    The fact that people want to talk to you about their problems every time you just mention what you do, just made me think how much we need each other and how much we crave for someone to listen.

      I agree.
      It’s rather quite simple. Example, if you’re an accountant or financial advisor at your job. And then at the end of the day, you leave the office to go home or hang out with your friends at a party, you don’t want people to expect you to do their finances for them simply because it’s what you do for a job. You’re there at the party to enjoy, not to work.

    I totally relate to dreading the "what do you do for a living?" lol. As a social worker, I get a lot of "Wow, I couldn't do your job", and a lot of "I'm really worried about a kid because of xyz, should I report it to child services?" My state has mandatory reporting for all people over 18, so usually the answer is yes.
    And then my pharmacist husband gets all the medical questions and strange rashes shown to him at parties.

    Also for music therapists the response from other people is totally different... mostly because people don’t realize that it’s a real thing. So we get “oh! What’s that?” Most people think we just sing to people...😑 My go to answer is “I’m a trained therapist and a trained musician and I studied methods on incorporating the two”

    To be honest, I don't think I could do all of it within the deadlines because I am not neurotypical. I wouldn't be able to do full time work and then internships on the side. That is insane. How sad that such a valuable career is so incredibly difficult. On top of that, I can't imagine putting that many years of work to earn so little. Those who can endure are definitely incredible and I am so thankful for those of you that do this line of work- but my heart aches that it is this complicated and that what you earn as a therapist is so meager compared to the work put it. Oi.

    • @juliejealousy
      @juliejealousy 6 років тому +20

      Rachel Cyders I’m not neurotypical and I’m in school to be a counselor. I live in a different state though. It’s possible. I know that you can complete my grad program in 5 years but full time is 2. And then you need the 3000 hours within 8 years, which is what I read recently. I think it’s possible to do it part time and with boundaries so you can care for your mental health, but that’s just my opinion. I used to be in a way worse place with my mental health and wouldn’t be able to handle it but I’m in a better place now. I hope that things get better for you over time. 💕

      @kitty_rae21 6 років тому +7

      Kati Morton Yes, I completely agree. I don't know how, but I deeply hope it changes someday. My interests and skills are both in mental health and teaching, and it's been difficult to make any forwards motion knowing the financial situation either paths would put me into. I don't care to be rich, but I do long to be financially stable enough to support a family of my own someday. I know it's not impossible, but the lack of security freezes me up.

    • @juliejealousy
      @juliejealousy 6 років тому +4

      Rachel Cyders well my mom is a teacher and she struggles with an anxiety disorder. I actually work in a school as a teacher’s aide and have managed but yes, unfortunately it doesn’t pay well. I think if you truly love something you should strive to do it, but at your own pace of course. It’s nice that a lot of schools offer part time programs for that reason. The teaching route in the states from what I know is a bit easier because the masters program is a lot shorter and you need way less internship hours to become a teacher.

    I am not a therapist. Heck, I'm not always the healthiest and need a therapist, but my PTSD makes me quiet and more of a listener than than a talker. This causes people tell me things I am not always able to deal with. I think with the high-speed lifestyle so many people live under, when they find someone who listens, they use that opportunity. That may be why even when you don't tell someone you are a therapist, they are still telling you things. You make a good listener even when not in therapy mode. It may be a bad hypothesis, but it has been something I have noticed around me for years as well.

Your comment about wearing your counseling hat is exactly how I already feel. I don't tell anyone what I'm going to school for. This was posted a long time ago but I’m planning to be a therapist so this helped me. I don’t know who I’ll help yet because I’m young (11 years old) I helped someone before and they told me that I’m so helpful. They were going thru depression and they were harming themselves. And I made them a schedule and I have them advice and tips. I also critiqued their life and they improved! I’m so proud of them because a while after, they improved! They still harmed themselves but they only did it not often.
    So this is so helpful! Thank you so much...

