The parents are offended that they make 150k a year, continue to waste money, and haven't repaid a penny in TEN years. Then they are told not to move to their city. I didn't get a sense that it was completely clear that they were to pay them back.....which is a problem. There should be clarity as to whether the money is a gift or a loan before the money changes hands. I remembered when I was saving up for my first house my Sister/Bro-in-Law offered to lend me money for a down payment I thanked them and politely declined their offer. I would have paid them back certainly, but I don't like borrowing money from family. It's not worth it.

      Not true at all.
      The caller said why...
The in laws are very clingy. They want to follow the couple across the country and move into the same town.
The inlaws have serious boundary issues.
I have a friend who's wife's family has boundary issues. Adding to the problem is the wife's mother is a hardcore bible thumper and very very image conscious. She is also a ripping gossip.
Anyway, during the construction of their new home, the in laws were there every day. After they moved in, during the decorating phase, mother in law basically decorated or at least tried to decorate the house the way SHE wanted it.
My buddy had a heart to heart with his new wife. A decision was made.
So the in laws made their daily run to the house and just like always, no knock or ring, just walk in.
My buddy and his wife sit them down an tell them , they need their privacy and space. That there would be no more "just walking in"...And, if they wanted to come over, they had to call first. No more of this 'just coming by'....Naturally the in laws got very offended and protested......In laws took a LONG break.
In the end it was healthy for the relationship. It all worked out.

The caller is a terrible person, if they had paid back $100 per month this loan would’ve been paid in full in less than the 10 years it’s been. It took a year to pay her off (I had serious health issues that year) but I just walked in with a check and surprised her one day when I came back from college on summer break. She never expected it back (which i didn't know) but she was very appreciative that I did that despite how difficult my year had been. Now compare that to my brother who has had a 3 year debt of 7k and refuses to make monthly payments to my great grandma.

A loan from friend of family that says "pay us back whenever" is something that you should be grateful about and try to pay back ASAP. For this caller, they have made/spent probably over 1MM during that period of time and do not realize how that could potentially upset the person who loaned you the money (with no interest, based on trust). And she's calling here thinking how dare they are asking for their money back now.

For some means paying it when you are completely out of debt and in addition have 50k+ in the account, for others means paying a sum every month, for other prioritising the debt to family before buying expensive cars, etc. That is why you make clear understandings, in writing, no matter who you are landing money!

This call really took a turn as it went on. At first I thought the in laws seemed super petty in trying to punish them to get their way. But as it went along and you factor that they’ve had ten years to pay it back and haven’t done so and that the way they offended them was telling them they didn’t want them to live in the same city as them was definitely a whiplash. I’d be offended too if you were happy to take my $10,000, wait ten years to not pay it back to me nor have any sense of urgency to pay it to me but then tell me I can’t live in the same city as you. Not next door to you the same city for god sake. Wowza

to me they all seem fishy. The in-laws didn't ask for the money until they were "not allowed" to move with them and they simply ignored the loan because no one asked to this point. The issue though is, legally they do not have to pay the loan because the in-laws have no papers related to the loan. On the other hand, in-laws can move wherever they please, they do not need anyone's permission. Personally, I see a divorce in the future. She called wanting an ally..she wanted to be told "well how dare his parents not love their child enough to just cancel the debt, that is what parents are for to help their children." Essentially the attitude of many adult children today.
I had a situation where my daughter expected my husband (her stepfather since she was 8...her father had died the year before)and I to move with her every time she was transferred in her 30yr military career as a pilot! She wanted a free babysitter...me. Yet she said I had not been a good enough mother to her.
Does that make any kind of sense rationally? Someone thinks they had a bad parent and now want to inflict that on their children and they get furious over and over when told no, we cannot move every three years to do that . Finally about the fourth move when she asked that I asked her, "Do any OTHER military parents, a couple not living with their adult child, move every three years so the grandmother can take care of the children..ANYONE you know?" She said nothing.

Things would have been much better had they chose to pay the family rather than choose ALL that other stuff over them.
It is offensive to repeatedly choose whatever was chosen when racking up the CC debt. I choose a vacation rather than pay you. I choose shoes I don’t need rather than you. I choose new (whatever) rather than you. There will be much less offense when the debt is paid.
