Ray is one of my all-time musical idols. He was a creative genius. In fact, all the members of The Doors were geniuses. That band was like the Beatles, four exceptional men who were fated to come together by a higher power, in my opinion. All these years later, their music still stands up as strong and as interesting and unique as ever. The world got robbed when Jim Morrison died. He was only getting started, and he had many more wonderful songs to come.

Fun Fact - Jim was so timid to begin with he would sing behind a darkened curtain while the band performed without him out on stage. It's only when he peeked his head through to the stage a few times receiving screams from girls in the audience he gathered up enough confidence to come out and perform with the band in person

I was on the second level so I could just look down at his hands as he was playing and he had the most amazing natural flow about how he expressed the music. Towards the end he fielded questions from the audience about the Doors and answered them. Absolutely unforgettable!
A mesmerizing song. The instrumental bridge is incredibly emotional. Jim's brooding voice combined with the almost sinister chord progressions created one of the most haunting songs ever.
He's good, he's got chops. I think he was comparing himself to the kinds of Bill Evans or Booker T, which are much better instrumentist than him. He did create a sound and mood that didn't exist before though, and he did it with many jazz and classical influences. He was one of the best IN HIS FIELD, which is rock'n'roll music with other ramifications. Of course you can't compare him to Keith Jarrett or Chick Corea, as pianists they're a different league altogether.

They feel great accomplishment when they acquired the skill to recreate the music Ray made. I am happy to see it live on through other musician’s fingers.

THE BEST OF THE BEST GREAT VIDEO! Thank HEAVEN for his precious teachings...What a discovery...RAY Alive and well! The Doors FOREVER and EVER! Thank you so much! Bravo!
Ray's left and right hand coordination was second to none. No rock keyboardist of that era could play left-hand bass so proficiently. He never depended on the "glitz" of the Hammond B3 and Leslie. Try playing the bass line and organ intro to "Light My Fire"; or the bass line and "rain-run" in "Riders on the Storm". Very difficult!
RIP, Ray. Miss you already, but thank you for a lifetime of great music, and beautiful sentiments and ideas. We owe you. Say hi to Uncle Jim - namaste.
RIP Ray - you were one of the very best. I saw you play "Light my Fire" in Seattle in 1967 and always remembered you keyboard playing ... such a sound..

More talent, kindness, energy, craftsmanship and sheer joy of playing in Ray than in 99% of all 2000's music combined! We should name streets, avenues, highways and new cities after him!
"We're ALL Riders On The Storm".....Awesome Ray!
"Open your heart to the energy"
"Don't be afraid" loved this guy immensely
great man . you were brilliant . the doors one of a kind best. one of the best bands ever
THE BEST OF THE BEST GREAT VIDEO! Thank HEAVEN for his precious teachings...What a discovery...RAY Alive and well! The Doors FOREVER and EVER! Thank you so much! Bravo!
i used to work in westwood village LA in 1990's and he came to eat a couple of times. one in a generation.
even the jacket he has on is unique.
The last thing Ray says is pretty much the most important thing you can learn from this video
That isn't a bad thing either, so many people don't even understand what he means by that.. to those who do, keep vibrating well!
RIP, Ray. Miss you already, but thank you for a lifetime of great music, and beautiful sentiments and ideas. We owe you. Say hi to Uncle Jim - namaste.
Ray was such a beautiful and enthusiastic guy. He is missed.
RIP Ray - you were one of the very best. I saw you play "Light my Fire" in Seattle in 1967 and always remembered you keyboard playing ... such a sound..
The best band to ever exist
IStudiopresents, thank you so much for posting this. Thank you so much Brother Ray for your amazing contribution to the arts. I’m so glad you left us with this chronicle of The Doors creative process. The most unique American band of all time.
It never ceases to amaze me on how FAT a sound Ray could make with just that little keyboard and electronic bass unit!! RIP.
electric not electronic

I correctly called it an "electronic bass," as opposed to a regular "electric bass," which would be like an Fender Bass instead of a normal standup bass, right??
@@tiffsaver No this piano bass is an electric piano bass, no electronic components in it. It is the bottom end of a fender rhodes electric piano. I own a 1971 fender rhodes piano bass
@@tiffsaver Also runs on no power, just needs an amplifier

I already know that a Rhodes piano is, my band's first keyboard played used one. I also know that the one that Roy Manzarak used was just the bottom end of an electric piano.
I also know that an ELECTRIC BASS GUITAR is called an "ELECTRIC BASS" (such as a Fender Jazz or Fender Pro) to distinguish it from a non-electrified BASS FIDDLE. I also know that you're a anal retentive jagoff eager to impress me with your esoteric knowledge, signifying NOTHING. So do we fully understand each other now??
I love how he shares his personal spiritual beliefs and philosophy about how creation works... musical creation... all creativity... and he always keeps it so positive and upbeat. Truly a pure good soul... I read and re-read and re-listen to everything I can find that he has shared. What a gift to us all. ❤️ RIP at the Road House on the side of Heaven...
You have to open your heart to the energy. Thanks you for that Ray, and for all the Joy and the Genius.
There's never been anyone quite like Ray Manzarek. As a musician and a person, truly inspiring and talented. He's somehow both mystical and down to earth. The Doors were easily one of the most united bands, each of them is as important as the other. RIP Ray.
You're the man Ray!
You changed my life Ray, RIP and much love from another random keyboardist from LA
It's been 4 years Ray we still remember you.
Never get tired of this video. Brilliant man!. Miss him dearly
Can't wait to get up there and hear the new tunes you been workin with jim!! R.I.P!!!
I like the disembodied Jim voice while he's playing
Ray Manzarek is awesome, he speaks the truth.
"We are Writers on this Storm." wow. Ray is eternal.
The sound of the late 60's!
I love the way he describes the whole song process at 6:02 it feels like we're there with them in studio.
Cool keyboards and he was a cool guy for sure. Very smart in so many ways. That was a very brilliant introduction. He under-estimates himself. There was medieval influences as well. There was a fusion thing going on!
The Doors music would not have been as good without rays keyboard skills.Rip Ray, a nice guy with no ego.
Thank you Ray. I can't even begin to express what your music means to me. Rest in peace, keyboard wizard.
