So important to remember to teach the basics to our kids. I never had anyone show me how to budget until I found this community online! I made a lot of avoidable mistakes just because I was uneducated

I underwrite mortgage loans for a living and a part of the job is reviewing people’s assets. Some people just spend ridiculous amounts of money on food, coffee, food delivery services. It’s just so crazy how much people just spend on junk.

Reason why Dave mentions a lot beans and rice meaning you shouldnt look at a restaurant while in debt and trying to get out. Also, when budgeting, your grocery budget is never accurate. $500 in groceries this month budgeted, spends nearly $1000.
I work with a lady who spends on junk food 3x a day. Then she says how her husband spends too much.
Makes me want to cry.
it's not junk, it's convenience. pushing responsibilities to others. people dont NEED a cellphone, food delivery, any car electronics, video games etc. but it's all shiny objects syndrome. in college i had none of that and made it work.

I needed to hear this. I’ve budgeted for many years and have done well in my career. Now for the past 2 years or so I’ve been spending unintentionally. I still pay my bills on time and still contribute to my retirement account every paycheck but there are times where I’m spending hundreds of dollars like nothing and recently the hundreds have turned to thousands. I don’t mind spending it but I want to atleast plan to spend it. I just need to take back control by starting to budget again…

@@ninjablack4347 Well the problem is that most teenagers would balk at you if you told them to delay pleasure and save. They simply won’t listen. You should consider it like winning the lottery if you have a teenager who will listen and follow these principles. The reason so many people are broke is simply because they think they know better than those who have actually had experience, and they end up paying a price for thinking that way.

Yes I can imagine it. And here's what would happen, the economy and it's future outlook would look stagnant and growth would be slow. The main reason our economy has always been strong, (including recessions since people still work they just have to find odd jobs) is due to our consumerism and over spending. The moment people start being responsible with money, the less money would circulate and cause businesses to cut back due to less demand.
I'm not advocating for financial irresponsibility but unfortunately that's the reason why the economic engine still runs. The responsible ones have to take advantage of the actions of the mindless spenders.
@@costco_pizza Don't underestimate all teenagers. Yes, many woul back but a significant number would not. Having seen the mistakes of their parents, many would welcome some advice on hires to avoid the same pitfalls. Early education is key, the earlier the better. and parents after pivotal, but they can't teach what they don't know.
I love Dave!! I’ve been back and forth with the baby steps for many years! But as of 2020 I got real with myself abs goals and increased my income, paid off 3/5 debts, and have my emergency fund. 🙌🏽🙌🏽😭😭😭 Working on tackling my car payments now. I’ve cut out sooo my much and finally feel like i can breathe! Cannot wait to start investing and working on retirement. Thank you Dave!! 🙏🏽

My budget is in an excel sheet for every expenditure. I got two categories, need or greed. For 2020. Turns out about half my expenses were nice to have "greeds"

It's a classic and extremely popular in the business world. Should be fairly easy to find a PDF online so it shouldn't cost you anything to read unless you want to pick up a hard copy.

Budgeting requires a lot of sacrifices. The first step should be analyzing a person's spending habits and setting some budgets for each spending category. I'll admit budgeting isn't fun but it's necessary.

This x1000. I’ve gone from 50k NW in 2015 to 500k net worth now. All from sacrifice. I don’t invest too much cause scared and too risk averse. So that 450k gain was maybe 30k interest/bonds/stocks. It’s 95% from SACRIFICE. Not wasting money like all the idiots of America do. The Instagram wannabes.

Believing this is a fundamental difference between a Conservative and a Liberal, between the successful and the dependent, between the happy and the angry.

Dave’s plan is for people who already started life and made wrong choices. His baby steps help get them out of trouble. You’re at the beginning. You can go straight to investing. Do the math and you’ll see that you can retire early.

I wish I could buy the hardcover book of 'The Total Money Makeover' in Malaysia. But it is so expensive that it would take 10% of my monthly income just to get the book. Reading the ebook and watching the show almost everyday now to gives me more motivation and preparation in the future because i'm in baby step 2. Still long way to go. But 1 day I will purchase that book just to show my gratitude for helping me clearing up the mess. Thank you Dave Ramsey.

I new to sales and I don’t know how I’m going to budget for January because I have no idea what the commission will look like and if I get a bonus. There’s also the possibility of me not getting any commission because I have to break draw!

