When trying to get the rope in the hole, use heat shrink on the part you cut and about 10 inches further than hole. That way it will prevent it from bunching up when you try to push it through. It will also keep it from unraveling. Then take electrical tape and wrap it a few times and make a tail. Push the tail through the hole first and grab on to that and then use that to pull the cable through. Can also use the tape in place of the heat shrink. Tape it tight or shrink it with a tight ratio and it will compress the cable as well and help feeding it trough the hole. Can also bore out the hole a tiny bit and make it bigger to fit the cable, just use a little bit longer set screw. It all else fails you can do exactly what you said about making the hook loop and splice in your own small loop to use the button head on the side of the spool.

Old sailor here. Been using soft shackles on boats for years under heavy load. They are the best. You can easily make your own for super cheap instead of wasting money on store bought shackles. I learned how to make em with a couple quick UA-cam videos. They’ll change your life.
I just replaced my 20 year old mile marker with the new zxr 12k. I love these badlands winches, I have one on my cherokee and it has never given me a second of trouble.
Definitely love my badlands winch it does very good for the price and I’m definitely going to get synthetic rope when I can but for now still putting weighted bags on the cable and hope u feel better soon
There are some really affordable winch lines to be had out there (chi-neema instead of dyneema) The yankum winch line is not cheap compared to those but Id wager its alot better. their kinetic ropes are pretty affordable too. Thanks!
Cant go wrong with this setup man! Any rope will work with this and I think that was awesome on their part for not designing it to where you "have" to run their rope. I went that route but not neccesary at all, and that says something about Yankum as a company. And Nate who helped design it, they just wanted to innovate and they delivered👊
I've seen people have issues with certain types of synthetic pull straps as well. I do like the idea of using the synthetic rope, but only after you've used the steel cable enough to start causing issues which you can cause damage to one quite quickly if you are not careful how it's applied.
I have had three Badlands winches. Each was replaced with a heavier unit, no problems with them. Sold one to a friend and he used the heck out if it, never failed to get him out. Have two winches on my RZR now so I can go either way whether my friends get stuck behind or in front of me.😊seem to be good units from my experience anyway.

LOL, at 10:38 you explain how you can't push a rope; one of my favorite sayings. I'd wrap some wire or strong string around it and pull it through. Thanks for making the video man. Your attention to details like smoothing the rough spots and which way to roll on the cable are great. Personally, I wouldn't have trimmed the metal behind the fairlead.

It definitely wears out faster especially if you let it rub on stuff but there are less expensive lines to be had than the one I used. I can handle me getting hurt but I would never get over it if my cable snapped and hurt or killed someone so I made the switch

Awesome job! I'm really thinking of getting another YJ, there is one that's been sitting for year near me and I think it's the perfect Jeep to turn into a monster rig.
An easy way to get springs like that off, is to use some small diameter rope, like 550 para cord. Make a loop about 12". Hook one end of loop to the wire spring and pull it off what ever it is hooked to. You have plenty of control and it won't pop off unless you let go too quickly. This works for brakes springs and the like as well. You can use heat shrink tubing to help on ends of ropes too.

