I was obsessed with d&d when I was a kid but never never find anyone to play with so it was a game I played in my head mostly. I'm 47 now and my son found d&d and a game store that host games for magic the gathering and d&d as well that plays every other weekend. I love it that I get to play with my son in a huge campaign of 12! I drive 150 miles every other weekend to take him and we play for 4 hours or more as we chow down on burgers and hotdogs, chips, candy and deserts. My son helps me out with most of the details and he is very knowledgeable about d&d. It is the most bonding experience I have with my son since I haven't seen my son till he is 14 years old. I didn't know about him till he was 4 and then I lived in California and he lives in Florida. I recently moved to Florida to take care of my dad and started up a relationship with my son. Everything is going well and I have d&d to thank for helping me bond with my son.

I always feeling the same thing. In my place DnD isn't near popular, only a few secretive group of people that hard to found if you really want to play. Because of that, it decreased my interest to learn how the game works :\
this seems like a great game that depends on imagination...you are not just having fun you are developing your ability to narrate stories and create characters

D&D is pretty much a story which you tell by being one of the protaganists. The DM just provides the setting and the challenges and some adjudication while the rest is up to you.

Hey man, in 2017 a friend of mine on a whim said, “Hey, let’s play DND.” I had no idea how to play at the time. I knew almost nothing about the game. This video was super helpful! I am on the autism spectrum so although I have a good imagination it’s very hard for me to do performance or act based stuff. DnD really interests me, i hope i can learn how to play and get a game going, but its difficult for an introvert to find players XD thank you for these videos!
Lots of people play electronically. Using Discord and websites like DnDBeyond. It's hard as an introvert to just go find random peeps to play with. Try coworkers or family first.
@@jareddmunoz its cool that you mentioned family as someone you can start out playing with, I actually play dnd with my brother! He sucks at story line though, so I was forced to become the dm. I've only ever played dnd twice, but I was only ever a player, so I decided I'd watch videos like these to try and get a feel for things dm's would say. I've already come up with an entire story, a bunch of dot points for key events and I've written lore for backstories e.g. unfortunately my brother is the only other person to play dnd in my family, so rather than having a one person party and watching him struggle to defeat easy enemies I made 3 npc's that will be joining him and becoming a 4 person party. One thing I've noticed in this video, is that he uses a grid map to set everything out. So I might work on a few maps for the place my story is set in and for a few missions that he'll go on :)
It’s also hard to not be embarrassed by your choices or story plots when playing…probably why I never did, I think no one would find them interesting
I know right! I couldn't play on discord I'm too nervous and if I tried playing with a family member they'd call be a nerd so I guess I have to wait till I make friends that want to play the game with me
any suggestions for a group of people who have never played DND before and are looking to learn? I've been nominated to be the dungeon master and all the rules are flying over my head lol
Read through the Dungeon Master's Guide and the Players Handbook. Run a few practice sessions so you all can get the basics down, don't be worried about making errors, everything will come with time. Don't forget to have fun too!
I'm in the same position! This video was really helpful. Joshua, thanks for suggesting some practice sessions - that seems like a great idea!
Joshua DePesa That is the same advice I have gotten on sex.

Another suggestion that goes along with Joshua's, is to find a campaign online that can be completed in one session. Most campaigns take a really long time to complete so a shorter one will definitely help you figure things out

Thank you so much!!
I like how you play while explaining, it's really helpful! :3
Excellent!
I have a question. As someone who has never played D&D before (I mean, this is a beginner's tutorial), I don't quite understand why the checks are allowed to be so inconsistent. As in, I understand it's a vital part of the game to roll the dice and see what you're able to do, so a certain level of uncertainty is required to keep it interesting. But if you're trapped under a rope net and you need to do a strength check, it seems inconsistent to me that with the first throw the character is too weak to break free, but with the second throw he's strong enough. How does that translate when you're more advanced and have a high-level character? Can you get mortally wounded from, say a sword attack, because your throw was too weak, but when trying to fight off the attacker you're suddenly strong enough to kill your opponent because of a very good throw? I'm sorry if I'm taking things too literally, but it kind of feels like one second your hair is brown and the next it's blond, then black, then back to brown. It seems inconsistent, and hard to establish a good character with. Can anyone explain?
Basically it’s how your dm could narrate it. So based on your example with the rope net, it’s like the first time you tried to throw the net off, it got caught on the dagger sheath you are wearing on your belt and couldn’t throw it off. This example would be more meaningful if we say you and your friends were in combat and you needed to throw the net off to help them. In this case you would be stuck and unable to help them till next round if you were to succeed in throwing the net off.
@@michaeltao6665 Can i just, to make it easier for me, insert

