No doubt Yormark would love this. Not sure the rest of the conference has it as high of a priority. I still think football drives realignment. I would think someone like VT or NCST that has decent to good football as well as quality basketball would be more appealing to the conference.
@@saturdayswarriorbyu uconn market share in the NE is not very big. Big in CT, but that's it. 20 million people In NYC area, another 12 million in Boston area, but they watch pro teams. If Uconn was big in the NE, Big 10 would have taken them a few years ago.
UConn football sold out (40,000) when it played in the Big East. It has great basketball, baseball, soccer, and ice hockey programs. And US News has it ranked #58 academically.
UConn is a good school and definitely had its moments in the Big East in football. I don't think anyone else in the Big 12 has hockey, but that's irrelevant because they can find another conference to house it.
yep. We had very loud crowds when we were going 8-4 playing in the Power 6 Big East for several years. RGIII said we were the loudest stadium he ever played in. We got screwed when BC blocked us from the ACC, then our coach left after a Fiesta Bowl Appearance, we had horrible Athletic directors with 3 horrendous coaching hires. Things are changing, the NIL money is now some of the best for G5, and the necessary extra money will be raised for football if we are going to a power conference and have 5-7 years to prepare and the fans will come back
Interesting thought. I wonder if that could be part of the agreement or maybe they do it just to help UConn out. I could see BYU doing it since we know what it's like to be independent.
I think that it makes absolutely no sense for UConn to do this. Their problem has always been what to do with their football program. This doesn't solve UConn's problem. Worse still, it takes all of their other athletic teams out of the Big East, which UConn really does like, and moves them all to the Big XII, where UConn knows no one except Cincinnati, West Virginia, UCF, and Houston, and I have serious doubts whether UConn fans would consider any of those schools a rival. The travel costs will absolutely skyrocket for all of its teams. So they gets tons of extra expenses and no benefits. Of course, the media never tells you all of the details of the deal, so perhaps the Big XII is giving UConn billions of dollars to do this. If that's true, then obviously the cost-benefit analysis for UConn changes dramatically. But of course, if that's true, the deal won't be approved by the Big XII's presidents. I just don't understand why UConn's football team is banned from the Big XII. I could understand the football team joining and receiving a smaller TV revenue share until 2031, but from UConn's perspective the only team that they need to join the Big XII is their football team. No other sport is helped by joining the Big XII.
Well said. I completely agree with what you said from UConn's perspective. But my guessing is they fear they can't compete financially in the changing landscape of college athletics so they have to and/or they think it'll be easier to get football in once every other sport is in. Sounds like it's the compromise they have to make.

Why not cement yourself as the best basketball conference. You can use that as leverage against the big ten and sec. I’m curious to see if Sankey makes a public comment on it.
I feel like the Big 12 already has but UConn would certainly lock it up. I just don't see the rush, because even if we decouple football and basketball TV deals, that won't be until 2031. Would we rather HSBC UConn over any of the 4 most likely candidates from the ACC?

To me it’s a gamble. A big one. UConn is somewhat of an outlier in the big east is that they are the only flagship public school in the conference. For the big 12 I see it a way to take away options for how to add if something goes down in the acc. Again, Brett is gambling the face UConn football will be decent by when they are in the big for football. Yes I know UConn had the unlucky hirings of coaches. The football team has way more of a chance to be a middle team in the conference due to the fact that there really no top team.
It is a big gamble, but one I don't think we have to make yet. Wait and see what happens with the ACC. I feel like there are several schools there that could potentially bring more value than UConn.
Football has had its moments. The question is whether or not getting in the Big 12 will give them the resources and desire they need to get it back on track.
Do you want the Big 12 to add UConn?
It’s a win win for both. Diversify revenue stream with hoops is the future of power 4 success. UConn football will get better.

Yes
I like thinking about basketball matchups with UConn playing Kansas, Houston, Arizona, West Virginia, etc. in conference!
Incredible BB match ups!
Yes.
What do you like about it?
UConn vs Cinci , West Virginia were rivals in BB and FB. I believe they’ll also try to snatch Cuse, Pitt and Louisville along w other ACC teams.

The New York/New England market is huge.
True, but how much of it cares about UConn or college athletics? From what I understand, not much. But even a small percentage of that market is big.
