So enjoyed the video with your mom. What a precious lady.
Jim, when you were describing spreading manure and wind conditions I was cracking up! You’re funny! It’s really amazing that you let yourself get coated in manure for us! You have my unending loyalty.
You had manure EVERYWHERE !! The "joys" of farming !!
Baron stepped into his place to be hooked up so very politely. Such an improvement with him.
Bill just takes the lead and starts backing up and turning - he has taught Baron well.
Jim this is a comment and not a question .Spreading fresh dairy cow manure with wind at your back is a one time learning experience . Thanks for the demonstration 😊😊😊
Oh my 17 likes .😊😊😊
Thanks again for your time. It's always nice to get to tag along.
Well I see Skippy is back from the Vets and looks no worse for the trip. Glad you are respectful of William's church and try not to video his face. He doesn't need any trouble from his church elders. Thank you for that Jim and Brenda. The Good Lord has BLESSED you both greatly. God bless and keep safe.
Oh funny!!! Spreading manure with the wind. A slow day on the farm!! 😂😂😂. Priceless.
Poor Jim. The things he does for UA-cam. Gotta love i when he takes one for the team.
Good day! Thank you for explaining how your equipment works, I watch very closely and try to see how everything’s connected. You’re the professor and we are showing up for class.
I think it is cool how the horses know which stall is theirs.
God Bless the young man that is trying to get started with horse farming.
That young man is Amish with many skills, well started already in all areas from farming to carpentry and a great boon for Jim, who only has to make sure things are done his way with the horses, as the Amish have their own ways in that department. Jim too is picking up some Amish tricks.
@@louisecassidy5991I think @joqlady is referring to the young man who asked about getting into farming with horses, the one Jim was giving advice to.
Jim should be awarded the Nobel Prize for his knowledge of horses and for preservation/learning about how to use horses in forestry and agriculture. A very important knowledge to preserve for the future of humanity, comfort and living.
Weather is important to all farmers and Ranchers, rain, snow, wind, cause they need to take care of their animals and land.
Yaya another video always starts my day off right ❤love spending time on the farm with you Jim and Brenda , love the horses so beautiful !!! thanks for letting us go with you while doing your daily chores so interesting to watch …..thanks for explaining things so well on how the equipment works on the horses love you guys to bits❤
I was amused to see how keen the horses were to back the spreader away than they were to back up for hitching. You did say Baron was hungry. 😄👍
You know Brenda and Jim you are spoiling us with your additional videos! I am enjoying the videos everyday now, and like others have said in the comments I appreciate you both❣️
I enjoy each and everyone of your videos! Love all the horses! Enjoy watching what you do with them!
Thank you!! ❤️❤️
My daughter said once that she wanted her son to be a meteorologist. She said that was the only job where you could be wrong every day and still get paid.
Another good interesting video. Thank you
Jim, I'm an old Farmer!! You have to know the weather! Rule #1, Never pee into the wind! Rule#2, always drink upstream from the herd!🤣
😂
Jim sacrifices so much to entertain us viewers 😂Getting covered in manure!
My God Jim, you didn't have to do this!!!!!
Kind of reminds me of the saying “when the s**t hits the fan”. 😄
Well, I'm glad the manure wasn't wet & sticky!! Guess it's good to know which way to go!! 😂
That was good advice for that young man. Great video! Oh, I always love getting your newsletter! Just thought I'd mention that!! 😊 💕
Jim’s a meteorologist of common sense😂😅😂
Master Teamster !!
hahahahahaha oh no !
I hope the school bus didn't see it...ha
that was a nice load of wood...
You guys are wonderful!
Jim did you ever think of opening up your farm to mentor people that would like to work with horses
I think what you’s do is amazing I like watching your videos thank you for sharing them ✌🏼❤️✌🏼
That's why Vermont farmers spread their fields in circles!
Thank You Jim & Brenda !