For example, if i know Harry Potter very well,
cant i be him OR have him as my Side-Kick, so
i just have to specify which of the Spells that exist
in his world he can use, before the game starts, right?
I feel like it should be like that because the character has to have a limit to how they play the game because then it would be all based on luck
Well, as a beggining DM and new to D&D I think that it is your DM's responsability to narrate things in a way that makes sense for your character, so let's say in this situation your character is strong but fails a strength saving throw, so you DM could instead of saying: - 'You're not strong enough and can't cut the net.' He could say: - 'Surprised by the net as it catches you, your instinct compels you to grab your dagger in a sudden movement to try and cut the rope, as this happens your movement is floppy and you don't manage to cut the net just yet. It takes you a while but you manage to free yourself' I find that for simple stuff like this It's better to just make it so that the higher the player's roll is, the faster he can do something so if someone rolls low, I mean it's just cutting a rope, so instead of simply failing, it just takes a bit longer, or you could poke fun at the player describing an embarassing way of doing something, and if in combat this could be translated in turns, if you roll a nat20 you get free and has your whole turn, if you roll between 10 and 19 you get free but that was your action, and if you roll below 10 you get free but lose the turn doing so.
It's not a perfect system.
Low level PC, just like young adults lack experience.
They make mistakes.
As a character gets better at life they will gain more skills.
So as they will add more numbers to a strength check.
If I was the DM, and a PC kept getting stuck in nets, I would give them a bonus because they are gaining skills with every time they get a net off them. Assuming it's the same type of net.
Also, a PC could develop a feat so that they are really good at not getting into traps and or really good at getting out. This will help them to prevent additional dice rolls because they will be fine the first time.
Hi, I just wanted to let you know that your tutorial is absolutely amazing - it's short and straight to the point, but also talks about crucial parts of how DnD works that other videos gloss over or straight-up ignore. I've used it as an introductory for new players who want to get into DnD and so far it has worked incredibly well.
Thanks so much. :)
At 34 and just now getting into DnD thanks to Critical Role and TAZ, I have to say your videos really break the basics down in a very simple yet effective way. Much appreciated brother...keep it up!
Brought back memories. I haven’t played D+D in over 35 years. I would love to start up again.
At 43, and being "around" D&D on and off but never really playing, I'm totally going in and getting my family started for the first time! I'll be a new DM, with kids 17/14/8 (and my wife as well hopefully) and so excited to start ... as is the family (used your character creation vid to guide us in that process already) ... your videos have been really helpful refreshing my memory, catching me up, teaching me, and simply making me excited to start!
D&D is the whole reason I started writing as a hobby. I role played through text, went to live action, was told of D&D, am terrible with social situations and therefor never found a party - and so, I turned to making campaigns in my head, which morphed into me just essentially writing my own stories.
Even if I never get to actually play, it’s opened up something I find great joy in. That can’t be ruined by Nat 1’s. 🤣
Great news! You are actually playing, even if you are soloing it. There's a BUNCH of content about solo roleplaying. Check out "Me, Myself and Die!" with Trevor Devall and get ready to be blown away.

Thank you so much for this tutorial! I’m new to the RPG world so this is extremely helpful!
Thanks for this series! I’ve been following you for a couple months for your great map content, but I just recently volunteered to DM for my friends. I have very little firsthand experience with the game so while I already have a setting, story, NPCs and know vaguely what my players want to play, I’m not as familiar with the mechanics of the game, so this series is really going to help! Thanks!

