    Samsung’s new S24 series has been out for just over a month now - I bought the phones at launch which means I can not only give you a more thorough review of my experience so far, but I’ve also waited for the major software update Samsung just released. So we can now see if they’ve been able to fix any of those early issues (the camera update in particular is very interesting) and hopefully this in-depth review will give you a much closer reflection of what you can expect from the S24 Ultra.

    I have been using 23 Ultra since early March 2023. I will have to check the camera reviews after the release of the 25 Ultra and consider whether to change it. It seems that 23U users do not need to change to S24U because of the camera.
    Also, review video is the most professional, accurate, fair, and clear review video among the S23U / S24U comparison reviews on UA-cam. Thank you for creating and sharing, and please continue to provide in-depth comparative reviews after the 25 series is released.

    I have S23 Ultra. I have been tempted to buy S24 Ultra mainly for its flat screen and AI features. The latter ones are coming to S23 Ultra in no time and I am left with the love of flat screen. Does it worth buying S24 Ultra for this? I don’t think so. Thank you for your review even though it is not convincing enough - to make me change my mind.

    you plugged in the charger and it wasn't charging at full speed though? it did not say Fast charge 2.0 when you plugged it in.

    • @insidetechltd
      @insidetechltd  2 місяці тому +2

      That's actually a very good point and an oversight from me. Because the charger was out on my desk whilst filming this segment, I didn't actually plug it into the charger for the bit you see in the video. It was plugged into my standing desk just so I could film some capture, and that's why it didn't show "super fast charging". I should have shown it actually working and not just described it.
      The charging speeds you see just before the sponsor were taken using that exact Nexode charger though - I can confirm it does definitely support super fast charging!

    Really good review, including the content and an easy man/voice of delivery. What was especially helpful to me is that the review gave me something I couldn't find anywhere else. Specifically, s23 U power usage is better when in idle mode. I was spooked by that while comparing the two phones and was thinking I got a lemon (I received s24 U two days ago, and I'm testing it out before sending my s23 U as a trade-in or return s24). And many other things I thought to be a warning sign, which isn't the case, thanks to this review ((e.g., I got used to a brighter images in night shooting).

    A very concise, and straightforward video as always.. the amount of attention to detail is stellar, especially on the still shot side I say is best in class the amount of time and detailing is exceptional and well done
    On the charging side, I noticed that the 65wattscharger your display doesn't give the phone the super fast charging as the 25watt or 45watt Samsung charging gives you can tell from the charging display immediately after you plug it in, the ring light that the displayed supposed to shine a lighter green as suppose to the main green colour it displayed.
    the main green colour signifies a normal fast charge or even a normal charge but the light green signifies a super fast charge.
    Notice the difference also in the charge is the sound it makes, while you plug it in... the normal charge makes a single sound while the superfast makes a double sound put your ears to it and you will notice it if you have the older 25watts or 45watts you can check it out. But all the same, the 65watts charger is cool and can top up the phone as well.
    I also notice that Lily has a new companion he is such a beauty and
    lastly, the s24 ultra is a phone to carry just as you said it is a betterment update of near perfection of what the s23ultra had.
    And is been a while now my friend.

    • @insidetechltd
      @insidetechltd  2 місяці тому

      First of thanks a lot!
      Yes, someone else noticed this in the charging section too. Filming that section I had the 65 W charger out on the desk, so when I plugged in the phone to charge I was actually plugging it into my desk (which doesn't have Samsung's super fast charging). The actual Ugreen charger does support this though! Sorry for the confusion.
      Lilly and I are actually not big fans of the new 'companion'. It's my sister's puppy we're looking after temporarily, but he's not very nice to Lilly 😢
      Good to hear from you!

    Excellent video as usual!! I have a note 10 + and i am absolutely happy of every aspect of it. However recently it stopped getting security updates, so i am thinking of upgrading. 7 years of updates from Samsung is a huge plus for me and even if i was thinking of trying the ios platform for the first time, i think i will still go for the S24 Ultra. What would you suggest?

    One key difference I noticed right away is the noise reduction on the S23 Ultra seems to be better than on the S24 Ultra. My S23 does the same thing. Even when I record videos with loud sounds, you can still somehow hear the voices pretty clearly, which is a good and bad thing with the type of content that I create 😂

    Absolutely fantastic review, as usual. Certainly will hang on to my S23 U for another couple of years at least.
    I do have a gripe though, which is that you keep referring to "optical zoom". But there is absolutely no optical zooming here. The lenses are all fixed focal length, and the impression of "zooming" is simply switching between the different fixed focal length cameras, or digital zoom. An optical zoom is achieved with a lens with variable focal length, and almost no phones have a camera lens like this.

