That's awesome. I think these small winches pull around 10amps under light load and 50amps stall at 12volts. A typical 18v/20v battery pack is going to put out 30amp at 18volts nominal. So more than enough amperes to handle the load. The higher voltage would be hard on the winch if you ran it for a really long time, but winching is a quick job. Nice idea.
Great idea for a project. Years ago i had a winch, smaller than this, but it had a similar set up. Instead of having the receiver mounted, it had a large hole that you could drop over the trailer ball. Pretty handy. It burned out and i couldn’t source parts but i kept the mount. I have a big 10k lb winch now. Overkill. But i only gave $150 for it.

Here's what I did, basically the same idea but instead of bolting the plate to the ball I cut a keyhole in the plate and it just drops over the ball. That way it's quick and you can leave your hitch in. Other than that I like it. Oh and I use a remote control winch, it makes like a little easier.

@@iancameron198 I've been switching over to rope. Why? Lighter and easier to move around. I mounted a square tube on the front of my ATV and back for the same reason. If you put a cut piece of nail or anything with a point in your mag drill chuck . You can center a hand tap perfect every time. We use to do that on huge paper machine base's cutting threads for anchor bolts.
I was impressed with your magnetic base drill. I used the earlier version "Bux Drill" in the 80's to drill out broken 1 1/8" studs sideways on 30" compressor cylinder bore.
Nice set up. I basically did the same thing with a worm drive hand winch I had. You can drive it with a cordless drill. No 50 lb battery to lug around. If I might point out, it looks like you might have set the fairlead too high. At 13:00 The fairlead looks like it is rubbing pretty hard against the rope. I see it is probably on the 3rd or forth wrap, but if you set the fairlead as low as possible so it just barely clears the cable on the first wrap, it should give you about 3 or 4 wraps before it starts rubbing hard on the other end. Also consider cutting off 1/3 of the rope and make a winch extender out of it. You won’t have to pull so much line out to get to the bottom wrap and if you have a long reach, you can always use your extender.
Well I finally built mine today. I've had one for several years to pull straight off of my 1 1/4" receiver. But my new car has a 2" receiver and although I bought an adapter, I liked your swivel idea. My new build fits the 2" receiver and swivels. GREAT IDEA, thanks
Not bad at all mate I get stuck out in the bush often very sandy and normally use my trucks onboard crane to get out of trouble.i can use my jump starter pack because quite often it would save a lot of time securing the winch to a tree instead of the back of my truck.a small two ton truck that just looks at loose rock or dry sand and gets bogged.well done matey you have saved me some shovelling
I like your setup! I've been using a Warn drill winch for about the same thing for a few years now and it gotten me out of several jams up in the woods. Great for pulling logs around too. However, at only 750lbs of pull I have to rig three snatch blocks in order to enough pull to get the job done at times. Three times the pull equals three times slower, which can make a lot more work out of a self-recovery. So, I've been thinking about putting together something like you did here. I'll probably go with a 3500lbs winch, which is still light enough to pack into the woods a little ways, or move it to the front of our rig and attach it to a recovery hook with a short tree saver type strap.
You sir, are a genius! I love the coke bottle idea, that was worth the price of admission to your picture show. Obviously the winch mount is another great idea. You should mass produce them and sell em online. Good job.

Neat setup. One idea or suggestion for your consideration: You could put a bar 90 degrees to the winch drum to give you the ability to direct the rope side to side. The bar probably needs to be about 3 feet long and be able to work either side so removable. It could be placed ahead of the drum or behind, whatever works for your mounting plate. In this way the drum will remain neatly wrapped all the time. If you use a round bar welded under the drum you could use a pipe on it as your bar and it would work either side. Another way might be to have a nut under the drum that you put a power bar or breaker bar on to turn the thing a bit. No more birds nests. Just a thought, maybe the issue isn't there with the longer plate changing the pivot point.
You're a savant! You did this way better than i would have lol. I visualized just a winch plate welded to a hitch, yours is slim and pivots. Fantastic job!
Used HF trailer coupler for 3" channel trailer tongue, drilled appropriate bolt pattern into top flat of coupler, mounted HF 2500# winch with matching fairlead mount. Be sure bolt pattern allows for clearance of the coupler handle. Control box mounted underneath the coupler, where the 3" channel would bolt. QD Anderson electrical connector, 12V battery in plastic battery box completes the system. Now can use winch from any 2" ball hitch. Rotates horizontally with some vertical alignment for very straight pulls. Use old 2" ball mount with chain around thread ball mount for chain to go around post, tree, etc for other applications. Easy Peasy. Use with HF dual hitch extender to hitch trailer to Jeep and also mount winch for loading trailer.
Years ago I made and still have my little winch on a 1/2 plate with a cut out like the old skeleton key opening so you just ste it over the ball and it slides to the narrower portion. Stays horizontal and rotates around the ball

Weld some flat stock to the hitch on both sides and on the end, drill multiple holes in it and put a couple holes that will line up in the winch plate. Then you can pin them to multiple angles so the winch isn’t trying to move.

