  • For my 1120th review, AJR tones their sound from excruciating to just terrible in their pursuit of empty melodrama, gutless spectacle, and an overprivileged status quo.
Best Songs: 'Turning Out Pt. ii', 'Don't Throw Out My Legos' (maybe)
Worst Song: 'Break My Face', 'Beats', 'Birthday Party', 'The Entertainment's Here'
    2/10

iTunes bio: Formed in 2005, New York City-based indie pop trio AJR mix barbershop harmonies, electronic music, and other styles into their eclectic sound. AJR feature the talents of the Met brothers, Adam (vocals/bass), Jack (vocals/guitar), and Ryan (guitar/piano/vocals), who grew up in New York and got their start busking around the city, covering songs by such bands as Fun., Vampire Weekend, and the Beach Boys.

David Sam Hunt only got an 8/10. He said Ex to See was his favorite song of the year and singlehandedly elevated the album, but that he wished more of the album would have played in that same vein (as well as being pissed at Sam Hunt for not releasing that song as a single). That’s why he appreciated Drinkin Too Much and Body Like a Back Road so much more than any of the singles off of Montevallo.

As an AJR fan I have listened to all of their albums more than once and I can proove they are great. Okay so I've been reading the comments and why are people so butthurt over the fact that fans try to defend the band 😂
We like it, we don't tell you to like it.
People criticizing the review might argue they think the arguments aren't valid. I personally don't like it when people say stuff like: "How could anyone be so dumb to like this?" or "I'd like to see you defend yourself, I don't think you can" because it makes fans feel guilty or stupid for liking the album when honestly, it doesn't hurt you.

@Cinema Crap yeah when clearly the album is directed towards people moving on to be adults, meaning millennials at this point, and that some people won't be able to relate and people have different opinions on what lyrics are good and what aren't, for example, billie eilish, people say her music is for depressed 14 year Olds, and a huge amount of people can relate to her music, same thing for ajr but since it's a smaller band everyone has to say that they're music is a waste of time when they are making a difference even in the slightest, I have a point of view where the album is not about dumbing down words and trying to tell the person that they're wrongs are alright and that they shouldn't fix it, and a point that isn't Pointed out in any review that also clearly changes the view of where the album is coming from is that the music that is being produced is not a song that they think people will like, cause it's not, it's ajrs personal experiences in life and, they honestly couldn't care more if people don't like their music because theyre selling out shows and being successful while critics like this guy do nothing but bash albums, no hate to this guy, everyone has their opinion🤷‍♂️

This is such a strange band for me. Spoiler alert, I'm not a fan, but their particular brand of lyricism is, not fantastic to me, but it's often fairly distinctive. And the vocals are the forefront of their mixes so well, they are not hidden in the mix, but for the life of me I can't remember how a single one of their songs goes. I can't even remember the vibe of any of their songs. And that's strange, I've certainly listened to enough of their songs multiple times.
They just strike me as an incredibly unambitious band. For some reason, my brain wants to say that this album is a bit redundant with the Toro Y Moi album that came out this year. I'm not sure how much that makes sense, but I sure felt the compulsion to be reabsorbed into music with some atmosphere and care in its mix.

Honestly, i thought that this was worse than the click. While the click was embarrassingly bad, it is at least interesting in a “what the fuck am i listening to?!” Kind of way. It has more punch, more groove, it’s catchier and has a few more decent songs. Yes, the spokestep is gone here, but it honestly makes the album more boring and draining to sit through. There’s no groove, no punch, it all sounds flat and mechanical, jack sounds even more bored than he was on the click, and the lyrics try to go for a sentimental feel, but just feel juvenile, immature, and detached from reality(*cough birthday party cough*). I will say Turning Out part ii is the most tolerable song in the album, but only just tolerable.
And seriously, why is jack taking control of the vocals for the majority of this album like he did last time?! At least in Living Rooms, there was a chance for all 3 brothers (Including Adam met), to show off their vocals. And I’m just going to say it, Living rooms is their best album. It’s not perfect, it has a song called “thirsty” which is an embarrassment to the indie pop scene, but they weren’t as grating and they even showed off some potential, especially with the song “Pitchfork Kids”.
Really, neotheater just pisses me off in so many ways that I wanted to die after listening to it. None of the songs will ever match “I’m not famous” in terms of dick-shredding terribleness, but it doesn’t mean much. Still, I wasn’t disappointed in the review. I honestly didn’t think you were going to review this, or even give it higher than a 1, but still, I’m satisfied. Still, Regardless of any bashing you or Jon have done, this album managed to reach #1 of the alternative charts on iTunes (#3 as of now), which means we might hear more “indie”-pop migraine inducing melodies from these guys....Ugh.

