- Today I am answering a question I have gotten a few times... Which horse was the best horse I ever had? William and I are also working on fixing and making new raised beds for our neighbor and other odd jobs around the farm!
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horse farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

The reason you have had so many good horses is because you're a good guy!
You are the reason your horses are so good.
Don’t talk bad about my Ken, he’s perfect, I’m sure of it! He’s just a good good boy.
Hallo Jim, n Brenda, So glad you have Wm. riding Ken to get around easily. It's nice seeing Wm working along side of you Jim. 😊 now if only the video could end with the same smoothness as it had started w, (in this video) Love you 😊 God bless ❤
Animals understand more than we think they do. The old saying is that even a sleeping dog knows the difference between being kicked and being stumbled over. Animals know/sense who genuinely loves them. The Gordon's animals all know that the Gordons love them!
Every one who has a horse or wants to have a horse needs to understand that it is an animal that is almost in self-preservation mode even if standing calmly .
Good job guys! You are a great neighbor Jim helping with the raised gardens. William is so strong carrying 3 of those 2x6's, impressive!!!
I would think Jim was well paid . 😊😊😊
I got my eyes on Baron! He impresses me! No matter what he's doing he gets that trot going!
That jog is just impatience, he's just starting to dig in and really pull.
William has been a big plus for you
William is getting a pay check . He has a wife Sarah and a new baby .So things are working both ways .😊😊😊
@@chips4974 😮
I find that every horse has their own quirks and personality ❤
I would think that Bill would rank near the top of the list he is an awesome Belgium! It's really comical to see how he is so lost without his pal Lady. 😊
Lost???? I'm missing something
They were always hitched together for work, but heavily in foal she's not doing hard work at the moment 😊
I love when you are in the barn and the horses butts are all in the aisle
Loved seeing your Mom yesterday! Delightful lady! I’m a hobby bee keeper in north Ga I catch swarms in traps similar to what y’all have . Wish you the best in all your endeavors!
We need to see more pictures of your horses from days gone by. Love to hear about all of them.
I have had horses for almost 62 years now, but like Jim I can say I have had a number of really good horses, luckily not a single bad one, and still some stick out which were extra special for various reasons.
Jim great your helping out William 😊. Everything in life make a circle ⭕️ for sure Jim and Brenda 😊.
William, able to use an electric drill but not a phone. Got to love the Amish.
Amish are a misunderstood group .William can use a phone , he just doesn't own one . 😊😊😊
Some Amish have a phone, they build an outhouse looking type shed and have one phone that they share with their family, friends which live next door or nearby. The different sects have different rules. Depends on your location.
Exactly
Printaboul = Gaëtan (Quebec city)
... Jim ... and Brenda, all those little details that you had to the videos, is what give interest to your channel. The horses personnality, is one of my favorite subject.
i like ken myself by just watching the videos.he is a perfect horse to do anything around a farm

Love the short Q&A videos and I am sure that you have had a lot of great horses. You are BLESSED to have William there to help you and he's a hard working young man. Glad that the engine on the sawmill is going to be repaired soon. Helping the neighbor with his raised beds was a blessing to him. God bless and keep safe.
I would think that Jim was well paid for his lumber and William's wages plus a little profit for himself . Jim's got bills to pay .😊😊😊
Working Jims with Horse
I was watching a plow day on UA-cam yesterday. Along with tractors, they also had horses and mules plowing. I was wondering how you set a straight furrow when starting a field.
Also, I enjoyed the visit with your mother. Thank you for that.
Ken is a teacher like Jim.
I really enjoyed a day w yall n Wm. Making raised beds. Sare is greening up n drying. You have two young horses, one less, would you Plz consider selling one for another Percheron?.
Wow! I didn't know Ken has been with you since that young!! Did you buy him at that age? Interesting about Mac & Rocky. I think the reason you've had so many good horses is because of you. They trust you & I've heard that when a horse trusts you completely, he'll do almost anything you ask! I don't know that from experience, but from watching your videos, i think it's true! Looking forward to your next q&a!! 💕
So right!
Bill is such a faithful horse ❤
Razed Beads are a Great way to Garden, I prefer them over Pots. Sadly, thy collect weed just like non razed Beads. My Question is, with all the Stone in your aria, do some folks make Razed Beds with Ston walls over Boards that rot out quickly?
We have lots of Sandstone and Basalt Stone (Vranic Rock with Christel Geodes inside them). Most have a Pores Surface and make Beautiful Stonework. Slow heavy hard Work like any Masonry Brick laying Work. Have a wonderful Day!. Ray King
In 5 or 10 years Jim's answer on who's your favorite horse,,,,, he might just say Baron.