Hi, Thanks for sharing! Nice Project. It is nice to be able to LISTEN!!!! and watch the SMART!!! people at work on UA-cam. The GREAT thing about this type of video is it gets people thinking about ways to make things better and more useful. Just like Henry Ford and the model T. Now look how far we have come with automotive technology. John
Nice! Just what simple work should be like. I also like the Evolution tools! We have a 14 Evo steel cutting chop saw. For those who do not know...Evolution is serious Japanese quality. We have both Evo and Eaton 14" blades...not cheap!
The lady at Pawn Mart use to call me when tools came in that she didn't know what they were. About a year ago a mag drill like yours came in. The model and such were torn off except for the brand name. She gave me first dibs on it but I told her I'd wait and see if it sat and the price came down more. It sat for a couple hours she said. I really messed up on that one. It had a set of saws from about 3/4" to around 2" with it. It was about half the weight of a Milwaukee mag drill. She has given me some seriously great deals on other stuff like small engine stuff from other stores that had sat until all tires were flat and gas had rotted , because I would go and get her stuff running again. But for truck and trailer frames those lite mag drills are the bomb.
Good video I got a 5000 lb winch that I can put in a receiver hitch and pull things one way but I like your idea there so my head is spinning right now thank you
I need one for my light weight off road situations. I have no need for a full scale winch set up but this would help from time to time. If you dont go into production I would be surprises.
There are winches available with an adapter that bolts to the winch and then slides over a hitch ball. I got this cheap plastic housing 2000lb, actually had a hand crank I think for back up. Got that at crappy tire (Canada) years back, I haven't actually used it too much (find I hook up a tow strap from a car to another car more often), but did drill some holes in the brush bar I had on my truck at the time, so I could pull from the front. Just two large bolts
Have you ever seen or heard about a wrench cable snapping? It does happen, and you don't want to be in its path. You can help to lower the danger by laying something over the cable, like a floor mat. Don't know how heavy the mat needs to be, but it will help.
A saw for lefties, like a worm-drive is actually perfect for right-handers. I have a Porter Cable left, and I can look right down to my saw tip without making like Quasimodo. I had 2 recievers on my E-150...I had planned on doing the same thing...until my engine blew.
Handy! As far as keeping the winch in line with the pull, it might also help to have the fairlead some distance from the drum. But you don’t really want to make it longer. Nice setup.
Love that Dog ! Think I'll build one close to yours, might add a stationary plate with holes on both plates to be able to lock in a direction. Like yours tho, food for thought.
My original plan in my head was to put location locking pin like you describe. The reason I didn't was because you are always going to be pulling against the fairlead in this situation and spooling the line on one side. This drives me crazy as you can only get around 4-5feet of pull before you have to unwind, rewind by hand and then pull another 5 feet.
When you double the cable through the snatch block and back to the winch (or other stable anchor point), it effectively doubles your load pulling power.
Good job. Those metal saws are cool. Used a milwaukee to cut a 6 by 4 three quarter thick angle. No heat. Smooth cut. Couldn't believe something modern worked that well.
You could have put two moderately strong springs on the mount to the safety chain loops. That would make it want to center at all times unless under a good load. Just a thought
It's a really great idea....when I was living in Wyoming I had a '79 Bronco that this device would have really been useful to me. Now I'm in Kansas..the whole state is flatter than a fart and, well, not so much for me now. Anyway, good video. P.S. I was just admiring the drill right before you explained what it was. Concerning the length....that's what they did when they circumcised me......Keep the Faith, Tom P.S.#3....I was in Rock Springs, WY......where are you in Utah? Really miss that country......sigh....
Awesome idea! Patent that thing before someone else does!!! My only concern would be a heavy pull at a high up or down angle. The plate would bend at the nut. Maybe up the plate to 3/8 or 1/2 inch. Bigger plate and a bigger winch for the heavy duty stuff. Some idiot out there would probably try to pull an 80 year old oak tree down with it 😂.
I Like your design for pulling from the side ..I had the HF cable and rope both rot on me ....I bought the tough grid 5,000 lb. stuff at almost a buck a foot
Hi Moe, This is really a good set up. I have not been doing much lately but when I start picking up tractors again I will be looking for a pickup truck currently using a trailer with a winch mounted to it. Just having a issue when I go looking for something in its new organized location LOL. But will have it done soon. Stay well, Joe Z
I think the word "organizing" should be rephrased to "hiding". There's been 2-3 times now where a spent an hour plus trying to find something that used to be easily accessible, now "organized" into a drawer.

