Heck I was 49 when I did my Camino. The elders kept passing me by. I had to stop in Orisson. I was not prepared for the first three days. After about the 20th elder passed me by with great pace, I convinced myself that I was just taking my time. That was funny.
Nice video. I walked CF 2X- 2016 at 57 I walked all the way to Roncesvalles in 1 day - full pack. It was tough. Not fast but I made it. I was with my 21 & 22 yr old daughters & wasn't easy keeping up with them, but I did it. The 2nd time -May 2019. Just turned 60 & I stopped at Orisson. I liked that MUCH BETTER. Added bonus...How many people can say the slept in the Pyrenees??
I am so excited for you. You are living your dream, you planned and trained for this. You look so happy. We all leave Jeff’s tomorrow. We missed you. Can’t wait to see your next video. Views are amazing.
Loved watching this! I walked the Camino last year at this time so it’s fun to follow along. We did stop in Orisson for the night and were glad we did. Buen Camino!
Nice video. Good advice too. I'll be 68 when I do the Camino next year and I'm still trying to work out crossing the Pyrenees in one or two days. I'll be quite interested in following your walk. Buen Camino. - Randy
I’m following your Camino closely. My husband and I are contemplating the Camino for next September. I appreciate the video and pictures-and advice. I like what you said about stopping in Orisson; I think that is very wise. Buen Camino! I hope you have a wonderful journey!
Well done on day one... thank you for taking us along on your journey... wife & I are in the planning stages for a 2020 Camino... still debating a May or September start... will be following along.... cheers
Pondering Hiker in Pamplona now and loving every minute. I think you have 2 good choices there. Definitely reserve in Roncesvalles they were turning people away after 2:30
It has only been a few weeks that I am home and I miss it so much. you are so right about stopping I orison instead of going all the way to Roncesvalles. another recommendation would be to send your pack ahead both from st. jean and orison. I am 69 and a woman. the walk to orison with my pack was brutal but better to Roncesvalles without my pack. Why didn't I know there was an alternate route for an easier downhill????
Don't feel bad. I didn't learn about the alternate route down until I was crawling into bed that night (with severe tendonitis in my right hip). That descent was a bit brutal!
I love your videos. I watched the Finisterre/Muxia first. I am recommending your video's to friends of mine that are considering walking with me this summer.
Brutal, but you did it!! Looking forward to more intel on the weather conditions, lol. I think it may rain a bit when I start next week, so good to know that it’s already cold up there. 😊👍
I am a 59 yr female and will be hiking in two weeks. I didn't realize the weather would be so cool up there. Am a little nervous as I have already made reservations all the way through and won't be able to stop in Orisson before Roncesvalles. I also didn't get the training in that you did, but did do what I could.
Possible option is hike up call a cab back to St Jean. Then take a cab back to that spot the next day. Or just give it hell and go over in 1 day! I had to change my dates due to a hurricane coming to Florida and the municipal albergue in Roncesvalles changed mine via email
Diane. An option is to take a day back with you and send your full pack ahead for 5Euro. Super easy & safe. Just keep your Passport and $ with you. If you have any last min questions feel free to email. I'd be glad to share some tips. My email is dmlinohio2@yahoo.com Buen Camino Debora
My wife and I walked SJPP to Roncevalles in one day without problems and we’re 63 & 62 - you don’t need to be a marathon runner just have prepared by training, be reasonably fit, ( don’t try to keep up with the youngsters) take it steady and have broken your shoe in!
I had a perfect weather day and trained hard beforehand and still had to dig deep. It was difficult. The next days into Zubiri and Pamplona I was just cruising
#1 I dont think anyone is offended by your comment on people over 40-50 dont go straight up. Thats what you think is right, no problem.# 2 did I hear you right you are using an iphone camera? for filming thanx
dave thanks. These were filmed edited that night and posted to UA-cam within 48 hours of each day. That’s why there is no music and very basic editing.
(route = root = way) I was very impressed with your first day efforts. I'm planning on Orisson for Nite 1 as I buggered my tendon in training with 10mls and 10kg pack on a flat..... it's me age and being a couch potatoe. Efren here ua-cam.com/video/VNpuP_6deIo/v-deo.html is a daily Camino Vlogger too. Best. (Your pack does look heavy and over the next 100mls Efren started getting rid of gear).
I subscribe to Efren. He is very talented and has the cameras and drones and other gear to match that talent. My pack is less then 16 lbs between 7-8 kgs and isn’t any problem. It probably looks big because it’s a 48 liter pack but isn’t full.
I am enjoying your videos but I have to say, you pan so quickly, I am feeling a bit dizzy. You'll probably get the hang of this as you go. Buen Camino.
The first 3 lines translate to "If you need passenger transportation please don't hesitate to call" - that is backed-up by the next two -WHICH IS IN ENGLISH! Doh!
Beautiful - thank you

Just so you know. You have to have a reservation if you plan on stopping in Orisson. Book online a few months in advance since it fills up fast.
Thanks Dale...enjoyed your video and your commentary at the end. It affirmed our choice to stay at Orisson on Day 1. Buen Camino.
Glad I decided to book at Orission, especially as weather reports predict rain on the day I leave St. Jean.
Good call. Stop at Orison. I plan/ hope to do this for my 70th year in 2022.
Sounds like a great way to celebrate, Buen Camino

Even the alternative is steep
Beautiful, Dale!!

Thanks very much. If you ever have any questions just ask on comments. I follow them closely.
Love your commentary, makes it very interesting. I almost feel I'm walking with you.
Thanks so much. Makes me feel great. I’m trying to bring everyone with me!!
Wonderful countryside.! Tough climb, eh.?
It’s a tough first day

Cold but wasn’t freezing Looking forward to following your vlog.

Debora C great idea. I’m seeing many on the Camino doing this
Stunning. Must take Napoleon instead of Valcarlos next time.

Great Video!
Thanks so much
So much beauty to see on the first day. We will be commencing our walk in the 7th Sept 2020.How where those feet after the first day?
They were fine actually but I was tired. I did a lot of pre camino hiking to prepare though.
Dales Outdoor Adventures we have started to do weekend hikes leading up to the date we leave Dale.
Thanks for your videos. I started to follow BDE Travels (Great Videos!) and I am going to follow you also.
It didn't look as though you had a rough time crossing over the Pyrenees
I had a perfect weather day and trained hard beforehand and still had to dig deep. It was difficult. The next days into Zubiri and Pamplona I was just cruising

Yes iPhone XR
@@DalesOutdoorAdventures BTW great filming, I believe some of the best of all the camino vids I've seen

BTW I dont miss music, I would rather hear someone talking about their experience as the go or afterward. Thank you.

Yes I think it gets better but I was new to youtube at that time and shooting everything on an iphone. I wish I had panned more slowly also.
I can already tell you were getting the hang of it as I am now on day 6. I really appreciate your pragmatic detail.