    • @insidetechltd
      @insidetechltd  2 місяці тому +4

      Thank you. I know what you’re saying about the zoom terms. But it’s just a lot easier to use those terms to describe the difference in the videos. Oh that's good then! To be honest I'm not against film because i'm not concerned so much about the glass breaking, I just want something to protect from those little, light scratches you get. So I expect the film might work well for that. It's expensive, but if you keep that anti-reflection coating...great!

    It's worth to note that S24 Ultra has the most advanced Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SOC, but Samsung's software limitation is holding back audio capabilities of the new CPU. No aptX Adaptive support? Seriously? They offer older codecs, even their own SSC, but not the latest tech. Let's demand Samsung unlock our phones potential! #aptXAdaptive #SamsungCommunity Samsung I started this topic on the community page a few days ago and it is getting lots of attention through Samsung Members. Let's make Samsung do something about it, showing that we care about our audio experience on our new flagship Smartphones!! We want to spread the awareness of this problem. Lack of APTx HD / older specs of APTx Adaptive or even LHDC for Lossless Audio that phone supports 24bit audio via FLAC is a problem that Samsung have been skipping since S23 Ultra release ignoring needs of many audio enthusiast. I would appreciate someone discussing this in a YT video to raise the awareness in the community of existing S24 Ultra owners and people looking to buy it.

    • @insidetechltd
      @insidetechltd  2 місяці тому +1

      I agree with this 💯. It's my single biggest problem with Samsung phones. It's amazing how many people will buy expensive earbuds and headphones (sometimes specifically for advertised features like 'High-Res' or even 'Lossless' audio) and don't realise that they won't be getting near that quality at all. To not even support aptX HD, let alone Adaptive, is really poor. If they didn't support LDAC, it would actually be even worse than iPhones (AAC on iPhone is actually fairly high quality).
      It seems companies are moving away from LDAC now though in favour of aptX Lossless / Snapdragon Sound. So Samsung users are set to fall even further behind. I understand that i'm affected more than a casual user an an audio enthusiast, not everyone is testing hundreds of audio products. But plenty of Samsung users have expensive headphones/earbuds that are being wasted right now.
      I agree, a full video should be done on this if it hasn't already!

    I hadn’t realised you have to pay for the ai features after a few years:(
    The s23 ultra is a great phone. I love the stylus. And might use dex one day. The speaker is disappointing compared to the iPhone 15 plus.
    I’m a bit disappointed by Samsung’s copying of Apple, features like scrollable widgets, focus modes, lock screen, icon layouts etc. Samsung were fined for copying Apple when their “how to copy Apple without making it look too obvious” manual was leaked.
    However, it helps consumers that Samsung does copy (Apple copies less from Samsung).
    I’d have preferred something less iPhone like from Samsung. A shame that LG left the mobile market - their audio approach and innovation was a stand out (ESS sabre quad dac, 3.5mm headphone socket, as card slot, removable second screen…).

    I've been using Xender for almost my whole life using a phone and now Quick Share has come to make it easier. Instead of always having to scan a QR code, I just leave Bluetooth and WiFi on and file sharing is always on the ready.
    As for the S24 series as flagship phones, I'd say they have more competition from Xiaomi, especially because Xiaomi flagships finally have 4K 60fps selfie video😂
    I know the advantages of Samsung but the Xiaomi 14 is pretty compelling with its much improved features and fast charging with an actual charger in the box.

    I beg to disagree .
    ....i have s22 and s23u and have extensively compared it with s24 ultra and there is barely anything noticably different in the camera department....
    S23 ultra is the sweet spot . I have my auto lens switching off in the camera assistant.
    Only place where s24 ultra shines is the 6x to 9.9x zoom but even that is not discerable ....after 10x s23 takes over ....and maintains the lead in all circumstances.
    Overall the changes are barely discernable at 500percent crop ...s24u does have better character recognition algorithm somewhat ...
    All samsung had to do was to put a 200mp sensor on 3x and 50mp sensor on 10x and that would be a real upgrade....
    For now s23 utra is much better value proposition...it has far less bugs in the camera department....

