  • This is the audience Q&A part of an evening with Bill Maher in conversation with Larry Wilmore at Live Talks Los Angeles discussing his book, "What This Comedian Said Will Shock You." This event was taped on June 4, 2024.
The host of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher has written his funniest and most opinionated book ever-a brilliantly astute and acerbically funny vivisection of American life, politics, and culture.
Bill Maher has hosted Real Time on HBO for the last twenty-one years. Before that Maher created and hosted Politically Incorrect on ABC. He lives in Los Angeles, California.
“Whether you agree or disagree with him-and I do both-Bill Maher had proven himself to be an illuminating force in a world that values heat over light. His is a vital voice, keeping the left honest and calling the right to account for itself before the bar of reason and of decency. I’d say ‘thank God for Bill,’ but he doesn’t believe in God. So I’ll just say thanks.”-Jon Meacham
In What This Comedian Said Will Shock You, Maher has collected and revised a decade of his direct-to-camera sermons about culture, politics and what’s happening in the world.
Free speech, cops, drugs, race, religion, the generations, cancel culture, the parties, the media, show biz, romance, health-Maher covers it all. The result is a hugely entertaining work of commentary about American culture in the tradition of Mark Twain, Will Rogers, and H. L. Mencken.
Larry Wilmore has been a television producer, actor, comedian, and writer for more than 25 years. He can currently be heard as host of Larry Wilmore: Black on the Air on The Ringer Podcast Network. The show features Wilmore’s unique mix of humor and wit as he weighs in on the issues of the week and interviews guests in the worlds of politics, entertainment, culture, sports, and beyond. Filmo and TV credit include: Jerry and Margo Go Large, alongside Bryan Cranston and Annette Benning on Paramount+; Reasonable Doubt for Hulu’s Onyx Collective; Amend: The Fight for America on Netflix; The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore on Comedy Central; Insecure on HBO; Black-ish on ABC; The Daily Show with Jon Stewart; In Living Color, The Office and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. He also served as creator, writer, and executive producer of The Bernie Mac Show, which earned him a 2002 Emmy Award for “Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series” and a 2001 Peabody Award.

Rural democrat here. Just a cautionary note about guns. Had a trespasser at 4:00 AM outside my front door, inside my truck going through the glove box. Confronted him but he wouldn't leave. Called 911and got the sheriff and it took them 20 minutes to arrive. I was sitting in my front hallway for that 20 minutes with my 357 just in case. When you need it, you need it now. The cavalry can take time to get there. When they arrived they did an unaggressive sane resolution. We need realistic gun laws to filter out the crazies and mental health and economic solutions for others. Keep in mind that the constabulary will arrive after the fact. It can happen to you. Hopefully not.

Most industrialist societies would disagree with the U.S. not having any gun control. PM John Howard in Australia enacted strict background checks and gun control after the Port Arthur mass shooting. What the vast majority of Americans are saying - or would, if asked - is that the guns need to be carefully, comprehensively regulated, and assault weapons and all automatic conversion devices should be banned. That actually WOULD cut down the number of the mass shootings.

Bill, l disagree with your CoVid message. This is ehat happened to my husband who got CoVid Jan. 2020 before even his own Dr. What it was. Although he was over 70, as l was, he was an avid golfer and fisherman. I thought he was going to die but l would not quarantine from him, though for many nights l thought l would wake up beside a corpse. I never, and to this very day, never got CoVid. Today my husband, who turned out to have Long CoVid, has to be on oxygen full time, and has been for 2 years. He is in the early stages of heart failure. We both got dhots when they became available in 2021, but this only prevents future infection for limited time. Another infection will kill him. I have not heard a lot about Long CoVid discussed by you. I would appreciate some some acknowledgement that younger fit people get it too. My 44 yr old son, who ran up mountain in CA every day was stricken with polio type of CoVid and became temporarily paralyzed. His lungs were not affected, but it took a couple of months before he could walk distances. He doesn't run anymore.

As a result....they pumped me full of stronger and stronger antibiotics...the last one almost killed me....meanwhile the virus ate holes in my colon. Every subsequent infection..even after vaccination....ate more holes in my colon. I used to job 10km per day....now I can barely walk 2km.

Bill Mahr is an intelligent guy and mostly can look at issues from different angles and be vocal about it. HOWEVER, the only rigid and un-relenting issue for him is his views on ISRAEL. "I Trust Israel more than any country in the world"!!
If Israel was a guy who shot random passersby, Bill Mahr would still try to defend or justify him. (mind you this is exactly what Israel has done many times in the past few month and what Bill has been defending.)
I watched and admired him for years. But in recent years has been noticing a very subtle hypocrisy and bias which is surfacing more and more. Maybe it was there before but I was impressed by other stuff and didn't notice.
When asked "which guest challenged you the most ?" he couldn't recall. I remember several guests who had challenged him on several occasions. But none in the last few years and those who challenged him before has never returned beck.

And PS: I knew of one healthy 56 year old in my family and friend pod that died of Covid. I thought he had a nuanced and well thought out response. He even mentioned that his perspective had changed over a period of time- especially after educating himself better about such a complex social issue. Perhaps we heard something different, but his comment regarding “the Left’s” position that more legislation and federal control of guns would not curtail the amount of mass shootings. It’s a far more complex problem that will require buy-in by the vast majority of citizens, not to mention considerable investment by mental health, gun mfr’s, law enforcement and a host of other related industries.
I completely agree with your other comments about having more oversight and the common sense approach you seem to posit. However, I don’t think these things will have much impact on the overall violence created by guns. Criminals will always have the same ease of obtaining firearms- any regulations or laws will have next to zero effect. Unfortunately, mentally unstable individuals who are determined to cause mass casualties will also be able to acquire firearms and other weapons. When you spend some time looking into this issue, you realize how difficult and challenging reducing this madness is!
I’m not trying to minimize your response, really! Hopefully, my reply to your comment will allow you to reconsider just how difficult it is to even begin to understand how to solve this.

And just because different laws won’t do anything at the very moment (or in the coming 10-15 years), doesn’t mean that they won’t have an effect over time on the society at large.
Just imagine being a kid, growing up with different regulations. Imagine not knowing any other laws that those you grow up with. This changes people on a psychological level alone. Progress follows.