smart move to get rid of the metal and use Dyneema rope instead, smart too to check the drum for any rough surface. Check out the Plasma Lock - allows friction-based mounting of rope to the drum with no tools, no set-screw, no small holes to fight - and no slipping off, if the rope is completely winched out. BTW: I would never want to get rid of the roller fairlead - if you want/need to winch backwards/sideways, a roller fairlead is unmatched !
rollers have their uses but I watched a synthetic line get shredded in one that slid to the corner and got pinched between the roller and the bracket. the smooth edge on this allows for pretty much any angle pull but it is less useful for stuff like going under your own rig and such. If im ever in that situation again Ill find a way to make it work with snatch ring
I havent switched my trailer winch over till I can figure out a way to not tear up the rope on the back of trailer, for now that one stays cable. otherwise I agree and I was a holdout for cable for awhile due to cost
First rule of pulling with a cable, especially with a hook or shackle. PUT A Blanket, rug, designed pad; on your cable a 1/4 of the way back from your hook and it will catch and drop the end, rather than letting it come flying back a you. Better to use synthetic rope for sure though.
Yeah, using a damper is a great idea on a steel cable but it’s not a guarantee that part of it still isn’t gonna whip someone. That end in my experience only 10% of the time do people actually use one.
I have a harbor fright badland zxr 12000 pound winch and it works great and on my badland zxr 12000 pound winch has winch cable witch I like a lot more than synthetic rope
I used to be the same way but at the end of the day I’d rather not die from a metal winch line snapping. The only real downfall to the synthetic line is that it wears out faster
I purchased the 9k Badlands for my Montero Sport project. Nothing but great reviews on all these winches. It is nothing more than an insurance policy. It's there,, but hope I don't need it. I have had my 12,000 harbor freight winch for 3 years now and I abuse it almost daily pulling logs out the woods , and big ones , as well as pulling my 92 f-150 out of holes I think I can get thru lol , and or up mountain hills it can't climb even though I have lockers , it's a very reliable winch in my mind, I'd like to save and get the apex one but , if this thing keeps kicking for another 5 years I will be using it !
Well the apex winch is like $600 right? so the fairlead is about $265 (less with my code haha) and you can get a cheaper winch line for about 100-150 and come in way under that. I love the yankum stuff, but the winch line itself is a premium $ for sure. I want to start supporting more American made products, especially offroad related companies, so to me it was worth it. still beats paying 2 grand for a warn winch that might fail just the same as any other *cough zeon cough*

When I fish the synthetic rope through that hole in the barrel first clamp the end of the rope in the vice and Pull It skinny and tape it down really small with electrical tape really tight and that will compress all the Rope for the first few inches then you can push it through the whole easy
Keep in mind your block can sling toward you in that scenario if there is a failure on that end. There's no perfect winch setup but there's ways to make it safer for sure. Sounds like you use your head, and thats step one for sure! Thanks for checking out the video friend
Nice upgrade to that winch. Check out the Redwinch Plasma to mount the end of the rope to the drum. It's absolutely worth it. It also protect you from removing to much rope from the drum when freespooling it out. You will allways keep your 8 wraps of rope on the drum.

Bubba Ropes “The Grabber” is an alternative product. It even has some 3M VHB to help prevent unraveling when initially adding the rope. I used one when replacing the cheap unsheathed Hercules rope on my cheap Adventure Kings Domin8r Xtreme with a much better quality double-sheathed Maxtrax MXTSWR Static Winch Rope.
Take a very close look at a warn evo vs a badlands apex. There's only about a $200 price difference. I've compared them side by side and can see at least a dozen things the harbor freight has cut corners on compared to the warn. That's not the mention a warn has a lifetime warranty on mechanical and 7 years on electrical. When you are doing something that has several different avenues of being dangerous I'd prefer not to cut corners.
The thing is, I have seen so so many warns fail, and still havent witnessed one of these badlands fail. Also this is a $300 winch when you catch a sale (or coupon back in the day), nearly half the cost of the apex in your comparison. The only Warn Ill ever run is the 8274

