Back in the 70’s when I was a young teenager I had a bit of wood with 2 lengths of wire top an bottom (a bread board) and a ‘lucky bag’ bag of bits. I got a small pocket analog multimeter for my 14th birthday and away I went. I tried making a soldering iron and blew the mains fuse for the ‘ringmain’.
Nearly 45yrs later I’m still learning about electronics.
My hobby became my job and today I learned something from Sorin.
This is the place for honesty.

Another great video Sorin. Just a word on ordering from China. If the item ordered is valued above £10 approx, customes and excise will ask for 20% VAT which is okay BUT, the Royal Mail will add another £8.00 set admin charge. So, if the soldering iron costs £19.00 from Ali Express, expect to pay an additional £11.80 !

I am an experienced TV engineer , I totally agree with you no need for expensive tools, so what I have done is, packed my over priced Pace solder station. the NEW solder station in the workshop is a Z99 adjustable solder station I think to 460 oc, the cost £11:85 p no special treatment normal workshop use I want to see how long it lasts, I've also bought a cheap hot air station, as of course the Pace is off line, I'm fascinated to see how they will perform, because I've often wondered if I paid for the name not the device.

You are right, for beginers is ok, but my opinion is this:
    1. Fluke multimeters will never die even is wrong conected. A China brand will die when you will conect the A or mA in paralel or any other harmfull connection.
    2. A cheep soldering ironer have a long warming time at start and not so real measurement of temperature. An old school Weller is the best, will never die.
    3. If you need a powerfull soldering ironer (150W), don't use rubish, use weller or other good brand. Is expensive but you will see the diference.
    4. I started with the same tools like you, good advice, now i'm using weller, fluke, wera, is a good mix for me.

The searching for tips and the soldering iron after, is actually a really good tip. I learned it the bad way. Bought my 1st soldering station, a cheap one, and I couldn't find no tips nowhere. I then searched for tips and found out that the Hakko brand is really good and there is a lot on Chinese knockoffs just as good as the original ones. All kinds of tips and soldering irons at really good prices. I have a 2 in 1 YIHUA 862D soldering station and a cheap hakko tips compatible soldering iron for easy transport.
Bought two ANENG AN8009 from Ebay. Very good price/quality and comes with a bag with lots of accessories and different tips.
I use KINGBO RMA-218 gel flux, very good price/quality.

Thanks for the inspiration and motivation 🙂 With the excellent videos you have uploaded I’ve repaired 8 Samsung phones varying from a Note 3 faulty note screen to a total restoration of Samsung S6. Over the weeks I’ve been buy tools needed for each repair including Kalafonia flux. Next on my shopping list is a hot air station and micro-soldering tools. I had some difficulty sourcing quality suppliers and with just starting the business, working capitol is limited and I buy as and when needed. I ordered a screen for the note 3 which turned out to be faulty. They sent out a replacement one the next day. Can you give me an indication of what screens you keep in and do you send your old screens with working touch to a refurbishing company ? Any way thanks for the inspiration Sorin and keep up the excellent work. 🙂

Hi Sory thank you for shariing so much valuble information. Your doing a great job and because of that life hope is good to you :P I did not see the video but i would like to test my ideas before watch the video. So i assume the 4 must have tools for beginners is training/education. How to use the rite screwdrivers. How not to pull things just because they don't come out, how to use the shoulder gun by feeling the instrument and the board, and by the time you get to have all this in one go, anyone should be able to do basic repairs. But this kind of tools takes years to self develop and not to use them against you,:)) to make you lose more then your earnings are. It is a highly difficult start for pretty much everyone. But once you get the senses rite. You then have to learn a new complex world of electric component and the massive amount of information you must understand and be able to use. I wanted to say that it gets easier the more time you spend practising the job. But in reality ... is not true at all. it gets wireder and harder each iterration of electronic devices. To the point when The really smart ones can do a lot of money but the vast majority will fail. So yeah. Higly valuable to have a loaded brain. But what are the side effects of the long run? sudden death? and still looking young? Every year you must be adapting or dying. maby you don't get to suffer straight away but in 10 years you need to learn adapt and use what you learned , if you can in order to ensure success in the future. But we are getting old and we are getting worn out by stress and the many difficult moment technician experience at work.

Agree, for the average hobbyist doing the odd soldering repair - I still have an Antex XS25 I bought in 1991 - had one replacement element in that time, still going fine :D I have several multimeters of varying price and function - maximum £30, the most recent £10 Aldi one does everything I need :D I have a Weller station and hot-air station from a clear-out so they would have ended up in a skip. Be nice to have a microscope but even though I consider myself doing a lot on repairs (including SMD) I can't justify a) the cost and b) the space needed :o

Yep i have the 25 watt iXS25 as well, a good iron but the tips just get eaten away inside (typical for antex tips), no it's not the iron getting weaker it's vanishing copper lol.
I have an old fluke bench meter, but those yellow mastec 830b meters i have loads of,.
Dead handy to monitor many points on an amplifier that's on test.
Crude little things but great for basic Go/No go tests.
Aldi can be handy, but if you see something usefull then get it fast as you can, they don't sell the item again for years.
I've had ratchet spanners/digital calipers and heatshrink tube from them, good enough quality and cheaper than halfords.
Although anywhere is cheaper than halfords lol :-D

@@zx8401ztv yes true with Aldi stuff (and Helfrauds :D) - I hedged my bets with the multimeter as they had loads - got it for £7.99 when there were still a load left after a few weeks. On the other hand they had a gas soldering iron on recently and hedged again but then they only had 2 left the week after so stumped up full price :/

I have a fluke 87 III and a fluke 87 V. The V has everything like duty cycle, Hertz , current clamp probes (that I need to get 80$-140$ dollars later) I would never have had these if my dad didn't get me then after his job retired them for no reason besides deemed "flaking out" and its never even been calibrated....I'm an overclocker and repair/modding enthusiast of all the things and I've never needed the resistance accuracy, special features or anything since I've had it. I'm glad I have it but I'd never pay 500 $ like they go for... I also using a clearence 20-30$ soldering station and just changed the tip after 4-5 years. Only thing I need now is more rosin flux. I've been using some liquid flux...I think I'll go watch your video on how to make flux.
Edit. I also have a few hot air guns but theyre the big hair dryer size. They've saved many computers, graphics cards, cell phones laptops , xboxs etc. From water damage alone also thank you for teaching me things like heating up the board on a space heater. You remind me of my dad actually only you can actually explain things well haha no to see if his power supply is linear and show him why I'll be shorting those resistors