    • @insidetechltd
      @insidetechltd  2 місяці тому +3

      I did repeatedly say that you can't tell much of a difference without zooming in a lot. I even said the S23U can look better without zooming in. That already tells you the camera differences are mostly small. I also pointed out the S23 Ultra pulling ahead again at higher zoom levels.
      So I think i've been quite reasonable in my approach and pointed out both the pros and the cons. I appreciate that you revised your original comment, but to suggest I was trying to 'sell' the S24U and that the review wasn't neutral seems a little harsh. I have absolutely nothing to gain whatsoever in putting any form of bias into these videos. I bought the phones with my own money and worked extremely hard on a detailed comparison to to try and help as many people as I can 🤷‍♂️

    As a decade or so long samsung user (ever since the Galaxy S7) I have to say their photo quality has increasingly deteriorated (better night time results, worse daytime photos) and lately never really reached the one of the iphone, especially not the one of the 14 or 15pro. Just look at DXO results/review. I currently have an S22 and photo quality is abysmal, there is no other word to describe it. My g/f's iphone 14 pro is vastly superior in most aspects. Don't even start me on video. Samsung's face detection is a joke, why do they even bother and the fingerprint reader doesn't work half the time with a screen protector, even with screen sensitivity increased! Battery life is shoddy. - Year after year I give them another chance and usually am taken in by features, most of which I never use! In addition to all of this, as if it wasn't enough, us Europeans also get screwed with a processor which usually comes second to the Qualcom derivative. This year my chosen handheld is the iphone Pro. The only thing I still need to figure out is Max or smaller Pro. I had two Notes in succession and then changed to the S22 because of size. Occasionally, but not often, I miss the larger size. More often than not, especially in summer, I'm glad for the pocketability of the smaller phone. Now the pen of the 'Note' is a great gadget and one I did use occasionally but not enough to make this the feature I really need. Plus the S24 Ultra is an absolute brick. Soon enough you'll find yourself wishing for a smaller phone. 'Are you just pleased to see me ... '? Even on the older Notes, the phones were more uncomfortable to hold, pocket and operate one handed. At least they've gotten rid of the horrible curved screens but the sharp corners are clearly form over function and will make pocketability, or what's left of it, nigh on impossible.
    As to operating systems, honestly, I prefer Android but once you accept the limitations on ios, its ok and you appreciate how good the things you have work. I use a Macbook Pro M2 and so far resisted the iphone for stupid reasons, it's changing now.
    Samsung = Jack of all trades ... master of none.

    Seems to me it’s a load of software bullshit. So if they bring an update out for the s23 yeah remember that phone they don’t bring updates out for ? How many did it get from release? Not many. So it seems to me the s24 is just a software update for replacing the s23 when all your getting is a flatter display and ai which is software from google. You have the front to say the s24 is better when you should be pulling it down. I mean people pay good money for these phones to have them replaced by the same model with software enhancements. It’s a joke mate, stand up for people and tell these companies to stop bringing out phones that are not different. By the way did you know there is very little metal on the outside and most of the phone is plastic inside holding that very thin metal together? The s23 with a software update which Samsung never brings would make it just like the s24. And they talk about green and these companies keep making pointless phone to make more mess in this world. Phones to me should come out ever 3 years. Let’s see if you get your 7 years of updates on this phone ? I bet you get very few because when the s25 comes out this phone will be forgotten for updates. About time something was done about this in the prices they charge for a phone to be a 1 year wonder. Update the s23 with a decent update and it would be just like the s24 but we can’t have that because Samsung just want to fuck you over with their bullshit.

    "if you add a screen protector, the screen becomes as reflective as your screen protector is, which is a real shame"
    you make it sound as if it was something that would be considered as an "error" from samsung lol
    i don't like this design, the flat screen gives a less premium aspect, the bezels are way too noticeable compared to older models
    otherwise, i like the fact that the phone is a little shorter, but those completly rectangular, boxy edges on the whole s24 series doesn't add anything good in term of ergonomics, it is just harder to hold and less comfortable, how can people say it is better ?
    overall, your video is good, it is nice to watch, but it really feels like you are biased towards the s24U
    for example, you didn't show that much very long zoom comparisons shots between S23U and S24U (during day time), and there are a lot of details losts on the long range zooms on S24U that you didn't talk about either
    furthermore, you can completly choose the phone not to switch automatically lenses by deactivating the "auto lens switching" feature in Camera assistant, no need to go in Pro Mode. This made the s23u look very bad in this review, when you actually have the option pretty easily to modify this behavior (BUT the fact that you made this error does show that a lot of people that only want point and shoot capabilities without playing with any settings will encounter this problem)
    but again, my comment could sound harsh (sorry for this), but your video is well done, you've compared pretty much in depth everything "important", it feels professionnal, it is really enjoyable and does give a good idea of everything, so thanks for this test
    it just feels like you are maybe a little biased towards the S24U
    now my opinion about the s24: I prefer the curved screen (design wise), but the most important : I HATE THOSE FLAT EDGES, not more ergonomic, less comfortable, less secure to hold...
    I will go over to honor next time I buy a phone I think, because I really hate the fact that samsung copy this much apple (even if there is still the very very very high customization aspect and everything that samsung offer, and that apple can't even think about giving to their users) + there are some things that are annoying, like samsung notes being now only compatible with samsung books computer, which is a limitation that did not exist before
    I don't want to support those bad commercial practices, which is sad

