Man the blazers logo is perfection for a logo. Made something so og and made perfect sense, looked perfect, and works in all regards with the perfect color scheme
I did wish the old logos for the Pistons, 76ers, Warriors, and Hawks came back. What I mean is the Pistons horse chrome logo, the 76ers word mark logo from the 90s, the Warriors lightning logo from the 90s, and the 90s Hawks logo clutching the basketball. I like them a lot and they look fierce or cool enough. Maybe in a throwback season. At any rate, another good video, Mr. Justin. I am curious if you'll branch out and do teams for other leagues like the USL soccer league or even branch out to international sports league like the J.League
The Wizards logo stands out so much for being in a totally different art style from the rest of the league. I wish more teams did that kind of thing, but of course the capitalist owners want uniformity for marketing purposes. Rich people always have to ruin everything. The current logo is pure trash.
I get that some of the new simplistic logos will last longer (and I personally love the Clippers redesign), but for me personally those loud 90s logos can’t be beat, especially when some of them like the Pistons are exponentially better than their current counterparts (in both palette and design in the Pistons’ case)
I remember at age 11 in 1992, I drew and colored every NBA team logo at the time on 8.5 × 11 paper and then proceeded to staple the drawings all over my bedroom walls. The hardest one was the Hornets, but it was also my favorite along with the Celtics.
1:12:07 (Edit: No, the Claw is an alternate logo, not a primary. Still, great video!) You know, it's weird I never see it, even if it's been in promotional material and on the court, but the Claw logo of the Raptors seems to be omitted in these types of videos. I don't know if it was an alternate logo at the time or what, but to me it's probably the best of the 3 major designs so far. Effective yet not oversimplified.
As you can see the most legendary teams always kept they logo simple without a lot of changes that’s why they legendary LA /Boston /NY /Chi / Phi 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I like the history on the logos. There were a few that I didn't know even existed before hsnd snd I comsider myself one who enjoys finding out info on that stuff. Great video. I will suggest a video on the history of NBA jerseys. The history on them always fascinates me and peaks my curiousity to the max.
Thanks for watching! Yeah I’ve thought about jerseys, but I’d have to think it through, there’s so many frequent changes! I’d probably have to do like annual updates or something! There’s definitely a good idea for a video!
At 34:36 where you talk about the updated Wizards logo. The three stars aren't just representing the three different communities of D.C. it's actually just an homage to the flag of DC (three red stars above two red bands on a white background) The DC flag is based on the Washington family crest. In the wizards up-to-date logo, there's a white band with a red background, there's a Washington monument, and white stars, inverted DC flag colors basically. But they could also represent the three different audiences that come to a wizards game, Virginia Maryland and DC residents.
Yeah sorry if it wasn’t stated but it intentionally mirrors the DC flag whose stars have their own mean and I found it interesting that the team added the meaning of DC, MD, and VA. They talk about it in this article on the team’s website: www.nba.com/wizards/wizards-unveil-new-primary-logo Thanks for watching!
The graphic designer in me hates the 90s logos and loves the simple logos like today’s 76ers. It’s simple but can last the test of time but the kid in me LOVES them 90s logos tho lol dope vid!!
18:51 - given that this logo here is using the DIN typeface with "Round" style, it is probably someone trying to remake it. Original DIN typeface was introduced in the 1930 or 40s, but the "round" version only in the 90s. So, very likely someone had fun with it. Good font choice, tho!
The Baltimore Bullets were named after an old Baltimore Bullets ABL team but shared the 60s logo with the Bata Bullets shoe -- which were made in a nearby factory. Bata Bullets were like Chucks, but they've stopped making or selling shoes in the USA (you could find them in Aus/NZ as of a few years ago)
I think the problem is that there’s so much oversimplification on things, that’s what messed things up so much. Now I do believe the retro movement hasn’t been bad as far as that part of simplicity but then the ones that don’t, they just lack so much character. The San Antonio Spurs and Cleveland Cavaliers didn’t really need to change their logos either, they were fine as they were. I remember how good the Denver Nuggets and Utah Jazz used to be, now they’re decent at best. The current Nuggets one doesn’t really give me primary logo vibes, maybe a secondary at best. I miss when the Nuggets and Jazz had mountains for both of their logos.
This is a very well researched and entertaining video, I just wished you didn't say "finally" for all those temporary changes that don't remain part of a current iteration... You are killing me, Justin.
I know I am late to this party, but the Minneapolis Lakers came from a team relocating after the 1946-47 National Basketball League, and the Lakers originated from the Detroit Gems who went 4-44 their lone season in the NBL. Fun fact the Minneapolis Lakers won the 1947-48 NBL Championship, the 1948-49 Basketball Association Of America Championship, and the 1949-50 NBA Championship, and again they won 3 straight to become the first 3-peat champions in 1951-52, 1952-53, and 1953-54. Just doing some fun researching.
Thank you for finally simplifying the Celtics logo history for me. The orange background added to the Leprechaun wrongly in the 60's? never made any sense to me. I wish the Franchises themselves or the NBA would archive all their official Logo / Uniform / and Court Design history on their websites. History nerds have to scour the internet for old basketball magazine covers or uniforms to gather any sort of answers and accuracy.
The Lakers first logo in Los Angeles is actually a giraffe logo that introduced the designs in 1960's ERA Jerseys way before this logo 28:58 existed. It's was around probably from 1960 or the 1961-62 season. And it was officially seen in a 1961-1962 merchandise Jim Loscutoff Rod Hundley Los Angeles Lakers Boston Game Program guide book.
There’s not lot that’s been written around that logo… I’m slowly working on a video for it, but trying to get some sources. It may be something just used on a fleer set, neither the Lakers or NBA acknowledge it as an official logo, but is that to bury it or what? Idk!
@@JustinLearnsThings i’m sure the giraffe is still the first official though, because after all, it was also used and seen more often from the 1961 NBA cards as well along with more than one lakers player like Jerry West. Otherwise, the first fonts on their jersey, probably would not exist or the 1962 Lakers logo would’ve showed up in the NBA Players cards as well, just like the Syracuse nationals.
