In order to properly test a battery or charging system... you must load test. I thought you might go that route at the beginning. The charging test you did is a great quick check method. But as you're saying for a detailed battery analysis, the battery must be cycle tested. Measure the voltage drop on a load test, measure the charging capacity (time & rate), as well as the discharge time and output. Those are the ingredients for proper battery condition methodology.
This is the proper way to tell if the battery is good or not, i am sure that i've watched another video when you test batteries but i found this one hiding from me somehow in your old videos playlist lol thanks a lot for all these great video lessons
When i had my repair shop the way we tested the fake battery with original one was to put _on + and +on _ on the battery ,if the power supply shows 0 current the battery was original, but if the battery shows any number the battery was fake. That worked for us very well.
Hi Sorin.. Is it possible for a faulty battery to cause a motherboard to fail?.. Immediately after replacing an old battery, with a new third party battery, the laptop failed to start, and all LED lights failed to light up.. Multimeter shows that the power adapter voltage is good, and also that the power to the motherboard is good... discharging the laptop and connecting only power supply, doesn't fix it.. still no start up, and no LEDs (2 minute hold on power button for discharge with adapter and battery removed).. what are your thoughts?

So if an old battery has higher resistance, it must tend to heat up when trying to charge ? Hay that new battery checker rejuvenator device you show'd us ( in another video ), I went to the site to buy a this rejuvenator they say they where back ordered and wrote a contact note to them and they never got back to me.
I dont know exactly how to calculate Battery internal resistance, but if its Ohms law , then 4V on 1A is about 4 ohm of resistance , by the way , that Resistor , doesnt look like one to me ,that looks like Ceramic Cap , metal foil cap or something , but i guess it is resistor , otherwise DC wouldn't work . Like always Sorin ( yeah i know the name ) makes good videos, no commercials , no product placement , no "unboxing videos" , no " look what i purchased videos " , just str8 electronics .
you can make that math only with voltage over battery voltage. So if battery voltage is 3,6 and on power supply you have 4V with 1A then is 4-3,6=0,4 so that will give you 0,4ohm internal resistance (not precise, some of that will be resistance of PS cables etc but close enough). And yes, he didn't use normal resistor but NTC thermistor. That's why you can see current go up over time, as it get hot resistance go down from rated value. They are used as inrush current limiters.
Hi again Sorin and community, as I m trying to charge the Li-ion using digital Power supply, it beeps for Short circuit. Is it the battery or the psu ? Thanks
Heheh, what Sorin forgot, is that under that plastic piece of the battery, there is a charging protection circuit. The last protection for battery, and you can just cut it out and use battery two leads plus and minus and charge, all the way. Its not always the battery that's wrong itself, sometimes its the battery circuit. under the plastic.
I can assure you he didn't forget it. The whole premise of the video is A customer walks in and he has to find out *immediately* if the battery is really due for swapping or the phone's problem is elsewhere. Haven't met a customer that's ok with disassembling his original battery for any reason.
so if with 2.0A have 4.0v or something around that ,then we must have with the multimeter 3.7,3.9 or something higher than 3.6. if we have 2.0A and 4.6v and with multimeter have 3.2v then we have a faulty battery am i right?
The first point might not always be true, but your second point is correct. High voltage with power supply but low voltage with DMM most likely means bad battery.
Thank you for this video, it's very useful! Did you limit the volts and let the PSU decide on amps by the battery draw or did you limit amps and let PSU decide on volts? Or let him decide on both by himself? Sorry for confusing question, lol, my lab supply is acting a bit differently so I'm not sure by watching yours :)

Also, I have one more question... From what I understand if a battery is new, the values between charging and testing w multimeter should be very close. If it's new, new, not forgot on the shelf. Then, considering that what I said is true (if you can verify or know), if you attach a capacitor to a 40% battery that has 4.5v charging @2Amps and 3.7v testing with multimeter (FOR EXAMPLE)... if you choose the right capacitor, can you somehow smooth it back, like in a dodgy way... (In an example, that, if you could - 'cuz clearly you cannot attach it in a phone that's perfectly enclosed (with no space left). What are your thoughts on this? Wikipedia... "The more a capacitor is charged, the larger its voltage drop" "The current alters the charge on a capacitor, just as the flow of water changes the position of the membrane. More specifically, the effect of an electric current is to increase the charge of one plate of the capacitor, and decrease the charge of the other plate by an equal amount. This is just as when water flow moves the rubber membrane, it increases the amount of water on one side of the membrane, and decreases the amount of water on the other side." I'm trying to get to a solution to fix the internal resistance of batteries... If you open them, instead of adding a capacitor... Does battery have a physical resistance inside, in the circuit? Or are you saying that the batteries themselves in time create or retain resistance?
adding capacitor on dead battery will help with short (extremely short) current draws but in normal usage if battery is not in condition to give current directly it will not be in condition to charge capacitor either. There is no physical resistor inside of battery, resistance is created by long electron path from it position on foil to battery terminal. (over simplied)in older battery anode and cathode foil get damaged, it's harder for electrons to move to terminal and resistance grow up. Additional heat crated that way just make things worse creating more damage and resistance grow up more and additional heat.... Also I think many people didn't get from where voltage difference coming from. He try to explain but it can be hard if someone don't understand voltage drop occurring on resistor when current pass through it. That's main reason why bad batteries give higher voltage measurement - you have voltage on battery (let's say 3.8V) and voltage that is dropped over "resistor". If normal battery have resistance of 0,5 ohm and two amper go into that battery voltage drop over "resistor" will be 1V. So 3.8+1V will give you 4,8V. But if your voltage is 5,8 that mean resistance is double than normal and it can't be good. I here choose 0,5ohm just for easy math, new good battery will have lover resistance and voltage drop will be even less than 1V with 2A charging. It will be around 0,5V or even less.
That's a nice job! Sad that we lost you from our country... I may have needed your knowledge and skills with a Clevo Laptop now that it's not charging the battery (but the led is orange, like charging).
