  • Welcome to the only two stage lift in the northeast!
    In 1994, the original Carlevaro and Savio Killington East Gondola was getting old and expensive to maintain. Poma replaced it with this supremely unique gondola system. It is actually two separate lifts that can be operated independently or linked together to act as one. The first stage travels from a base area on Route 4 to the bottom of the Needle's Eye area. It is 7848 feet long by 1187 vertical. The second stage picks up where the first stage leaves off and brings passengers the rest of the way to the top of Skye Peak. It is 5105 feet long by 1335 vertical. Under normal operational conditions the two staged are linked and you can ride all the way from Route 4 to the top of Skye Peak without even leaving your seat. In early/late season, sometimes only Stage 2 is open and when winds limit operations at the top of Skye Peak, Stage 1 will run alone.
    Both stages have a design capacity of 2400/hr but there are not enough cabins on the lift. I believe it's closer to 1600/hr. The design speed is 1200 feet per minute, but the speed during this recording is a still fast 1100 feet per minute. I believe it averages the highest normal operating speed in the Northeast. Kind of necessary when the combined length of both stages is well over 2 miles.
    I hope this lift gets a similar upgrade to what the K1 Gondola just had to improve reliability and passenger comfort. However I'd only want it to happen if the lift would continue to be as fast as it is now.

    I'm not a skier, but I love riding in the gondolas and hanging out on top.

    Skyeship stage 1, and the original gondola stage 1 lift lines actually cross each other. At 4:25 you can see the footings for the original stage 1. The original gondola terminal at Rte.4 is to the Left of the Skyeship base, where the original gondola mid-station at Northbrook is to the Right.

    Correction: this isn't the only 2-stage lift in the northeast. The main gondola at Le Massif du Charlevoix is also a 2 -stage lift

      Le Massif has an angle station, but the segment below and segment above it can't operate independently. There is only one haulrope and drive. That's different than a two stage lift. Skyeship is a true two stage lift. Both stages have separate drives, tensioning, and haulropes and can operate independently. Under normal operating conditions, cabins are interlined between the two stages and it acts as one lift.

    I hope that they refurbish these cabins and make them look new

      Although the Skyeship cabins are certainly showing their age, they are kept inside the barn 9 months of the year, and the lift has less than half the hours that the K1 Gondola has. The old K1 cabins were in much worse shape when they were replaced compared to the Skyeship cabins.

    In Europe this lift would have way less towers.

    • @collinparsons3363
      @collinparsons3363  3 роки тому +9

      It's an unconventional profile. They wanted it to be low to the ground and wind protected. That means lots of towers.

    And does this lift have 2 separate haul ropes or one big one

    • @collinparsons3363
      @collinparsons3363  2 роки тому +2

      Two separate haulropes. Top drive, bottom tension on each stage. They can operate independently or together, though they are always run together under normal operations.

      It's the lodge, which is actually the old gondola station that was repurposed.

      holy shit it's a Paul Wanders comment that's not solely about ramcharger. Also the Leitner Poma sigma diamond cabins can also have wifi, for example, Gondola One at vail has wifi as well as heated seats and a speed of 1200 feet per minute.