Now ask the horses who their favorite owners are,,,,,,, It'll be Jim and Brenda!
The colors of the wagon and Jim's jacket and the horses and and green grass poking thru with the brush is so pretty. (I am an artist.-so I see these things)
And I thought my farm had rocks!!!😀
Hi Brenda love has Jim got a back injury or hip problem?just noticed in this video he was favouring his back or hip, thank you love xxxxx
Does Ken always save his gas for when Brenda comes around? Pull my finger. 😂
Mark I asked my dad once if he missed his work horses .Answer " not the farting in my face " I think he did . Nice comment it made me smile .😅😅😅
🧐nice critique on horses, sawmill 👍
Love these short informative video's thank you ❤
I'm so glad you were still able to use the sawmill. You really produced a lot of lumber.
My god your grass turning green fast you are probably a month ahead in the 709 in Canada 🍁.
Jim how is the health of your horse pulling competitors. Gerry LaClair , Billy Thomas and Bango brothers . Good luck to all . I may make one of them this summer . Got sun burnt at Gouverneur last summer and a new hat at Madrid . St Lawrence Power and Equipment show . Entrance $5 and a hat for $15 . How great that and good luck to everyone .😊😊😊
👍👍
At least William is not opposed to using battery-powered tools. Much quicker than hammer and nails. What kind of lumber for the edges?
I like your answer session at the end of these recent videos.
Hi , I also agree to have wheels on that wagon for more than just one reason!
Bill and Baron are being trained for the horse pulls this summer . No wheels .😊😊😊
That final pass or passes in some cases, are critical to the integrity of the root pass. Without that mass added to bind the outer edge of the reinforcing plate to the member being reinforced there is a very real risk of tear-off, which is a REAL mess. Bitter experience as a young welder more than fifty years ago speaking here. Had a reinforcing plate on a drill rig tear loose during the attemptedextraction of a stuck drilm stem. Nearly killed one man, did hospitalize him after falling 80 feet onto an operating diesel engine. Kicked myself for years over that. . .
MY favorite horse is BARON
12:28 I hear that you have to ride or drive horses in a way that the cars are not coming from behind them because sometimes they are not expecting cars to come from behind, and it tends to spook them
Nice Lumber
I had a really nice mare who would get anxious every time a car or truck passed her. In her case it was the air pressure wave coming off of the passing vehicle that would startle her. Sometimes it can hit pretty hard depending on how fast the car or truck is going, even from a decent distance. Perhaps this is Ken's issue as well.
Hey Jim and Brenda I stopped by your logging job today at PSC off of Rt 86 Still hope to come and meet you and your draft team soon
friday we hope
Jim , Brenda and William, Another great video on working on the farm and around the barn and sawmill . It's great to see you helping out your neighbor repairing their raised garden beds. .Then preparing a load of lumber for delivery . The sled is a great tool to be used in providing a load to condition young horses and also give the older horses some exercise.
It's great for you to share a story about Ken being nervous on the public road when bigger vehicles pass by. As we both realize that all horses are individuals and they don't react the same Somethings a horseman can deal with issues with some time and management and patience . I agree with you with the large group of horses I've owned over 40 years It's hard to pick one but if I had to choose it would be my wonderful Percheron Mare Dolly . She like your Belgian Gelding Mack were reliable and great natured and willing workers.
That is what Brenda needs. Raised Beds
Brenda already has 2 raised beds plus her new hot house bed . So yes if she wanted more she knows where to find the men to build them for her .😊😊😊
❤
Jim, is it about time for some gravel on the farm yard driveways?
w
Why use a sled / i call it "a stone boat" in summer?? Why not a wheeled wagon???
I need you to pull that sled on grass and snow
Hey Jim and Brenda, I have a question , first of all i have no idea what it takes to work horses. But instead of dragging a wagon that has to be heavy. Why not have wheels on your wagons . Seems that it would be easier on the horses and your wagons.. God bless🌹❤️🙏
Those are called a sled or a sleigh or a scoot...😂😂
Jim uses the sleds and scoot to exercise the horses to keep them in shape.
Mack sounds like a great horse. As a follow-up question. Who is your favorite and/or best horse you currently have?
Jim and William drilling a dream .lov from South Alabama.
Q. About how much pressure (I appreciate it changes from moment to moment) do you have on the lines when just going along as you were today? I see your point of balance is most often leaning back. I deduce from that you are either using the lines as part of your balance point, or you have very strong back/tummy muscles. I would love to know what is acceptable pressure?
