Another impressive project. Love the upgrades. Another upgrade you might want to consider: The tube that you have in your hand at 2:10. Drill straight through that, in the middle of the length. Making 4 small holes in the middle. Now take the bolt that goes through it. Starting at the head, drill the center of that bolt. Maybe 1/3 to 1/2 the way down the length. Use a smaller bit, to maintain integrity of the bolt. Doesn't take much. Drill an 'exit' hole, at the end of where you stopped drilling. Now, drill a larger hole at the head, and tap that for a grease fitting. When you put it back together, just pump grease in, until you see it coming out both ends. Check it again, a couple times after the first few uses. Then keep it maintained from that point on. You can add a dab of grease to the screw, each time you do this.
You brought up the fact that a winch changes power {mechanical advantage/levarage} based on how much line you have out...I never thought about it but you are absolutley right. I learned something today...... thanks.
bought one of these today. MUCH tighter than shown in this video. I was fully prepared to make the mods shown: shim the drum, move the worm, add washers, etc but see no need. Maybe tolerances vary or quality has improved but either way I'm very pleased. Gonna swap on a longer cable and build a shingle hoist for roofing.
Awesome build ,great idea for the shim. This conversion to drill power is soooo much faster, cool! . A bit of grease on the drive spiral will help even more . Love your channel
Awesome man! I love this kinda stuff! legit makers who actually have any idea of wth they're doing are a dying breed! Respect to you good sir! I'm glad i stumbled upon your channel!
I'm looking for something to assist with moving firewood logs and have watched several portable winch videos. You're the first presenter who seems to have a clue and then some. Nice job.
You are correct about doubling the mechanical advantage by doubling the line, but your anchor point needs to be rated for the full weight or load, and you are adding additional stress to an already marginal design. Not saying it won't do it, just don't think that you are reducing the forces on the winch or anchor point
I had been thinking a lot about a small portable, yet powered winch, and then you posted this! I made myself one using your idea, but my gear mesh was a lot better than the one you have, so I didn't need to change it. Instead of making a bushing (shim?) for the drum I drilled it and the frame out to 1/2" and put a grade five bolt through it. I also made a hook on the top of my engine hoist and a pulley on the end of the boom so I can use it on there. Great idea, keep them coming!
If you want to max out the range of that engine hoist, weld two pieces of flat bar to the end of the boom and bolt a pulley between them. Then mount your winch on the rear of the boom. That lets you reach deep into any engine bay with the boom fully extended to clear radiator braces etc.
I got one of these to move my old truck. I made a bracket with chain to bolt to the hub bolt but after trying it the worm gear moved off it's pin and wouldn't work so I had to take it apart to put a washer in there to take the play up. I also welded nuts on the shaft too. The gear mesh wasn't bad on mine so I didn't change that but found the bolts holding it are m8 1.25 which is the same as handles for angle grinders so I replaced a bolt with a grinder handle which really helps to hold it while using it.
Very cool stuff!! I would use this to lift logs with our pickup truck crane and then I wouldn't need a battery for the 12v winch just a drill battery. Once I saw the slop in the winch, I knew you were going to use a piece of copper to fix that. Lol. Great video!!
sixtyfiveford No problem. I didn't know you watched my videos. That's an honor for me to have you watching. I really like that chinese chainsaw. Still can't believe what I've been able to do with it.
Great video. I have one of these winches on my auger stand to lift my auger up and down. I need to spin it faster and I have wanted to electrify the operation. Thank you
I like the idea. I've been trying to figure out how to get a ford starter to be the motor on a very similar winch you have there. Here's what I did with my come-alongs.....I removed the steel cable and the pulleys. Then I wound new cable just like a winch. Now my come-alongs have 30 feet of use. You bet they pull full-size trucks onto my trailer. Plus they do double duty to strap down the vehicle to the trailer.
I like the worm drive. I used the gear drive type to build a shingle elevator. Same thing. Lots of slop and soft gears. Wouldn't stand up long, but I only needed it for my roof. Since then I've decided to go with a metal roof since I can buy it as I can afford it.
