Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Review | Three Months Later...

- Reviewing the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra three months later, including an in-depth camera test, battery life verdict, performance and more. The Galaxy S23 Ultra is one of the best flagship smartphones of 2023 vs the Pixel 7 Pro, Huawei P60 Pro and Xiaomi 13 Ultra. However, Samsung's mega-phone is also far from budget friendly, so should you upgrade or get the S23 Plus?
If you want incredible battery life, this mighty mobile is certainly in the top five easy. I've struggled to kill the thing in a single day even with plenty of camera play, and a generous slice of gaming.
Speaking of that camera, the Samsung S23 Ultra boasts a fresh new 200MP sensor that you won't find on the regular or Plus models. This is great for low light shooting, almost as hot as the P60 Pro, while the telephoto shooters are great for natural pet/kid snaps.
Gaming is a breeze thanks to Samsung's wise decision to shove a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 inside of the Galaxy S23 Ultra. This is a massive upgrade vs the Exynos chipset of the S22 Ultra, so you'll get beautiful smooth performance all day long. It's really only the sky high asking price that makes me balk. And the long term prospects are good, as you get years of OS and security updates.

Got my Green S23U 12GB ram with 512gb storage delivered 2 weeks before it officially came out and honestly best phone I have had so far.
What was your phone before this ?
@@rafioo7jb Base S21 but with Exynos chip so it wasn't that good at all
@@reecechadwick8504 ok, i am using note 20 ultra exynos, considering to update.
Just thinking, should i wait for the s24 series.
Thanks for the response.
@@rafioo7jb of course , you should wate for the s24 series if you can , 'cause rumors are pointing to a much better and more efficient processor , new variable zoom camera ....
Same here. 12/512
The gaming mode also has the power pause option. Meaning that the game will run directly through the USB power, protecting the battery.
This is so useful ❤❤❤
It's a helpful feature and Sony had this first they have mastered that side of things quite well
Is this on s23 plus as well?
This is one of the most underrated useful things when it comes to mobile gaming!!
@@Unknowner291 should be on all galaxy phones if i recall correctly.
also, it will only show as an option in game booster, if you have fast charge. if you don't, it won't show as an option, but your phone will just not charge.
i got this on my s23u, and did some sweaty ranked games on wildrift for 2hrs on the highest settings. i can feel the chip get warmer, but the battery stayed the same temp, and stayed ad 48% the whole time. and i didn't experience any drops in fps.
honestly my preferred way of gaming now. the battery tends to heat up rather quick when gaming while not plugged in, which leads to performance loss.
Got 512gb and it's honestly the best phone I've ever used. The screen and battery life are just phenomenal
I have same. But somehow my battery life is shit. Even if i turn on power saving (what I don't like but just to test) should I go to samsung for new phone of smth or?
@Jeffrey Dillen If your battery life is bad then yes I think you should get in touch with Samsung as it sounds like a fault. I'm a heavy user and I get a full day with some battery left over
@@broughy23 did you have problems with the screen hurting your eyes? Or has anyone you know? I want to get the phone but people keep saying they are returning it because it’s making them dizzy and their eyes hurt. I haven’t tried it though.
@Andrew Fuss No, I've had no issues like that to be honest. I have the auto brightness feature on, so it never gets too bright.
@@broughy23 Ok thanks for the reply. I may just go get it today. I guess if worse comes to worse and it messes with me I can always exchange for something else. Just didn’t want to pay a restock lol. I gotta feeling I’ll love it though. Never had a problem with a Sammy screen during the s7 til the s10 so idk why I would now either.
I've had the 512gb S23 Ultra since launch. I had used the pixel 7 Pro prior and have an iPhone 14 Pro as well, but neither come close to the S23 Ultra. Performance has been outstanding, cameras are great and I enjoy One UI more than any other OS. I prefer Samsung's apps in many cases so I use a combo of those and Google's. Combine all that with the amazing SPen and I'm very satisfied with the device despite the large price tag. Even that wasnt bad with the generous trade in at launch.
I feel like a lot of preference is used when talking about the software but performance wise...
You notice the difference in long term use.
S23u really holds its battery power through vigorous usage👌🏽
@@soul-the_argonaut5211 agreed. Definitely a preference. I totally understand if someone prefers the Pixel experience or iOS. Use what works for you. They are good performance wise too. I just notice more issues with iOS the last few years than I do with the other OS. Even that is just my experience. Someone else may have a different experience. Can't go wrong with any of these devices these days.
