I don't know what your vocation is , but you should be a teacher, you are clear precise, I even could build a deck after your instructions. You're a blessing. Hugs
This guy did an excellent job with this deck... I really appreciate the attention to detail. In fact, it looks like it's actually in the front of the house, which means everyone that drives by or walks by will see it. I'm big into making things look symmetrical, and this is exactly that. I also like the size, it's big enough without being too big. I'd love to see the finished product, but I'm sure it'll be beautiful... well done!
thank you for this series, i thought i missed one cause i went from the footings to this frame already built. can't wait to see it done. edit: nvm, i read that you were coming out with that vid
Great to finally see a video of someone who does it right and to code ! I see so many clowns with videos and it makes me cringe ! Great job 👍👍 Your doing things right and the workmanship absolutely shows ! Awesome work !
it's a joy catching your vids ... you do a fantastic job on all of them. Great explanations and take time to share how you think through these projects. Great vid man.
Omg THANK U! This was exactly the info I needed! Tackling my first deck build for my mom, hoping to show “the manly men” (that think I can’t do it) just how tough we ladies are. Since being in 2 abusive relationships I have learned to do a lot of my own DIY things and knocking off my moms hunny do list too😆
We're in western Oregon and used concrete footings on gravel. Made the 2nd one floating since we had some rotting of the siding with the first attached deck and our neighbor put his foot thru the top redwood boards! It rains a lot here and decks take a beating.
Really love the way you explain and go into detail. My 1st job was at Home Depot and I miss the DIY projects but just a little research goes a long way. Thanks for your channel and are you still sore from jack hammering those steps? 🥺😅🤯
It would’ve been awesome to see this go up from start to finish, in clips of course. Nonetheless, it is self explanatory for anyone who familiar with this type of work. Thanks for the video
Hey! I did make a couple videos on the entire deck process. I also made a start to finish time lapse video if you are interested. ua-cam.com/video/SehPijelC4g/v-deo.html Thanks for watching!!
Drove by several times during filming, haha. Looking good! I just built a 4x10 deck over here last month. I’m right down the street if you ever need an extra set of hands!
Beautiful construction! It's satisfying to see something done so well. My only question is about how close the posts are to the house siding. Is that going to make it difficult the next time you paint the house? It seems like one more inch of space would have made that much easier.
Looks great I’m going to build one exactly like yours I do have one question. Should the deck be supported under the 4 x 4 or is it OK the way you did it?
P.S your voice really reminds me of another channel called "corporals corner".. Both very informative channels haha Love the content dude, keep up the great work!
@@TheFixerHomeRepair he does bush craft/survival stuff he builds a lot of stuff out in the forest, I think you'd really like it actually. My pleasure! Really enjoy your vids 👍
The way you flashed it makes sense because in theory if that copper flashing went straight down you think water would get through the breakage caused by the lags, anchors?
I am adding a corner to an already existing angle deck to square it off. I'm adding a corner 4 x 4 post. Do you have any videos, instructions, or resources on how to add new framing to the existing angled deck 4 x 4 framing? I just can't find anything to that sort for instructions. I too live in Massachusetts so it would be based on Massachusetts code. Thanks for any help you can give me! Christine
Either you (i know your busy with a new home, your channel, your family with little babes) or any of your subscribers for suggestions! Thanks again, Christine (a twin mom also!)
Thank you for the video. Can I build this same deck accessing my home using a free standing application. I prefer not using a ledger due to moisture considerations. If so how would you recommend footer and post location closet to the house? Thank you.
One of my smaller decks are build sideways, I see a weak point in one corner near the ledger board. Framing seems good, other than them building it sideways instead of joisting from ledger. Can that be repaired or braced and blocked safely or should it be a tear down and rebuild. 8ftx6ft
Yes or have full bearing. This is actually no longer up to code in my area (I can just put a 2x4 under and down to the concrete). Be careful with notching though, If you do notch, don't continue the 4x4 up to use as a handrail. Attach a new 4x4 with lags because notching is against code in a lot of places... if you are getting it inspected of course. Hope this helps.
Honestly, If you don't have anyone that has to tell you it's good to go (inspections), I don't think there are many drawbacks. Just build it to what you think is good. If it is a floating platform, the threat of getting hurt from it collapsing is basically gone. If you save money by going down in size for the lumber and skipping a lot of the expensive metal fasteners and it works for what you need, I think it is a win. But I didn't tell you that. 😁👍

Hi! I live in Massachusetts and had to pull a permit for the deck. If you call your town's building inspector and they will be able to answer any questions to whether or not you need a permit for your projects. Good luck!
I’m not that super far from you, Pennsylvania, I had to go 3 x the size of my post, like 12” for 4x4 I used 6x6 so I had to use 18” sonotubes, then attach the the 6x6 with brackets, had to be 36” minimum deep for sonotube pour itself plus 24” minimum footer or “ bell” under that, so basically 5 ft minimum depth, pour 2 feet concrete, then 36” minimum pour on top of that after the footer hardens, 18” round, I just wish I didn’t live so close to the road I live by, my grandfather, since the house was built it 1951, everything he did as far as fixing, upgrades, add ons, me since he passed like 10 years ago, never got a permit nobody ever said a word, boy, everyone is basically new in my town now, 10 years here or less besides me, & they sure make things tough lol, seen me tearing the 40 year old concrete porch off, next day 3 different people asked what I was doing, & also “you are getting a permit I hope” lol
Framing technique is the same for both but what you have built is a "Landing" at the size of 4 ' x 8', a deck is normally much larger to provide useable space for outside activities such as a sitting area, BBQ ing, etc. Just saying.
I wish you had shown us YOU doing this, rather than just explaining. That's what I came here for. Things are more clear to me when I see someone doing it and explaining it at the same time. Oh, well.
Would you and your wife like to work at my house in Alabama in the dead of winter? No snow 🤣🙏 I already have everything and all materials to go in it. You may stay there so no hotel expenses. I will be next door. 😀 2.5 acres if you have pets bring them😀 1 story house on a slab nothing up high. Doing some cool things. Moving fireplace from exterior wall to 16' wall inside. Removing 2 garage doors putting in 1, 9'x9' door in center and I want it to rise up through the ceiling between the rafters when open. Would like to rewire the house.

Is it OK to rip a Pressure Treated 2x to custom width, and nothave to 're - treat' with a chemical preservative onto the cut side?

They should only require those tensioners in certain circumstances IMO; maybe based on area of the deck and/or height above grade.
I tend to agree with you. As I said in the video, I think they are a bit overkill.

Building on unrestricted property, looking at a floating platform for a tiny dwelling, what are the drawbacks?

Hey! I am going to picture frame it but I do that anyway just to add to the structural integrity. Stay tuned!
