I saw Gene Krupa when I was around nine years old. My Dad took me to the Metropole Cafe and I was literally in heaven! Since then, he’s always been my hero!
"I don't care who you are, you gotta start with the drums" --god damn right. and nobody comes close to his mastery of brushes, even the other greats. Papa Jo is as good as it gets.

These gentleman are masters and it's a treat watching them.
Gene Krupa's musical philosophy is so underrated with regards to being aware of the audience getting restless/bored of listening to an extended drum solo. Man knows how to entertain a crowd.
Fabulous, PapaJoe always swings like mad and always looks like having a ball doing it. I saw an interview with Buddy Rich who adopted Krupa’s set up , and kept it that way throughout his career
Dear God! Steve Gadd is my idol. Now I will add Papa Jo Jones as well. That brush technique! OMG. How lucky if you got a chance to see and tutored by him.

While I think about it, my grandfather was pretty damn good on drums. I never truly appreciated his talent at the time, too busy listening to rock, his brushwork sticks in my mind as being wholly sympathetic, expressive and able to convey attack at the same time.

Kenny Washington kid player.. Tony Willimas kid who watching seriously... Tommy Flannagan (piano) and Joe Newman (tpt).. I can't see de bass player, sorry.
Sure looks like TONY and I believe TONY did study with PAPA JO but this was done in the early 70s when TONY was already an adult and quite famous in his own right! Kid looks like a young Tony Williams though! Wonder what he’s doing today maybe if he sees this on UA-cam he’ll comment
@@nealsausen4651 Thinking back, I remember Tony was mostly under Alan Dawson. I have a new theory. Tony, that kid, Dennis Chambers, basically any of em that could really swing, were actually Papa Jo's sons. They didn't call him Papa Jo for nothin!
They must ve all had hearing problems in those days not any ear plus in sight you gotta wear ear protection all the time if you wanna keep playing and prolong your playing days
Papa lights up the room with his smile and confidence, as if to say."what about this", or "pretty good huh?". If anyone has a right to be cocky, he does. But, I do not get that impression.
Thanks for the Richie Goldberg name - new to me, but I always thought he looked pretty damned accomplished here, not some regular hobby drummer (like me)
Dude, really? Tony Williams in 1963 he started playing with Miles Davis. Also, you should have been able to tell that it was not him just from the playing.

Jo Jones was the one. He and Krupa are the ones to listen to.
How I enjoy Watching Papa play. He has so much fun enjoying himself. A legend.
I Met Joe and my teacher played with both. Played with Gene two days before he passed at Gene's house. They were good friends.

Love Gene and Joe. What a cool video!
One of the true legends - a giant - a King. And still limber & graceful in his later years.
Thanks much for posting this. Invaluable drumming and jazz history.
So inspiring to watch these gents; R.I.P.

wonderful drummers in this fragile world......
This is so awesome to watch this footage
Mint footage! Fantastic!!
Damn! his brush technique is awesome.
This is one of those things that you watch and marvel at what human brains, and human bodies, can do.

Master drummer. Top 10!
The trumpetplayer is Joe Newman.
Excellent clip...
Methinks Papa Joe was just being polite to Krupa. Haha
If I could go back in time, I’d snap up one of those beautiful Gretsch kits!
I just sent this to Kenny Washington and he told me it's NOT HIM AS THE STUDENT in this video!! Just letting you know.
The drummer's name was Shelton Gary.
Have make a time machine so I can visit Joe Jones in his drum shop.
let the the stick play...instead of the stick play you.......words of the master to the apprentice!
Elliot Steinwedell.. The grip is amazing
These guys lived on feel irrespective of the instrument they played sadly lost to popular music of today
Papa Jo is the most beautiful cat ever ... my god
An absolute master!!!
Gene Krupa. The bomb of drummers.
jaw dropping artistry!
A true gentleman.
@2:07 hey it's Frank Zappa :D
Was my first thought too!!!

We love you Pa pa , and we love Gene!!! respect netzah
He was like a happy version of Buddy Rich
so wholesome
At 5:24...I didn't realize what a monster this guy was. I'd kill to play brushes like that.
from 5:23 on, just realized I had a goofy grin the whole time :-D
Lol same dude
master of masters

Tommy Flannagan (piano) and Joe Newman (tpt).. I can't see de bass player, sorry.
No, the first student was Shelton Gary.
This man brought his lunch pail to work every day.
what's the name of the music that Jo Jones asks for the mustache man to play? It is "devil gate"? 3:09
That is Ritchie Goldberg..
First! Awesome video!
Is that Frank Zappa 2:07 at the desk?
One word to that . . . . WOW!! :)
Musicality of the drums, it’s a great art, some have it, others should sell their sticks for firewood..✌🏻🥁🥁
The drummer taking a lesson with Papa Joe at 3:05, the great Richie Goldberg.
His roll is insane
Whats the choon at the end anyone?😁❤👍
In my mind I can play just like Papa Joe Jones and Gene Krupa..... The problem is my damn hands and feet won't let me!......
Who should be number 1,2, and 3 according you?
buddy rich?
louei bellson?
gene krupa?
He sounds like Wario but acts like Bugs Bunny lol
What's part 1 and 2?
2:06 Young Frank Zappa at work
3:05 Young Peter Erskine practicing with Jo Jones

Papa Jo!!!!!!!!
He played so damn nice.

Great influencer for Modern drummers today
Is the older student Steve Berrios??
TONY WILLIAMS
What is a double gate?
His voice sounds much different than I thought it would. Also, Hank Azaria could easily play Gene Krupa in a biopic. And their drumming is good too.
They already did one. Sal Mineo played him.
Who is the trumpet player 6 minutes into the clip?
They must ve all had hearing problems in those days not any ear plus in sight you gotta wear ear protection all the time if you wanna keep playing and prolong your playing days
Whose the dude with the teeth?
❤ ❤

Haw. Gene, you shoulda heard the way he talked about you behind your back!
(He talked shit about everybody. It was his gimmick.)

At 4:00, what he says sounds like something that Roger Taylor of Queen would say.
Was that Frank Zappa
2:06 Frank Zappa???

What year was this?
'let the stick play instead of the stick playing you'.

2:24 Tony Williams???
My thought exactly!! I wonder...
Kenny Washington

That doesn't look like Kenny. Are you sure?
@@MrPartidoalto no it’s not Kenny.
Who is the kid he's teaching?