This is something I've noticed with music reviews in general. They're often much more concerned with what a song has to say than how it sounds. This can lead to horrible auditory experiences getting high praise, while very competent and highly visual tracks get inordinately panned.
I do appreciate where it's coming from, though. It's hard to communicate how something sounds and why that sound works or doesn't, outside of extremely broad terms. More specific analysis requires a more in-depth formal understanding of music to make than I'd wager most internet reviewers have, and certainly requires a more in-depth formal understanding of music to understand than the vast majority of their audience has. So if you're stuck using vague terms, and you're reviewing a huge number songs... that discussion is going to get extremely repetitive to make and to listen to. Plus music is media with some of the lowest barriers to entry of any art form, being easy to listen to for no cost and only requiring you to spend a few minutes to do it. If you want to know how a song sounds, you can just listen to it. It makes sense that reviews would spend their time analyzing things that actually require some level of analysis, and the analysis of which can be clearly communicated to a general audience.
    I get it.
But that focus creates a more notable disconnect between what's important for reviewers and what's important for everyone else than most other types of media out there. I guess that's part of why even the most popular music critics are barely as noticed as mid-tier critics of TV, games, and movies.

It‘s so funny that any vocaloid track made by rando‘s online that try to be experimental are more creative and unique than AJR. I can also definitely see why you said they are a cheap copy of TOP. Since they certainly are and it surely is cheap too. One can dsipise twenty one pilots all they like, but they can also admit that they are at least genuine and weren‘t bought into the industry and manufactured as much.
I‘m usually pretty open minded as an artist who likes a lot of different genres. But you can just tell when something is written by corporate soulless hacks. It lacks creativity and boldness. And I feel like AJR certainly hits that mark. They are just horribly unoriginal and it is funny to me also that they have to make it parental advisory when I can‘t imagine any adult actually listening to this. This is so clearly manifactured to be marketed to edgy kids and that‘s very obvious too for how much the covers look like marketing to kids.

Next Up Forever: being scared or anxious that you CANNOT do something if you did not drop and forget everything like family, friends, school, even your own CARRER and just work on only proving to the world that you can be great that you are the best
Birthday Party: when your young your thinking 'Oh my life is gonna be great I'm gonna do great things everyone's gonna love me' but its not that way and when you think its goin' great your life just crashes
100 Bad Days: not being afraid to be out there, not being afraid of being judged , and not being afraid of well, bad days

Break My Face: everything is so bad and you hate it so much but at least you know what's coming and you know what to expect so everything bad that happens to you you just walk it off
Turning Out Pt. ii: you just mess up EVERYTHING and your scared, your scared of being out there, you've been broken way to many times so you never wanna try again
The Entertainments Here: your life's SO boring and you try new thing and they're great at first but then they just slowly get boring
Karma: YOU HATE YOUR LIFE SO MUCH YOUR WAITING FOR KARMA BUT N O IT DOESNT WONNA SWING BACK ATCHA (sorry that one hits personally for me)
Beats: your music career is amazing and its going great but one problem, you just feel like your just like other music artists you just wanna be different but nothing's changing
Wow, I'm Not Crazy: your on all these meds and you have all these fears and you stand out so much that its kinda uncomfortable for you but you meet someone just like you and you don't feel like your along, you feel as equal as everyone else, you feel normal for once
Dear Winter: you want a child but your scared that they might out grow you and you don't want them to slip away from your family life but no matter what their sexuality, what they are what gender they're into, what they support, your child will always be yours no and you support them 100% (UNLIKE SOMEONES FAMILIES)
Finale (Cant Wait To See What You Do Next): your scared that this is the last thing that you will do you don't really wanna do this anymore, people don't seem appreciate you anymore, everyone makes you feel like your doing NOTHING right, and last but not least... no one supports you and every time you mess up no one helps you even when you helped them