I have one exactly like this mounted to the wall in my shop for raising and lowering my staircase up to the loft. Works like a charm. I simply added a few snatch blocks to change the direction of the cable. I am not so sure I would trust what they say it's capacity is with my life though.....
That's a handy tool to have. Nice job making it better than the original design, taking the slop out of it but I'm more impressed with the trailer hitch on an old Ford Escort!
Yeah, you like the full size truck hitch I put on on my wife's old car. Years ago I towed quit a bit of stuff with it and it handled great. Got quit a few looks.
Thank you Sir. At last a good idea to lower and pull boat on rough ramps. I don’t have 4x4 car and sometimes its a nightmare to pull boat out on steep ramps. Will make this video as my guideline. Thank You for sharing. Nuno from Portugal Europe ;)
That's where the term - better than new comes in. That would of had a short life the way it came out of the box. A very useful piece now with all the creative design changes.
I want one. I just worked for an hour pulling a disabled harley under the foof with a come a long wondering how I could hook a drill motor to it. The rig you built is way better. You could make um and sell um. Thank you for showing china what for!!!
I have the USA winch, but got it cheaper than amazon, bought at McMaster Carr. I have used it for a Draw Bench power unit, had no issues. You know, it is 900 LBS with full drum and 2000 lbs with most the line out. I have only about 15 feet of line on mine, and so, I max it out. I have been using comealongs in the yard. I do have one of those outdoor drill winches, but the overlimit clutch slips all the time, kind of useless unless you only load it less than 500 lbs. I think I will get another McMaster winch and make a yard winch out of it. FYI, one does not need to mod the winch from McMaster, the tolerances are close enough already.
5*C= 40*F here and sunny today, mountains of snow and you don't have to dress up with a snowmobile suit to go out and enjoy it, and it is supposed to go up to around 45*F with rain on Sunday. Global warming gives us temps like that, years ago temps stayed below freezing during all of Feb.
I just recently got a 2 ton version with a brake. I'm suspicious on the teeth only meshed in roughly half way. It definitely needs to be tighter tolerance. I'm glad saw your vid. Cheers from Australia 🙂👍👍👍. So cheap to buy it's definitely worth modifying! I made my 1200 lb winch on my hand trolley into drill power.
I get aggravated at how sloppy manufactures have become. By your modifications that winch will last a life time. It's always fun to watch your videos and learn new things. I've used a few of your ideas around my shop so thank you for all you do for us.
Thank you for yet another great video!!! I converted my battery powered drill to a cord that attaches to a car battery, about 20 years ago. (Wow. They have actually been around longer than that.) And converted a newer one, a few years ago. (Drill, cord, lawnmower battery, bits, and all, fit into a square cat litter bucket, so it's still portable.)(Loved it when I saw that you did the same, and made a video so now everyone can do it.) This is going to work great, in combination with that! (Plugged into the truck battery.) Thanks for making me take the time to tweak the winch as well. I probably wouldn't have thought of that. But I will, now. As for the dog at the end... Hey, I subscribed years ago, when you only had about 63 subscribers. (No thousands on that.) LOL So don't growl at me! ;)
I really appreciate the support. I've temporarily hooked drills up to the car battery but never ran it long term/permantly. Something that is definitely on my list once I have a old retired drill.
Moe, I always learn a lot of cool stuff watching your videos. if you keep at it there is no reason you shouldn't end up with a huge channel. thumbs up!
Thanks for the great video, I have the same winch that I purchased at a sale. You have given me an awesome Idea on using the winch with my ATV during and before Deer Hunting. Thanks again
great idea mate , although I have no idea why 5 people have disliked the video , what you did was very basic but at the same time you made what was a very average product into an excellent one , well done :D
It's unreal what the right gearing can do. A transmission guy told me once he could move a train with a washing machine motor if the transmission had enough gears. :>)
awesome this is exactly what i needed! was using a scary non worm drive winch for pulling cars onto a trailer, looked into these cheap worm drive ones, and its good to know you can beef them up! im going to make a sheet metal cover over the gears for peace of mind (last one broke into a million pieces infront of my face) thanks for the tips!
