It's wonderful how you are taking care of that old old building and bringing it back to life. Taking out the ugly former renos is not an easy feat. Great job on the sink removal and door being reopened.

Hi,Phil 🙂 Congratulations on the door project. It's great when a task is easier than expected.
In my opinion; while doing all of the demo work in one go is good in some ways; it's also making a small project into a huge project. It can become overwhelming in a hurry. I recommend just Reno one room at a time. Wall paper removal is a great job to do on rainy days( use a steamer for better paper removal).
In the interest of keeping the dust and dirt out of your bedroom; remove the bath tub ,but leave the dividing wall in place until that room is completed. The same for the other wall of your bedroom. Smaller projects are faster, easier and cheaper to do. Time might also be an issue. Try not to get caught up in the domino effect. In the process of stripping the room to the original base; don't get sidetracked by other "rabbit trails". You could make notes as you find/ think of new changes that you need/ want. Once the room is stripped;you will see what you have to do before moving forward into the decorating.

So pleased for you that things went better than you expected! My choice would be to open up the other side as well and remove the bathtub and restore that area to its original size. Keep up the good work! Thanks for another enjoyable video, Phil! Looking forward to the next one!

I agree with opening up the other side also but since Phil is staying in the other room I would suggest once he clears the bathtub etc that maybe he could temporarily put up some plywood to cover the hole on his bedroom side to keep the dust down.

      Love the video as usual.
Like you said taking out the bath is going to need a lot of planning.
In the meantime you could empty the dressing room and decide what you want in their.
As for the wardrobes you don't need any of them in your bedroom as you will have the dressing room to put all of your clothes in.
That would really open up the whole room.

I would go ahead and tear out the bathtub, that way all your demo work would be done and over with, and less trips to the tip. Once that is done, then you can build from there on out. Paint the pipes black, it's less noticeable for your charcoal bedroom. The doors, not sure but if keeping warm is an issue for you in the winter, it's best to keep the doors so your bedroom will be warm. Keep on going Phil after you get a break from the Rover work. You are doing so well!

For what it's worth, I'd remove the tub and it's surround within your bedroom. that way the wall is complete when you paint the room. You can seal the area off until you are ready to tackle the next room, but I would want to be able to complete the four walls of the bedroom in one go.

Idea - find curtains/window coverings that you like that could be used for all 3 rooms. If they have 3 colors in them, when painting, you could use the dark tone in the bed chamber, the mid tone in the dressing room, and the light tone in the bath...it would give a cohesive look without being too matchy-matchy. I loathe wallpaper, it always seems to pull away or the seams come loose (the newer glue ones anyway)...but do you need to use it to keep the plaster stable?

Great job Phil! I am so glad you found the original wood floors under the laminate. I was worried you would have a void there. If you want to feel really good about your work make a plan of action and cross them off as you get them done. Such a sense of accomplishment to mark off a task. We all need help getting motivated, especially when the tasks are overwhelming at times. Play music that makes you happy and energizes you. Believe it or not certain scents give you energy. Open the windows, let the fresh air and sunshine in, you’ve got this. Take out that tub!

Wow! Congratulations Phil! Opening up those doors and eliminating that weird sink arrangement was the absolute right thing to do! Now get rid of the weird bath and open it up to see what you'll be dealing with! The pink room will make a fabulous bathroom! I can picture a huge glass shower, a freestanding bathtub, gorgeous French commode sinks! The dressing room could be gutted out and fitted out with special closet spaces. The dark study would look great as a library and bar. I think a deep chocolate brown color would work well in the bedroom with the pinkish marble fireplace mantle. You're doing a great job!

I have just finished a Reno and have some suggestions for you.i would suggest that if you can, you declutter. Then decide which furniture needs to go. After that move everything out of the rooms that are being redone. Move yourself to another bedroom. I suggest this because you don’t know how long the area will be a construction site or war zone. It will make you feel better if your sleeping area is dust free! The other reason for moving furniture out is that you would only have to do it once and not stop to get things out of the way when you are building or plastering and painting. Anyway just my thoughts

    • @Mej_Javiky

I agree that clearing out a bit before doing more demo, is a wise choice. Especially since you are not 100% about whether you want to do it. Those armoires in the dressing room are going to need to find new homes regardless. Doing another task that needs doing anyway gives you time to think about the next step.

