  • Are AJR as Bad as Everyone Says? (theneedledrop review). AJR have been making a name for themselves over the past few years with albums including The Click, Neotheater and OK Orchestra. But with worldwide exposure can come an onset of haters. Is the dislike of AJR's music really justified? Or are people just liking what their supreme leader Anthony Fantano tells them to like?
    Also, I'm now aware that his name for himself is "The internet's busiest music nerd." Don't ask why I thought it was "Everyone's favorite music nerd."

    fantano’s channel is the whole point of music discussion in general. he shares his opinions on music, people either agree or disagree. To say that music review channels are pointless doesn’t really make sense imo. People who love music like to talk about music. The same goes for movies, sports etc. music review channels like fantano also help people discover more obscure artists they never would’ve known about, so they are a great way to find out about new music as well.

    I really agree with this! I got into AJR's music because a friend played it once while we were hanging out, and I really enjoyed the songs so I went and listened to the rest. To me they seem very passionate about their work and their fans and their music is so _real._ It was disheartening to start to see so much hate towards them and jokes stereotyping their fans for reasons that just didn't make sense to me. People call their music all bland, but have they ever actually listened to like... Karma? That song is so raw and full of emotion, it's anything but bland. And saying that Ryan is single because of the theme of a song he made just feels more like a personal attack more than a critique of the band's music. Dear Winter is very sweet, it's one of my favorites. The "all their music sounds exactly the same" argument doesn't make much sense either-to me it's always seemed like each album has its own distinct style. Songs on Living Room don't sound like songs from Neotheater. Overall I just don't understand the hate they get.
    You can dislike their music, it's a matter of opinion of course, but just don't try to ruin the fun for others. Just let people enjoy what they like.

    • @keys.and.knives
      @keys.and.knives 2 роки тому +19

      Exactly! I've been left in tears from their music. There's so much raw emotion. And each song has so much thought put into it. I've heard that people say the overtures are bad because "it sounds to busy." But if they take the time to really listen, they'd see that it's not busy at all. Each part of the song has a certain flow to it. Like you said, they're allowed to not like them, but this is just too much.

    • @luizin1801
      @luizin1801 Рік тому +1

      Karma is raw and full of emotion? Although I think that is one of the least bad songs off neotheater, I would not reach and say that it is "raw". Dear winter, as said by Fantano, is about naming your son before meeting your partner, and that does not seem healthy to me. The argument that all of their songs is the same kinda of makes sense if you see what they're aiming for, reducing any kind of simple emotion/thoughts to a younger audience to enjoy. They may do songs that are kinda catchy, but saying they are deep is too much.

    • @tjtrashcan9761
      @tjtrashcan9761 Рік тому +18

      @@luizin1801 I wouldn’t say naming your future child before agreeing about it with your future partner is toxic. I mean some people who want families often times may have certain names in mind for a child and some don’t. Arguing that it’s toxic to name a child that isn’t even a clump of cells yet with a partner that you may not have at the time is an illogical argument in my opinion.
      It’s like thinking of a name for a pet that you don’t yet have in your life or even know the species of.
      And yes, not all of AJR’s song reaches the same depth as some others might but something I personally like about their songs is that they focus on a single subject or idea. It expands out in a way that others who may not have experienced that event can understand the nuances of the feelings or thoughts one might feel at that time.

    A lot of the stuff he says about artists he doesn’t like is very hypocritical. The fact he gave SOUR a positive score(**), and hates AJR for not being original, is a red flag for me and just proves the point even more. Also, I like that you said something along the lines of “I like their music, and that’s all that matters.” Don’t let music reviews make you feel bad for liking specific music. In the end it’s all based on their own opinion. The one thing that bugs me though is the fact his army of followers won’t listen to a record before critiquing it. Fantano listened to ‘CLOUDS’ live on his twitch and barely any of his chat liked it before he said anything, and then fantano said it wasn’t too bad. When ‘LOST’ dropped, he listened to it, and I think it the poll was three to four times more positive that time…
    **If you like SOUR that’s okay, but I just find that having every song about a breakup is kind of annoying and repetitive. I would consider it a breakup soundtrack more than an album.