Please can you please get me one also 🙏
I just ordered mine , this will be my first Samsung in 15 years ! I'm coming off the pixel line , I hope I like it , I always ignore Samsung because I prefer stock android and Google search for everything but the past 3 pixels have given me problems with the charge port .. very annoyed.. hopefully Samsung wins me over
how do you find it so far i am a google pixel user do you recommend?@@jrighteous1984
Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is technically far ahead of anything that's available in the market today. As someone who owns both S23 Ultra and iPhone 13 pro, I certainly appreciate how much the Ultra makes my life easier especially at work with its unique capabilities like Dex and S pen. Its smooth, fast and leaves no stones unturned. The experience is just unparalleled.
What about z fold 4 ??
@midomattar837 z fold 4 is okay it just doesn't really compare to the fold 5 in form factor, and the cameras aren't as good either. The s23 series might have better hardware, tbh while the fold offers a bit more finesse with the one ui capabilities.
I got the Graphite 512GB. Rocking it with no case since release and still in great condition. Best phone of 2023 easily
Living life on the edge with no case lol, props to you.
@@CoachD77Could you imagine shattering such an expensive phone, I'd stare at a wall for days
@Cyan That would be horrible. I have to protect my investment. I barely go no case even if I'm in the house.
No doubt its the best performing galaxy ever , no more exynos , but I still miss the old galaxy note(RIP ) with all the old convenience features that you no longer get.
the best of 2023 ?
id give it maybe top 4 maybe.
@@mikldude9376 what features are missing compared to the notes? I'm currently looking at upgrading from my Note 20 Ultra. Had Note 9 before this and that was the best phone I've ever had.
I do love my S23 ultra, love the fact I never have to worry about the battery

I have a green 23u 256, runs like a beast, switched from the iphone 12, love how quick and snappy the ultra is!
The price tag is absolutely worth it for me. I love my S23 Ultra! I've even used the S-Pen as a camera shutter button.
I'm trading in my S21+ 256GB for $450, and got a deal on a 512gb Green Unlocked for the price of a 256.
Please can you get me one too 😭
@oneanime8682 I would buy you a phone.
Love the Oshi noko backgrounds. Very nice review!
I bought my laptop after watching your review on HP spectre x360 , then I bought my galaxy watch 5 after your review. Now that I want to change my phone after 5 full years I can get a good s23 ultra. I did not regret any of my previous purchases. I love my laptop so much , it is perfect
BTW I think I'm gonna love the huge screen. I already have galaxy S9 and the small screen is killing me. I want a big screen so I don't have to carry my laptop everywhere for every single task I want to do
Your reviews are a delight to watch! Cheers man
Had the iPhone 12, but I’ve decided to train this in for a massive change. I’ve never been with android , but definitely love the look and interior factors of this phone. With the insane night vision and so on, I also have seen gameplay. And it’s insane!
Definitely can’t wait to hear a knock at the door with the phone there . Pretty excited.
Did you get your phone yet ? What's your impression so far ? I haven't had a Samsung phone in 15 years ..
@@jrighteous1984I came from am iPhone 14 PM and this phone puts that one to shame. It is beautiful
Just picked up my first ever Brand new Samsung phone and its the S23 Ultra 512gb.... Great deal at £950! Been an iPhone user for 10 years..... Time for a change
I just ordered mine which is arriving tomorrow. Green 512GB.
Samsung has some great offers at the moment, too tempting to miss especially with the £200 cashback, and the free earbuds.
I don't need the earbuds but I should be able to sell for £100 ish and reduce the cost of the phone even more.
did you use a screen protector? if not how did the display do with scratches etc.?
Your reviews are killing me :D Keep it up!
this guy is the funniest techy i've ever seen🤣
Thank you for this review! It helped me greatly with the choice. Btw where did you get that amazing Hosino Ai picture?:D Is there a good app on mobile for high res anime wallpapers?
S23 Ultra is my favorite phone I've ever had and continues to blow me away still to this day, makes my iPhone 13 pro seem stale and outdated
How do you think the xperia 1 V will go against the S23U?
How is the Audio with the S23 ultra? My old S20 has a lot of static using an adapter to connect a 3.5mm jack based headphone (IEM). any issue's there?
Did you try the Bixby call screening?
Great review! There's one thing I don't understand. Google wallet doesn't even exist in my country, and google pay is far worse than Samsung pay or apple pay. Plus, having Bixby means Samsung can implement it's own call screening feature (something google only keeps exclusive to pixel) and modes and routines. SmartThing app is absolutely essential if you're into the Samsung ecosystem (which is the best in terms of versatility). Galaxy store, albeit a bit unnecessary, still has useful stuff like theme pack. I don't understand why reviewers absolutely loathe Samsung giving us these services.
The analogies were the cherry on top of this review. Had a hearty chuckle, thanks.