That bath tub room was a definite bodge it and scarper job
Why on earth would any one think that this was an acceptable solution to an en-suite bathroom plus it obviously was a silly idea no loo no extractor facilities etc just asking for a damp/mould environment
Essentially it was just paying lip service to an en-suite facility
Definitely not a five star rating facility !!!

I can't believe how many flowers you have blooming! I'd be bringing in some of the hyacinths indoors for that gorgeous fragrance to wake up to. 😉It looks beautiful there right now.
If you were living in that room, I'd paint/swatch a few walls just to see what happens with the light. Once you paint and finish the room (if you're like me), the desire to rip out that bath will get less and less - especially since you can shut the door on it. Plus, once you've finished the bedroom décor, tearing out that bath will make such a mess that just the clear-up will be discouraging. Just my thoughts.
The people renovating "Our French Chateau" finally cleaned up and painted their master bedroom, having left it until after other projects. They say they wished they'd done it first due to the mental lift it gives waking up to something nice! Check out what they did with the room - you may like it for ideas. Totally different aesthetic in the rooms decorated at "How to Renovate a Chateau Without Killing Your Partner." Anna has done some deep colours in some of the guest rooms. The navy print wallpaper in the back hall can give you an idea of dark colours and scale in a chateau. You could do the walls in a more neutral colour and paint the ceiling darker, which would be dramatic, make the room seem more cozy, and yet not have the "bright" feel you don't want. 🤷‍♀
Hey - we're just punters watching on our small screens drinking tea. You're the guy living, breathing, and working on all this. ❤

Back in the days when central heating was being introduced and old buildings being retrofitted with central heating systems 4:30 it was considered a status symbol to expose the pipes and "show off" what the owners had in their homes. Similarly with the introduction and retrofitting of electrical lights, gas light fixtures converted to electric bulbs, showing off the electric bulbs as a status symbol.

Love the walk thru. I'd bet that that pipe to your radiator did go through that wall at one point in time. The base moulding is covering over the hole. Additionally if you're worried about the pipe freezing, they sell foam covers that go over the pipe to insulate it.
Also those doors are beautiful- are you considering trying to strip it back to wood? That could be beautiful

WOW what a transformation. I know that the young me would continue with dismantling. The not young me believes finishing up where the wash basin and water closet tops the list. For the time being filling nail holes, repaint doors and use the gold to high-lite them as the other doors are done. Lipstick on a pig! Mow the yard, work on Range Rover, just putter, grab a beverage of choice and pull up a box to sit on (with the tub area to my back) and just look at all the work I have done to that in that room already.

I agree with those that are saying tear the bath out and open up that side now... get rid of everything you know for sure needs to go, bath, wall paper, whatever furniture isn't staying, then systematically repair and decorate. (I absolutely love the little fireplace in the dressing room, what I can see of it.) Color schemes are going to be fun when you get to it... for some reason I am seeing a dark navy blue with gold accents in the bedrooom, maybe a bit of cream to lighten things up ... or find a large carpet that you love, and work the color scheme off of it... leave the floors as original as possible where there is no carpet. I am loving that you are breathing new life into this place!

    That went smoothly!!!
You have to move bedrooms either way, if you go through with it now or later. If you do one room at a time, you have double the rubble from the bathroom in one finished room and in one unfinished room, so you might do the de-construction now, clean up ONCE and then doing the rooms one at a time. I loved the idea of some darker more masculine colours in all three rooms ... perhaps not completely dark as in almost black as the preview pics last time but lots of very satiated dark blues and greys as well as greens. But you will chose colours you like, don't let anyone tell you what to do, get inspired but chose what you like and what you can live with.

I think the wall paper is very busy in the dressing room and probably makes it feel smaller than it actually is, especially since you have just come from the much larger bedroom.
So glad that it was only a bit of glue on the chipboard.

While you are working on this area… You may as well get the tub removed… when you go to redecorate, you will just get it all done at once…
You will think of more options of what you feel it needs.

