I just built this exactly based on your design. I even "tried" to think of a way to improve it based on my criteria of efficiency, as I do with everything I fabricate. I couldn't come up with a better design. I imagine that's why your video is the only one that pops up. Only thing I might add is rings or hooks for the straps. I'm using it for tree work so I have to move it around more often. Good job and thanks!
Excellent solutions to hauling and lifting in many places. I’ve been thinking about this for tree pulling, vehicles, boats etc. What I like about this is portability, speed of winching and deployment. Congratulations, I love this ideas, thanks for sharing, God bless from the sunny side of the pond 😉
Thanks for the video info. I'm using it to load my powered wheelchair in back of my van. Before my accident I was 6`- 5" and 250 lbs. The winch lifts the 90 lb. Heavy duty chair, then my friend and I made a sliding dove tail slide to push the chair in, lower it and done and on my way outdoors in my all terrain powered wheelchair.

Good design, I made a modified version. Didn't use square stock, used round for the sides to reduce forces exerted on corners of yours, also flat bar bridged closer to the receiver...this ensures more welding to receiver and side bars for added stability and strength. I'm pulling stumps with an 8 to 1 pulley setup, 32k lbs max distributed. Only done a test run on smaller butterfly bush....pinched the winch cable but it does work great. Might replace with synthetic rope.
Love the idea. Just a thought, but you could attach a solar panel on top of the cooler so it's charging anytime it's not in use. Should charge the batter up in a couple days. No need to take battery in and out then.
Fyi, you will never need to worry for pulling a deer but if you start pulling heavy loads using a bolt like that to secure the tube to the mount can shear off the bolt. Pins are surface hardened and much less likely to shear off. jist a notr fellow DIYers
Never had any issues with the cheap bolts I use (actually used a stick once on a 200 lb deer (it was hickory)..., but I appreciate your taste for quality bolts, Bryan. My favorite brand is Lawson.
Very nice. You could put a solar panel on it to charge it, or mount it to a tree and plug in your cooler that way your not moving the battery in and out of the bush.
Switch the cooler out for one with wheels to make it more portable, and install a solar trickle charger, and the battery will never need to leave the cooler.
I suggest drilling an extra pair of holes in the receiver tube in the other sides. Then it wouldn't matter which direction you use the winch mount. You could also use a hitch pin instead of a bolt. Pick one with a big red handle so it is easier to find if you drop it. You know Murphy is going to be involved sometime.
Mike, I actually thought of that, and then I figured by keeping it separate, I could have more uses for it...... like hoisting a deer up a tree to field dress it, or pulling an ATV from the mud, .....however.... I LOVE the way you think! Thanks for watching and commenting, my brother!
Glad you like my idea, Roger! I designed it to also fit a receiver hitch on a truck so it can be used in other situations. Thanks for taking the time to comment! Please share my video with your friends and family.
I was thinking of doing the same thing but I figured I would need a full size battery. Good to know I can use a smaller battery. How long will your battery last?
I've never had the battery die on me. I've pulled 2 or 3 deer up out of hollows in one day with plenty of juice. Then, I put the battery on the charger for the next hunt.
great concept. sometimes it is necessary to remove bushes or an old hedge with roots in order to plant a new one. there is usually a tree nearby. will the cable fit nicely on the drum even if the winch is slightly at an angle to the thing you're pulling?
Very nice video I seen so far! Ive been searching the web for this kind of application with the winch used solely by battery. I just bought one and trying to use it to pull 3-4 sacks (50kgs) per load from a hill like 80m down in a slide or cart. I also need to transport like 30 sacks (One time in a day). Here is my question, really appreciate if you could response.:) 1. How long was your continuous pull with it? Can the winch work like at least 20m straight? 2. How long you used the battery while continuously pulling? I am thinking to respool the rope with 4mm which could reach like 30m, considering only pulling not too heavy loads (I think). Sorry for lots of question, but really appreciate your feedback. :)
Those are very good questions. 1). My continuous pull was the length of the cable in the spool. I really don't know the exact length.. The Winch wood rest for a little bit when I would re-extend the cable to my rope for re-hooking. I believe that was long enough of a rest, because it took me at least 30 to 45 minutes to get my dear from the bottom of the hollow to the top of the Ridge. I also used it recently to pull a woodstove (on a 4 wheel dolly) up a hill from the backyard to the front driveway and then up a ramp onto the trailer. Once again, I would have to stop to draw the cable out and re-hook to the rope. This was probably an hours worth of use with probably 5-10 minutes of rest in between. 2) I'm not sure what you mean by how long do I use the battery? It's the only way to operate it so the battery is in use the whole time.. Hope this helped