I almost got a fairlead like that, but my winch is hidden. If I screw up, I will be fishing the rope out from behind the fairlead. I went with a lay flat metel hook that I can easily remove.
I wouldn’t have used the set screw. Order the loop that you talked about earlier in the vid. Granted you must leave 3 or 4 wraps on the winch at all times but that’s just me.
Well that was my claim, not theirs. Removing every ounce of steel from winch rigging is inherently safer. Made in the USA products are never going to be as cheap as chinese junk, but they sure are better.
the hole is sleeved (unless the drum is solid clean thru, im not sure) so I didnt want to risk drilling too big and going thru the wall on the sleeve if that makes sense
Had a Badland winch Triple blocked at Paul and Trina pull over a stump wag dog out and end up frying the motor cuz the safety kicked off and on a couple times couple days later went work
I love synthetic rope on a winch, I think it’s great it weighs less and you don’t have any chance to get splinters from the metal in your hand. But I’ll stick to my steel shackle… I’m not saying I wouldn’t carry a couple of soft shackles as a back up or for redundancy but A real forged rated shackle is not at all a trailer ball, and if you have one properly put into the system attached to the frame of the vehicle that you’re pulling out I don’t think it’s the shackle that’s going to break. Take a look at this video here and see where they test shackle and a soft shackle both at a real testing lab that are the same size as the normal tow loops on the front of like a Ford pick up truck or a Dodge pick up truck. I think this jacket would be a little stronger than the tow loops on a pickup, But it broke out over 32,000 KG which is ridiculous… Not only could your toe vehicle not apply that kind of force but if it could it would snatch the vehicle being towed in half unless it was some sort of giant 18 wheeler or a tank. And if you bump it up from a 3/4” shackle to a 1” shackle which isn’t that much bigger now you’re talking about breaking strength most likely in the 60 or 70,000 KG range. Just overkill. What I would suggest would be to take a span set or a short nylon sling and loop it around the frame and through the shackle. Bow shackles are no doubt strong and I still use them on my bumper. i usually connect my kinetic rope or strap to the bow shackle with a soft shackle just to avoid unscrewing it haha. at the end of my winch line i just use the soft shackle or if im winching another rig, i can connect to whatever they have. Lets be real, the shackles are stronger than the d ring they are connected to on most chinese or poorly built bumpers. shackles are essentially double shear and i fully trust them, but I still am not a fan of metal hooks
How does UV affect the rope? I always shake my head when I see an exposed spare tire that's all cracked and jacked up because a cover doesn't look cool.
I would suggest painting the last few feet of your rope red, at least one hole tube, thus giving you a visual of full strength on your line prior to running out of length on your rope. Just a safety issue that will save you a heartbreak later.
I typically always check the drum if I have a bunch pulled out, and if its close I do have a winch extension and other straps/rigging I can use to extend the line so that theres enough on the drum. Too many people ignore this and think the tiny bolt is what holds the line but it is in fact just friction.
If people would just use the snatch blocks it would save alot of injuries and damages. I use heavy rubber back commercial carpet mats over the cable for a damper and they double for something to lay on.
Some shrink tubing might be nice on that thinner part of the rope you fed through the drum. By the way you cinematography is excellent man. Camera angles on point. teach the rest of the guys would ya. Ha' No shaky shit.
I honestly used to take more time on multiple angles and shots than I do lately. It all depends on if it’s a planned video or if I’m just building something and winging it. If I know what I’m doing before I do it then I can plan for it😂 if you watch many of my build videos you will see that I’m just kind of winging it as I go and there’s usually only one camera rolling. I suppose you could, not sure if I would trust it to do much. Pretty sure a bowline just gets tighter under pressure if you’re pulling on the line itself but if you put a load in the loop I’m not sure.
How is that winch holding up? I'm trying to decide on a winch. Would like a 15k or 16.5k but I can't find an affordable one. Truck weighs around 5,500 so 12k should be alright.
its holding up pretty good, getting a little noisy. its been underwater and out in alot of storms and bad conditions, Pretty sure I need to pop it open and get fresh grease in there. but still never not worked in the 4ish years ive had it
It sure is. I deleted the control box, put the solenoid on the inside of the fenderwell and put the plug there. I have the solenoid hard wired into the cab so the only time the remote comes out is if I need a person outside to run the winch. Some people have commented and said its a terrible place for it, but it works for me. this jeep only sees warm sunny days on the street so its not like its constantly exposed to rain spray and all that
It’s one of those “to each their own” things. There’s lots of stuff people put on their jeeps that I think is a total waste of money. But hey it’s their jeep😅 I’m a function over form type this fairlead happens to be both
The rated duty cycle is 5% (or 45 seconds at MAX rated load, then 14 minutes cooldown.) Me any everyone else under the sun has far exceeded that with no issue. Keep in mind what you are pulling, how steep, etc how much the winch is in "grunt mode"

My rope didn’t have a metal eye, I would try a sawzall or cutoff wheel and go slow. Or You can just cut the last 2” of rope off and mount it like how my rope came as well

