the very best explanation and visual , drill support on what and how the right arm is suppose to work,, no doubt , my golf future is looking brighter.! I'm a 69 old timer stuck at DB golf for years . This drill will be a great boost to fewer lost balls and more lower scores.. CMM
This is exactly what I was looking for when you do this it unlocks a feeling through contact the is supernatural compressing the golf ball is absolutely magical. This drill is spot on, Thank you !!!
Thanks Eric - nice breakdown of the iron swing. I have struggled with this for a long time. One additional thing that helped me was to NOT target the back of the ball. I now look to hit the inside of the ball about 4 or 5 o’clock position. This target forces me to bring the elbow in to the central position just like you show in this video. I tried using your exercise along with the target change and now I can strike the ball more consistently - thanks - I just subscribed to your channel!
I can’t wait to get to the range and work on this. I’ve been bringing my right elbow to my hip, NOT getting it in front of my body. Great drill and explanation!
Thanks for this explanation 💗 I have been trying to keep my right elbow tight to the body at top of backswing 🤣 No wonder I can’t get good contact. I always learn something from your videos😊 It should be so simple but I make it too complicated!
I love the details of bringing the trail elbow to the midline of the body as detailed in the 3-step process: trail arm moves back, away from the midline, trail arm moves independently during the body turning forward bringing the trail arm back to the body midline, and trail arm straightens to compress golf ball, resulting in the forward slant of the club shaft and solid ball contact.
I've been playing golf for 20 years and after doing this drill I hit the ball more solidly than ever, gaining 15-20 yards in my irons. It transformed my swing. Cured my sequencing fault. This is truly golf 's secret. Thank you for sharing this!
Been struggling to find something that gets my hips turning correctly and my right arm working more through the ball. Will give this a try. Wish you lived in the UK! I've tried several lessons but thus far I've only managed to turn all elements correctly when hitting static positions on backswing - cannot repeat the prime loaded positions when I go for a non-stop swing
Thanks! Yes good one! Couple that with enough forearm rotation and all set ua-cam.com/video/Kcr0qREfUzg/v-deo.html&pp=ygUgRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHJpZ2h0IGFybSBkb3duc3dpbmc%3D
@@CogornoGolf I always get nervous when my forearm is facing up before impact worrying my club face is totally open although my hands are in front of the ball..might need to work on rotation
For sure! Need to add forearm rotation with this for sure....watch this one I go through that part more: ua-cam.com/video/Kcr0qREfUzg/v-deo.html&pp=ygUXRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHJpZ2h0IGFybSA%3D
I think this is great! I've been working on letting my trail shoulder work down in the downswing but I was having some balls go off to the right a bit. I'm seeing your right arm not only work out in front but also following your hips around to the left. Is this correct? Also, thank for mentioning the hand motion which provide some snap with the club and squaring the club face.
.. great video Eric 👏. I’ve been experimenting with neutralising the right index finger through impact and it really helps in getting the hands forward. The right index finger can kill your golf swing in my experience
Hey Tom, good stuff as always. I'm thinking back to a video you did with Tom Saguto where you guys focused on tucking the right elbow in at a dress and keeping it tucked and even more tucked throughout the back swing and downswing. Doesn't that kind of replace what you're showing today in terms of letting the bicep get unattached from your chest at the top of the downswing but then increasing that contact during the downswing? Could we sum this up by saying there's more than one way to skin a cat? Thank you!
You are correct! If there is a secret to golf, this is it. But, what we have to realize is there is a massive amount of forearm rotation, in a very short time, just before impact. Hack Motion proves this is what all great players do. There isn't much force involved. We're just slinging the club down the line, and it happens almost automatically. Hence, the term, "release"....
Agreed! People get nervous when you start talking forearm rotation.....as they think it will lead to "too much timing".......when in fact all that rotation is NEEDED just to get the face to square and the club head forward to the ball. I've been trying to yell that from the rooftops in our vids for past 8 years!!
@@CogornoGolf Lee Trevino called it the rubber band effect. When your trail arm starts out lower than your lead arm, it wants to bounce back, like a rubber band. That's kind of what I mean when I say it doesn't take much effort. Feel free to use this thought!
Another great video and thank you for sharing. I started doing this motion and hit it really well for me for a couple of weeks. Two misses started showing up: high right due to me having the club face open at impact and a fat shot here and there. Without seeing my swing, you think the high right comes from me not releasing and holding the angle too long? I’m a scratch player if that helps. Thanks
Hey Burt! Sounds right.....yes I would add in either lead wrist flexing to close face or more arm rotation to square. The more the elbow goes forward it opens the face.....so you need to close it along with that....ANYWHERE in the swing.
Here are some showing HOW to do that: ua-cam.com/video/fCW9W_lGQtM/v-deo.html&pp=ygUmRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vICMxIHNraWxsIHNxdWFyZSBjbHViIGZhY2U%3D ua-cam.com/video/zlRzjUvCRkU/v-deo.html&pp=ygUmRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vICMxIHNraWxsIHNxdWFyZSBjbHViIGZhY2U%3D
Setup Coggy....external rotation of the arm so that the inner elbow pocket points straight up to the sky, then internally rotate of the hand. It's the only way the right arm will fold properly and into the proper "plane".
The easiest way to explain this, is that you need to go through the motion like you're skipping a rock across a lake. For me, its my first swing thought in the downswing. Assuming your other angles and wrists are correct, that skipping the rock motion will get that right elbow moving properly.
For me it all came down to set-up. I used to have my trail bicep facing more like 10 o clock and would cast and get stuck no matter what but once I tucked it in so it pointed straight in front of me and trying to keep that it helped me get my elbow to function like this
Great video .... NOW ... after a major surgery i can't make that move with that elbow.... can u explain HOW i make this impact happen without it?! I'm a scratch golfer with my then "flawed" swing .... so how do i do it?
Hey Gunnar! Sure thing---just need to see your swing to tell you for sure how you match the pieces up! In general players who would have the trail arm more back on their side (like a Jim Furyk) have a ton of body rotation to get the club forward enough
30 years of trying to keep my hands in line with my strum at all times you tell me they do move independently. No wonder I have trouble thank you very much/
Saw a drill where you held the club only with your trail hand and from the top you should throw the club (imagine it ofc and holding onto it ) Works wonders for leading with my trail elbow.
Great teaching and explanation. My only fear is watching people block it to the right trying to jam their trail elbow so far forward. Even Adam Scott has it closer to his trail hip. In any case, it's a good swing feel to get compression and a forward low point. Another great video.
If the right hand is facing upwards at parallel as is the right arm there must be some serious hand release at the end of the downswing to square the club - is that right or am I missing something?

This “ drill “ is taking place from completely the wrong angle - horizontal- nothing causes golfers more problems than horizontal angles - watch - attention to detail needs to be from the first moment to the very last

Hey Gregory!
Yes! The external rotation of the trail shoulder induces trail forearm supination, leading to a shallowing motion of the shaft👍