I've been looking into a drill winch for the same purpose. I have a spot I hunt that the deer has to come up a steep hill. I can drag it if my friend is there to help but if I'm by myself it would be impossible. I thought about doing this method but with a boat winch. Its public land so I can't leave anything there it would have to come in and out with the game cart.
I did not get to use it this year. I have tested the strength of it and I think it will do great. I a couple of aluminum pulleys just in case. Have used a gasoline winch for several years but it is rated 2000 pounds. I removed the steel cable and replaced it with 3/8” rope. Strap it to my deer dolly. This drill winch is so much lighter. Made by Warn. I got mine at AutoZone $199. And purchased a Dewalt 1800 rpm drill and two batteries. $159 at Rural King. I now use a jet sled instead of the dolly. It works much better. Good hunting. 🦌
@@PhilCrockett Only other winch video I saw was the boat winch. This is a Warn winch made specifically for use with a drill. 750 pound rating. Weighs less than 10 pounds. Got it at Auto Zone $199. Last year.
have you tried this to hoist a deer for gutting/skinning? i have your hand winch design that i use now but i want to try this new design so all i have to do is cut a slit for the gambrel
Absolutely! I NEVER field dress unless the deer is hanging "head up of course". Just did 4 deer last weekend. However, My favorite way, is using the truck hoist. I like having the tailgate as a table. But when I have to field dress in the woods, this is the way to go. My Back loves me for it! Here's the truck hoist if you haven't seen it. Just like the store -bought, except cumstom made for my needs....... and cheaper if you make it! : ua-cam.com/video/PD72WijswfI/v-deo.html
This is great!!! I need something like this to pull my pontoon boat out on to the shore each fall. I am not mechanical and will not be welding any time soon. Do you think the PVC Tree Mount from amazon PVC-1263 will do the trick. It looks exactly like what you did. But, they seem to only recommend it with a honda gas winch which caps out at 2200lbs. I would like to get a winch at 4-5k lbs. Do you think the PVC-1263 will work?
Not sure if that Pole Mount would work or not. It all depends on the weight and drag / friction of what your dragging the boat over.... also grade of the bank. I once had this idea about being able to launch a boat without a boat ramp. I could make long runners (kind of like atv ramps) that would connect to the rear boat trailer and end up in the water. Then.... I would winch up on the trailer. thought about rollers vs carpet surface.....anyway...Still working on that one in my head. My point... is.... it's kind of the same thing. There are a lot of variables that you have to figure in. or...... just trial-n-error.... you could just simply put a log chain around the tree, and hook to the base of the winch somehow.
Great idea! Thank you for taking the time to put this excellent summary together. Have you used it to pull heavier loads than a deer? I'm wondering if the portable battery set up would allow enough power to pull a vehicle out of a ditch or similar application.
The only thing I've pulled that was "heavier of a load" was a big dead branch that was hung up in a walnut tree. I tied on and ripped it from the trunk with this winch. As far as using it for a vehicle, you would have access to a real battery under the hood if you rigged the wires right. It would be interesting to test a load like this on a ATV battery though. I hope I never get in the situation to know if it works! If you ever try it, please let me know.
This is a clever implementation. I was working on something similar except I wad trying to figure out how to get around the 50ft cable length issue. I think the winches have a limiter and are not continuous run. It you had continuous run, you could wrap the end of say a 300ft rope twice around the take up wheel much like the crab trap pulled the have on "the deadliest catch" where the rope reels of the back of the wheel ass new route is taken up in the front. This way you don't have to keep going up and down every 50 feet.
I thought long and hard about this issue as well. It's really the only flaw in this idea, but walking back and forth 2 or 3 times is WAY easier than dragging a deer up hill. I even thought about making a 4 wheel low-rider cart (kind of like a creeper but only with large wheels) and mount the winch on the front of it. then i would just simply pull the whole load in that fashion. I'm still thinking about how to improve it. That's part of the fun. Thanks for the comment, I enjoyed the idea!
Awesome video. I just made something similar for this coming deer season. What size 12v battery did you use? Looking online there are a ton of 12v batteries just not sure on the amp hour stuff.
Did you try it? I just built it and will be pulling tan oaks and small Redwoods up a ravine using a 13000 lb winch and two snatch blocks. I'll report back.
@@PhilCrockett you'll never convince me that someone is dragging a winch, mount made of steel tubing, a 12v battery, a gun or bow around the woods while hunting especially if you have a bad back, I just can't see it.
