my bad bro! hahaha i usually always order a cheese and steak or cheese and mince but was clearly in the wrong this time hahaha! wont be ordering plain mince again!
The man bro, cool review. Have to try some pies from the bakeries in the North Island. Watties tomato sauce would be the NZ choice for sauce, maybe give that combo a go. Chur👍
Yeah dude we went to Hamilton and Rotorua but certainly need to go to more! I got the watties sauce for a sausage roll I had and it’s a bit more sweet than our normal tomato sauce in Aus. I enjoyed it 👌

I don't know anyone who puts ketchup on pies. Yuk, what a flavour ruiner. On fish and chips then yeah. I don't really like Watties though, too sweet. I prefer Whitlocks.
I heard that pies in nz have a requirement to be at least 45% meat, whereas Australia only has to be 25% and the rest can be gelatine. We have the best pies.
M8 I'm l8 to the party on this one. New Zealand pies are like a symphony you need to be like a mosquito squeeze, suck, bite not chomp. As you go in there are notes of flavour in the steam as you draw in a breath, followed by the crescendo as you break through the top crust, then boom bold flavours, followed by the warmth of the base wrapping around your lips. FYI New Zealand pies crush Australian pies. Thanks for visiting New Zealand and enjoying our pies, bummer about food poisoning yup full transparency it can happen in any country. The difference is you can go to any bakery in nz and find a 7/10 pie but sometimes you'll get 8s, 9s & 10s but in aus you gotta search forever just to find a 7/10 I've lived in aus 10 years and tried so many bakeries people hv suggested and I've had 3 pies that would be a nz 7/10
One of the best pies I ever had was a Chicken pie from Couplands, for about a month at their Ashburton store (this was in the 90s) as explained to me by the person on the counter "the baker didn't know how to put chicken in the pies". Chicken Gravy Pies fantastic.
We can argue for decades on which country makes the best pies , for me my local bakery at warwick shopping centre makes the best pies , for me anyway , love those curry pies tho
I agree with you. Pie tastings sans sauce. I only put sauce on pies that need improving and then sometimes some pies are so bad nothing will improve them.
Yeah bro, keep both countries happy by not picking a 'best pies' winner. But to be fair, pretty sure both countries pies are awesome if you go to the right places
Kiwi pies are the best by miles. If you're still down south, try a mutton pie if you can find one (just not Jimmys) Fat Bastard in Invercargill does great pies. But as others said, move on from the mince pie. mince is for kids, so many other good pies.
Been here 30 yrs Only one pie store makes the grade here in QLD.... The pies are thick and have alot of meat The pastry is flaky crusty and the way KIWIS like it..with no foil on bottom so the pie is cooked evenly all around Thier pies sell out everyday before lunch so you have to be fast......
He is in a bit of a Tourist trap $, but my 7 years in Brisbane and the rest in NZ I would say the pies are equal, very hit and miss dependent on where you go. Now Fish and Chips, my God NZ all day every day on that one :P
all those yum noises gave you away dude. your just a aussie you can give us some credit now and then my brother. And you went to the most shit pie places! do some research before you come over next time mate/champ
A few of These places I visited are high on the pie charts radar, Piereviews.co.nz the Rotorua pie I tried was rated 5 stars and won pie of the country 4 years in a row, everyone has their favourite places and everyone has their own opinions on what’s good, I gave 7 different places a go, 3 from north island and 4 from south. I just didn’t film them all and I’d say they were all solid pies except that one in Queenstown. FYI calling a Aussie a champ is like starting proper punch on, it’s a full insult now a days 😂
bro im a kiwi , dont come to nz and order a plain mince pie LOL , anything but a plain mince pie bro

This really makes sense too, Aussie pies are generally way more sloppy 😂
Good honest review, well done Aussie
Thanks Dave! 🤙🏻
yeah i never put sauce on pies i like to taste the pie!
Yeah same then you can tell how good the meat is,then wack some sauce on it if you want.

Kiwi's eat between 66-74 million pies a year, not bad for a country of five million people.
Plz review the 7/11 traveller pie

A good pie does not need sauce.
But some people just like that bit of something extra with it💁🏼♀️

100% agree 👌
I think the difference is kiwi pies always use puff pastry on the top so it's flakey and but aussie pies don't so you have a harder crust.
Yes this is one of the main differences I’ve noticed since being home, also the under crust and very soft in nz from what I had
Short pastry on the bottom ,flaky or puff on the top
The Fairlie Bakehouse is where it's at.
Yeah bro, keep both countries happy by not picking a 'best pies' winner. But to be fair, pretty sure both countries pies are awesome if you go to the right places
100% bro! Both are great
I’ll continue the pie reviews everywhere anyways and see how we go 👀
Gotta be honest with you: I could never find a decent pie in Australia.
I'm British and these seem quite similar to our pies. Didn't realise New Zealand had them (but I have never been so I wouldn't know 😅).
I assumed the uk had meat pies but I wasn’t 100% hey
I’m interested to try uks and see what the difference is 😅
Sadly pies have steeply declined in Australia, cost of beef maybe, you would have to go to a high end butcher but they like $16 per pie
lol 😂

Bro, the worse pie in NZ will soooo much better than the best Aussie pie!

There’s not that big of a difference haha

If a hotdog is your national food then Yes 😂
That is true. A good Aussie pie the filling is running down your hands. You have to have tomato sauce !

pie guy!
Why mince? Why not start with steak & cheese?
Because a mince/meat pie is the original?
@@TheG_Abroad Well the original hamburger was basic. But would you chose it over 1/4 punder, whoipper, big mac, etc?
The original mince pie should be good on its own which is why i tried them instead of the better options lol
Lots of you eating, very little about the pie itself. More picture of the pie and its inside please.
I got you 🤙🏻
Aussie, no surprises here, only a dinky-di would rate tomato sauce higher than a first class pie!