Ratty 64galaxie be sure to have a backup chain in case something fails. I used one to hoist my truck bed off and while it was hoisted up a pulley came off dropping the bed a few feet. The hoist took the hit but almost failed it's self. I had to modify the hoist to make it stronger like in the video.
Nice job as usual, thanks a lot. I'd like to see a closer view on how the cable is set up with the snatch block. Can you make a video or suggest one that you may have seen. Thanks again
A snatch block is a really neat thing. By taking the cable out of the winch and through the pulley of the snatch block, then back to the winch it doubles the pull capacity. It also halves the speed of the item being pulled/lifted but it is a worthwhile trade off. You can keep adding pulleys and running back and forth to reduce the strain on the winch.
I thought you had your head smashed by Negan on The Walking Dead. You obviously recuperated. Seriously, good video. I have been wondering how to make something like your winch. Thanks.
Cool video! I don't use come alongs or winches much, but don't think I've seen a worm gear winch like that. Have to try to find one. I can think of a few uses for one of these already. Thanks for the idea!
I will be building one this year. For when I go out and buy junk mowers with flat tires. That looks like it would pull a lawn mower or ATV on a Truck or a trailer with little to no problem.
Great build Moe! And in a pinch, you could still use a lug wrench or ratchet in a pinch. Great way to also true up something that comes with a large margin of error out of the box. Cheers my Friend! Zip~
Ya these work good , Only thing it could really use is a guide ring on a rod about 8" down the cable like on the come a long so it can`t turn on you if pulling at an angle , Be handy alright .
I just used it tonight to pull a riding mower onto my trailer and it was trying to turn sideways a little. I like your idea and I'm going to weld a guide loop/fairlead a few inches out front. I may make it removable to keep this compact for storage.
One question, how powerful is drill you use? Is it standard 12v drill or? I guess it's not important because there is no need for big power since we can operate it with hand. Right? Thanks again
Thank you for the idea and motivation... I’ll be doing this on my 1996 F-150 Tail gate to assist me with lifting up and down after I put on a 1/2” steel plate on it. It would be economical and budget friendly...
Nice :o) I added a rope guide about 18" from the drum on two pieces of 1" box. That makes the rope wind on a lot better. If I see one like yours for sale I'm grabbing one, as it is so light .
I don't like the weld of the worm bracelet because I can loose the bolts and free wheel pulling the cable out, of course I had to add a cable tension flap and spring to prevent backlash.
Your going to pull that car in half I like the concept but it needs a free wheel mode to drag the cable out fast if you need a lot of line nice dog is that a red healer
Another impressive project. Love the upgrades. Another upgrade you might want to consider: The tube that you have in your hand at 2:10. Drill straight through that, in the middle of the length. Quality control is one of the reasons HF stuff is so cheap; there is none. So some are great, some not so much and some horrible.
This is amazing dude, you gave such good attention to details on this! Well done, thanks for sharing!
Glad you liked it!
I will be using this as a blueprint and instructional for my build. I'll be skidding logs out of hard to reach areas. Thank you so much!
Nice. You should put a socket on the old handle in case you don't have your drill in your vehicle.
Yup. The first thing I thought of was retain the ability to use that handle.
I welded a socket to it. But I also made it as standard lug nut size so a 19mm or 3/4" lug nut wrench will work on it.
Thanks, I'm glad you like it.
I really like that design, I saved a cast iron worm drive out of an old tiller to make a winch, but it's in the big pile of someday projects.
Danthefordfixer yeah we've all got a ton of those lol
Danthefordfixer hell turn a tiller into a winch 😁. A gas powered winch would be awesome.
I'm looking for something to assist with moving firewood logs and have watched several portable winch videos. You're the first presenter who seems to have a clue and then some. Nice job.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
Thank for for reinforcing it not just bolting it up and calling it good like others I've seen on the tubes.
Thanks for watching.

Very good idea,,my biggest enjoyment is making a factory design better than the factory. I think your dog is cool,
Thanks Man.

Great video. I have one of these winches on my auger stand to lift my auger up and down. I need to spin it faster and I have wanted to electrify the operation. Thank you
Most excellent idea, I have no use for one of those right now but if I do in the future I will be stealing all your ideas ! thanks for that.
