If beer reviewers did blind tastings, we'd all realise that 90% of them don't have a clue. This amazing ability to pick out UK brewed versions for example....you try it blinded and suddenly it goes from easy to really bloody hard.
@@RaveyDavey Anybody that genuinely knows anything about quality beer will have no problem knowing the macro beers from quality blindfolded, the mouthfeel carbonation, depth of flavor and lack of astringency will be obvious, I've tried hundreds of the very best beers in the world and you can't be bullshitted once the pallet has been exposed repeatedly to higher quality brewing and ingredients. In this case just looking at these beers head retention (I get different glasses and pours) sets alarm bells of a product that's been cheapened or shortcut in some way for profits, that's what usually happens with beers sold in large quantities in supermarkets 🍻

They did they same with Rheinbacher a couple of years ago. It went from 5.2 to 4.7, and they did the unthinkable and changed from a brown bottle to a green bottle. It was never the same again.
If they increased the price and kept the recipe, I'd accept, and pay for it. No, they change it to save money and subsequently sales drop. Good old UK!
The same thing happened with Lidl's wonderful 'Steam Brew' about a year ago. Thankfully it was just a sub par batch and it's now right back on form. I bought some Steinhauser a couple of weeks back and it was still absolutely beautiful.
Really interesting looking at the beer in the two glasses. Looks and acts totally different. That’s the biggest giveaway for me. I miss Aldi’s 1079 pilsner. 4 pack, silver cans with red font. Super cheap but only £2.49 a pack if my memory serves me right. Haven’t seen it in a couple of years now. No idea why as it always sold out! Great review as always Si 🍻

Switching of the brewery for Aldi beer happens here in germany every few years. They seem to have contracts that last some time and then they probably renegotiate and the one who offers it the cheapest wins. It's always between 3 breweries: Oettinger, Maternus (from Belgium) and Frankfurter Brauhaus. The stuff from the first two is always good to drinkable, the stuff from the last one is meh.
Tried my first Steinhäuser last night after watching your review. Sorry to say it didn't do much for me. I couldn't pick up the dry pilsner 'bite' that I like. Am extremely happy got introduced to Feldschlößchen. Better than the Champigneulles imho. Picked up Rheinbacher Pilsner and gonna give that a go. Top work, love the channel.
There's definitely something going on with Aldi and Lidl's beers. I picked up some Rhienbacher and Perlenbachers for the first time in ages the other day and they ended up going down the sink, the budget supermarkets seem to be using noticeably cheaper ingredients in their beers now
I’ve had 3 packs of the new one after it disappeared for the summer. Don’t think it’s a batch issue as it’s been over the last couple of months. Getting hard to find a decent value lager now.
This could be as simple as the malt they are using, this summer has been particular wet across much of Northern Europe, this will change the barley's sugar and starch content thus reflecting in the end product. Happens all the time in beer production just most people never notice as they never do comparison taste testing.
I often find that a beer is better if you let the bottle sit for 6 weeks or so. The flavour develops quite a bit. Drinking a fresh brew is often drinking a weaker tasting beer.
Last year they changed the water they use for Rhinebacher, in the cans. Not tried again since. Buying the bottles at the mo and they seem quality. The things you learn off this channel.
As you nearly sent yourself dizzy testing one then the other, over and over, and the final decision seems to largely based on the lacing I think it's probably a batch issue, and I also think it's still worth buying
Rheinbacher used to be produced by Dortmunder Actien Brauerei, then Brasserie St Omer, but lately had been produced by Radeberger, who brew loads of minor brands, Jever and Schofferhoffer radler.
I bought some yesterday on the strength of your old review and thought it was good but nothing special so hopefully it will return to its previous taste. Keep an eye on it a review it again in a few months
@@GreggFellows I'm same mate ,I live in Bavaria so many months of the year . My favourite beers augustiner and Tegensee are 1,05 Cents a bottle . But there's one called ottinger that's not classed as good ,it's cheap as chips but knocks the socks of owt we have in England!!

