Great video! Didn't know that blue was chosen to match the city's other teams. I always thought that "blueshirts" stood for their blue balls since '67.
One thing about the Islanders logo that I didnt know until very recently and ive been an islander fan 20+ years: the 'I' in Islanders is pointed and angled for a reason, it points to Uniondale in western Nassau County where the Nassau Coliseum is, the original home of the NYI for nearly 40 years. And about the Fisherman logo: it was changed because Long Island has a rich maritime history from whaling in the early colonial days on the North Shore to the current fishing industry that comprises a lot of Long Islands income and things to do in the summer. When it was changed briefly in '95, the Ranger fans got a new chant: "WE WANT FISH STICKS" because it resembled the Gordons Fisherman. I personally liked it but it had to go because of the chants lol
I always thought the Quebec Nordiques’ logo kinda looked like an abstract elephant. I noticed the stick and puck, but never gathered that the main part was an igloo Also, the fact that the Columbus team is named the Blue Jackets with a Yellowjacket mascot, so they combined those colors and actually made him green, is quite underratedly(new word, cool) clever!
If you remember your Roman history, the individual legion’s commander was a Legatus (or Legate), a Senator chosen by his fellow Senators to lead the legion. EDIT: and to be technical, Legates were the generals, while the Centurions are closer to lieutenants or colonels
Man, this is one heck of an interesting logo history. I thought some of the original sixes logos got the current logos right from the beginning of their inception since they looked more "old-fashioned" than the rest of the league logos. Guess I was wrong. By the way, after this video, the NBA is next?
Can you imagine that for each NHL teams for their home games, all of there home games for preseason, regular season, and postseason, came out on DVD (From 1977-2006 they would come on either or both DVD and VHS)
I do miss the black and orange (1954-2005) NHL logo Also LOVE the Kachina Logo for the 'Yotes. I enjoyed the howling coyote logo, but nothing will beat that original logo.
The man in the Blackhawks' logo is named after the Aboriginal Sauk leader, Black Hawk or Ma-ka-tai-me-she-kia-kiak(Sauk: Mahkatêwe-meshi-kêhkêhkwa) Also the Blackhawks' original owner, Frederic McLaughlin wanting a team in Chicago, named the team after the 333rd Machine Gun Battalion of the 86th Infantry Division which he was a commander of, was named the Black Hawk Division.
Very interesting. I always wondered why logos are changed. I knew about the Ducks because I was playing youth hockey at the time, but I didn't know about some of the others. Especially when they didn't relocate or nothing. Relocation I get. Not only that, but I'm an Avalanche fan, so I get it.
Little side fact: The inspiration for the original Ducks logo came from an animated series that Disney produced called "The Mighty Ducks". A team of anthropomorphized Ducks were featured as the protagonists, who acted as a group of crime fighters, as well as a hockey team in the "universe" portrayed in the series. The leader of the team, who also acted as the goalie named Wildwing, wore a stylized hockey mask, which was used as part of that original logo. Coincidentally, while the Ducks were owned by Disney, they had a mascot that was designed and named after the character Wildwing, who still serves as the Anaheim Ducks' mascot to the present day.
fun fact: the Islanders logo is not actually circular. it is slightly wider than it is tall, presumably to fit the titular long island. this results in funny errors because the edge of the logo juts out of pure circular overlays used in like playoff brackets
I just discovered this after watching this video. I have a buffalo CCM jersey that has that yellow NHL shield on the neck. It’s a team classic jersey though however, but is interesting to me.
48:56 I think the reason why you would mention Disney for Anaheim Ducks is because of course, weather you went their or not, their is a Disneyland resort. And an addition for a duck character of Disney, there would be a team for Disney in Anaheim called Anaheim Ducks.
I'm a rangers fan and you forgot to mention the best alternate logo in NHL history. Of course I'm referring to the Liberty head design. Also the Devils didn't change their color scheme until after the 93-94 season.