Love your reviews!
hi Chris , I'd like to ask one important question, do you have any info about if I'm going to use this Samsung on my motorbike, will the vibration damage the cameras? I got a XIAOMI MI10 T Pro, just recently dead the camera focus in it, due to some jam some internal parts. what do you think about it?
I am not really interested in phones but got this for two reasons. The first is I am interested in wildlife and aviation photography and travel a lot. The S23 ultra has genuinely good telephoto capabilities and has allowed me to capture loads of shots I would otherwise have missed through not carrying my mirror less camera. The camera is superb and really is very good for telephoto use, not just good 'for a phone ' but properly good. The second is the pen which I find incredibly useful. Battery life is great and the screen is fantastic. However most of what it can do is way over my head. Expensive, but excellent.
WTF buy a fucking camera if its all what you need !
Super duper REVIEW GR8.....already bought S23 ULTRA BLACK on launch ......got it exchanged for my FOLD 3 which was very heavy
Just got mine few days ago. The device is awesome. Been using note 8 for the past 4 years. Not gonna compare ofc. Bu the display is out of this world. What a machine. Will see how the rest will hold up💪
Got the 512GB of the Ultra and it is the best phone I have ever used. Extremely amazing and has never hung up on me. My favourite feature is the fact that when gaming, you can connect your phone to your charger and the power from the charger would stop charging the battery and power the phone instead, reducing temperature on the phone and increasing performance.
That blew my mind.
Love it
I didn't know S23U got bypass charging features lol.😅
How do I do this, just got one?
Sony xperia had this feature for years lol.
A while ago I commented that I bought my laptop and watch from your review, I got my galaxy s23 ultra yesterday, it is crazy good, so goooooood
Honestly I still think that the S22U is overlooked. I know it had it's share of battery issues when the 8G1 launched. It has gotten significantly better though after all of the updates. I've had days that I can get upwards of 9 hours with the screen on.
I have the SD S22 Ultra...it's a beast. Battery life is now great after ONE UI 5.1 updates. It's now very smooth as well.
I have the SD version s22U also. Contemplating upgrading as I can now get the s23u 256gb for £699 on current deals thru cashback and trade-in of any old phone
Love you and your reviews

Dude, where do u get those wallpapers from?
I have had my s23 ultra for a week and it's amazing best phone yet .
Been having this beast for 3,5 months. best phone i ever had.
p.s get well lad, you sound pretty sick.
What's the app u said to add for the Samsung camera I can't find it
I haven't an issue when taking a picture infront of the computer screen, the image seems to be blurred. Have you ever experienced it or known how to fix it. Really appreciate your help.
Insightful as always... The dig at my mum was a nice touch.
I've had my Samsung Galaxy S9+ for 5 or 6 years now and that is from having an iPhone 6. I use to have all Apple products as their "ecosystem", if you will, requires it. Since switching to all Android products it stuns me that people still love Apple products. Android is more superior in regards to versatility of OS and also pairing product options. I just purchased the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and can't wait. My phone company, for early Boxing Day sale, is paying $800.00 of new phone and when checking out the iPhone 15 Pro Max they had almost no sale coverage. I'm not hating on Apple products I just don't get the hype. Yes, 10-15 years ago they were the obvious go too but now Android seems better and seems to have better sales. Thank-you for your review!
Which version do you recommend, the 256gb vs 512gb of course with 12 ram, I plan to last at least four years with the mobile, I only record video for the networks and then delete it, I use few applications and I don't play only photos.
Just upgraded from the note 20, good improvements especially the camera. 👍
i have s23 ultra 512 version and love it very much. the only drawback is that it is not a little smaller and that the system does not have more animations, widgets and such small things. otherwise the phone is brutal. if i were to trade it would be for the new sony 1v or the powerful huawei p60 pro
Waiting on mine - Due next week and coming from a 12 Pro Max. Excited :)
got my s23 ultra yesterday, wasnt planning on it, but the watch 5 pro is linked to my wheelchair power assist so it wasnt gonne be long before i went full kit shaky shaky on it. huawei pro 2 for earbuds or galaxy pro 2?

Hi, I am in the market for a new phone, upgrading from an iPhone 5. Anyhow, was wondering if the s23 ultra allows us to use apps like one note /zoom meetings, and make use the stylus for writing on the screen during the meetings., and sharing the contents with others present.

Agreed it was the whole reason I got an s21 ultra. Was able to read the tail number on a low flying plane with it. Can't live without it
Is that digital x100 or optical x100?