The first batch I had when they came back were awful! Almost like they were off. Things seem to be better again now, somethings just not quite the same though.
I just opened a bottle I bought yesteday and I have to admit I much prefer the Rheinbacher and Rheinbacher Weiss. The Steinhauer had a skunk from the bottle when it was opened and is too dry for my taste
Not only it seems the old Steinhauser has been downgraded, it's price has gone up. The old 6 pack version at my local Aldi before it disappeared was £.4.99.!
You could tell as soon as you started rocking those glasses they were two different beers as you say breweries don’t want you to have great beers at cheap prices.
I remember a beer you recommended from Loch Lomond brewery called zoom time. I loved it, couldn’t find it for a while and now I just feel it doesn’t taste the same. Maybe we aren’t allowed nice things

Their housebrand is Schultenbräu (used to be Karlskrone), but i know that they used to sell different housebrands in the 90's so maybe they used to sell it back then
I really don't think it has changed too much, and it could be just the batch, but I haven't had the chance to compare as you have. I moved on to bitberg and urquel since it went, which are just better, but much more expensive beers. When I went back to steinhauser, I just assumed it wasn't as good in comparison to Bitberg, staropramen and Urquel. However, after watching this, it seems I was wrong. Steinhauser always in fridge tho and it's still cheap enough to not think about it, and hopefully this will remain the case, although frankly I'm pretty upset.
Towards the end of the video your mind went into economics and supply vs demand.. it's true the more people demand something the more the price goes up and supply goes down.
It could be a decision based on rising cost of raw ingredients energy etc. Trade journos have for a while been predicting the rise in beer prices as brewers pass on the extra costs. If Aldi want to keep the price the same, the brewer would have to adapt the recipe.
They have done the same to many beers in Tesco too , Hobgoblin Gold for example they changed the label and recently and i thought why ? And turns out less carbonation to the beer now and it goes flat a lot faster so sadly i wont be wasting my £1.59p on a bottle of that any more and will just go to Aldi if i need a good beer now like Goose on the Loose or Aldi's own bran of IPA for £1 a can which are as good as any brewdog lager in my opinion , Anyway i was pleasantly surprised today the weather has been 24c where i live so yeah something positive.
Have you tried Beavertown? I used to love that and Brewdog Elvis Juice.. not my thing now that was my ale phase where I tried literally every single ale on the shelf cheap or expensive.. noticed after I did this they changed the label on Addnams ghost ship I think.. another ale ruined?

I emailed them and got the following reply: "As this product is part of our seasonal stock, it's likely to be back on the shelves for the winter season." Hopefully this is true, but not holding my breath.
Clearly this is just me seeing as how popular this seems to be, but I tried this once, and unless I had a particularly bad batch, I thought this was easily the worst lager i've ever tasted. Horrible metallic taste and undrinkably bitter. Cheap it might be, but it's cheap for a reason! Similar to those french stubbies you can pick up a case of for couple of euros in Calais

I in general always taste a slight difference in different batches. Especially in paulaner hefe . At the moment on the paulaner helles and this batch is slightly cloudy. Many brewers give the slightest adjustments. Most people don’t notice especially people who drink out of the can or bottle.
The price is a killer. I remember when it was £3 for the 6 pack when I first had it although that was about 7 or 8 years ago. It was reduced to £3.69 during Covid stricken 2020 - which was nice
I'm not sure but I'd like to put my head over the parapet here & mention that I've been drinking it for a few years before your endorsement 😉 I got some a couple of weeks back (you'd better believe I checked for the _brewed in Burton on Trent_ & _glucose syrup_ kiss of death) & it tasted OK but it's difficult to say whether it's changed without comparing them side by side. Sweet Christ it's gone up in price though -another victim of good old rip off Britain

The fact that Steinhauser disappeared for a while and then suddenly reappeared is a massive clue

if you're ever in a German Aldi Nord the Schultenbrau export in a red can is a really decent beer for 55cents for 500mml

The steinhauser beer is fantastic. Why would Aldi play round with it. I had my first budvar yesterday, what a ripper of a lager.
It wasn't available at my local Aldi for a month or so. Now it's back I don't think it's as crisp or as good flavour as it was but hard to be certain

The new one looks to be room temperature and the old one looks chilled (condensation on the glass). Could that have affected the head and the taste?

Don’t forget the nucleated pattern difference on each glass may affect the difference in carbonation!