Jim and Brenda, It was a pleasure watching you driving Bill and Baron when you hitching them to the fore cart and how Baron with Bill supporting him really steps over the pole so well. Of course with you driving them it makes a great difference. Your calm but firm voice commands work like a clock as well. Your comments to the young man who has a desire to get into farming with horses should serve the young man well. If he listens . Having a Horse Mentor to share the necessary knowledge for the care and feeding of horses along with instruction on harnessing and teaching you good driving skills . Along with selecting and purchasing the necessary horse drawn equipment and how to maintain it and work it as well. It takes years to develop and learn to learn to work a farm. Unless You were born to it.
Jim's advice to you finding a outside source of income is great advise as well. Also as Jim mentioned if your in an area that's conducive to Sleigh or Wagon or Carriage Rides . for an additional job for the horses and extra income as wellFor example personally I drove a 3 seater carriage for Weddings and Anniversaries and etc. Which was booked through my wife's flower shop I also worked in the pipeline industry as a fulltime job which bought and purchased my horses and equipment and along with a well equipped Horse Farm. It took me over 20 years of hard work to accomplish the mission and if I had to do it all over again with what learned and enjoyed, With what I know now I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.Good Luck Young Man in following your dream.
That young man is Amish and the only thing Jim needs to teach him is Jim's way of doing things.
louise, I think he is talking about the young man at the end of my video that had a question.
@@WorkingHorsesWithJim That's Correct Brenda
Love the way you back your steeds they know just what you want to do it's just lovely to watch thanks.
Politicians had that manure spreading thing figured out many years ago😂
Good advice Jim. Couldn’t see the links, too dark. Thank you for sharing. 🐴🐴
The sacrifices you make for us viewers are impressive! Lol, I appreciate everything you and Brenda do to put out these videos. Thank You!
Thank you beautiful video and once again informative ❤️ 😊
Had to laugh when you said you were going to spread manure with the wind at your back. I laughed because it brought back the memory of the one and only time I made that mistake. Covered completely.
WOW At 8:55 I did not know the horses had a high and low range...
Hey Jim, I always wondered how a manure spreader worked. I've put plenty of manure in a spreader like yours, but now I know it works, 😅 and to not spreading INTO the wind. 😅 Good farming sense. im really proud when I identify each of th horses, by name. Thanks for saying who we're with. We had a 19 hh Belgian Draft for 8 yrs., but I never knew anything about th harnesses or how they worked. Im paralyzed now, [MS]. Living across from U, along th Vermont/NH boarder We just rode DIESEL. Now we have a beautiful cart, incase I he gets me another. Being w y'all on the farm makes us feel content n happy .😊 😊 God bless yall, horses, kitty's n cows😅. Where was Ken today?. 😊. Hi Brenda. Love questions and answers at the end.❤ wish you'd just let film roll another five minutes. 😊❤❤❤❤❤❤
haha or an hour...😅
Jim, I would have taken your word for wind direction!
Jim thank you for explaining about the wind and manure spreading. Not on a farm but have learned so much from watching your channel..thanks to Abby..
Skippy will be quiet for about a day as going to the vets always made are dogs very quiet and we let them rest. Kept them quiet and no playing at all till the following day. I noticed how Skippy stood back from the horses and no cat chasing. God bless you Jim and Brenda...also William too...
Love the closing sound of the horse clopping..🐎
Awesome video Jim/Brenda!
Thank you for the daily videos
it's great to hear ya both talk while you're working on the horses.good time with you..c..s
I think the reason Ken likes his old stall better could be that the straight stalls have a wood floor, opposed to the box stalls concrete floor. The wood is easier on the legs than the concrete.
Jim your log scaling system works good for you .(from a retired scaler). Plus I love the fact your trucker with the " cherry picker " is charging a flat fee.😊😊😊
I apreciate your interesting videos. See you later!
Hi everyone, in UK the "crupper" is often used on horses, ponies snd donkeys who lack a good wither - to halt the saddle from riding up onto the necks.
The crupper is a tool much forgotten for the saddle horse, scuttle downhill much more confidently. When these horses back a load, crupper comes into play when they tuck hind legs under them. Jim calls it a "crouper", likely the original word as it lies along the croup.
