This series literally saved my life. 😂 I was so confused and overwhelmed as a first time player but your calm and clear instructions made the process enjoyable, thank you! :)
I had my first game session of DND tonight because of you and the rest of the wonderful people of high rollers getting me into it. aside from a gnome with a high libido and a power complex enforcing him after the tallest thing he can find. and a dragon born druid who didn't realise that the person behind the bar was the person to ask about getting a room and a drink. it was a pretty smooth run through of the starter campaign. thank you again, many more happy memories to be made with my friends thanks to all of you! I put this on the high rollers vid but figured you were more likely to read it here. thanks again!
Thank you so much for creating such a concise guide! I've been wanting to give D&D a go for a long time but creating a character always felt more stressful than doing my taxes and my friend (who has been playing for ages) doesn't always remember that I get very overwhelmed without breakdowns like this. Best guide on youtube. The book and most other guides were not making much sense to me and now I feel like i have a much stronger grasp on what is going on.
I just wanted to say thank you for making something as intimidating as Dungeons and Dragons, and making it clear and easy to follow. This is by far my favourite tutorial series and it's helped me so much
Absolutely invaluable as a group of tutorials. I was absolutely lost and would never have been able to create a character sheet without it. I created Erador Galandriel; a wood elf whose class is a Ranger and strives to avenge the murder of his hidden elven city. An army of giant spiders and undead destroyed most of the city and killed his parents. Thanks again for the tutorial!

I attempted to make a character for pathfinder about a year ago and just ended up so confused that I was really nervous about trying out DnD. however, your video series has helped me so much and I have now successfully made my first character, a druid half-elf and its inspired an entire story that quite likely will end up written as a novel at some point. Thank you so much for doing this series, I actually feel like I can play confidently now :)
Thank you SO MUCH! Tonight, I meet with a group to create my first ever D&D character! For 4 decades I’ve been reluctant to start because it all seemed so complicated, but I decided to make the plunge a few weeks ago. Finding this series right before actually doing it has made me feel a lot more comfortable about what I’m headed into. I’ll let you know what I create :-)
this series was amazingly helpful. I still consider myself new to d&d even tho i have made a character before i had mostly forgotten. you helped me create my dragonborn cleric who was orphaned because dwarves nearly wiped out his clan when he was young. he was adopted and raised by priests before they were wiped out by raiders.and now he is in search of a new family. he is now distrustful of both dwarves and humans. he blames himself for losing his "clan" twice so he pushes himself to be strong enough to defend his next family, if he can forgive himself enough to let people close to him again.
First time i fleshes a character out completely in a character sheet, I made a Lizardfolk Barbarian! Thank you so much Sherlock Hulmes for helping out!
My husband and I just watched all 4 videos, I was so confused doing it by myself! With your help we were able to make our characters! Mine is a Tiefling Warlock and his is a Mount. Dwarf Paladin! Thank you so much!!!!
Used this for my first character. No classes or subclasses really seemed to play the way I wanted the character to play. Managed to create a custom homebrew class that’s a combo between a ranger and the storm/sea sorcerer subclasses for said first character. The fact that it didn’t turn out as a complete clusterfuck means to me that this was an excellent explanation of the character creation process.
By far the best videos on how to create a character really easy to understand, as a newby myself you make it very easy to follow can’t wait now to have another go at making a different character. Thanks Sherlock.
Thanks for the series. Some things may be confusing while you were making the series, but I probably wasn't paying attention, so I'll just watch them again. VERY HELPFUL!
I'm currently making a D&D class called "Monster Hunter", it's Witcher inspired and this series helped me clean up what I needed to make it. I'm very new to D&D and I don't see myself leaving D&D anytime soon. Thanks Mark!!
This series is SO usefull for new player such as myself. I first looked at the character sheet and thought i would never figure it out, you explained so simply, but informative and it helped me create an interesting character, thabk you so much m8
I suggest, as step one for all players, read the PHB. It takes me less time to read the book than it does to play (one night). You need to load all the information into your brain. You don't have to memorize it! It is enough just knowing where to look for an answer when you have a question. And don't allow yourself to become intimidated by all the stuff you "need to know". You probably won't be good at this game until your fourth or fifth gaming session. It is better for new players to practice acting than it is to practice referee. Above all else, remember this is a game of imagination, social interactions (good and bad), and puzzles solving. Have fun with it. Thanx for the video series. Well done mate.
