Caravan Drum Solo - Ken Loomer Jazz Quartet

  • This is the famous song Caravan that so many jazz drummers have done in the past. Drummers like Gene Krupa,Buddy Rich,Louie Bellson,Art Blakey,Max Roach,Mel Lewis,Jo Jones,Jeff Hamilton,Shelly Manne,Sonny Payne and so many others have done this song in their own way. So I wanted to to pay tribute to all of these great jazz drummers who I have learned from all of my life. This is from a concert I did for the Sarasota Jazz Club with my Quartet. Starting the song on piano is my very good friend Tony Castellano Jr. The one and only Franco Marino is on tenor sax. My main man on bass is Bruce Wallace. On this concert I decided to use my 1968 Slingerland Modern Jazz Outfit No.9N like in the Slingerland 1968 catalog. This has the 14x20 inch bass drum,8x12 tom,14x14 floor,and I used the 1976 Slingerland TDR 10 lug snare drum. These drums has the 3 ply shell with the solid maple reenforcing hoops. One of my favorite drumsets to play on for jazz.because it has a great open sound which is so clear to hear. For more info about me,go to kenloomer.com.

    This is absolutely brilliant! Not only is Kenny's technique & timing world class - but his solos are interesting, mind blowing AND his drums are tuned impeccably! I've had the privilege of sharing the stage with some amazing drummers. Jimmy Cobb, Bernard Purdie and Danny Gottlieb come to mind (to namedrop a few). Ken Loomer should be as well known as they are!!

      @@KenLoomer HEY KEN, HOW ARE YOU DOING? I HOPE YOU ARE DOING WELL. I HAVE SEVERAL QUESTIONS FOR YOU AND I APOLOGIZE IN ADVANCE FOR BOTHERING YOU. FIRST QUESTION: HAS THE COVID19 CUT DOWN ON THE NUMBER OF JOBS THAT YOU ARE USED TO? 2ND QUESTION: HAVE YOU EVER USED VATER STICKS AND IF SO WHAT IS YOUR OPINION? AND LAST: HAS YOUR BAND DONE WESTSIDE STORY? I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR IT. THANKS SO MUCH. GOD BLESS YOU.

      @@frankcampbell4154 I`m doing good and no problem answering any of your questions. Of course Covid 19 has canceled so many of my jobs since the music festivals,clubs,performing art centers have not opened up. All musicians have been hit hard because of Covid 19. I have never used Vater sticks.I have used Vic Firth 5A wood model for over 20 years now.It has the right feel and balance for my type of technique. I have never played West Side or Channel One since Buddy Rich told Cathy Rich he didn`t want anyone to play it when he passed away.That is why the current Buddy Rich Big Band has also never played these arrangements. I also think those charts belong to Buddy.So I have decide to played his other big arrangement that Buddy Rich played which is the Porgy & Bess Suite. Here is my Ken Loomer Big Band doing that suite ua-cam.com/video/I-bz6g9HSK8/v-deo.html It`s a very demanding arrangement and I know Buddy would love that a drummer like me today has a Big Band and playing some of his great music.Thanks Frank for your comment.

    I love the way the recording is so raw. Sometimes the beats are better distinguished from each other with less microphones. But gee, that is such expressive and well executed playing, also love the way play on sticks and whatever nice sounding metal is handy - no matter how good the drummer a long enough solo will demand new sounds to keep it fully alive.

    • @KenLoomer
      @KenLoomer  Рік тому

      This video was done with only the camera mic so you get what these drums sound like in this concert hall in a natural way. No closed mic for each drum going through a sound board which you can change the sound. I`m always trying out new idea`s when I do these type of open drum solo to make it exciting and fresh. Thanks Bernard for your comment.

      @KenLoomer  2 роки тому

      These Slingerland smaller size drums has that great sound because of the way they made their drum shell.It has the 3ply maple,poplar,maple with solid maple rings on them. With my wide open tuning with the Remo Ambassador heads ,it gives me a clear full tone out of these drums. I`m sure DW will do a good job of remaking the Slingerland brand. Even Ringo, often used 20" Ludwigs, with all the screaming fans in the 60s.
    These Slingerlands look and sound sensational.

Since these are my arrangements, I get to play what I feel and what will make the music sound the best. When it`s time for my solo,I just play what I`m thinking at that moment. As long as the people enjoy my bands and playing,then I know what I`m expressing is working. So do your own thing Tony and have fun playing.

  • @yumha38

    Very melodic and inspiring solo Mr Loomer! You have a very elegant style, in the tradition of Mr Bellson. When you get down really soft, to get that really nice bounce of the sticks, is it all fingers, or are you squeezing the fulcrum and using the middle finger to get that bounce?

    • @KenLoomer
      @KenLoomer  8 років тому +1

      I have used both ways of this style to play very soft. When I want a very low volume fast single stroke roll,I will use all fingers in the Joe Morello style. When I need more power and sound,I use mostly all wrist to get the job done. So I like to use a bunch of different techniques to do whatever I`m thinking about when I do this type of drum solo. For me,the hardest thing to do is to play very soft,and keep the flow going. Thanks so much for your comment.