I have seen it done (with a riding bridle) with an old brass weight hook tied to an object and the bit and reins attached to that with the human putting the same "feel" on as if a horse was wearing the bit.
Thanks.
👍🏼🐴
Is it easier to pull that the sled on snow than grass
Jim what is the most weight you ever crossed at a horse pull and what kind of horses how heavy
Based on appearance alone, the welds on the excavator boom are insufficient to retain the reinforcing plates. I fear ypu will have trouble in this area again.
I noticed that also, it looks like he did a real nice job but ran out of time and money to do the filling weave pass to fill in the fillet. Nice work though, amazing how he straightened that bent-over plate. Good eye.
Brian's repairs are under warranty.
How is Lady doing? Would like to see her. When is her due date? She is a beautiful mare! How's her "youngin" doing? Haven't seen her are you doing anything with her? God Bless
According to Brenda, Lady is due around end of May to first part of June.
I when I see all the mud in the barn yard, I wonder how you go in and out of the house. You must have to take your shoes off.😊
Love the Q&A
How did you and Brenda meet?
At a Bible study group .😊😊😊
Jim, in your field that still has tiling ridges, what if you used your scoot weighed down with rock pulled as close to each side then finally over center of trench to smooth the dirt?
Can William use the screwdriver/drill?
William operates the sawmill and wood splitter so I would think a cordless would not be a big problem .😊😊😊
How old does a horse have to get before you add him/her to the "Our Horses" section of your YT page? The reason I ask is because Bree is not included yet.
Usually 4 yrs of age.
💖
Anyone know when Lady is due with her next foal?
Brenda does . She told Jim and us viewers on the last video .😊😊😊
@@chips4974 Thank you. I must have missed that one.
Your welcome
👍👍👍
We were wondering if William is married?
Yes and his wife's name is Sarah plus a baby . Sarah makes beautiful handmade quilts .😊😊😊
I am wondering- can you use the sleigh all year round? Will this not damage them? I always thought that the sleigh was only for snow, and the rest of the year- it was "cart time".
The boards for the raised beds might last longer if you charred them first (burnt wood method (shou sugi ban).
Good idea, the art of hardening wood with fire is a amazing thing.
Why don't you get rid of all that water you have in your yard
How many acres is your farm...🥰
Jim's not going to like this but I think he has about 450 acres . 2 farms . But a lot of his farms are swamp and trees and rocky pasture . So total acres doesn't mean much except to the tax man . How many acres is crop land is more important to Jim and Brenda. 😊😊😊
Why do you use a sled instead of a trailer or wagon (with wheels)? Seems like it would be easier to pull.
Tanks i will remenber is name, Mack
Who has the house in your pasture did you sell some land
Jim, did your girls ever had horses of their own? If so, what breed and their names? Were they horse crazy like any other girls would do? Do you think your daughters will carry on having horses of their own?
Hey...........the ol cherry picker is fixed.
You mean mini excavator. 😊😊😊
@@chips4974 you can call them either.
Jim's mini excavator has a digger head with a thumb for grabbing logs . A cherry picker has a claw for picking up logs . So conclusion yes both can move logs but they are not the same thing .😊😊😊
@@chips4974 Yea.....................HEADS ARE EXCHANGEABLE.....May I ask how old you are and what types of businesses you have been in? I am 73yo, My dad was a pipeline welder and I was around cherry pickers my entire life.........I also worked for Brown & Root Construction Co. after I graduated college...and I AM MOST DEF aware of machinery. Kohler should reimburse you for all the time and money lost from A BRAND NEW MOTOR breaking down. smh.
No Kohler is repairing motor for free under warranty. 😊😊😊
That's not covered under anyone's warranty
@@chips4974 right...........AND THEY SHOULD...and he also should be reimbursed for time lost.
@@JamesMcGill-kr2qk that 's not true.

Here is the beginning of my 11th book. 7500 BCE to 1610 BC/AD
Some Unpopular History of the United States
by Richard L. McManus
INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this book is to inform reader about historical and archaeological facts that US history books omit in public school. Material culture is the aspect of culture manifested by the physical objects and architecture of a civilization. The term is primarily used in archaeology and anthropology. The field considers artifacts in relation to their specific cultural and historic contexts, communities and belief systems. Material culture can be described as any object that humans use to survive, define social relationships, represent facets of identity, or benefit peoples' state of mind, social, or economic standing. It includes the usage, consumption, creation and trade of objects, behavioral norms and rituals that the objects create or take part in.