@@Uzeless I think it's 10 optical, 100 digital.
s21u until s23u all have same tele config, ultrawide with AF( samsung's middle finger to those phones with dedicated macro lens), wide with ois, 3x tele ois and 10x periscope ois. so yeah optical at 3x, more😊 then 3x it start digital zooming using tele 3x, starting at 10x only it uses that periscope. as a s22u owner i find that the image produced is usable up until 30x, more than that just for looking up
@@blitzer25blitz62nah? I've seen people use the 100x zoom to catch footage at basketball games from the nosebleeds. I've even been able to catch footage like that myself when I had my s10 and it definitely wasn't the worst. Go look up the videos for yourself.
The 8 gen 2 compared to the Exynos is a total game changer.
Was thinking of getting one sounds like i just made my mind up looks and sounds Amazing phone great review 👌
Why you didn't mention Honor Magic 5 Pro instead of Xiaomi 13 pro and Pixel 7 pro? 🤔
On most reviews, or even all of the once that I’ve came across for that matter - I can see in the comments that people made a cross from iOS to Android because of the S23 Ultra. Ironically, I made the switch as well without really knowing the true potential of the phone or to even know that it was THAT good to begin with, because honestly it was an impulse buy after playing around with the phone’s camera at a tech store 😂. I said to my wife, “wow honey, look how powerful this camera is!” lol.
It felt like I jumped ship just at the right moment, to a great phone. Greater specs, and most importantly- finally, better projection for software updates.
Nothing against iOS though as I find the app support - although costly if compared to Android, is much better. For example, the Document app by Readdle at the moment is only exclusively for iOS and I’m gonna miss it a lot. And I miss iMovie.
But for someone who has been an iSheep for years, not wanting to consider Android anymore even once, this is a surprising shift even for myself 😂.
You don't have to worry about losing the S Pen - in settings you can set the phone to alert if you pick it up and leave the pen behind
I love my s23 ultra but hate how they limit the use of flash on the ultra wide camera. I should be allowed to choose if i do or don't want to use it.
Just get a screen protector.
I have this phone and it's great...
But the screen does pick-up micro scratches really easily.
I think the gorilla glass is very shatter proof, but at the expense of being slightly softer, which makes it prone to light scratches.
Samsung should ship this from the factory with a protector applied like some other manufacturers are doing.
@DailyTwitchHighlights my man, it's literally gorilla glass victus 2
@@brainloop99 and last years victus one was supposed to be the bees knees , but one of the reviewers on camera dropped his 22 ultra on his table from 12 inches high on the curved display and it cracked , and the commenter is right , being more shatter resistant does make them more pliable in a drop but softer for scratches.
it's not shatter proof, watch the droptests.
@@brainloop99 does not matter.
In the three months I have owned one, I have tried four screen protectors, which all suck. I hate curved displays for that reason, and, of course, they are stupid as they are much weaker when you drop them on those curves. What is their point?
Hi @tech spurt

I got S23 ultra since launch and I can say this is the best mobile phone I've ever had!!!! My previous phone iphone 13 pro.
Can you do a long term review of base S23 ?
where you find this wallpaper?

Few things. After years of using budget phones and going to this was an epic Wow! Moment. I think it is totally worth the extra bucks. Also Samsung Uk are always doing promotions so you will always get some money off or some vouchers. They gave me a 300 pounds Adidas voucher, on top of my niece's student discount 😊 the size? It took me some time to get used to but now after 1 and half months of usage I don't notice it anymore. The camera was the main reason i got this phone for but it has been such a pleasurable experience all round. Thank you for your review Techspurt !
One last thing, after seeing so many reviews of this phone online i was totally expecting for people to constantly inquire about my new phone 😂 Honestly, no one seems to know about this phone in real life. Which is ok but i found that so peculiar.
how about more details on the fingerprint scanner? i had nothing but trouble with the s21's ultra performance for reading my damn fingers and forgetting them on occasion. How's the s23 on this part?
It's pony. I hate it. Works maybe 4 out of 10 times for me.
I have the green S23U 257gb; fantastic phone, paired with my Galaxy Watch 5, I’ve enjoyed it immensely. Would I use it as my daily driver? No, but it’s the closest I’d turn to android from my iPhone. Nice job Samsung
You mind shearing what do you use as daily driver over the s23 ultra and why ?