@PrinceAnt722 devils are a trash hockey team they can't even win a cup in a full season they won their three cups in shortened seasons. My rangers are going to win the cup this year even without tarassenko and kane.
@craigkatz1018 Actually, I am a Rangers fan. The only season that the Devils won in a shorten one was 1995. The other two (2000, 2003) were in a full season.
Sick video. But you forgot to show the iconic blues jersey with the arch in the background, and the jersey with the trumpet and a complete absence of the blues note. I thought those were very interesting
I’m almost 100% sure the Minnesota North stars never dropped the north from their name before moving. I could be wrong but after watching this video that really racks my brain so I did a little research and found nothing that says they dropped north from their name ever like I said, I could be wrong, but I just couldn’t find any were confirming this P.s up until 2013 the wild had “Minnesota Wild” arched above the logo you showed.
Yeah its really hard to find so many specific things pre-internet... it probably accounts for half of the time in making these videos! I looked at my notes and this section was built off of this program from the 1991 Stanley Cup Finals: www.sportspaper.info/wiki/index.php/1991_Stanley_Cup_Finals_(Pittsburgh_Penguins_vs._Minnesota_North_Stars) On wikipedia it does say "Following the 1991 Finals run, the North Stars adopted a new logo - the word "STARS" in italicized gold capitals over a green star with a gold outline; the gold now a more metallic shade than the previous yellowish shade." But as with classic wikipedia, there's no source provided for that information. In 'Fabric of the Game' by Chris Creamer & Todd Radom they wrote: "Following the 1991 Finals run, the North Stars adopted a new logo - the word "STARS" in italicized gold capitals over a green star with a gold outline; the gold now a more metallic shade than the previous yellowish shade." So that part of the video was based off of combining those comments on the rebrand descriptions and what may have been that first appearance of the logo on the stanley cup finals program! I would have been up a creek many times without that book by Creamer & Radom! They really helped clear up some of the earlier logos with many of the teams! Thanks so much for your comment! I'd recommend the book if you're interested in Hockey logos and names! They do a really great job with all the teams!
A small detail, I don't remember where I read it, but the Canadiens logo contains the letters CHC, the red C in front, the letter H and in the background a white letter C on a blue background. Greets from Chile.
I love that you described the Panthers’ updated design as mature- I’ve been saying the original logo is reminiscent of a rebellious teenager for years now.😆 Fantastic video! I appreciate the work that went into making it.
Their is something I have thought about for relocated teams. When the Minnesota North Stars moved Dallas and being known as the Dallas Stars, for people from Minnesota who couldn't move to Dallas, even if they live in Minnesota but not fan of Minnesota Wild, they would still watch whole each season of Dallas Stars on Bally sports Southwest. The same could be set for some other teams that were relocated to others cities. Atlanta to Calgary (1972-1980) - people in Atlanta would watch each season of Calgary Flames on TV. Atlanta to Winnipeg (1999-2011) Atlanta had another NHL team but they did relocated again so people in Atlanta (1999-2011) would watch each season of Winnipeg Jets on TV. Qaubec to Colorado (1972-1995) people in Qaubec would watch each season of Colorado Avalanche on TV New England to Hartford to Carolina (1972-1979-1997) people in New England and Hartford would watch each season of Carolina Hurricanes on TV. On how very NHL team got their name video, you explained that the New England Whalers were forced to move because the Boston Bruins NHL team was already their. Why can't Massachusetts have two NHL teams? Kansas City to Colorado to New Jersey (1974-1976-1982) people in Kansas City and Colorado would watch each season of New Jersey Devils on TV. What Kansas City did the team play their home games, in Missouri or Kansas? That's what I think for people in that era who basically miss their old team they can still watch the new relocated team on TV if they don't move to that new city. Also I'm curious, when the Cleveland Barions merged with the Minnesota North Stars, what does the word "merged" mean?