@FriendsInLowPlaces Ya... I wouldn't drag all that around either. That would be insane. I would use a deer cart, a backpack, or just leaving it at the top of the hill like I do so you can pull the deer up the hill. No reason to drag that winch around the woods with you. Sometimes I leave it in the truck until I need it. BTW... note that the 12V is a lawnmower battery (which is the heaviest item) weighs 21 lbs. The wench weighs 19 lbs. The metal is 7 lbs. Grand total is 47 lbs. That's a little less than a sack of feed. If you are shooting deer that weigh less than 50 lbs, then you don't need this wench.
Hi Phil - I need this in my life to pull out our boat and jetski from the water. Are you interested in selling one? I have the EXACT same winch.......hoping you say yes as I don't have an ATV to mount the winch to and have just been using some strapping to secure it to the tree but it's a real pain. Cheers.
Rob, I’m not in that sort of business, however, I bet with a little asking around, you can find some one that would weld for you. Get the pieces cut and drilled before asking. There may even be a welding school (high school welding class) that u could find. Send a link of this video. My son took welding in high school, and they got all kinds of projects from folks.
This is an ATV winch. Do ATVs use deep cycle batteries? Also.... what's the advantage? I've never had any issues over the years using the batteries in my video, but I'm always willing to improve the product. Let me know, Abe. Thanks!
Or add a Solar panel to lid, silicone and leave in place.... No need to transport anything....also all block and tackle and you minimize strain on wrench...
Great idea however, I plan on pulling up logs at least 15 feet long and at least 50 ft in distance. How long will a truck battery last with that kind of load.
I suggest starting the truck before winching so it will never be an issue. Drawing down truck batteries isn't good for them. If you need portability you can use a quality (not the Schauer junk Walmart sells) jump start pack. I've used my JNC 660 to run my much heavier Ramsey winch for short periods before I wired it in. I've had it for years after using one every day at a used car lot. You can recharge 'em off your cigarette lighter too.
This was just to let you know about the warn with the battery it's a flat battery very neat looking you can see them at northern tool but they are a lot like $400.
I'm not real sure about that. I've never had one die on me. I've pulled deer out of very deep hollows where you can see the tops of trees. From the depths of those hollows to the top of the ridge.
@@PhilCrockettmost winches have a recommended duty cycle of around 15 seconds then you're supposed to cut it off and let it cool for a few minutes. I honestly don't know of anyone that does that though. From a mower battery you should be able to run it nonstop for about 2mins before depleting the battery. But you'll be out of cable to pull in before that happens.
Nice, just got the exact same winch to do the same thing with firewood rounds lol. How's the winch holding up? Also thought I would point out that a clove hitch would be easier to untie once you've done dragged your load:>)
Just the solution I was looking for, how is that working out for you? Does the battery have a shorter life with it being constantly drained? Or does it go on a permanent trickle charge?
I made this strictly for pulling deer out the hollows that I hunt, so really haven't used it much since deer season. I did pull a huge dead limb from a tree not too long ago with it. So it's working out great. As far as charging.... I usually put it on trickle charge in my barn. However, right now it's sitting on a wood shelf and I haven't had to use it to know if it's still charged. If it doesn't last until next deer season, then I'll buy another one. Pretty cheap when comparing it to back or knee surgery which is what I'm trying to avoid by using this thing. Thanks for the question and feedback. So glad you like my idea.
Thanks for the quick reply, that is all I would be using it for, extracting red deer from some tough places. I had been looking at the Honda 4 stroke PCW, but your clever solution would work equally well at a fraction of the price.
@@PhilCrockett Maybe, but every single cooler I've ever had, filled up with water. Maybe I'm buying cheap coolers lol I always keep a piece of vinyl over mine. Its heavy enough to not blow off or a corner flip up. All my tool boxes, tackle boxes-same thing, if I get caught out or forget to cover them, I'm busy drying stuff out, oiling and replacing things instead working or fishing. I lost a brand new charge controller for my solar panels trying to keep it dry lol. Mother nature finds a way both good and bad. Maybe your cooler won't leak, maybe run a test? Jtbotss. Great video!
I appreciate the tip from you. This is how I like to learn about things, rather than from ruin. My favorite storage boxes are military surplus ammo boxes that secure tight with a latch. I might have to figure one of these in on storage. maybe a rocket box, or one of the bigger ones. Thanks again for the comment. I'm thrilled that you like my videos. God bless you!