Thank you 😊 always enjoy your videos. I was looking on Craigslist at horses I can't have lol and saw a 19yr old percheron for sale looked like in Vermont. Thought maybe you just needed another 😂❤ God bless and take care
Almost 97k!! Hopefully by planting season you guys will hit the 100k mark! Is Jim hoping for a Filly or a Colt when Lady delivers? It’s almost time for another weight and time contest!!
Ever hear of The Old Farmers’ Almanac? They were actually pretty accurate. The old time sailors were pretty accurate too!
I have to say Jim that fixing the chain on a dry empty spreader under the cover of a roof seems pretty easy. My personal experience has always been that the chain breaks under the load of manure on a rainy or snowy day!
I sure hope Jim got paid for this video!
About ten years ago I bought a manure spreader for next to nothing because the prior owner was frustrated that they were always getting pelted by horse turds. For some reason it has never happened to me!
Jim, how does Baron rate in comparison to all the other horses you've had? He seems to be a key player in your operation.
I agree...2 foals and lots of hard work
I've wondered that same question. And I've wondered if Jim is as pleased with the Suffolk breed as he would have been if he'd stayed with either Belgian or Percheron breed? I remember when he got Duke and Earl I was a little disappointed he didn't stay with Belgians or Percherons because I'd never heard of Suffolk Punch. Now I absolutely love them after seeing how hard they work and how they want to please. Plus they are gorgeous to watch too!
@@territn8871When he got Duke and Earl we saw the sire. That was the clincher for me, as for Jim. Was a no-brainer when Barron popped up for sale. He is most impressed with the breed.
@@louisecassidy5991 When they went to get Baron, I thought he was the most beautiful horse I'd ever seen!!! The way he pranced as Jim was leading him to load in the trailer, I could tell Baron was going to be one great horse!!!! He's gorgeous isn't he!!!!!!❤
I'm no expert, but those are good-looking logs!!!
How old is William. He is such a hard worker. Very nice young man.
23😊😊😊
I really enjoy the Q and A. Question:Jim, have you ever trained horses that haven't been handled from a really young age? I see the seamless way you have integrated Duke and Earl. How much does it help to handle and have the horses in the barn every day? I've worked with riding horses quite a lot and I'm amazed at how docile and tractable your drafts are from a young age. I'm not sure how much is the daily handling and how much is the draft genetics.
Thank you for the detailed video on the manure spreader apron. I was wondering about how that worked
I think it's just that the horse's are facing a brick wall, no window. But yes I'm sure they are use to it.
The unending job of manure control. I'm sure that the feet of your logs made sense to some people but it was lost on me. Lol
When a horse can get it's head low the horse can buck so the croup ( spelling?) keeps them from doing that also.
Well done you
Good work
My Grandfather was a railroad engineer back before WW2 and beyond. One of his favorite sayings was mottled sky not long dry.
As to that aspiring horse / farmer...two things I've thought about. What an expense it must be simply to take care of horse's feet! When I was a kid horse-shoes cost $8.00! Several decades ago I heard it cost $80.00 for a mere trim! And that was on a smaller horse. It has to be a major expenditure today with draft horses. The other thing I've wondered is how many acres of hay does it take to feed one draft horse? Yearly? If you grow your own hay. Think of veterinary care. Scares me.😮$$$$.
Another great video, be well,
How does the song go, you don't tug on Superman's cape, you don't spit into the wind and you don't mess around with Jim 😂 we could tweak the lyrics to say don't spread manure into the wind😉
I agree with your advice to the young man. My first thought was to do everything you can with where-ever you're at and thats exactly what you said. Very good advice for anybody with a dream. Can we get a quick look at Bree?
Farm wisdom.
Brenda, did you say we could still sign on for the newsletters? I have tried several times and it tells me it can’t take any new names. I hope I’m wrong. We love learning and watching you both so much… and @Drill and a Dream.
Jim, do you have wooden planks inside the boxstall where Ken stays? You probably heard cement is hard on horses' hoofs, joints, and does horses' 😮sleep stand up. I heard
At the end of your videos you have that "clicking" sound. Reminds me of 60 minutes and the old timex clicking sound.
Jim have you ever worked outside of logging? Brenda are enjoying retirement?