Weld some flat stock to the hitch on both sides and on the end, drill multiple holes in it and put a couple holes that will line up in the winch plate. Then you can pin them to multiple angles so the winch isn’t trying to move.
Great video, idea, fabrication, and installation Moe, thank you!
May you, your family & friends & Ginger, be safe and healthy!
Hey Thanks.
Love your magnet trick to pick up chips and metal shavings.
Hey Thanks.
lol It's cute how your dog knows so many Commands! I have a Hokkaido he is about 5 years old (Rescued dog) but he knows Commands like crazy I never knew it til one day. Then I tried another and another. he knows a few.
That's awesome.
Hi,
Thanks for sharing!
John
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
Nice! Just what simple work should be like. I also like the Evolution tools! We have a 14 Evo steel cutting chop saw. For those who do not know...Evolution is serious Japanese quality. We have both Evo and Eaton 14" blades...not cheap!
That's brilliant ! Vid is well edited too with enough info and less me me me & blah blah blah. Thumbs up 👍
The lady at Pawn Mart use to call me when tools came in that she didn't know what they were.
It's great to have an in like this.
Good video I got a 5000 lb winch that I can put in a receiver hitch and pull things one way but I like your idea there so my head is spinning right now thank you
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. I need to upgrade this to a 5k or bigger.
This guy is pretty smart. I’ve seen a couple of videos. 👍🏽
Nice job man, makes a winch much more useful than in a fixed position.
Excellent idea, good video
I need one for my light weight off road situations. I have no need for a full scale winch set up but this would help from time to time.
If you dont go into production I would be surprises.
It has come in very handy.
My brother says you should make a line guide for it, like on a fishing reel; and that'll fix your pivot problems.
A saw for lefties, like a worm-drive is actually perfect for right-handers. I have a Porter Cable left, and I can look right down to my saw tip without making like Quasimodo. I had 2 recievers on my E-150...I had planned on doing the same thing...until my engine blew.
Good idea. They come in very handy. Sure beats a hand crank winch !!!
It really does for the long pulls.
Handy! As far as keeping the winch in line with the pull, it might also help to have the fairlead some distance from the drum. But you don’t really want to make it longer. Nice setup.
Good thought.
That’s a really handy little tool.
I was watching this again man have a live this long and not had something like this. Awesome video like normal.
Hey thanks

Noice video. In Australia we use soft strap around trees, so we don't damage them.
That magnet trick🤯🤯🤯....YOU OWN THE BEST DOG 😁👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👌👌
Hey Thanks.
Love that Dog !
Think I'll build one close to yours, might add a stationary plate with holes on both plates to be able to lock in a direction.
Like yours tho, food for thought.
That's how my swivel plow is on my Willys 👍🏼
My original plan in my head was to put location locking pin like you describe. The reason I didn't was because you are always going to be pulling against the fairlead in this situation and spooling the line on one side. This drives me crazy as you can only get around 4-5feet of pull before you have to unwind, rewind by hand and then pull another 5 feet.
When you double the cable through the snatch block and back to the winch (or other stable anchor point), it effectively doubles your load pulling power.
Yes, I use a snatch block every chance I get. It also allows more cable to be drawn out and increases the pulling force via the drum size.
Man, I need both that and the saw.....really some forward thinking went into those! I don't care what the girls at the pool hall say, you're a pretty bright fella! Concerning the length....that's what they did when they circumcised me......Keep the Faith, Tom P.S.#3....I was in Rock Springs, WY......where are you in Utah? Really miss that country......sigh....
Thanks I'm glad you liked it. I had a 78 Bronco years ago and miss it. I'm in Salt Lake.
I was born, raised and still living in Rock Springs. 5 generations in the county.
Very creative. I'm pretty inspired. And your dog is adorable.
Just built one. About to build my Dad one!
Love it! Thanks. Glad your dog has a master.
This channel and project farm remind me of a pair of half brothers
And sweet project cars and chrisfix are his first cousins
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
@@sixtyfiveford you have helped many of us and taught people how to repurpose and improve what we have
I find it cool you have kept the expedition and do pickup size work with it.
It's been a great vehicle and works hard.
Great Idea. Seems like a lot of people are going with the rope over the cable now.
Yeah, I'm not sure if I'm sold on it yet.
Pretty interesting Idea. I think it needs further refinement, but still a cool quick build.
Dude that is very versatile , you should think about marketing that. I am gonna make one a put a 5,000 pound winch on it.
Thanks. I'm glad you liked it.
I Like your design for pulling from the side ..I had the HF cable and rope both rot on me ....I bought the tough grid 5,000 lb. stuff at almost a buck a foot
I read that these ropes hate UV sun light and will fall apart.
Hi Moe, This is really a good set up. I have not been doing much lately but when I start picking up tractors again I will be looking for a pickup truck currently using a trailer with a winch mounted to it. I noticed in the last series of videos how you reorganized your shop, looks great. Now that I am home I am doing a clean out & reorganizing of my garage.
@@sixtyfiveford LOL, I am not finished with mine but have the same problem.
I love those little winches Moe , They work great ! ENJOYED
They're more useful than I thought. I got this one as a birthday gift from the inlaws 10+ years ago and it just sat. I pulled it out 3-4 years ago and put the chain on it to pull a trailer in my yard via a tree.
The ending was the best!!!! Very clever video. Good job.
Thanks Man.
This guy is a genius!
awesome! thanks for being realistic and down to earth.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
You're really smart. That's outside the box thinking at it's best. Great video. I'm gonna build one.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
Nice video. Thanks for providing it to us. I am going to make one. I use the chain method on my hitch now and it works but your method works better..
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