Oops, I forgot to mention one more relocated team which is Arizona Coyotes. Winnipeg to Arizona (1972-1996) people in Winnipeg who are not fans of the recent Winnipeg Jets (2011-present) they would would each season of Arizona Coyotes on TV. Also, when the Atlanta Thrashers moved to Winnipeg, why did they named it Winnipeg Jets again? Could they think of any other object, animal or nationality so they don't have to namei it Winnipeg Jets?
Guess what. When. I was reading NHL in Wikipedia, I found out that there is a 33rd team expanding, and that team will be in Utah. U should update this video on how every NHL team got their and this video.
@@JustinLearnsThings this Utah team talk has been around for a few years. I've been a hockey fan since 2015-16 (I was 6-7 years old. Now 14, nearly 15. I'll be glad to help out with the research)
I can’t remember when the jersey was, but there was a 4th for Philadelphia, the only difference was that there was a shining silver effect on the outline.
@@JustinLearnsThings oh also you should have mentioned that the sens are a phoenix club of the original Ottawa Senators though and do sometimes use the original Ottawa O
You should have added the California Golden/ Oakland Seals, which moved to Cleveland named the Barons. The Barons lasted 2 years in Cleveland, then merged with the Minnesota North Stars.
Yeah I included them in the names video because of how intricate they are intertwined in a couple different teams. But I didn’t include them in this video since they’re a defunct team. I have thought of doing a video about defunct teams though!
NHL teams are going reverse retro with their new uniforms sharks, Minnesota wild, Nashville Predators, Florida Panthers, Colorado Avs, Dallas Stars and many other hockey teams
Yeah I really want a Whalers hat even though they don't exist (as the whalers) anymore and I have no connection to the east coast, much less Connecticut!
So since it doesn't really much explain the logo: the spoked wheel in the Bruins logo represents one of Boston's nicknames: the Hub. Originally this was short for the "Hub of New England", around which the region rotated, apparently at one point it was upgraded to the Hub of the Universe though, lol
I know The Yeti is the FrontRunner for the new team's name, but what about the Utah Buzz? It has nice pairity with our *other* team with the two Zz's at the end, and his history in our state being the name of an old minor league baseball team. It serves as a not to both our state nickname "The Beehive State" and our state motto "Industry" (get it, the BUZZ of a bee, the BUZZ of machinery...) The logo would be a stylized Bee enclosed with a buzzsaw with its head forming a U & T, its wings forming a "B" and the stripes on its abdomen forming Utah's odd step-stool shape.
Yeah that’s a great secondary logo! Wish I included more secondaries but the video was getting really logo so I tried to keep the focus on the primary logos!
I know Yeti is the current frontrunner for the new team, but what about the Utah Buzz It has nice pairty with our *other* team with the two z's at the end, and also has hostory within the state as it was previously rhe name of one of our minor leauge teams. It serves as a nod to both our state nickname, "the beehive state" and our state motto "Industry" (get it, the BUZZ of a bee, the BUZZ of machnery,) The logo would double down on the concept with a stylized honeybee enclosed within a Buzzsaw shape; the bee's head makes the U & T, its wings make a B, and the stripes on its abdomen form Utah's odd step-stool shape.
Opps, i forgot to mention one more relocated team. I would have gone my whole life not knowing the wild logo looked like an animal, if i never saw this video.
Haha I love that logo! Glad I could help you see it!
NHL teams are going reverse retro with their new uniforms sharks, Minnesota wild, Nashville Predators, Florida Panthers, Colorado Avs, Dallas Stars and many other hockey teams
I genuinely think hockey has the best logos from top to bottom out of the major sports leagues
Hockey is the only sport where I have the desire to get a hat from a team that I don’t support simply because the logos rock.
Yeah I really want a Whalers hat even though they don't exist (as the whalers) anymore and I have no connection to the east coast, much less Connecticut!
@@JustinLearnsThingsChicago is my team but I dig the CAC Canadiens and the Canucks old “stick in ring” logos.