      I'm not suggesting that the screen protector issue is an 'error' from Samsung. Simply that it's a shame you've got such a great feature there and it will be spoiled by almost all screen protectors. Most people are going to apply a screen protector. And most people will not be buying Samsung's anti-reflective protector - it was a point worth pointing out.
      The S24 Ultra is still boxy...but so is the S23 Ultra. The reason I think it's an ergonomic improvement is the smoother sides. I didn't say that it's better than the S24 and S24+.
      I did specifically show longer range zoom examples where the S23 Ultra performs better than the S24 Ultra. There is a specific segment of the video dedicated to that. This is not a camera comparison video only, I've covered all aspects of the phones but still went in-depth into the camera in this video too. I think it's a little unfair to call this 'biased' when I specifically featured the detail that you claim I didn't.
      Highlighting that the S23 Ultra auto lens switch issue may make the phone look bad...but that's on Samsung for not having this behaviour by default. Most users will encounter this issue, so it was sensible to point out this behaviour. You need to download the camera assistant app separately and make this change yourself. A lot of people won't know this. And if you do know this already...what's the problem? You can solve the issue I described yourself. Remember that I also made a specific point of switching to the 10x manually and talked about the improvement this makes. It might have been a bit unfair if I hadn't done this...but I did. I highlighted the default behaviour, and then later made another comparison where I switched the lens over myself. Even when using the 10x lens, there is a still a question of its quality vs the S24U's 5x lens - it's only fair that I pointed this out too.
      You're more than welcome to disagree with my opinions, such as the flat display, but I think i've been quite balanced in this review and to suggest there is any bias here is unwarranted. I think you might be trying to find it. I bought both of these phones myself, tested them thoroughly, and shared with you my experience to try and be as helpful as I could to people. I've got absolutely no incentive at all to introduce any bias...why would I?

      hi, thanks for your long answer, didn't mean to "trigger" you (if it did ? lol)
      about the boxy thing, I was talking about this on the larger scale (which include the whole S24 series and design choices made by samsung), you had the s22+ / s23+ for example that had flat displays, but nice edges that were more comfortable by being a little rounded, better ergonomically and overall in terms of usability
      for long ranges zoom, I'll have to watch the video again, I have to admit I watched a lot of reviews before yours, maybe was I a little tired / mad at some reviewers already, which made my judgement false ? if this is the case I'm sorry lol
      for the auto lens switching, that's as I said : good in a certain way that you highlighted it since this is out of the box behavior, but you only talked about the fact that you had togo "in pro mod and add a lot of steps" for it to be fixed, but again it is good that you had this out of the box "default behavior" setting and that you showed the wrong behavior, just that you then did not give talked about the known and working fix
      anyway, as I said your review is professionnal, pretty in depth, enjoyable to watch, and again if there was no incentive to introduce any bias (which I never said was your goal, I was just saying that maybe, unconsciously, you were biased, I was not accusing you of trying to be dishonest), so sorry if I had a wrong judgement / if I have been too critical
      thanks for your answer and keep up the good work (yes again this is a good work you're providing), and sorry if you took it badly@@insidetechltd

      Haha, no. You won't last long as a UA-camr if you get triggered easily! But obviously people will read these comments and I don't want anyone to get the wrong idea. So I wanted to take the opportunity to clarify the points you made. And thanks for coming back and replying in the way you did, I appreciate it.
      I totally agree about the S23 and S23+ models and their comfort. But i'm gonna talk about this in the next video - this one was purely about the Ultra models, that's why I didn't mention it.
      Yes, please do go back if you want to hear about the S23 Ultra's zoom benefits - it is an important point that the 10x lens still has some advantages too. But you're also right about the auto-lens feature. I think the best case scenario would have been for me to mention that as well. That would have covered all bases, so i'll improve that next time.
      I think it's just important for me to address claims of bias because...unfortunately there is actually a lot of biased UA-cam videos out there. Some people will make dishonest videos for clicks or money - and I want to separate myself from all of that. If you're not being honest, if you don't have your integrity..what's the point in making videos? That isn't going to help anyone.
      Anyway, I genuinely appreciate the apology and kind words - I want this channel to be a place people enjoy coming to and find useful 👍🏼

      don't worry dude, I am the one who has to thank you, since you took the time to answer politely, calmly, in a detailed manner to raise all your points and to carify yourself, towards me which had a wrong judgement (obviously) for whatever reason (would not have behaved like you if it was the opposite roles xD)
      so sorry again and thank YOU, I'll follow you for sure from now on !@@insidetechltd