1st thing a boy scout learns when camping - don't pee into the wind.
Great video
ok...here we go ..spreading manure the wrong way just for the crew here to see what happens......you the man Jim. Hey, that log truck driver sure did a good job unloading those logs with his 'Truck attached 'log picker upper cherry picker.....' just kidden ,,calm down everybody. lol.Man I bet Skippy is glad to be out of that car.Lov all of ya'll here. Be sweet today..lov from South Alabama.
We should be never to old to learn something new .😊😊😊
We're are you located to make a plan to come and meet you Jim and Brenda and all of your horses sometime and bring apples and some harness to have you look at from my many years in working with my Dad at Paul Smiths College over 40 years Thank you for showing your videos in working draft horses Miss doing it everyday Ed Hoyt
Love the video
🐎👍🐎
Jim Question for you do you use grass harrows after you have put the dung out all winter to break it up along side take any dead grass out and premote new growth for the start of the growing season
i have to say your a brave fella going the wrong way while spreading the dung we only do it once and we learn not to do that twice
Baron has come a long way in quite a short period of time since the first vid of his training on going into the cart and stepping over the main pole
could we say hes a old hand at it now
well done shows what time and repitition can do
Hello Jim, how long do u "cook the manure" to make sure that it is effective in fertilizing the land. Thanks.
The moral of today's story...never spread manure with the wind at your back! 😃😃😃😃😃
How many cats do you actually have?
Many greetings and best wishes for you both and your lovly horses from germany!
My guess is 7 . Jim and Brenda are your cats spayed and neutered .Whew they can multiply fast .😊😊😊
Amish people are on camera most times they interact with the Englishers. Parking lots and stores are loaded with cameras, not to mention places the Amish work, like RV factories. Sadly, that's the way it is.
Jim, the crouper is a tool for the horse, he can use his whole spine and tail to hold the load, and when backing. It concerns me somewhat that it is connected to the overcheck that prevents reaching for grass (which I know is not tight) but if they tuck their rumps could it come into play?
The Snowy River men I rode with in Jindabyne (Australia) in the 70's advised, when I began breeding their mountain ponies, to always keep the crupper on. I am talking saddle horses here. I soon found out why. They can scuttle downhill without mincing, they balance the rider using the spine and tail and nothing is bearing on the shoulder blades. Better in the bush. The Portuguese always use a crouper (crupper) and they train the best in the world, spine and tail all balancing tools, an advantage long forgotten. Word of warning - crupper must be introduced right at the starting!
excellent
You don't want a harness horse reaching for grass. If they step through the lines, or even catch a line on the neck yoke, it can be catastrophic. Even if they just get their head low enough that you can't control them from the carriage or implement, you can have a disaster. That is pretty much the reason for an overcheck or sidecheck on the average horse, unless you are trying to get Hackney or Saddlebred head carriage, or trying to keep a Standardbred from breaking gait. The only reason I ever had checks on my harness was to make sure they didn't reach down to graze.
Xso enjoying these videos
Did you put the rear end on your trailer into road gear? Never really looked at your trailer that close before. Is it a rear axle from a pick up truck?
Hey guys
We love your show. I always pick up something from you
What kind off wood did you get?
Thanks and keep up the great work
White Pine 😊😊😊
Why do you keep the horses water off to the side and no buckets in there stalls?
Never I have seen so much…” shit“ flying through the air, Great job!!😊
Pretty sure you can get those links at Diamond Drives in Fulton, IL ......my hometown and previous employer
Jim, this is Jeff Cutting
I was wondering what kind of blades do you use on your sawmill (carbide tips or regular) and how many logs can you saw before you have to change the blade?
💖
Jim I have a lot of people wanting me to give rides and do functions but haven't been able to secure insurance . Do you have insurance or what do you suggest ?
you may not be covered in manure but i cant get it out from between my teeth and hair!! I hate sitting back there!!!!!!! I had to hold my nose the whole time!
Hiw did the camera not get covered
it sort of did
Does Bree have a stall?
Bree and Duke share the stall where the cats are fed plus whe the oats are at in the big freezer container.
How many years till Ken retires and what will he do then