Super helpful series. Clear and detailed with an entertaining gentleman to guide us through. Beautifully done! Look forward to having a go at creating a very interesting, but entertaining character of Gnol Izril, the Dwarven Sorcerer (with a low-level multiclass barbarian.) Found inspiration for his story from high rollers and can't wait to find a game to put him in action. Thanks again Mark! Never stop inspiring us to join you in this wonderful world of which you have such vast knowledge.
You seriously helped me. I've played tons of games of d&d as a player, and I'm teaching some new players, as a DM, and they've all made great characters.
This series definitely made me understand the character making a whole lot easier, im an wooden elf ranger who grew up in the outskirts of the kingdome!
I’ve been playing D&D since 1980. I used your 4 pt series to teach a new player (and myself) how to create a 5E character. Excellent videos. Well done mate.
As a newcomer to DnD, this series of videos was SOOOOO HELPFUL. Thank you so much for your clear, concise, and thoroughly comprehensive explanations! For my first character, I'm making a Triton Ranger with a background in Archeology! 😆
Wow !!! its taken me two years after buying the starter kit to get interested. Been on shelf having looked at the paperwork and just thought "I known let's wait for the film to come out. Now I am raring to go even went that little bit more and brought the Players Handbook, to fully get involved and one day I may be as good as you DM. Keep up this excellent work and inspire more people.
These videos are amazing. I like them because they explained each part in a very thorough way and you also described things other videos don't, so you answered lots of questions I had. I'm going to start playing soon for the first time, I'll be DMing for my friends who are also completely new to D&D, so all this info is crucial. Thanks for all your hard work!
Up until two days ago I had very little idea as to what I was doing, but these videos helped out IMMENSELY. Thank you for these wonderful, educational vids!
This video helped me so much man. Couple of friends have been wanting to do D&D for ages, but had no idea. I watched this video and made Leoenidas Swordhand, the Half-Elf Ranger abandoned by his human father after finding his wife had eloped with an elf. They read my sheet and apparently have now all said they're gonna watch this series to get theirs done. (:
This series will be a life saver, High rollers and Critical Role got me into DnD and now I'm starting a game with my mates, nervous to DM. really looking forward, putting together a pretty cool little quest for them, but just wanted to say thanks for explaining what seemed like a daunting task so well
it took me 4 hours to get through this series, but thanks to you I do now have a Tiefling Bard called Grin who is quite stupid but very good at stoytelling! He wants to travel the world to collect, write and tell stories about heroes, princesses and fairies
Thank you so much. I've spent many many hours and watched countless videos searching for this information. This video series was absolutely perfect and exactly what I needed!
Thanks for making this so in depth, I followed everything to the letter (which is usually hard for me as I'm thick as pigshit, when it comes to following instructions) and I've finally done a character sheet that doesn't look like it has been sat on. I've left a like on all parts and I'll definitely recommend this video series to anyone who wants to learn.
Many Thanks for the videos, being new to DnD this is all so daunting and i couldn't have filled a sheet without this guide. I'm trying to DM for the first time to my friends who are also all new to the game so i've gotta learn quite a bit to help them out with their character creation and questions.
Thanks Mark, I was going to make the major NPC's in the game I'll be running soon as if they were players, so now I can listen to this playlist and just start mass producing them
This is amazingly useful! My friend's and I are just starting out and we used your videos to get started. I am a Half-Elf sorcerer that loves deceiving people, and my other two friends are an orc barbarian, she hasn't finished her background yet, and an Aarakocra Ranger who is starting a cult. The videos were extremely helpful we had read over the pages a few times but couldn't figure out how we were supposed to be getting some of the numbers. Thank you, soo much for making these we had tried 3 other videos prior and none of them helped.
Thank-you for making these videos. Me and some friends have just started learning the ropes of D&D and this was perfect for me to create my first character: Orgoc the aggressive, Half Orc Barbarian!
Thank you so much for this series. I had started creating two characters already, but this series helped me understand the sheets when the book isn't clear. I have a Human Bard and a half-elf Rogue.
I didn't found a table to unite yet, but thanks to you, i have a character mildly well planned. It will be a Dragonborn monk who doesn't care a shit about spiritual things but is obsessed with being a badass martial artist, that could kill giant beasts snapping necks. I love it, and i'm sure my future DM will also love the concept
This was super helpful! I'm a first time D&D player and the sheet looked so foreign to me. Thanks to these videos I was able to follow along in the videos and handbook to make my first character. I'm a half elf bard. I hope she does well. 😊
I enjoyed this video twice, I needed extra help or listening skills to complete my character. The info was straight forward and great to watch. I designed a half elf Druid . I also created a gnome, I really wanted a gnome before I watched this video, so your info was awesome ! I am new to D and D and hope to make it to the hobby shop tomorrow night to play in a campaign
Great series mark! Will be showing the new players these as they are super helpful. The D&D empire will expand with people like you doing what you do! Keep it up!