So I have a badlands wench on my Jeep the only bad thing I have to say is free spool it doesn't spool as easy as I'd like ... And the electoral components that attach to the black box aren't water proofed so .... I had a bad experience with when I turn the jeep on the rumble of the engine turns on the wench so needless to say keep yours in free spool untill you need it and disconnect the remote panels and remotes when no in use
Interesting. I pulled the guts out of the black box and mounted under the hood so it stays mostly dry. Consider taking the end caps off the winch and greasing the gears if the free spool is tough. May have got water or grit in there
You should also purchase a harbor junk moving blanket to drape over the cable when wnching. It acts as a dampner and won't let the cable whip back. Good vid brah
My apex yards my f250 super duty just fine. It is set up on a reciever cradle so I can use it front and rear and so far it has done just fine and I have done some pretty hard pulls starting with my 80 ft synthetic line pulled out 75 ft

Im poor and have lived my whole life on generic everything and even I sprung for it. If you like it, get it and if you dont, then dont. I was skeptical at first also but glad I got it
You can rubber band it to your grill, you can do anything. hell you can just leave it hanging but it’s not gonna look as good and keep it quite as protected. It sure looks better than goofy ass thimbals or giant aluminum hooks

Badlands winches are ok for occasional medium duty use. Badlands are the only brand I’ve seen multiple have catastrophic failures. Not motors but the frame breaking or it ripping itself in two. Even the apex ones. Not really cool.
Always read up on the products you're using. Typical synthetic winch rope does not retain energy like a NAVY nylon mooring line. Synthetic winch rope just drops when it snaps. But like anything else, always side with caution.
There is a technique to attach to drum with synthetic rope. Difficult to describe. Maybe google it. Nothing worse when your rope comes off the drum especially when your on a hill and your wondering why your rolling back on a dead winch
I have 4 12,000 lb Badlands winches. I've had zero problems, even though I've consistently used my winches contrary to the instructions. I will use them always.
I said it in the video. 7/16x75’ Most jeeps use 3/8 rope but I stepped up a size since I wheel with a lot of full size trucks I figured I’d like to have a stronger rope for when I recover other people
If you were talking about the actual kinetic rope that one’s a 7/8” rope. Pretty sure it’s a 20 foot long but they sell them in 30 foot also. Honestly having a brain fart and I don’t even remember how long it is for sure
I guess they seem fine to me but I’ve never had a super fast winch. I’ve had three Harbor freight winches of different models and a mile marker 8000 and the ZXR that I have now is the fastest out of those four
@@FlawedOffroad I'm in a jeep club, we all have a nice mix across the manufacturers. A couple got “starter” winches from harbor freight, and they run about 20-30% slower than the other major manufacturing companies. Note, nothing wrong with them, several have gone through several different owners.

Nice lesson about winch lines. I worked for a road department where a tow chain broke and almost killed the truck driver. Better safe than sorry!

Only problem i had was the limiter relay, i replaced with a resetable limiter 200 amp. Worked great.
Havent had that issue but I did buy one of those to use as an on/off switch to power my trailer winch, havent wired any of it up yet
An easy way to get springs like that off, is to use some small diameter rope, like 550 para cord. Make a loop about 12". Hook one end of loop to the wire spring and pull it off what ever it is hooked to. You have plenty of control and it won't pop off unless you let go too quickly. This works for brakes springs and the like as well. You can use heat shrink tubing to help on ends of ropes too.

smart move to get rid of the metal and use Dyneema rope instead, smart too to check the drum for any rough surface.
Check out the Plasma Lock - allows friction-based mounting of rope to the drum with no tools, no set-screw, no small holes to fight - and no slipping off, if the rope is completely winched out.
BTW: I would never want to get rid of the roller fairlead - if you want/need to winch backwards/sideways, a roller fairlead is unmatched !
rollers have their uses but I watched a synthetic line get shredded in one that slid to the corner and got pinched between the roller and the bracket. the smooth edge on this allows for pretty much any angle pull but it is less useful for stuff like going under your own rig and such. If im ever in that situation again Ill find a way to make it work with snatch ring
Between snapping lines, and to many frayed cables tearing up my hands I'll never regret switching over to synthetic ropes on all my winches
I havent switched my trailer winch over till I can figure out a way to not tear up the rope on the back of trailer, for now that one stays cable. otherwise I agree and I was a holdout for cable for awhile due to cost

I use a vise grip for springs they won't fly anywhere when you have them snapped in there
First rule of pulling with a cable, especially with a hook or shackle. PUT A Blanket, rug, designed pad; on your cable a 1/4 of the way back from your hook and it will catch and drop the end, rather than letting it come flying back a you. Better to use synthetic rope for sure though.