      Your example of hypocritical critique isn't very good. Anyone can like and dislike music even for the same reason. Exceptions exist for a reason. It's not hypocritical in any way.
      I don't like breakup songs. (or most love-themed songs in general) I think they are just not for me as I haven't experienced one. But somehow, I really like Driver's License and I actually felt empathy with Olivia there. I can also criticize some trap rapper for saying way too much about sex, party, fashion, and drugs, but I can still praise Playboi Carti's mind-numbingly enjoyable music because I somehow vibe with such an unoriginal theme.
      It's all in the matter of some other artist doing it right, or sometimes doing it even better. The only way I can think of someone being hypocritical in critiquing music is when the person is doing the same mistakes they criticized with other artists. Anthony HAS displayed that sort of behavior before. (quite frankly, everyone has. But it's best not to leave that behavior unchecked)
      Your other points are still true tho haha

    @annw7843 2 роки тому +30

    I know he gave other reasons, but the dislike of picking out a name for a future child came off as either low key sexist or just completely out of touch with women. A lot of girls and women (though not all) pick out names that they like for their future children, likely because girls are generally socialized to prepare to get married and have kids. I kinda feel like he doesn’t like a guy doing it, just because it’s a guy doing it. I honestly don’t think he would have brought up the same point with a female artist.

    It really pisses me off when people get on to ajr for writing childish songs because lots of times THATS THE ENTIRE POINT!! and lots of people listening to living room were like "it's so cliche, do something a bit different" and then when they do people are like "omfg this is garbage" like what? If you take a step back and look at AJR's songs, you can truly see how IMPRESSIVE it is that they can even do those crazy sounds, even if their music is not for you (I personally love it, but like all music, it isn't for everyone). Like the vocal thing in bummerland; my mouth dropped when I heard that because the skill needed to do that was incredible. But people were so quick to judge instead of listening and it made me mad.

      I know right? Yeah it's not for everyone, but that's where it shines! It's specifically looked to certain demographics/mindsets. "For children" so what if it is? That makes it bad? "It's cliche" what kind of criticism is this that doesn't go into detail about how unoriginal it is? Does people these days can't stand happy melodies and simple vocals? Is it because it's meaning are either open and/or both closed? I understand "disliking", but "hate"? As a whole? I mean what's there to hate about them, all their songs have meaning relating to the music industry and growing up in life! It's not generic as sexual activities displayed on screen, proactive lyrics, or barley hearable vocals.
      It's just as unique and relatable to me and many, many others from what I read in fan's stories. AJR music has people become comfortable in expressing themselves in countless ways. Our experiences relating to the song helps us understand eachother.
      The songs "It's On Us" and "100 Bad Days" helped me comes in terms with being happy without fearing like I'm basically nothing. I don't have a healthy relationship with my parent or siblings that I could ask for any amount of support or thoughts. I don't have friends either. However, their songs made me feel worthy to continue on living. Even if they stopped making music, I'll forever be in their debt.
      So yes, I'm biased. But for a reason I'll stand by for their positive influence on my life foward!

They do what they do and dont care what some people say. If you want to pick it apart and talk about how the lyrics are childish and whatever nonsense, then simply they arent for you. You have to take them for who they are. The fanbase is so incredible were just a bunch of people who are socially awkward and have depressing lives(mostly cant speak for everyone), who find joy, happiness, safety, and emotional meaning in their music like I do. When I was in high school I would listen to Neotheater when it came out everyday to get me through my bad days of being bullied and pushed around. Their music has helped me through the worst. the critics are not harsh enough on AJR. I genuinely think they are the worst band of all time, up there with MGK in lacking in any talent and horrible vocals and boring, repetitive structures.
    I am a huge twenty one pilots fan, AJR sound nothing like Tyler and Josh. Yeah TØP only touch on that a handful of times like in slowtown and stressed out (about not wanting to grow up).

    Even though they may not have ripped off their sound from other bands in a literal sense, they end up sounding derivative regardless. It’s like they’re the store brand soda of their sound.