The greatest help that I received from Dave Ramsey was the matter of the “clear path”. He is absolutely right also that once you have that path in front of you- it takes the man in the mirror to decide and actually practically walk that path - step by step! My wife and I only have student loans a left...after 2.5 years: $65,000 already paid off. Five kids. Lower income - self-employed. Pandemic: Our family is proof that it can be done!!
For those who don't know, one of the easiest way to start figuring out your budget is see what you're spending your money on.
Download your bank activity (all your activity - bank, credit cards if you have them, etc.) and categorize your spending. Then figure out what you actually need (rent/mortgage, utilities, reasonable food). Try to cut out the extra.
When you do this too, you can take a look at your expenses to see if you can lower them. Call Sirius, call ATT, look up how to switch your electricity provider or insurance provider. Being frugal isn't just not going out to eat. Some of this stuff takes work! Don't let people just take your money.

I think when he talks about rice and beans, it is also lowering your extravagant at home foods too. Not literally just rice and beans, but not making silly purchases
Budgeting for basic necessities always comes first. Then anything extra should be set aside for debts payment. If there’s no debt, then start investing!
What about paying yourself first in the form of saving and investing?

I always hear Dave say "cut those credit cards" does that also mean close the CC account? wont that lower my credit score?
The key is to really sit down and write everything out and budget by paycheck. It takes hours in the begining but it's worth it. Have to be able to focus but I know it's hard with kids.
If you’re not banking a ton of money with a 6 figure income there’s a significant sum of dollars not being accounted for or cuts that need to be made.

Kids are only expensive if you don't know how to budget and you can't tell your kids "no" when it's not in the budget. SAHM Mom of 4 here
My husband made the same and we have 5 sons. Actually, he made less when we had 3, and we live in a major metro area. We have been comfortable because we lived a lot of Dave's principles without having done his program. My oldest bought his first home for his wife and 2 babies at 22, and his 2 cars were paid for in cash. He worked hard and lived within his means in order to provide those things for his family.
He never talks about budgeting details
After I got divorced (I didn't make anywhere near $100K per year) and I became Mr. Mom, I started buying stocks. I only wish I was able to buy more.

I have roughly 9k in debt on a car that's had three wrecks and gets poor gas mileage.
I have 10k in cash.
Do I pay off the Car that's been devalued or trade it in and keep the cash?
If the wrecks appear on Carfax, you're in a hole; if you trade it in, that is another debt. Tough position to be in

I have no debt at all and im tighteming my budget, eat less biscuits and crisps, chippy once a month instead of each week and try and increase income, im a pensioner in Uk with a small nurses pension with state pension

Can you make a budget if your income is not consistent and you're self-employed? Some months I make more, and some I make less.
I'm in the same boat Adrian. Some months I make $6,000 a month...some months I make only $2000. However, in the end it averages to about $40,000/year so I just budget for that.

Well you can so far as knowing what you need to spend on house and car payments and a basic food budget for the week/month. Then work from there.

I always find that folks with large incomes and who are used to a big income often find it challenging to budget because it isn't natural. I remember, like yesterday, going to the grocery store and watching my mother sort through coupons and look for the best deals. I consider myself lucky!
Making money is a much different skill than what's needed to consistently budget save and invest

I never budget either...although I know where my money is going. It's all about keeping your expenses low. I make $40,000/yr....but save half of that.

But basically its a place where Food is included in the rent. Heck even free cleaning service and utiliy and heating. And now I'm living in an apartment not able to save nearly as much. I find it ridiculous that you make 100k a year and cant regulate your finances!! And what's more depressing is these are sometimes CEOs of corporate companies! Smh.
... some ppl don’t have the privilege to have parents who teach them these things. And there’s a lot of ppl who have a lot of money and they know how to handle it cause again they never got taught the meaning of money which every parent should drill into their kids from a. Younge age. At least he’s asking for help

The problem with giving out of your excess is that you have to wait years potentially before you start giving. If you start giving at the beginning you can help people your whole life no matter how poor or rich you are. You may save up and suddenly die not being able to help anyone!

49 & he doesn’t know where to start budgeting🤯🤯 Meanwhile I’m in my 20s and started budgeting since middle school when I got my allowance. NO ONE showed me, I always had a notebook & red pen for debits & blue pen for credits. I now use an excel sheet.