HA! I'm not in the welding-for-hire business. I'm more of a hang-out-with-my-buddies-in-the-shop-and-weld type of guy. Love playing in my shop. There are a lot of guys out there like me. get to know one and I bet he'd even teach you how to weld. Thanks for the feedback, John. I'm glad you like my idea. Please share my video with your friends. Better yet.... drop the link of social media and ask if there's anyone in your life that could help you with this project.
Get it done by a fab shop with a liability policy, because no one in their right mind makes such things for sale without insurance coverage. Instead of a portable 10K winch (giant hassle to move and power with zero benefit) I use chains and snatch blocks to guide the winch cable from my truck. It's easy to extend a truck winch with a second cable and appropriate fittings if you max out what's on the spool. I unreel the cable, rig to the snatch block or blocks and apply force where I want it. Snatch blocks let me stay well away from the axis of falling trees etc. The Army rigging manual is available free online (it's public domain and your taxes paid for it). Study rigging and you'll do a lot less grunt work.
Good idea and great video, very nice job. I'm thinking about something like that too but for pulling a moose( with a sled like "animal skidder"). I think i will use a small generator 950 W connect on a car battery for more autonomy with the winch. What do you think about it? Another question: do you think the winch can work in continus for a long distance? Thanks for the anwser Mr Crockett
Most winches like these aren't really meant for long distance. In fact.... I had to test it out before making this, just to see what it can do. I figure if it's too far, then just stop and let it cool at intervals. Would be good to see what kind of heck a fellow could give it. Let me know how it works for you, if you decide to pull a moose.
I didn't think mine weighed THAT much, but I really don't carry it by hand. I put it on my deer cart, so who's to know. I guess with the battery, however, it could probably weigh that. Either way..... i recommend using a deer cart for all your gear (and deer)..... one of the handiest things i've ever made.
I suppose purchasing a solar charger would be a great idea, however, I wonder if there would be enough time to charge the battery from the time I leave the property and return the next day. How long does it take to charge with one? Either way..... what a GREAT tip!
@@PhilCrockett Cool! I paint homes for a living my own business so anytime I'm looking to purchase a home to live in I always exclude condos. but there's one that's super inexpensive on the second floor of a place because there's no elevator and I had this idea to hook up a little swinging arm and platform on a winch so I could load up my tools pick them up swing them out over the balcony and lower them to the ground down below. first thing that comes to mind is how loud the motor might be morning and night when I'm taking tools and equipment in and out. I don't know. Is that a crazy idea?
Justin !!!! That is a genius idea!!! In fact..... electricians use a similar process when pulling large wires and cables up several stories. I was walking through a local hospital and got to see a winch in use for that purpose just a couple years ago. They actually anchored the winch to the floor with concrete anchors. I think your idea is fantastic!!
I've never used it long enough to run it down to know. I charge it overnight, take it with me, usually pull 2 or 3 deer up out of the hollow, and then I'm done for the season. It was in storage on a wood shelf in my barn since November. I recently (3 weeks ago) went to start my mower and the battery was dead from the long winter, so I decided to try this battery out. I put it on the charger, only to find that it was still fully charged. I didn't expect that. I can probably use it again this November.
I shit you not,but I was just thinking about doing this, but for recovery of vechiles, get 3 10,000ib breaking point ratchet straps strap her down, and start winching.
I wonder how that stuff will hold up in a turning winch over years and weather. I actually have a version of mule tape that we used to pull electrical wire up 8 stories. That stuff is amazing. I've been know to braid some together in order to get a little more strength from it and drag downed trees. Good post and tip. I may try loading my winch with this stuff. Never really thought about trying it. THANKS!
Phil Crockett Tie one end to the truck on the road. Thread the other end through the snatch block and trees ,then tie to animal. With radio communication between you and a helper, Drive slowly and pull animal to the road.
HA! that would work if I had 'a road' out there. The Missouri River hills and hollows are thick and deep (like Ozarks). I suppose all this would depend on where a fella hunts. Thanks again for the great tip on that Mule Tape.
Now I gotta get me some Mule Tape! I can see many uses for it. Thanks for the tip, and since ya weld, stop by the Weldingweb forums. I think you'll enjoy them. My nick there is farmall.
You have the equipment. Great! you bring your son and kill an innocent deer, where is your sense of reasoning. What is right and wrong. God bless your country, for allowing you to do this.
I'm glad you believe in God!! Here's what He says: ....The fear and dread of you will fall upon all of the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air, upon every creature that moves along the ground, and upon all the fish of the sea; they are given into your hands. Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, now I give you everything.” Genesis 9:1-3 AND The lazy do not roast any game, but the diligent feed on the riches of the hunt. Proverbs 12:27
Do you eat innocent meat at the market? If you do, then maybe stop being so liberal. The hunters use the whole deer for food. And it’s so much cheaper than the grocery store pound for pound. Maybe you come from some rich family where your butler shops for you. A dead animal is a dead animal. And this is guaranteed organic unlike your cow meat 🥩