You're missing the original Winnipeg Jets logo, which is a player a flying jet and Winnipeg Jets hockey club on it inside a circle.
So since it doesn't really much explain the logo: the spoked wheel in the Bruins logo represents one of Boston's nicknames: the Hub. Originally this was short for the "Hub of New England", around which the region rotated, apparently at one point it was upgraded to the Hub of the Universe though, lol
the primary logos for some NHL teams changing some colors updating their color pallet
Update your list love seeing the evolution of a team logo
Which teams? I added a bruins video after this one
Rangers are my favorite NHL team
Thanks for watching! 🙌
The North Stars didn’t drop “North” before the move to Dallas.
lol, the regal lion from 1998-2002 for the Kings is also wearing sunglasses
Haha I don't know how i didn't see it before! Very holywood!
the bruins actually changed their logo over this past summer to celebrate their centennial season.
Yeah that would have been a cool one to include especially with 25 anniversary logo playing such a big role in the design history!
Why were you saying sweater
Traditionally a hockey uniform is referred to as a sweater!
You missed the Edmonton Oilers metallic oil drop logo that Todd Mcfarlane (creator of Spawn and co-creator of Image Comics) designed.
The P for the Flyers is obviously the same P the Phillies use, with wings added.
Thanks for watching!
My dad used to be in the WHL
That’s awesome! Thank you for watching!
I know The Yeti is the FrontRunner for the new team's name, but what about the Utah Buzz?
It has nice pairity with our *other* team with the two Zz's at the end, and his history in our state being the name of an old minor league baseball team.
It serves as a not to both our state nickname "The Beehive State" and our state motto "Industry" (get it, the BUZZ of a bee, the BUZZ of machinery...)
The logo would be a stylized Bee enclosed with a buzzsaw with its head forming a U & T, its wings forming a "B" and the stripes on its abdomen forming Utah's odd step-stool shape.
56:54 i absolutely agree!!
Thanks for watching!!
I love the 1932 Red Wings logo
Yeah that fatter wheel is pretty cool!
The new Winnipeg Jets had to get permission from the Maple Leafs to have the maple leaf in their logo.
Oh interesting! That makes sense, though!
Boston born the Montreal symbol was in many nightmares, and we called them the habs, back in the day Montreal always knocked us out of the playoffs.
Nice! Thanks for watching!
Your French was great!
Haha don't watch the older videos, you might change your mind lol 😂
@@JustinLearnsThings 👀🗣️🤣😂
makes you appreciate how much better logos used to be
Old Colorado Rockies one was pretty great! Same with the nordiques!
You forgot about the hockey stick and the storm warning flag logo for the canes
Yeah that’s a great secondary logo! Wish I included more secondaries but the video was getting really logo so I tried to keep the focus on the primary logos!
hope the (new version) ottawa senators win a stanley cup in the future
Thanks for watching!
😂😂😂😂
No that are not
I know Yeti is the current frontrunner for the new team, but what about the Utah Buzz
It has nice pairty with our *other* team with the two z's at the end, and also has hostory within the state as it was previously rhe name of one of our minor leauge teams.
It serves as a nod to both our state nickname, "the beehive state" and our state motto "Industry" (get it, the BUZZ of a bee, the BUZZ of machnery,)
The logo would double down on the concept with a stylized honeybee enclosed within a Buzzsaw shape; the bee's head makes the U & T, its wings make a B, and the stripes on its abdomen form Utah's odd step-stool shape.
Opps, i forgot to mention one more relocated team.
Winnipeg to Arizona (1972-1996) for people in Winnipeg who are not fans of the recent Winnipeg Jets (2011-present) would watch each season of the Arizona Coyotes on TV. Also, when Atlanta Thrashers moved to Winnipeg, why did they named it Winnipeg Jets again? Couldn't they think of other objects, animals, or nationality so they don't have to name it Winnipeg Jets again?