Snapped cables is why you should hang a blanket over the cable when you are using it so it won't snap back and hurt or kill someone.
Yeah, using a damper is a great idea on a steel cable but it’s not a guarantee that part of it still isn’t gonna whip someone. That end in my experience only 10% of the time do people actually use one.
I have a harbor fright badland zxr 12000 pound winch and it works great and on my badland zxr 12000 pound winch has winch cable witch I like a lot more than synthetic rope
I used to be the same way but at the end of the day I’d rather not die from a metal winch line snapping. The only real downfall to the synthetic line is that it wears out faster

Nothing but great reviews on all these winches. It is nothing more than an insurance policy. It's there,, but hope I don't need it.

I have had my 12,000 harbor freight winch for 3 years now and I abuse it almost daily pulling logs out the woods , and big ones , as well as pulling my 92 f-150 out of holes I think I can get thru lol , and or up mountain hills it can't climb even though I have lockers , it's a very reliable winch in my mind, I'd like to save and get the apex one but , if this thing keeps kicking for another 5 years I will be using it !

Well the apex winch is like $600 right? so the fairlead is about $265 (less with my code haha) and you can get a cheaper winch line for about 100-150 and come in way under that. I love the yankum stuff, but the winch line itself is a premium $ for sure. I want to start supporting more American made products, especially offroad related companies, so to me it was worth it. still beats paying 2 grand for a warn winch that might fail just the same as any other *cough zeon cough*

When I fish the synthetic rope through that hole in the barrel first clamp the end of the rope in the vice and Pull It skinny and tape it down really small with electrical tape really tight and that will compress all the Rope for the first few inches then you can push it through the whole easy
honestly it may take longer to pull but I always use snatch block and double my line pull so the hook will sling away from jeep
Keep in mind your block can sling toward you in that scenario if there is a failure on that end. There's no perfect winch setup but there's ways to make it safer for sure. Sounds like you use your head, and thats step one for sure! Thanks for checking out the video friend

Nice upgrade to that winch. Check out the Redwinch Plasma to mount the end of the rope to the drum. It's absolutely worth it. It also protect you from removing to much rope from the drum when freespooling it out. You will allways keep your 8 wraps of rope on the drum.

Bubba Ropes “The Grabber” is an alternative product.
It even has some 3M VHB to help prevent unraveling when initially adding the rope.
I used one when replacing the cheap unsheathed Hercules rope on my cheap Adventure Kings Domin8r Xtreme with a much better quality double-sheathed Maxtrax MXTSWR Static Winch Rope.
Take a very close look at a warn evo vs a badlands apex. There's only about a $200 price difference. I've compared them side by side and can see at least a dozen things the harbor freight has cut corners on compared to the warn. That's not the mention a warn has a lifetime warranty on mechanical and 7 years on electrical. When you are doing something that has several different avenues of being dangerous I'd prefer not to cut corners.
The thing is, I have seen so so many warns fail, and still havent witnessed one of these badlands fail. Also this is a $300 winch when you catch a sale (or coupon back in the day), nearly half the cost of the apex in your comparison. The only Warn Ill ever run is the 8274
Use brake spring pliers to safely remove your springs.
Or make a hook out of some heavy wire and a short piece of wood.

Its not the cheapeast fairlead on the market but it is the coolest/best one and the most useful one

I almost got a fairlead like that, but my winch is hidden. If I screw up, I will be fishing the rope out from behind the fairlead. I went with a lay flat metel hook that I can easily remove.

My super winch died iv seen matt off road use them harber freight so I got a 12000 lb apex I up grade from a 8 1/2 to 12000

Well that was my claim, not theirs. Removing every ounce of steel from winch rigging is inherently safer. Made in the USA products are never going to be as cheap as chinese junk, but they sure are better.

