  • Whilst stripping the Series 2a chassis from its various components, I decided to take on the steering relay given its reputation for being very difficult to remove. However, I was very lucky...

Thanks for this update. I have a series 2A and there is a lot of play in the steering. Looks like a big and expensive job

Not necessarily, theres a squzre nut on the side of the steering box, this adjusts the play inside to reduce 'freeplay'. Of course adjust this with both front wheels off the ground so you can feel when its right. Basically just adjust enough to almost stop all freeplay between the wheel and the splined output shaft. There would be vids on this im sure.

I'm currently fighting with removing the relay myself on a S3. Great video!

Great video! I had that exact bolt snap on me yesterday on my series one. Haven't tried the other 3 yet, but this gives me hope! My relay isn't loose in the frame, though....wish it were!

Sounds like a common problem! Get some lube in the hole next to them before removing the others. As for relay removal, thats gona be fun for you lol.

My 70 S2A has a bad clunk going over small bumps. I had the steering box retightened and still it clunks. Could my problem be a loose relay? A bad ball joint in the steering linkage?

Your lucky with the relay. There's always one bolt 😊

I was expecting a real fight with the relay, so,one busted bolt is just ok with me

Yeah I had one in a Series 1 and she was stuck in really well I ended up buying a puller about the right size to do the job. All my bolts came out fine. I recon I used about 2 cans of CRC

hi did you have a weird steering with the relay being loose at the bottom, as in lots of play

    • @rovertasmania7033

Never drove it but i did notice the steering has firmed up a lot 'before and after'... as is there's no play at the wheel at all!

Shouldn't be a lot of play after the horizontal bolts are put back on. That should take any movement out of it.

maybe the PO was planning ahead & greased it all up upon re installation.

no grease in there, i think was just lose underneath where the bracket is. Anyway, was better for me, just broken bolt being the issue.