Thanks
really good detail video..and thanks for no wack off rock music or crazy obnoxious talk........
I like the idea. I've been trying to figure out how to get a ford starter to be the motor on a very similar winch you have there. I've debated a metal roof for a few years now.
I have got to make one ...I have thought of sticking an I-Beam out of my shed above the door to lift stuff ..Like the garden tractor etc
That would be neat.
my new favorite channel. Definitely building one of these. Thank you!
Awesome! Thank you!
I have one exactly like this mounted to the wall in my shop for raising and lowering my staircase up to the loft. Works like a charm. I simply added a few snatch blocks to change the direction of the cable. I am not so sure I would trust what they say it's capacity is with my life though.....

Such a cool design. I think we will soon have one for the farm.
Thanks, I'm sure I'll put it to good use.

Thanks for explaining everything as you went, very informative! Thanks!
you are very smart guy ,there is a lot to learn from you !
while you show something ,I LEARN SOMETHING !
Thanks for watching.
Wow almost a complete rebuild nice job!
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
Good build going to do one for the S10 this weekend.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
You really come up with some GOOD ideas. Thanks. No snow where you live I C. I can just imagine some of your snow blower ideas.
The snow all melted in the past week and it's been 60F. But it's snowing right now and it's 27F.

Very well done young man ! ! !
Keep'em coming
Much appreciated!
Boy ! You sure come up with the neatest ideas.
Thanks for watching.
I need one of these it's one of those things you may never use but if you do it's worth it
I've had this sitting on my shelf for 15 years unused. Maybe I'll use it now.
Nice Idea ! I start lawn mowers with drill... its a bit under powered but it does work in a pinch.
I'd like to see your procedure for making bushings. Thanks for your vids!
Nice , im going to make one .
I've got a Lewis winch that I run off a 100cc chainsaw but its heavy
that's awesome! I like how it demonstrates the amount of power in a battery drill like that!
I was impressed how well it handled it.
i have just bought a Hand winch 2500lbs. I will use your method to make a recovery Winch. Thanks you :)
Very clever idea and love the way you reengineer it so its stronger than ever well done
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
Great small winch solution. 👍🇦🇺
I love the drill powered winch but i would put the come along in with the spare tire because it is a lot of backup for the weight.
Yeah, it would be hard not to keep the trusty come along around.
I get aggravated at how sloppy manufactures have become. By your modifications that winch will last a life time. It's always fun to watch your videos and learn new things. I've used a few of your ideas around my shop so thank you for all you do for us.
Seams that all this Chinese stuff is built down to a price. Thanks.
Very ingenious setup, Moe. Now I know what I need to build for lifting lawn tractors. Thanks!
Thanks George.
sixtyfiveford, Yes, awesome idea and I have exactly the same use for it as Shade Tree. Thank you for sharing this idea!
I never thought of the idea of making a harness to use a car battery thank you
Nice job on the winch.
Thanks.
The copper will wear , but it is like self lubricating kinda like bronze . Makes it a good bushing .
I gonna get one of those winches and make a drive for my bead roller. Thanks for the inspiration!
Awesome.
Moe, I always learn a lot of cool stuff watching your videos. if you keep at it there is no reason you shouldn't end up with a huge channel. thumbs up!
Thanks, Robb.
This is one excellent conversion. One I'll look into for getting my wood chipper onto the trailer. Thank you.
I'm sure this will sit around a lot, but when I need it will be a lot nicer than a come along.
Another mans ideas is another mans treasure 💰💰
Awesome.
Thanks for the great video, I have the same winch that I purchased at a sale. You have given me an awesome Idea on using the winch with my ATV during and before Deer Hunting. Thanks again
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
Brother I would like to order one can you make one for me
great idea mate , although I have no idea why 5 people have disliked the video , what you did was very basic but at the same time you made what was a very average product into an excellent one , well done :D
Thanks Allan. -Moe
It's unreal what the right gearing can do. A transmission guy told me once he could move a train with a washing machine motor if the transmission had enough gears. :>)
It's impressive.
