  • Given the weather I decided to service the Land Rover Series 2a steering relay. Unfortunately, there was no oil in it however I still filled the relay with oil. This video covers how I found the best way to do this service and may help you.
Note: My videos are not a tutorial/how to. I am not a qualified mechanic so please refer to your workshop manual with your work. Do not use the content on my channel as a replacement for a workshop manual or mechanic.

40 odd years ago , i had the the usual steering wobble on my 2a , i changed all the track rod ends , had new swivels fitted , the old ones were pitted with rust and leaked oil , it still wobbled , then put a new relay/damper in , still wobbled , finally fitted a s/h steering box out of an army landrover ,that stopped the wobble , on taking apart the old box , the ball bearing was in 2 bits , i was amazed that it worked at all , by the way ,the army used to fill them up with grease instead of oil which just runs out the bottom , much better idea .

Hi, Did my 2a relay a lot of years ago, could not get the relay out of the chassis, so i gutted the new replacement relay, made up a tool and put new guts into old relay body in chassis, worked perfect for years and years, Tony.

I was super lucky mine just lifted out easy, but your situation is more common. Did the trick tho by what you say ;)

@@rovertasmania7033 Mine took 2 weeks to get out, first time it would not budge. So I soaked it in penetration oil. then had another go and it had moved slightly. I have put plenty of copper grease around it to help next time it needs to come out.

Rover Tasmania, we bought our 109s at the exact same time, that's when I started wathing your videos. They've been keeping my head up because all these forest fires right now in Western Canada have prevented the Land Rover from being delivered! I just got it last night and it is going to be an amazing project, I uploaded a video on my channel for people to check it out.

I use brake cleaner in the aerosol can to clean out oil and crud from the Legs of outboard motors it may work good on this too. But your method seems to work really well.

Brake cleaner would work too, didnt think bout that. I used an air compressor to blow out any crap, but flushing it through (not just a refill) until clean oil came out ok. Cheers

I took mine out yesterday looking at doing a little restoration on it and to my surprise it had not a drop of oil in it. That explains why it was seized

change the two shaft seals, then add a mix of 90w oil and grease. Mine probably got 50/50 mix.

How do get the relay out of the chassis? Mine is rusted in solid. (1955 series 1 107").

I was extremely fortunate, most need to use brute force to remove them or even cut the chassis up around it. Google some of the solutions, all the best with it.

Great vid, very clear. The oil you use looks like enigine oil, isn't transmission oil required?

Thanks. I used both gear oil and later I put in grease. Many now put a grease nipple on the side and pump that in. Stops it draining out and also helps with keeping water out.

Usefull and easy to understand. Thanks. Will you be tackling timing at some point?

    • @rovertasmania7033
      @rovertasmania7033  6 років тому

Thanks. Are you referring to engine timing for the 2.25 diesel motor? If so, that would be when I start to look at working on that motor.

This is just what i have been looking for a no fuss straight forward and to the point restoration. I upload my videos for i think the same reason as you so others can see you don‘t have to spend a lot of money to get the old Landy back on the road. Today i will start with the first video and view each one. All the best David.

I try to keep the vids detailed and relevant. Sounds like you do same. Already seen one of your vids and i can see you do same. My 2a is def a budget build, but also i want to keep its history so not going nuts on painting everything. Ill keep a lookout for your build too. Cheers.