Have you tried your drill winch out. I always hunt by myself. Very interesting idea.
Are you talking about my other winch video?

Only other winch video I saw was the boat winch. This is a Warn winch made specifically for use with a drill. 750 pound rating. Weighs less than 10 pounds. Got it at Auto Zone $199. Last year.

You're welcome, Bob! Thanks for watching and commenting!
have you tried this to hoist a deer for gutting/skinning? i have your hand winch design that i use now but i want to try this new design so all i have to do is cut a slit for the gambrel

Awesome bro!!!
Glad you liked it, M Leg!
Nice build. I will follow your specs. I need to pull a 120# WOOD chipper up a 20% grade. It should work perfectly. Thx.
Let me know how it worked out!
Awesome awesome 👏🏻
Thanks for watching and commenting. I hope this works out for you. Let me know
This is a clever implementation.
Do you sell these? I'd need two brackets to move materials over a stream.
Cool idea. Thanks
Glad you liked it, Matt!
Awesome video. I just made something similar for this coming deer season. What size 12v battery did you use? Looking online there are a ton of 12v batteries just not sure on the amp hour stuff.
I used a cheap $20 lawn mower battery. I just make sure it's charged up in between uses. It's never let me down.
Would this setup be strong enough to pull out very small poplar stumps, 3-4 inches in diameter?
idk..... never tried that. Let me know
Did you try it? I just built it and will be pulling tan oaks and small Redwoods up a ravine using a 13000 lb winch and two snatch blocks. I'll report back.

Thanks!!! This thing has really saved my back over the last couple of years. Hope it helps you out too!
Is an ATV battery the same as a motorcycle battery? A motorcycle battery is only 4 pounds.

why the 45 deg cut on the angle iron?
Are you referring to the ones that poke out the back?
Can you post a written instruction diagram on making this
I was hoping the video would show that.
What weighs more, the winch and battery, or the deer?
HA! No comparison.... trust me. I have a bad back, and this has been the answer to all my deer drag'n problems.
@@PhilCrockett you'll never convince me that someone is dragging a winch, mount made of steel tubing, a 12v battery, a gun or bow around the woods while hunting especially if you have a bad back, I just can't see it.
My Shooting iron weighs more
@FriendsInLowPlaces
Ya...
@O.K. Frax HA! nice!
What battery did you use
The cheapest lawn mower battery from Walmart