Thank you for making this! As a new player trying to start off as a DM with two other friends, these videos will help ease me into getting started!
This is the best video to send to my friends before session zero.
Trust me, I have been watching many in order to find a truly great one.
This is so helpful, im dming for my group of friends and none of us have ever played before. Ive been doing so much reading but its so much better to actually see a short example of how its supposed to play out and how things are used
Going on my first adventure tomorrow this was super helpful
Great! Good luck!
how was the adventure? 👀
Just about to start my two boys on the D&D path. These videos are great refreshers
I am now prepared for my first ever session! Thank you!
Wow I love how creative you can be with this game!
Notes:
One thing I did NOT explain very well is how you know if a roll is high enough to accomplish a given task. Here’s a video that explains that better. ua-cam.com/video/qneAnvHrjl8/v-deo.html

Wow great discounts.
i've been watching your videos i thought i could not make map, i tried hard with no avail, later i stumbled on your tutorials! as it turns out i'm good at map making, i've just started getting into d&d i got a couple figures. i have a starters book set, but found it's way into storage, I watched all the parts to your how to play d&d thanks so much for being here!!!!!!!!!!!!!😄
Thanks so much. What a nice comment. :) Happy mapping and gaming!
I found this video and it’s sequel back in 2018, just after I was invited to my first game. I was honestly really intimidated at first, but these videos helped me get a better understanding of the basics, so that helped me feel a little less stressed out. I still struggled a little during that first game, and I was extremely nervous, but I ended up having a lot of fun in the end. I’ve been playing ever since, eagerly awaiting my weekly dnd fix :)
I'm about to go to a beginner's D&D night at a local cafe, and this is a great way for me to come prepared! Thank you for a great explanation!
Nice. Enjoy!
@@WASD20 Thank you so much for the help! I had a blast! My rogue was definitely one of the most useless characters though. He used his wisdom to try and swing from a loft and out a door, but fell and got stuck upside-down for a while lol. Then again, there was a huge battle inside an outhouse involving a bard gnome and a druid that set the outhouse on fire.
@@WASD20 I'm going to another beginner one tomorrow! Time to learn magic!
Dude thanks for your tutorials, for begginers this is a great help. I'm watching all the how to play series and of course like to all of them!
Thanks!
Back in the 80's when I started playing this we had a school club for wargaming and it was a popular past time. I think advanced videogames has killed it though. If you can give it a go, it is fun and a great way to spend time with friends and getting off that videogame screen.

I have to thank this game for being the base for my favorite gaming gender: RPG's. I'm starting to play this, it looks cool, and without limits.
This is probably the single most useful video for anyone who wants to start playing DnD (like me), can't wait to watch the next episode.
My friends and I want to play, but realistically none of them will learn the game enough to DM so it's up to me, but I've never played before besides a Warhammer RP game when I was in high school at my Games Workshop. We've talked about doing this for like 5 years. Finally getting into the rulebook and it's a lot to just start off as a DM and not a regular player, wish me luck, haha.
If you are looking for the paper I used for the map, Amazon sells it (amzn.to/1VePWyK) or check your local game shop. It's called Gaming Paper.
+WASD20 how do you decide if the roll is high enough do you just kinda make the decision as a dm or do you look at the base stats im pretty confused. like how you needed a ten to throw off the net but your strengh was 14 +2 how do you decide? if the dm just says so what are the base stats used for?
+MIGAIR b (MIGA101) some traps have predetermined stats to hit in order to break free or dodge them entirely. If not, the DM will secretely set a value for the trap in his head, or on paper. If you're the one setting the trap, he could let you know what its stats are.
Captain D Cap k i think i get it now
Yep, and in part 2 around the 1:45 mark you can see a handy guide the book provides for setting a DC (that's the target roll a player needs). Basically the DM bases the number on how difficult something should be in his/her mind.
WASD20 thank you
Yo that DM voice it sexy man. Good video great stuff.

Just came back to say thank you for these videos. They were honestly what helped me finally understand the basics and helped me to get into the game! This will always be one of my favourite videos on how useful it has been to me!
That's very kind of you. Happy gaming! :)
Excellent work Caleb
Great vid for beginners, or those like myself who have been out of the game for sometime. My kids recently picked up the starter box and have been looking to play. Hopefully your vids will help them, and myself in a fluid experience.
Newbie here. So far, so good!
I'm learning how to be a DM with no books, experience or equipment and this is a life saver thank you!
I didn't think I'd like watching a video about DnD but I decided to try anyway. Glad I did. I enjoyed watching this.
