up environment and play.... so much more fun than ... Well, vanilla Harry Potter "You are a really good wizard at a really good wizarding type place"....
Excellent work, Mark. I'm going to reference this video for newcomers whenever they have these sorts of questions.

Haven't played in probably 35+- years. Still have my original 3 volume starter booklets and I believe 4 supplements booklets. Still have the maps to my World and my dungeon 'levels'. I threw a lot of water travel at my visitors. Unfinished. Way back when we kept player data/records on 3x5 or 5x7 cards. It was fun.
Yay, more videos ^.^
It's all stuff that I've personally read up on in detail already, but even so I still find them very good watching, and I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of these as they come out!
One comment for this first part was that i had thought it might have been good to mention the other most common methods of deriving your base ability scores; I'm assuming though, that you considered it and opted not to for the sake of not over-complicating?
I know that some players still prefer to roll up using the harsher straight 3d6, rather than 4 drop 1, but most people I've chatted with about it in recent weeks have all trended towards favouring the point buy system. I suppose that's mostly because it protects against cripplingly bad stat rolls, but with more flexibility than the standard array?
For our group, with our DM warning us that we were fresh players going into what was a fairly difficult campaign, we opted to use a 'gentle' method of deriving initial stats; we rolled dice, but agreed in advance that if the final set was dangerously low or unjustifiably high, to scrap the dice and use point buy instead; no re-rolls, just one chance take or leave, and then switch to the system if they weren't acceptable. We also used an extended cost range for the system, to expand the bracket by two in each direction, so players that did opt to use the 27 points, could by down to 6 (for one point back for each point below 8), and up to 17 (at a cost of three points each for 16 and 17, in line with the increasing point curve); this gave more flexibility if the characters were notably uneven (My halfling is quite frail, and very weak physically; she's tiny even by halfling standards, so having a 6 Str and 8 Con suites her character well, despite the dangers that the latter poses.), but the expense of the higher points outweighed the gain from taking lower ones, so you paid for the extra free flexibility by ending up with an overall weaker character, by raw point value. Overall we're happy with the way it worked out for everyone; one player kept his rolls, two of us switched to point buy, and one of us used the standard array scores.
Our DM has also decided to be generous to us in terms of rolling HP each level; we can choose to take the average, or we can roll, but he's said that if anyone chooses to roll and gets a 1, they can take the average instead. There's still a risk in choosing to roll, but the very worst case scenario is averted. Those of us with a negative con mod *cough*, are particularly grateful for that concession...
Still, a handful of sessions in and our group got out of death house mostly intact and without any player deaths yet (mental stability and nightmares non-withstanding ), which our DM informed us was quite unlikely, just by the odds, so we're all feeling quite excited ^.^
Looking forward to the next installment of these videos, thanks for making them Mark!
-Erica
Hey Erica,
Yeah as this was intended for "first timers" I didn't want to discuss point buy as it is a bit confusing, likewise the "stats aren't good enough, re-roll instead". I think the Standard Array is a good backup for anybody who rolls really bad stats, and as it's a set thing, it's easier for new players to understand.
I usually do the "You can roll or take half" method for HP too. It's a nice risk vs reward element.
This is JUST what I needed. Thanks. 😀
You just earned a new subscriber.
Thanks for the help because for Christmas I'm getting a d and d set with the players handbook
I love the awkward rolling in and out of shot. XD
dual wielding spears
And a changeling race...
Seems great!
Which editing software are you using? Great video. Thank you!
Thank you, was forced into d&d and was sent this link
Thanks so much for these videos! I plan to join in playing the game with my boyfriend and brother during the next meeting and it's been helpful to hear a break down of making a character. (:
you just made my life so much more simpler thank you so much :”)
My first character is a dark elf rogue, raised in a dwarven monastery who’s pretty charismatic. He went out on his first campaign alone and lost most of the weight he gained for sneaking into the kitchen every night before he got developed survival skills. He fights using daggers and is pretty tolerant to pain due to his sometimes harsh training. He’s a tad too trusting but he’s really affable so things mostly go okay. Dark elves are usually discriminated against so he’s very neutral to people he meets and always finds the good in people as he can generally empathise with discrimination. He is my child and now I have to learn how to actually play so I can use him.
Hey, Mr. Hulmes. Thanks for this video series! I'm a totally new D&D player and though I have a ton of gaming experience, absorbing this whole process purely by reading the handbook is no easy task. I'm looking at the player sheet like, "Wait, do my numbers go HERE or over at the other spot? How to the modifiers get shown? Should I print this out orrrr no???" So many questions!
My first campaign starts this upcoming Saturday and I am excited!
Cheers!
I didn’t know how very different the meanings of “a rubber” was in the UK vs US
This is helping me. Got to start my D&D character
this is extremely helpful as I am making a Tiefling warrior and I didn't know how to make the character sheet.
I mean fighter not warrior