I made an infant who crawled into a corner, all balled up, and wailed in agony over the amount of information given! Will my character grow up? Will my character progress? Who knows. It's a crap shot!
My wife is a Dragonborn sorceress who decided to ditch her family's mercenary company to make a name for herself using her wits instead of her brawn yet lives with the embarrassment that despite her imposing physique, she's a horrible, clumsy fighter. I'm a human second-born prince who's a gifted warrior but can't stand politicking or the responsibilities that come from nobility and since his older brother's death, he ran away out of fear of not living up to expectations of his title. Despite being ashamed of shirking his duty, he tries to make up for it by defending the commoners with his sword and shield. And thank you! Your videos made creating our character sheets so much easier.
I just created my first character using this guide in conjunction with the DND Beyond App. Thank you so much for this comprehensive information. Cheers!
I've been playing RPG since I don't know when, but never tried D&D because I thought It was too much complex, but when you get the hang of it, It's easy and so much fun! Anyway, I created a Chaotic Evil Human Rogue. Rolled those dices so good that it was kinda OP in the beginning! Loved the videos, shared with all my friends! Now I can finally be a true DM!!!
The Handbook's one downside is that it doesn't explain how to fill out the character-sheet very well, so I am eternally greatful for your help here, as a total newb. Cheers man, really. I'm playing a monk, so I didn't have to tally armor stats (Chuckles: "I'm in danger."), but I rolled high on dex, so my friends tell me I'll be fine. ^^;
Awesome guide. Created a Half-Elven Bard, who was raised by Gnomes as a foundling. He is obsessed with the tales of the Gnomish hero and inventor of the self-turning door knob Sparklegem (generic I know) who no-one outside of Gnomelands has ever heard of before. As a Bard of course it is his duty to correct such a terrible mistake as he travels the lands on his pilgrimage to visit the sites of great battles where Sparklegem, only slightly helped by his hangers-on (Consisting af a 7ft Barbarian, Eagle-eyed ranger and no one can forget the hilarious Drow assassin Blooddagger who loved Sparklegem like a brother but kept leaving his knife in Sparklegem's pillow accidentally), defeated the Frost Giant Overlord of the Fens.
This is such a helpful series, thanks! I’ve made a stout Halfling Monk who is a Guild artisan. I’m about to play in my first ever campaign and I’m so excited! Thanks again for the helpful tutorial!
Thank you very much for this I haven't played in almost 20 years this was a huge help and it will help my wife and 10yr old daughter create one as well thank you again I created a Tiefling Rouge who's quick witted but a bit of a butt to everyone
this was so useful and easy to follow. thanks so much for making these videos. we’re a new group playing dnd so this is going to help everyone at the table get the idea of character creation real quick and easy 😊😊😊
Thank you so much for making this series, it's much better than any of the others I've looked up, it helped me a lot in making my latest character, I've made two other, but this was definitely the best I've ever looked at, now I have a lovely, female yuan-ti rogue to play around with ^w^
This was incredibly helpful. I've been filling out my unfinished character sheet, which also happens to be my first. I have a really strange combo, and actually ended up changing some things from what I originally had that just makes her a more interesting character that I can't wait to play. I'm actually creating sheets for not just this one character but some of her friends and family from her backstory too since they're characters I'd love to have sheets at the ready for if a DM ever needed that sort of info.
this has really helped me out, thanks to these videos i was able to create a blackscaled dragonborn paladin named garon whitehaven, so named because of the orphanage he was brought up in. thanks to some good stat rolls and his natural dragonborn traits he has a base 20 strength at level 1 with an 18 in charisma, 16 constitution, 14in both wisdom and intelligence and a pitiful 9 in dex, hes a bit clumsy but thats just what happens when you dont know your own strength
Thank you! As an old time gamer (51 here) learning a new system seemed daunting. Still back on 2nd Edition. I have the books, might give 5th edition a go. :)
Thank you Mark for this brilliant and information tutorial. I bought the game a few days ago (first time dnd after baldures gate 2 :D ) and created my first character in a few hours. I looked up your tutorial to understand some details and as a check if I did everything right (86% was right). Hope, you keep up this channel! It is great!