Material culture is contrasted with symbolic culture. It includes non-material symbols, beliefs and social constructs. Some scholars consider it to include language and media.
BCE (before Common Era) and CE (Common Era) are the secular alternatives to AD.
------------
The first cities appeared in areas where the land was fertile were established in the region of the Euphrates and Tigris River (aka Mesopotamia) around 7500 BCE. An the Ice Age ended in 9600 BCE.
Scholars disagree on why the first cities in the world arose instead of elsewhere. Theories range from social or natural upheavals that forced people to band together in urban centers, to environmental concerns and even to forced migration of rural communities to cities. None of these theories are universally accepted. On the European continent, the oldest megalithic sites are dated around 3000 BCE, and the popular Stonehenge is dated between 2400 BCE to 1800 BCE.
From before 4000 BCE, over the next ten to fifteen hundred years the people of city of Eridu and their neighbors laid the foundations for almost everything that we know as civilization. In addition to the invention of cities was the invention of a centralized state, the hierarchy of social classes, the division of labor, organized religion, monumental building, civil engineering, writing, sculpture, art, music, education/schools, mathematics and law, not to mention a vast array of new inventions and discoveries, from items as basic as wheeled vehicles and sailing boats to the potter's kiln, metallurgy and the creation of synthetic materials. And on top of all that was the huge collection of notions and ideas so fundamental to our way of looking at the world, like the concept of numbers, or weight, quite independent of actual items counted or weighed, the number ten, or one kilo was invented. Southern Mesopotamia was the place where all that was first achieved.
Due to size and population, Uruk was determined to be the world's first city and was established around 4500 BCE. Some cities were abandoned in Mesopotamia in 600 BCE, probably due to overuse of the land, and fell into ruin.
Archaeological excavations have resulted in scholars questioning whether urbanization (cities_ began Sumer and then spread progressively north from the Euphrates and Tigris River area. The discovery of the settlement of Tell Brak (in modern day Syria), founded 6000 BCE, seems to some scholars to suggest that the Urban Revolution may have begun in the north and that the claim that it originated in Sumer has only been accepted because the Sumerians invented writing and so their version of history is accepted as truth. But this was because the earliest excavations of the 19th century CE were in Sumer. The findings in the Eye Temple indicate that Tell Brak is among the earliest sites of organized religion in northern Mesopotamia.
Assyria was a major Mesopotamian.city/state from the 2000 BCE to 1300 BCE it changed into a territorial state and then turned into an empire to 600 BCE. It starched from Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, Syria and following the Euphrates and Tigris River into Iraq. Sumerian is the language of ancient Sumer. It is one of the oldest attested languages, dating back to at least 2900 BC. It is accepted to be a local language isolate and to have been spoken in ancient Mesopotamia, in the area that is modern day Iraq. The Assyrians created the world’s first great army held together by their superior abilities using siege warfare. It was from the ninth century BCE onward that the Assyrian Empire expanded to great heights of power in the Near East, including Israel and Judah, and they began to emerge within the pages of the Hebrew bible as a real threat to Israel’s existence.
The Assyrians are not mentioned in detail in the Hebrew biblical record until nearly 2,000 years after the establishment of city of Assur (mid-eighth century BCE). They had a great talent for borrowing from other cultures which is illustrated in the figure of their god Assur. This god had character and attributes draw on from the Sumerian and Babylonian gods. The god Assur had power over the kingship of Assyria. The king of Assyria was his chief priest and all those who tended his temple in the city of Ashur and elsewhere lesser priests. Earth, air, fire, and water had its spirit or god. The earthquake, lightning, thunder, rain, storm, desert whirlwind, each had its spirit or god, and of course each plant, tree, and animal. As time went on, men began to think that certain spirits were more powerful than others and these they selected for special reverence or worship.
From 722 to 705 BCE Assyrian tended to be identified with their god Anshar, the father of Anu (An) in the Babylonian Epic of Creation. The process thus represented Assur as a god of long-standing, present from the creation of the universe. To the men who marched in the Assyrian forces, as well as to those they conquered. The god Assur was to them a powerful god worthy of worship and devotion given getting thinking about the odds of being killed or wound prior to a battle.
Akkadian, a Semitic language, gradually replaced Sumerian as a spoken language in the area 2000 BCE (the exact date is debated), but Sumerian continued to be used as a sacred, ceremonial, literary and scientific language in Assyria and Babylonia until the 1st century CE. This written language was preserved on clay tablets dating back to 2500 BC
What does this comment have to do with working horses?
