I think you will have a hard time bringing this through an airport. The security will think it's some kind of bomb terminal and you would have to convince them every time.
Yeah, I was worried about that as well... But I made it from Atlanta to Tokyo with a layover in Toronto last week. 3 countries in the middle of a pandemic.
It wasn't even searched by security. They just let it through.

This reminds me of a quick story!
It was the 60's, and Ken Kellerman was in an experiment between US and USSR on VLB interferometry. He had to travel with an atomic clock about the same size as yours aboard to Leningrad! Not to say the chief airport lady kept asking him why he'd got a large, ticking box with wires that can't go into the baggage compartment! Not only that! Him also carrying nothing else but just a voltmetre, screwdriver and pliers! Guy had to be careful not to the mention the word, ‘atomic’, after what happened in Hiroshima, lol! But fortunately, he got through and the experiment was a success! xD
Haha, that's great! When I used to go to conferences in atomic physics, some of the attendees were afraid of telling the TSA where they were going because "atomic" would raise red flags and some people (claimed) to receive further questions.
I would imagine it is very vulnerable to water damage, right? Just can't shake away the fear of exiting an airport while it's raining with a suitcase with so many open holes. Maybe a solution would be to add a removable plastic cover in the open spots.
Yeah, this is definitely an issue. I have all the ports covered in packaging tape when travelling. It's not elegant, but it works.

@@LeiosLabs Go for it, but I think going with a Mini ITX motherboard might be best and give you more room for a cooling solution. You could also do the water-cooling you mentioned... have a drain at the bottom by the wheels, and fill spout at the top near the handle. That way you can drain it, travel, then refill it to avoid the TSA's liquids restrictions. Lastly, if you do go commercial with this, it'd be great to have a 3-monitor solution where two fold in from the side on hinges and cover the center monitor for storage. You'd obviously need very thin monitors for that. Of course, you'd just be building the mechanism and suggesting monitors. Though, you'd probably have to manufacture a VESA to monitor edge hinge mount. Any way, it's a neat idea if you can make something of it.
@@mikefarrington7141 I really like the idea for the liquid cooling and agree that a mini itx motherboard is probably the way to go for projects like this.
As for the turning this into an actual product... There is just a lot to go into that and I don't even know where to begin. I'll table it for now and think about it more deeply when I have more time.

I kinda feel better now for wanting to build a aluminum briefcase PC. My biggest issue was always the security.
Have you considered building one of those ultra compact desktops? The UA-cam channel Optimum Tech has some videos on compact but still powerful desktop builds.
Yeah, I definitely did, but a lot of those builds needed new parts. The motivation behind this build was that I wanted to keep my old stuff working for as long as possible.
In the end, an ultra-compact desktop might have been a better option overall, but I am really happy with how this turned out!

I want to build a suitcase PC, too. But I am really worried about pressure on the mainboard or the vibrations while carrying the case. Any thoughts on this?
Not really a problem in this build. You do want to relocate the GPU though and not have it exert force on the mainboard, and you probably don't want a high-leverage heavyweight CPU cooler on there.
Is there a reason for having cutouts for the ports and power connector, exposing them to the outside? It doesn't seem like you would use the computer with the lid closed.
Yeah, I thought about keeping all the ports internal, but decided just to leave the front-plate internal because it was the only way I could get the motherboard to fit.
Also: I end up closing the case at night, so it's nice to have a few ports that are "always connected" while using the device in a new location.

I had the same thoughts. Next year I have to edit a movie for my A-Levels in school. We have PCs there but I work with a program that is very bad optimized and the PCs probably can't deal with it. So I thought that a laptop could remotly control my station at home, but this seems to be a big risk to the network here at home. We have 2 firewalls and a access from a public network like our school would be a big risk. So now, I will probably build a suitcase PC.
Could you go over the process of mounting the monitor into the case? I have a case and monitor picked out for my own case PC, but there's like 0 tutorials or guide on methods of mounting them, they just assume everyone looking at this already knows what they're doing.
The truth is that it's kinda a "do whatever you want" type of situation. I got a wall mount for my monitor, then drilled the appropriate holes in to the other side (took me a long time to get the alignment right).
That said, if the monitor is light enough, you could consider using some double-sided command-tape (the stuff you use to hang pictures on the wall without damaging them -- note there are velcro-like versions available as well).
For the Mother Board, I just drilled the holes, but looking back, I should have grabbed an ATX test kit mother board mount (it's like a clear piece of plastic with the holes already screwed for you). Then I could have just thrown it into the case and been on my merry way.
The case ventilation holes are not necessary if you are water cooling, but also: I don't know if you can fly with a liquid-cooled machine (at least not one that looks like this). That said, airlines are becoming stricter with weight limits for carry-ons and I don't know if you can even fly with this anymore.
What size is that case and whT size is the monitor?
This is clever but how exactly do you use it? In most homes, the keyboard and mouse is just below and in front of the display, but here the computer is there.
I presume the monitor stays in the case, so then do you lay it on the ground? Or you put some kind of hard surface on top of the computer and put the keyboard and mouse on that?
I usually have the monitor a bit away from me, so it's comfortable to have the keyboard with in front of the case.

It was just what I had on hand. I would definitely just look up portable monitors on amazon now to find the right one.

Just make sure whatever you get is sturdy enough. If you don't need to take it on a plane, then liquid cooling can save you some space.

Video editing, streaming, gpgpu, computational science. I used to have great cluster access with my university, but now that I am unaffiliated, I have to bring my power with me.

So, you've already bought all the parts, but I can't help but think a more interesting way to go would have been "portable laptop dock". Get a decent normal laptop, a laptop dock, a nice screen (such as the one you found), and most importantly: an external GPU.
You'd lose some customizability and it'll probably be a bit more expensive. You'd gain a portable workstation in the laptop though, which would "carry over" to your full workstation (since it is still literally the same computer).
To each their own. I really like my computer as it is and have been wanting to make something like this for ages.
A laptop workstation sounds like a fun project, though!

Try to make the CAD model first before building one.
That would be the next step. I couldn't really do that in this case because I didn't have the exact specs for the case.
I would love to design this system from the ground-up in CAD, but that's another project entirely.

Yeah, I spent a lot of time looking at these and only found a few that would fit into carry-on. There was one I found that seemed perfect (It had wheels and everything), but it was no longer in production.
@@LeiosLabs I have a velka 5, the thing is so tiny it could probably fit in any luggage. I would recommend getting the slightly larger Velka 7 though. It's only a liter larger and you can use a psu that isn't as loud + extra cooler height clearance and slightly larger gpu

You can use urethane from windshields with primer. Make a base for ATX and it’s more universal.