@@ivanpetrov7379 I use an iPhone 14 Pro Max as my daily driver. Couple reasons, the first is that I’m American so texting is the main source of communication and unfortunately traditional SMS falls far short of iMessage in terms of functionality; if I was anywhere else and using third party messaging apps then I’d use the S23U as my daily driver. Second would be ecosystem; I have both ecosystems for both phones, in fact I have a lot more devices for Samsung than I do my Apple stuff, however I find that my Apple ecosystem works a smidge smoother and offers more options for app support. Last would be the camera and video; S23U takes some amazing photos but the downside, even with the newest update would be the shutter lag. I have a new baby and taking photos with the S23U I found that with a squirming baby, I got a lot of blurry photos, with iPhone, it’s not 100% but I get photos I want the first time. Video on iPhone is still king too, I prefer the video over S23U, even with the 8K which you can only use if you’re sitting still (any movement kind of just distorts it).
If I was anywhere else besides the US for vacay or work my number one choice would be the S23U, so definitely based on location rather than which phone is better.
@@superiortoall22 I'm curious about the iMessage comments. I live in Australia so maybe it's just not something that is over here, but what really is the difference? I had a iPhone before upgrade the this one, and I don't notice anything different about sending messages from either phone? Probably the only thing I will say is if you send pics in iMessage I think they stay as high res - but andiod the quality of pics goes to shit... But I don't really go sending photos over sms that much and just use FB messenger if I do
Please can I have your s23ultra please 😭
You do the best reviews ever.
Love my Green S23U 512Gb and perfomance was a big step up from the S22U I had. Battery life is epic
Do you installed the updates? I updated 2 and battery dies so quick. Losing 30% in 1h30
@@miroslavfreerider3439 Fully updated and battery life is still fine. Might be worth trying a full reset of your phone then if still the same speak to where you bought it as it could be faulty?
@Ian Gillespie Thank you for answer 🙏
Upgraded from a very glitchy Exynos S22U when I obliterated the screen. The first day, and it's already showing it is a much better phone. Loving the squared of sides, much easier to hold with a disabled hand.
Can you pleeeease review the nubia z50?
Its china only but its the cheapest snapdragon 8 gen 2 and definitely worth the coverage, and it barely has compromises
Every time they upgrade the glass to a better, newer and stronger version they just make it thinner to reduce weight resulting in easy scratches every single time. I have a 2 year old oppo find x3 pro that had its factory installed protector come off more than one year ago and it has been in my pocket since, with keys and stuff and ZERO scratches.
This review and the comments have me ready to upgrade from my S21 😅 I didn't realize I was that far behind lmao
Fantastic review which tells a lot. Can I chance my arm with a rather silly question. I have a 6 month old Z Fold 4 which is the 1TB version. Would it be worth swapping for the S23 Ultra?
Aren't you happy with the Fold? I would personally Upgrade maybe in like 2 to 4 years. The performance should be more than enough no? Also you go a bit ass Screen for reading which is nice.
@@MrArmorcat I really do like it a lot. Now for the inevitable BUT moment. I am using my phone all day long usually without the luxury of being able to charge it. If I use it with the main screen then it is asking a bit much to expect to get a full business day out of the battery. I am therefore usually pushed down the road of having to use it on front screen only. Typing on the front screen is very much hit and miss as the keys are forced so close together that I am usually having to retype excessively. If the Fold had a better battery or was the, same size as a regular mobile when folded I would not contemplate anything else. As it currently stands I need to seek an alternative. I know that the Fold 5 is due to land maybe in the next 8 weeks. Rumours, are though that it will be the, same size when folded as the Fold 4 and this puts me back to where I am currently situated. Unless of course there are, significant battery improvements.
You really need to do a s23 fe review too
6:23 yeah... Lost mine on the first 3 days of having it, I was sketching a blueprint for one of my projects while at a Starbucks and I remember going to the bathroom and then heading home, then 15 minutes later notice the pen icon in the notification bar. I went back but it was gone. So I bought a new one and now I have the setting were it reminds you that the s pen is not in the phone. Also I had one of the exclusive colors vit they don't have s pen replacements for those colors so my black s pen stands out on my red phone.
One thing I can say about using a Samsung Galaxy, S20FE 5G in my case, is that I don't need to upload third party apps like photo and video editing, built QR scanner to name a few. I am looking at the getting the S23 Ultra as my next phone. I am already in the Samsung eco system. There is a UK seller with small discounts on some colours.
I have the FE 5G and I have just ordered the green 512GB S23 Ultra.
Samsung has some great offers at the moment with free earbuds and £200 cashback. It was hard not to consider it. Plus the 0% financing is an added bonus.
I'm hopefully going to get one at the end of September
I am totally excited about my S23U. By far the best smartphone I've bought so far. What I wish for in the future would be a flat display and maybe a front camera under the display if that works without any loss of quality. then it would really be perfect. for the next few years, the S23U will do it for now.
I love the curved display personally
Got the Phantom Black 1 TB model, and I absolutely love it. Best phone I've had in years 👌