Some friends and I are starting a campaign that's a Star Wars overlay of 5e. The process of filling out the character sheet was so overwhelming but this series has made it so much easier since both versions are very similar. I ended up creating a human fighter who was taken in by the Mandalorians as a child (Old Republic Era) fighting to regain his honor after his family was exiled.
This was so helpful aaaaa!!!! Thank you sm for this series!!!!!!! I created a dragonborn, druid, lover, (her name also happened to be surina hehe) surina is just entirely charisma and strength, i love her with all my heart
Thanks for this series Mark I'm a big fan of high rollers and this helped me create my character Armera, she is a kobold wizard who's tribe was killed in a dwarven mining accident. found in the rubble as a baby she was raised by the dwarves court wizard and trained. she is now on a journey to explore, cast spells and show the other "lesser races" that they too can achieve great things. ^-^
I made a dragonborn fighter who was exiled from his clan after he couldn't defeat his best friend turned evil - leading his friend to take over his hometown and create more draconians. Thanks! This tutorial really helped a lot - before my friend showed me this I was at the point of using a pregenerated character.

You are my DM role model. Your work has inspired my world so much.
Awww thank you!
Thank you so much! Just helped my son create his first character - a human, folk hero, fighter.
Thank you so much. I've spent many many hours and watched countless videos searching for this information. This video series was absolutely perfect and exactly what I needed!
This was honestly one of the best videos I’ve watched when it comes to making a character, so thank you!
Goodness this helped so much!!!! Made a half-bugbear ranger who wants to explore the world! Very happy with how she turned out thanks to this~
Thank you so much for posting this series! I had so much fun making my dark elf fighter!
This video is beyond useful! Seriously, I wouldn't have done it without your assistance! So well explained. A BIG thank you from me!
This was super helpful! I'm a first time D&D player and the sheet looked so foreign to me. Thanks to these videos I was able to follow along in the videos and handbook to make my first character. I'm a half elf bard. I hope she does well. 😊
this was so helpful! just getting into dnd and making my first character, welcome liliana, a slyph sorceress!
Cheers!
Woo! I've made my first character. She's a chaotic good Halfling Rogue. Thanks for making this series, it really helped.
Awesome I love ankle biters, they’re like midevil versions of Stabby the Roomba!
This was incredibly helpful. It cleared up some questions I had about proficiencies and bonuses.
The Handbook's one downside is that it doesn't explain how to fill out the character-sheet very well, so I am eternally greatful for your help here, as a total newb. Cheers man, really.
I'm playing a monk, so I didn't have to tally armor stats (Chuckles: "I'm in danger."), but I rolled high on dex, so my friends tell me I'll be fine. ^^;
Thank you very much for this I haven't played in almost 20 years this was a huge help and it will help my wife and 10yr old daughter create one as well thank you again
I created a Tiefling Rouge who's quick witted but a bit of a butt to everyone
Thanks to you, I was able to create my lovely Tiefling Druid, Survith Talron! Thank you so much for this guide :)
First time dming 5e. This was a great help so i can help my players with their first characters
this was so useful and easy to follow. thanks so much for making these videos. we’re a new group playing dnd so this is going to help everyone at the table get the idea of character creation real quick and easy 😊😊😊
Thank you so much for making this series, it's much better than any of the others I've looked up, it helped me a lot in making my latest character, I've made two other, but this was definitely the best I've ever looked at, now I have a lovely, female yuan-ti rogue to play around with ^w^
This series is so incredibly helpful. Clear and simple. Thanks.
Thank you, this helped me work out the bits I was getting stuck on. Making my Kenku Rogue for the first time and there's so much stuff to think about!
Man I wish these existed when I tried to learn the rules to DnD, this cleared so many things up that I still had trouble with. Thanks Mark!
No problem! Learning on your own can be tough, easy to miss stuff!
I was going insane without this series, thank you
Thanks Man after being into warhammer for quite some years now this was an amazing guide. Ber Beakdancer the clumsy centaur bard is coming
This helped me so much being a first time DM and helping my first time group build there characters for the tomb of annihilation campaign
Thanks very much! :D
I am 4 years late, but this video series is still super useful, thank you!!
also, that spell casting tutorial would really come in handy ^-^.
That is an AWESOME character idea! I love it! :D
thank you! your series is the first i found that made this process seem easy
This set of videos has been a life saver. Thank you so much for making these!
I made a dragonborn fighter who was exiled from his clan after he couldn't defeat his best friend turned evil - leading his friend to take over his hometown and create more draconians. Thanks! This tutorial really helped a lot - before my friend showed me this I was at the point of using a pregenerated character.