the hole is sleeved (unless the drum is solid clean thru, im not sure) so I didnt want to risk drilling too big and going thru the wall on the sleeve if that makes sense

i keep ssein guys load it OVER the drum.....n those drum holes look a bit sharp for rope but if u dont pull too far out your safe. this is cool tho
I love synthetic rope on a winch, I think it’s great it weighs less and you don’t have any chance to get splinters from the metal in your hand. But I’ll stick to my steel shackle… I’m not saying I wouldn’t carry a couple of soft shackles as a back up or for redundancy but A real forged rated shackle is not at all a trailer ball, and if you have one properly put into the system attached to the frame of the vehicle that you’re pulling out I don’t think it’s the shackle that’s going to break.
Take a look at this video here and see where they test shackle and a soft shackle both at a real testing lab that are the same size as the normal tow loops on the front of like a Ford pick up truck or a Dodge pick up truck.
I think this jacket would be a little stronger than the tow loops on a pickup, But it broke out over 32,000 KG which is ridiculous… Not only could your toe vehicle not apply that kind of force but if it could it would snatch the vehicle being towed in half unless it was some sort of giant 18 wheeler or a tank.
And if you bump it up from a 3/4” shackle to a 1” shackle which isn’t that much bigger now you’re talking about breaking strength most likely in the 60 or 70,000 KG range. Just overkill.
What I would suggest would be to take a span set or a short nylon sling and loop it around the frame and through the shackle. That way it acts as a safety in case for some reason that factory tow loop were to break off that nylon sling would catch it before it came flying.

Bow shackles are no doubt strong and I still use them on my bumper. i usually connect my kinetic rope or strap to the bow shackle with a soft shackle just to avoid unscrewing it haha. at the end of my winch line i just use the soft shackle or if im winching another rig, i can connect to whatever they have. Lets be real, the shackles are stronger than the d ring they are connected to on most chinese or poorly built bumpers. shackles are essentially double shear and i fully trust them, but I still am not a fan of metal hooks
How does UV affect the rope? I always shake my head when I see an exposed spare tire that's all cracked and jacked up because a cover doesn't look cool.
It definitely wears on them. I’ve been debating some sort of a winch cover, but mine mostly lives in a garage.
I would suggest painting the last few feet of your rope red, at least one hole tube, thus giving you a visual of full strength on your line prior to running out of length on your rope. Just a safety issue that will save you a heartbreak later.
I typically always check the drum if I have a bunch pulled out, and if its close I do have a winch extension and other straps/rigging I can use to extend the line so that theres enough on the drum. Too many people ignore this and think the tiny bolt is what holds the line but it is in fact just friction.
If people would just use the snatch blocks it would save alot of injuries and damages. I use heavy rubber back commercial carpet mats over the cable for a damper and they double for something to lay on.
Some shrink tubing might be nice on that thinner part of the rope you fed through the drum. By the way you cinematography is excellent man. Camera angles on point. teach the rest of the guys would ya. Ha' No shaky shit.
I honestly used to take more time on multiple angles and shots than I do lately. It all depends on if it’s a planned video or if I’m just building something and winging it. If I know what I’m doing before I do it then I can plan for it😂 if you watch many of my build videos you will see that I’m just kind of winging it as I go and there’s usually only one camera rolling. Can you tie a bow line on synthetic wich line if you need to?
I suppose you could, not sure if I would trust it to do much. Pretty sure a bowline just gets tighter under pressure if you’re pulling on the line itself but if you put a load in the loop I’m not sure.
How is that winch holding up? I'm trying to decide on a winch. Would like a 15k or 16.5k but I can't find an affordable one. Truck weighs around 5,500 so 12k should be alright.
its holding up pretty good, getting a little noisy. its been underwater and out in alot of storms and bad conditions, Pretty sure I need to pop it open and get fresh grease in there. but still never not worked in the 4ish years ive had it
Use another spring to install or remove a spring… much easier.
Is your winch plug-in the fender well
It sure is. I deleted the control box, put the solenoid on the inside of the fenderwell and put the plug there. I have the solenoid hard wired into the cab so the only time the remote comes out is if I need a person outside to run the winch. Some people have commented and said its a terrible place for it, but it works for me. this jeep only sees warm sunny days on the street so its not like its constantly exposed to rain spray and all that

You can hook to dang near anything with a soft shackle. Especially in the offroad application that I’m using it in

I got rid of the box and mounted the solenoid under the hood, and I ran the remote plug through the inner fender