    I recently discovered AJR and fell in LOVE with them and their music instantly. And the next thing UA-cam suggests me is a hate TikTok compilation towards them (glad that it is banned in my country). Like what's the point? I listened their song, it felt relatable to me, it's good to hear and I can vibe to it! I don't give damn if it's "too similar to 21 pilots", to hell with that. And tbh I think their style somehow makes me feel close to them, like they feel more like a school/collage friends than some big music artist. I just don't understand the unreasonable hate for them, it's ok to dislike but hate(?) it just doesn't make sense. Same with Imagine Dragons, LOVE them, don't care if others hate them for no reason. I too feel that people watch these music reviewers just to be "this guy with big music knowledge also says its a good/bad song". I'm glad that UA-cam recommended me your video. Defiantly subscribing.

    Being young does not excuse immature songwriting. Hell, Slint were in high school when they wrote most of Spiderland, and that's one of the most mature rock albums ever written.

    Last comment, sorry. The reason I watch needledrop reviews is because he turns me onto albums and genres I typically wouldn’t listen to. A ten minute video explaining the appeal of an album is hugely useful.

    I wanna refute the "it feels like I am emotionally an adult but still living out my youth right now" it very much feels like they are coming to a "youth problem" from an still young angel while being adults so emotionally they wanna tackle these bigger topics like growing up on "Please don't throw out my Legos" but from an age where it feels that they are too old, so to me it feels like they are too old to tackle problems like growing up even tho they are young, writing wise I feel like Billie Eilish "I am getting Older" does this way better because less than reducing the problem to throwing out Legos it tackles it directly as growing up and finding your place in the world and she like the youngest is not much older than 18

    The answer to the thumbnail is no they are not bad, they’ve brought a whole new type of sound to indie pop and pop in general, anyone who says they’re bad are lunatics. But I respect their opinion.

    answer to the title: NO. IT ISNT. this band is the best thing I've ever listened too, I love them more than I can even describe, in total people are stupid and have stupid opinions. you cant hate on others for liking a band, especially if said band makes them happier each day. this video is great, thank you for not disliking my idols

    8:58 with that you describe completely Ajr, they only make music "randomly", they don't give it a real meaning to a lot of stuff, dude I have 16 and even for me they say cringe things that make me want to live more to don't end up saying thing that are so stupid.
    And did you know a lot of bands started being really young? And they still end up writing about problems with a really interesting point of view.
    And I would like to mention that I was an Ajr fan, when I was 13, but I didn't listen that much to music in that time, as soon as I heard more stuff, I realize to all the flaws they got, and the world of music I was missing.
    Also, I really think the needle drop is more a way to discover music, rather than a way to know what to like, or how to feel about something. I usually listen to an album he reviews to know exactly what I feel about it, not to agree or disagree with him, I use him more like a guy that recommends music, since even when there is a "terrible" album there is always a reason to listen to it, even if it is to experience the flaws from it, I think it is a way to sail threw the world of music, while create your own ideas and stablishing what you like and don't.
    And I'm not saying you shouldn't like Ajr, I am just replying your arguments

    i remember disagreeing with that review too and id just listened to it shortly before watching and i really enjoyed it and i felt but couldnt explain how or why it felt unfair because i dont know that much about the stuff you all did. all in all i dont revisit the album but thats purely because i have much heavier interests, i just happen to also like light stuff, love midwestern emo guitar the vocals need work.

    I definitely understand what you’re trying to say. Sure, Fantano can be a little harsh, but again, a lot of what he said was pretty spot on. For example, when he’s talking about them making music for children, this might be a little harsh, but with progression through life, comes progression of ideas, and from listening to their discography, for me, they have not showed much progression in themes and messages, for a lot of them go back to their childhoods. Also, when Fantano says a lot of their music is over-produced, I think really what he’s trying to say is sometimes, there songs can get a little overly complex and unnecessary, blowing the song out of proportion a bit. But, when reviewing another piece of music, for the future, I think you should give some concessions to Fantano’s opinion or whoever or whatever your are reviewing for that matter. It kinda makes you come across as too much of a fanboy and not enough as an actual critic. But otherwise, I do understand your opinions and why you believe them.