Great work Phil well done. I think there is an argument for making your area finished so you have a beautiful bedroom to escape to when chaos reigns supreme everywhere else. In hindsight I wish I had done that anyway.🤞🤞❤❤

I would make the mess now before you decorate. Get it opened up. Then you can decorate the bedroom and dressing room. The bathroom en-suite renovations won’t interfere with the two finished rooms. Happy you’re working on your beautiful chateau. xx

I would think getting all of the demolition done and out of the way would help. Then you can focus on rebuilding the rooms into what you want all at the same time. Not in stages. Your move to a different room is only temporary. It's looking amazing for being covered up for so many years!

Crack on with restoring the room to its original format. Tub must go! You are on a roll, keep going until it is all done and dusted. Your sense of accomplishment will spur you on and you can enjoy the space. 🙏❤️

The new opened-up space begs to be an adjoining large dressing room/closet/primping space! A woman's space to privately pivot before a floor-to-ceiling mirror, sit at a fancy dressing table, sit at a delicate bench or armchair to put on his or her shoes while glancing at the lovely scenery outdoors or in front of the fireplace! Plenty of wall space for hanging spots and cabinets for wardrobes. Chandelier. Maybe even a sink...

    Take out the tub
Put plastic sheets over the opening to your current bedroom. Consider putting pipes under the floor boards .
    Have a lovely weekend.

Think about removing the tub for a week then decide. It would be better without the tub - IMO. Have a great weekend.

The small room with the awful wallpaper is ideal for a bathroom. Even better if you could put in a pocket door between the rooms and take away the big, broken doors. That small tub is grotesque and should be torn out so the wardrobe that belongs there can be restored.
If you can I would suggest you have your garden statues pressure washed. There are several you tube sites that do free pressure washing if you let them film it.

Hey Phil, I have to say this. OMG it's a chateau you will see the pipework. People this Chateau was built way before indoor heating, the walls are so freaking thick, it is that way for a reason, and it's the charm of the chateau. Sorry. Anyway, looking forward to what you decide and how nice it's going to be. Love from N.Y.

My thoughts are you should open it all up so that gives you a complete picture of space and flow. Then you can decide on variations of colour through the entire suite. It really is going to be a suite worthy of being in a Chateau.

The floor is damaged between the rooms. I would replace the wood if possible. Otherwise sand and stain. We made a paste from the sanded wood with a glue and applied it to wide gaps in our flooring in one room we have. Take down both doors. Don't try to repair them. If you want to block the dressing room than hang heavy attractive drapes in the doorway. Take out that tub. Turn it into a closet if it is inside the wall. Or, maybe turn it into a built-in shelf.

Phil, when I suggested shades of green I didn't realize you had a pink marble fireplace. Now I would suggest a medium gray paneling then pick a wallpaper that had the main colors you like. I think gray, beigh, a shade of pink and then maybe a dark gray back ground. Take a sample of paint colors with you to a wallpaper shop to help you decide what you like. Kathy USA 🇺🇸

What a difference in opening up the doors. I vote room by room in completing the rooms but that’s me. If it takes you a bit to finalize the deco color and plans then rough out all the rooms. Phil I’m impressed by you going at it

You could go to a decorating store and collect paint sample cards see what wallpaper is available and maybe get more ideas. You can collect pinterest ideas of rooms you like.
.put it all together and decide what you want. Then collect items from brocantes etc. You could do that in the evening while you are resting. We all have different wants and needs

Go for it!! Do all the demo first and you will have a much better feel for the bigger plan and next steps.
After demo, as a part of the tidy up - remove the excess/extra furniture and items you know you already won’t want in your finished space - to clear the area and your head even more on how to best move forward.

So glad that was easier than expected. I would open up the other side it’s meant to flow that way I think . Rather then move to another room could you get one of those plastic construction zipper doors? You would be able to come and go and protect your current bedroom from dust. I think from what I’ve seen so far I would use the same color paint on these rooms it would be quite elegant . Enjoy the sunshine and the birds!

So wait… did someone really think that an ‘en-suite’ could be in several closets throughout the room?? How bizarre. People shouldn’t be allowed to renovate if they’re idiots. Thanks for fixing this mess. Looking forward to seeing this beautiful building regain its dignity.