How long can you run that wench before you have to let it cool down ?
The rated duty cycle is 5% (or 45 seconds at MAX rated load, then 14 minutes cooldown.) Me any everyone else under the sun has far exceeded that with no issue. Keep in mind what you are pulling, how steep, etc how much the winch is in "grunt mode"
What’s the difference between the roller and the solid fairlead? I currently have the roller but have a couple solid ones laying around.
Generally, the rollers are for cable and the solid ones are for synthetic rope

How did you remove the metal eye from the end of the line without damaging it?
My rope didn’t have a metal eye, I would try a sawzall or cutoff wheel and go slow. Or You can just cut the last 2” of rope off and mount it like how my rope came as well

I think the drum is hollow, and the hole is sleeved so I wouldn’t try. I used 1 size up winch line most ppl use 3/8, I used 7/16
So I have a badlands wench on my Jeep the only bad thing I have to say is free spool it doesn't spool as easy as I'd like ... And the electoral components that attach to the black box aren't water proofed so .... I had a bad experience with when I turn the jeep on the rumble of the engine turns on the wench so needless to say keep yours in free spool untill you need it and disconnect the remote panels and remotes when no in use
Interesting. I pulled the guts out of the black box and mounted under the hood so it stays mostly dry. Consider taking the end caps off the winch and greasing the gears if the free spool is tough. May have got water or grit in there
You should also purchase a harbor junk moving blanket to drape over the cable when wnching. It acts as a dampner and won't let the cable whip back. Good vid brah
I have never seen a Yankum rope fail.
My apex yards my f250 super duty just fine. It is set up on a reciever cradle so I can use it front and rear and so far it has done just fine and I have done some pretty hard pulls starting with my 80 ft synthetic line pulled out 75 ft

Look at what people are charging for those fancy ultra hooks and all that. Its pricy but just like anything else in life theres choices and you gotta spend to get the good stuff. Im poor and have lived my whole life on generic everything and even I sprung for it. If you like it, get it and if you dont, then dont. I was skeptical at first also but glad I got it

You can also just bolt an aluminum or steel small pulley to the bumper and save $260 and wrap your cable end there.
You can rubber band it to your grill, you can do anything. hell you can just leave it hanging but it’s not gonna look as good and keep it quite as protected. It sure looks better than goofy ass thimbals or giant aluminum hooks

I'm sure the peeps that purchased their $400 multi purpose front hook that lays flat when pulled in will have a whole new opinion too. But I gotta say, I saw a video of when they came up with this fairlead and I do like it. Now if someone can make a fairlead look like stretch armstrong is holding the end, that'd be cool.
Badlands winches are ok for occasional medium duty use. Badlands are the only brand I’ve seen multiple have catastrophic failures. Not motors but the frame breaking or it ripping itself in two. Even the apex ones. Not really cool.
I have never seen a failure like that. I would love to see one if anyone caught that on video
Check out the navy training films on synthetic line snap back. I'm not sure if the new Kevlar stuff is as bad.

Always read up on the products you're using.
Typical synthetic winch rope does not retain energy like a NAVY nylon mooring line.
Synthetic winch rope just drops when it snaps.
But like anything else, always side with caution.
There is a technique to attach to drum with synthetic rope. Difficult to describe. Maybe google it. Nothing worse when your rope comes off the drum especially when your on a hill and your wondering why your rolling back on a dead winch
I have 4 12,000 lb Badlands winches. I've had zero problems, even though I've consistently used my winches contrary to the instructions. I will use them always.
They work great!

If you were talking about the actual kinetic rope that one’s a 7/8” rope. Pretty sure it’s a 20 foot long but they sell them in 30 foot also. Honestly having a brain fart and I don’t even remember how long it is for sure

the only issue with the HB winches, are that they are very slow...
I guess they seem fine to me but I’ve never had a super fast winch. I’ve had three Harbor freight winches of different models and a mile marker 8000 and the ZXR that I have now is the fastest out of those four
@@FlawedOffroad I'm in a jeep club, we all have a nice mix across the manufacturers. A couple got “starter” winches from harbor freight, and they run about 20-30% slower than the other major manufacturing companies.
Note, nothing wrong with them, several have gone through several different owners.
If I had it my way id have a warn 8274 on the jeep, its really the only warn winch I like. but they are hard to find and pricy(and bulky)