Use deep cycle batteries for winches
This is an ATV winch. Do ATVs use deep cycle batteries? Also.... what's the advantage? I've never had any issues over the years using the batteries in my video, but I'm always willing to improve the product. Let me know, Abe. Thanks!
@@PhilCrockett i have experience with the motors on a winch pulling alot of power from the battery..hence the reson for using deep cycle batteries
I think 1 day Ill try it. Thanks for the 💡
Hope you do try it. I will never deer hunt without it from now on.
Can you use this to pull the plow?
You can use this to pull about anything. One of the best things I ever came up with. Let me know how it's useful for you.
Or add a Solar panel to lid, silicone and leave in place.... No need to transport anything....also all block and tackle and you minimize strain on wrench...
good tip, Robert!
Great idea however, I plan on pulling up logs at least 15 feet long and at least 50 ft in distance. How long will a truck battery last with that kind of load.
I don't know. Depends on the weight and time I guess. Let me know how it works. Thanks for the comment, William!
Would this work for lifting/lowering a 55 gal feed barrel on a tripod?
I don't see why not.
This was just to let you know about the warn with the battery it's a flat battery very neat looking you can see them at northern tool but they are a lot like $400.
Ya.... that is a lot of coin for sure!
How far can you pull a deer on your battery before it dies?
I'm not real sure about that. I've never had one die on me. I've pulled deer out of very deep hollows where you can see the tops of trees. From the depths of those hollows to the top of the ridge.
@@PhilCrockettmost winches have a recommended duty cycle of around 15 seconds then you're supposed to cut it off and let it cool for a few minutes. I honestly don't know of anyone that does that though. From a mower battery you should be able to run it nonstop for about 2mins before depleting the battery. But you'll be out of cable to pull in before that happens.
Thanks, this is awesome, I will need something like this just for zero turn mower as such.
glad you like it, Keith! My dad welded a receiver hitch on the front of his trailer, so he can winch things up the ramp into the back. works great.
Nice, just got the exact same winch to do the same thing with firewood rounds lol. How's the winch holding up? Also thought I would point out that a clove hitch would be easier to untie once you've done dragged your load:>)
Winch is still in perfect shape. It was a good buy for sure.
Thanks for the tip on 'clove hitch' .... I agree.

Word of advice, never trust a cooler being waterproof, it just becomes a watery tomb for $$$.

@@PhilCrockett Maybe, but every single cooler I've ever had, filled up with water. Maybe I'm buying cheap coolers lol
I always keep a piece of vinyl over mine.

Study rigging and you'll do a lot less grunt work.
does the remote comes with the winch?

Thank you for the answer, i will test it next summer when i will built my winch system but yours is very interesting, great job !!!
how long is the remote control cable?
I don't know the exact measurement, but I think it's 6-7' long. Just a guess.

If you have a place to store this until,,why now put up a solar charger and leave the battery there as well? Just asking
I suppose purchasing a solar charger would be a great idea, however, I wonder if there would be enough time to charge the battery from the time I leave the property and return the next day. How long does it take to charge with one? Either way..... what a GREAT tip!
How loud does it run?
Mine is really quiet. Just a soft hum. In fact, I make more noise during this process than the winch motor.
How long does the batter last before you have to charge it??
I've never used it long enough to run it down to know. I charge it overnight, take it with me, usually pull 2 or 3 deer up out of the hollow, and then I'm done for the season. It was in storage on a wood shelf in my barn since November. I recently (3 weeks ago) went to start my mower and the battery was dead from the long winter, so I decided to try this battery out. I put it on the charger, only to find that it was still fully charged. I didn't expect that. I can probably use it again this November.
I shit you not,but I was just thinking about doing this, but for recovery of vechiles, get 3 10,000ib breaking point ratchet straps strap her down, and start winching.
worth a try for sure, and it can be modified easily.
Just get a capstan winch. Done.

for the money, you could have bought 1 mile of Mule Tape and drug it all the way to the truck