    Haha I'm a therapist too and all my life people have approached me to tell me really personal stuff; we give off the vibe, Kati.
    But real talk, I had to learn to regulate that openess, and it's a delicate line between preserving myself and trying to avoid the person becoming super anguished because of the nature of what they're telling. Would love to hear how you do it, if possible.

I will often stop people and tell them I have some great colleagues that would be able to help.. but since we are at a party or dinner or whatever, we should probably get back to that. Some stranger off the street that I bump into and just say "sorry" to will start spilling their life story to me. I have no clue how to stop it without seeming mean or uncaring.

    I was seeing a therapist at a community clinic who in her spare time worked (for tips only) in a restaurant owned by friends. She worked there to help the restaurant get by; she didn’t seriously need the income.
    But it was her second job, and as I was attending a group luncheon that started 15 minutes after my therapy session ended, there she was, unexpectedly, filling my water glass. No weirder experience in my life than her pouring water for me just 15 minutes after I poured my innermost self out to her!

    Hey kati! I have been dealing with depression and anxiety for years and being home or around my family makes it much worse even though they are not necessarily bad people. They don’t know about my mental issues so when I avoid them they think I’m trying to be a jerk. Because of this, they just so and do things that make it even worse. The worst part about the situation is that the only way I think I could ever get the help I need is through my parents. I can’t even imagine how I Would mention this to them. I have no idea what to do but the longer I wait, the worse it gets, i fear that soon I won’t be able to be helped anymore but I don’t know what to do. I love your videos and they help me so much! Thank you for all of the work you put in every week!

    It is really extremely comforting that therapists have to go the rough the educational and experiential gauntlet before they are licensed. (I realize the process needs refinement but I digress) Really allows me to have more confidence that - like any graduate with an advanced degree - they know their stuff!

    You're very down to earth and friendly, so your viewers want to know more about you. Behind the scenes looks create a feeling of intimacy between you and your viewers. Sometimes on UA-cam presenters are just pretty faces reading a script, and it's nice to see you're more than a pretty face. Some old Psychologists give off an "I'm better than you" vibe. You look like a someone I'd meet at a dinner party. I watched this this because I'm a Psychology student.

    Kati, I love that you don't tell people you're a therapist, I'm a trainee lawyer and as soon as someone knows that suddenly they want to tell you all their legal issues, which unless you're wearing that "hat" is something you can't do anything about. Glad it happens in other professions to!

    I think a lot of us who work in the field put off that vibe unintentionally. I work in addictions counseling, and random strangers tell me their life story ALL THE TIME. It's one of the main reasons I don't take public transportation that much anymore.

    I gave this video a thumbs up.
    I really didn't think about how therapists are normal people too and they don't do therapy 24/7 they have their own lives.
    So the best takeaway from this video is if you know a therapist don't try to make them do their job when they are off the clock

Thank you so much for your dedication and your valuable information.

    Yep I have always had people tell me all their info moments after I meet them. Think that's why I decided to go back to school to be a counselor...If people are already comfortable (apparently) talking to me about intimate stuff I might as well learn the best way to respond and not cause harm....And learn how to turn that off.

    I'm a therapist myself (Clinical social worker) and I myself don't like to tell people sometimes what I do because usually I come across two types of people: A) they'll tell you everything that's going on and at that moment you're not in therapy mode or B) Some people would stop talking because they probably think you're diagnosing them at the moment (which is NEVER the case). I love helping others just like you Kati, but there's a time and place where I like to relax for a bit and not be a therapist a let loose and chill. The only time I'm in therapist mode is when I'm actually seeing client's. Other than that, I'm just a regular person like everyone else. So I know how you feel in that area. Great video. I love watching your videos Kati.

    Hi Kati!
    First of all congratulations for passing all your licensing exams and becoming a therapist! I really admire your perseverence :) I'm also on this similar road now, just started working as an "intern" type therapist. I'm working in Hungary but I can say it's pretty similar than over there... Lots and lots of years of learning and gaining experience and working loads of side jobs to actually make money :D But it's very encouraging to see you do what you like and so well, but at the same time being honest about the rocky parts of this road.
    Thank you for your videos! Keep them coming :)
