Overseeding Thin or Bare Areas of Your Lawn

  • I use this same overseeding process anytime I need to fill in bare areas of the lawn, but now that Spring is here and the long days of Summer are coming, this shady area of my lawn is receiving the most sunlight it can possibly get and that will really help to get the grass going here. Most spring overseedings with Kentucky bluegrass don’t do very well, but dense shade can require a spring overseeding.

    Great video BW! I enjoy the narration and appreciated your waiting a couple weeks so you could show it starting to come in!

      Thank you very much! I’m glad to hear that you enjoy the narrative aspect of my videos. It just seems like when I watch videos, I’d rather see something happening than watching someone talk to me. I know that may seem less personal but I think the videos may be better if they’re more about growing grass and less about me.
      I really appreciate you and all the others taking the time to post a comment once in a while, it reminds me that there really are wonderful people like you watching the videos.

      You are very welcome Jamie. I’m glad the video was helpful and I’m sorry you lost your grandpa so young. It’s very nice to hear that my video was able to stir an enjoyable memory of your grandpa for you. Old, me? Don’t give it another thought, I completely understood what you were saying. Thank you very much for your sweet comment.

    I used a sifter screen the kind used to screen out river rock for gold panning to put my top soil over the seed. I just shake the screen till the seed is covered. when Im done I press it down with a lawn roller..

    Would love to see a few months later or even now video of the project. I seen a lot of sprouts in there! Is there anyway to trim them trees to lessen the shade? Or is it something you would even want to bother with?

      Everything causing shade over there belongs to my neighbor so I have little control over that. There is a very good shot of the overseeding results in my video titled “Even Easier Lawn Renovation Part Three” at the 3:49 mark of the video ua-cam.com/video/Nl6wh4eVAAA/v-deo.html . I shot that video in August the same summer.
      It still looks great today as you can see in my recent video “Get’er Down! Fall Fertilizer” ua-cam.com/video/8Ps6g5Mmz1E/v-deo.html . Thanks for watching and commenting.

    I’m in the middle of my renovation and still debating what type of kbg to seed, I was thinking about bluebank... would you recommend otherwise? I’m located in Illinois thank you

    • @YouCanDoItLawnCare
      @YouCanDoItLawnCare  4 роки тому +1

      My Bluebank is still less than a year old and I should give it more time before I make any public recommendations for it, but since you asked and time is of the essence, I have to say that I’m very impressed with my Bluebank so far and I just bought enough of it to finish the rest of my lawn with. I think you made an excellent choice especially if you have or have had any problems with summer patch or necrotic ring spot. I’ll be talking more about that in an upcoming video. The only thing about Bluebank is that just like Midnight KBG it can get some powdery mildew in the shade spring and fall, but that’s just a nuisance and goes away in the summer or is easily treated with fungicide if you care to.
      I just watched your last two videos and they were fun to watch. Check him out everybody.

    Do I always have to put top soil after I over seed or can I get away with just putting seed down?

    • @YouCanDoItLawnCare
      @YouCanDoItLawnCare  2 роки тому

      No, you don’t have to put topsoil down. Topsoil helps to improve the germination rate of your seed, but you don’t have to use it. You could just use more seed and get more germination that way. You can also use a normal amount of seed and scratch up the soil and seed with a rake to improve seed to soil contact and germination. Good luck with your project!

    Can you put starter fertilizer in thin spots? or does any starter fertilizer have to be far away from an established grass?

      I’m sorry, but I’m not an attorney, and I’m not familiar with the regulations where you live. Therefore, you need to contact your attorney for a definitive answer to this question.

    Good job BW! Do you think the bare spot by the gate is caused by foot traffic?

    • @YouCanDoItLawnCare
      @YouCanDoItLawnCare  3 роки тому

      Thank you very much! That’s an excellent question, and it would normally be the most likely cause, but that gate is lightly used, only a couple of years old, and there used to be a garden and some rock in this area as well, so there could be other soil issues involved. That’s why I wasn’t sure about it being caused only by foot traffic and compaction. The good news is that the overseeding worked and that area filled in nicely. Thank you for giving me the chance to explain.

      @@GarageGear I do have some compaction happening at the big gate that I use more often and drive the big mower through all the time. I bought a hand aerating tool that I would like to try out in that area this year. That might be worth a video?
