- KS5 multimedia resource containing scenes from 'The Big Bang Theory' where the characters flout Grice's 4 maxims of quality, quantity, manner and relation. Made for The University of Nottingham, PGCE in Secondary English.
Why do I have to watch this for college
wow same lol
@@amanpre3t same :(
It has great examples of the Maxims of the co-operative principle, an important theory in pragmatics. If you're teachers are getting you to watch youtube instead of reading books, be happy about it!
@@WanderingRonin8 big bang theory made me lose more information than I gained this hurt my brain to listen to.
Great examples of what not to do but also fuck that show

This would be better without the unnecessary background music
Ahh yes, I see you too have come here because a University class has left you oblivious and UA-cam, as usual, has found you.
I think that in many cases (most in fact) the speakers are not flouting the maxims but violating them...
what's the difference between flouting and violating
Correct. To flout the maxims would be to intentionally disregard them for a purpose, typically to communicate subtextually. For example, flouting the maxim of quantity could be used to imply that the extra information given is in fact relevant. Labeling cereal as “poison-free” would imply that other cereal contained poison without having to directly state it.
In which case you mean ?
Yes they do violate the maxims but this violation doesn't result in conversational implicatures since Sheldon is ignoring the cooperation priciple. The purpose of grice model is not to regulate speech but to illustrate how speakers understand what others mean even though it differs from what they say.
...went to the office, sheldon wanted them to know that he wasn't really going to the office. So, yes there's something that can be implied here ;)
so amazing i finally understand those maxim principles
Am I the only one who thinks the music superimposed on this compilation is too loud? It's distracting.
Surely the first one is relation (relevance) not quantity? The point is that Sheldon doesn't comply with Raj's (indirect) request to pass him the ketchup, not the number of words that he says about ketchup. It would still have been a violation (though not nearly as funny of course) if he'd simply said "I like ketchup" and gone back to eating.
Why can't it be both?
It's quantity because he said way more than necessary.
@@fenixrising1972 More than one maxim can be flouted/violated.
@@fenixrising1972 The joke mainly comes from relation though.
I dont think it is maxim of relation because he answered Raj's question if there is a ketchup with "Yes, there is" Raj's question is simply answerable by a YES or NO. Tho it it is true that he violated the Maxim of Quantity bc he said too much
The last scene has nothing to do with the maxims. It was more about semantics
Ambiguity = flouting of the maxim of manner.
Thanks so much for this. Excellent demonstration, and one of my favorite shows.
Good afternoon, Miss. Can I use this video as a supplement to my learning? Thank you in advance.
the last example has nothing to do with maxim of manner.
dude it has, the ambiguity. it kills me so many times XD
it actually has, like wood means smth else XD
Great! I work in this field and I really enjoyed it!!! :-)
This is awesome! Thank you!
I don't want to watch this for college, help.
Can someone explain me the last one?
college workshop class lmao
Does anyone know if it is legal to include a link to this video in a sociolinguistics textbook I'm writing? If so, what are the citation protocols?
+Karen Williams Probably is legal, but as posting coprighted material on youtube(vid above) is illegal, this video could be removed like today.
Not really. This counts as fair use as it's non commercial and for an academic purpose.
Wow I got it the first 5 seconds , think you.
This is great!
Why are you playing a tabla throughout your vid?
So that it doesn't get removed by UA-cam for infringing copyright
Anyone knows the episode the last scene is from?
The Big Bang Theory.
How is the first one applicable? Can someone explain please?
When he asked if that was ketchup the appropriate response would be for Sheldon to say yes and reach over to grab it for his friend. Instead he answered "yes" and returned to the original conversation which in turn offended his friend.
@@ashleyruegg5114 He's Sheldon, he doesn't understand that kind of round-the-houses way of asking for something to be passed. Just the literal question. Raj has known him long enough to know that, you'd think. 🤪
great
You must be a cool teacher!
nice
Qué capitulo y de que temporada es?
Only in America ?????
Hello Mr. Zähres
What's the song?
Matthew Hartford Happy Endings by Faul. If you ever want to know songs like this use an app called Soundhound, its free and really good.
thanks just to let you know we used this in an english lesson and it was pretty sound
Who's here from Sociolinguistics?
I'm not from Sociolinguistics. I'm from China.
Hi, I know this scene with the german translation, but I would like to know why "wood" is so hilarious? In german is used another word to create a similar joke, so I can immagine what it shell mean. But it still would be very nice if someone *wood* explain it to me :D
King178to Substitute the word 'wood' for 'erection' - this is the joke!
@@henlen2923 really? Because I didn't understand too...
@@genesisvasquez8498 Yeah, but it's also a very unfunny joke.
The real joke is that those who laugh, Raj and Howard, are incels.