Buy the Dutlan Lanslin model good to go right out of the box
Thanks. The link on Amazon that you give shows a video and they also sell it already made for use with a drill.
I updated the link for the Chinese one I used in the video.
awesome this is exactly what i needed! was using a scary non worm drive winch for pulling cars onto a trailer, looked into these cheap worm drive ones, and its good to know you can beef them up! im going to make a sheet metal cover over the gears for peace of mind (last one broke into a million pieces infront of my face) thanks for the tips!
Thanks.
Wow you could potentially use something like that on each corner of the car with tube steel and a Poli + your winch
AS USUAL GREAT PROJECT COULD SAVE ME A PROBLEM . THANKS FOR THE SPLENDID INFO. TONY T.
Great idea! I might build one of the to hang on a beam in my garage to lift heavy stuff and possibly the top off my jeep!
It's come in handy a few times since I built it.
Allen McKinney not a bad idea especially with the seriously heavy stuff.
You can keep adding pulleys and running back and forth to reduce the strain on the winch.
it also gives you the advantage of a smaller diam spool
Ed KE6BNL not true om
I know this is an older video but this is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
I thought you had your head smashed by Negan on The Walking Dead. You obviously recuperated. Seriously, good video. I have been wondering how to make something like your winch. Thanks.
lol!!
Cool video! I don't use come alongs or winches much, but don't think I've seen a worm gear winch like that. Have to try to find one. I can think of a few uses for one of these already. Thanks for the idea!
Thanks.
I will be building one this year. For when I go out and buy junk mowers with flat tires. That looks like it would pull a lawn mower or ATV on a Truck or a trailer with little to no problem.
Awesome. That's exactly what I built this for.
Great build Moe! And in a pinch, you could still use a lug wrench or ratchet in a pinch. Great way to also true up something that comes with a large margin of error out of the box. Cheers my Friend! Zip~
Thanks. It'll be a lot better than my come along.
have that same winch , teeth are rounding off, you have showed me the fix. thanks
Thank you I have one you use to have now I will make the drill one for me Thank you again !
im going to have to build one of these for my trailer to winch my derby cars back on after a derby
Shawn Deweese first thing i thought about doing too when i go to Boone County, Il
Awesome.
Well heck, I know what I'm building instead of wishing I could buy one. Thanks man cool video.
Thanks Devin. -Moe
Awesome project. I might need to got a hold of one of those myself.
Thanks.
I have a warn drill powered winch. 700lbs 35ft of cable. Works wonders
Thanks mate, this is exactly what I was looking for. I am making something like a chairlift, but with hand winch. Best regards from Serbia :)
Thanks.
Thanks for watching. That's some heavy steel. The tailgate must weigh a ton.
That's a great Idea. I have a big winch . But bbn its it's its a gear. That's what I got. I'll live with it for now
That winch seems to have a lot of power hooked to that drill.
I'm impressed with it.
I'm fixing to try this . Good idea
It works very well.
awesome ! thank you very much !! best worm gear winch test ever seen in tube tube =]
He was right spot! I just subscribed. I like this kid, he's old school!
Thanks Lee. -Moe
that's a real good idea and to think I had one of those winches a while back and gave it away.
I'm sure this will sit around, but it'll be nice when I need it.
endless possibilities, i love it, thinking outside the box
Thanks.
That's awesome. Really nice job there.
Thanks Joe.
damn. that's very well explained. and good to know that the pulley makes half down to half. Thx for making this vid!
Thanks, I'm glad you like it.
The harbor freight version now has a hex on the shaft so would do this without modification. And it's only $35.
This is so weird I had the same idea but didn't think it would do what I wanted but now I know - thanks
It's been working very well.
That is awesome, Thanks for sharing..
Thanks Man.
That worked pretty good! Nice job.
It beats a come along.
Your going to pull that car in half I like the concept but it needs a free wheel mode to drag the cable out fast if you need a lot of line nice dog is that a red healer
Free Wheel was an idea I contemplated but may still do in the future with this. Yes, this is a red healer.
Knocked outta the park again!!
Thanks for watching.
